Fedora Installation :: Reinstall Grub After A Windows Installation Deleted It?

Jul 23, 2011

This is partly a note to myself for the future and a guide to anyone who experiences similar issues.

So, I had to reinstall Windows XP since my previous installation gave me a blue screen error due to reasons unfathomable. Naturally, this deleted the GNU Grub and I could not login to my Fedora.

I read that apparently booting from a DVD installation offers an option to enter the rescue mode. I did not have a DVD, I only had the LiveCD so I had to figure out a way to reinstall Grub from the LiveCD. The following method seemed to do the trick.

Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.

1. Find the partition where the Grub Stage1 is code...

Fedora Installation :: Shouldn't The Updater Have Deleted F10?

Dec 10, 2009

I have Fedora 10 and I'd been holding out on updating to 11 and now 12 is out. It popped up asking me to update so I decided to finally update. When I come back to it, it said /boot was running low on memory and that I should delete an old kernel to free up space. Well shouldn't the updater have deleted fedora 10? Sorry I'm new to all this linux stuff. What should I do now?

Ubuntu :: Deleted Files On USB Drive Not Actually Deleted?

Jun 7, 2010

I searched the forum with various terms and didn't find anything, so my apologies if this is a common and/or newbie problem. It seems that when I have a USB driveplugged in to switch the files around, those that I delete are still taking up space. I first noticed it with a Chinese MP3 player and thought it was the player being crappy. I could still play all the songs that were supposedly gone. Today, I noticed it with a little thumb drive that I've had for years. I plugged it into my husband's computer running winXP, and the files showed up in a weird, unusable form. I was able to delete them for real.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 - Deleted 9.10 Instead Of Uninstalling?

May 2, 2010

I recently installed 9.10, and when I was looking for information on it I realized that 10.04 had come out. I then went to delete 9.10, instead of uninstalling it. Now my computer thinks that 9.10 is still on it. Some details. I put 9.10 on it's own hard drive (if it makes a difference, it is an actual physical hard drive, not a partition). I was having trouble with my usb booting, so I used the install inside of Windows option.

I then proceeded to reformat that hard drive in preparation to install 10.04. I am guessing there are registry keys that need to get deleted, or something similar. I went to the add/remove programs in the control panel, but that didn't help. Also, when I turn my computer on, Ubuntu is still a dual boot option, it just doesn't do much. When I try to boot to Ubuntu it says something about sh-grub, or ch-grub.

Ubuntu Installation :: Deleted, And Now Can't Reinstall Lucid?

Jul 13, 2010

I deleted Ubuntu off of my laptop, because I was having some issues with it (I had lost some of my icons in Software Center, couldn't access my Yahoo Mail etc..). I deleted it using this method. I then went into my Windows Vista OS, and accessed Disk management via Control Panel. The partition Linux was previously on was Unallocated, and I had a D partition which was Windows recovery. I then shrunk my C (main Windows) partition down. I deleted the D partition. So now I have the C partition, and a large unallocated partition. I was planning on installing Ubuntu from CD onto this unallocated partition. I am using the same CD I had previously used to install Ubuntu. My roommate was also using the same CD today to install Ubuntu on his computer. I know the CD works.

So when I inserted the Ubuntu CD it loaded the first couple of screens. It got to the purple screen where the install text would normally have appeared and then continues to load.... but the "do you want to install? etc..." text did not come up. It then loaded to a black screen, loaded back to the purple screen, reads the disc, keeps loading... and loading... and nothing ever comes of it.I tried again, this time when the first purple screen comes up, I hit enter. I get the language select. I then get the options. I click install Ubuntu. it then starts loading... and loading... black screen, purple screen, black screen with text... but nothing comes of it.My windows is working fine. I don't know why it won't install

Fedora :: Accidently Deleted F12

Jan 22, 2010

So I installed F12 x86_64 version the other day. Everything was going okay. So today I signed on to my windows 7 instead. While I was on it. I was looking at the extra space I had allocated for F12. Well I thought I was going to delete that but I actually deleted the F12 partition. This means that I don't have a MBR anymore. Is there anyway I can get my original MBR back onto my windows 7? I'm going to buy a separate hard drive to install windows 7 later. I just would like to know if I really screwed up by deleting F12. If this helps, it did switch my bootloader from the main MBR in 7, to grub. I tried EasyBCD to reinstall it but it keeps say it failed.

Ubuntu Installation :: Testdisk Can't Restore The Partition - Just Deleted

Aug 8, 2010

I tried to install Ubuntu next to XP. After restart - no XP and no Ubuntu. Something wrong with loader I guess, I see command line prompt (of the loader I guess).

So I restarted from liveCD. But no "Repair Install" option like in XP CD. So, I deleted partition to install again on top of old, then learned a loader possibly could be fixed.

So, the problem is: testdisk cannot restore partition I deleted. I didn't write on disk anything. May be swap space after couple reloads from liveCD corrupted it?

It complains "The harddisk (...) seems to small!", it sees some other partitions and doesn't see what Gparted and Disk Utility.

Let me know the best approach to get back XP running (having Ubuntu would be good too).

Here below are the screen captures for details.

Quich Search results. Can't recover what's found. Why 4 partitions are found? Notice, "The harddisk seems too small !" Could this be a problem? HDD is not Maxtor anymore

The gap is there but no deleted partition shown

Essentially same thing... going for deeper search

Deep Search hasn't recover anything new. And shows same results as Quick Search (2nd testdisc image )Hit "continue"...

Now the partitions shown as deleted because of overlapping. The partition to be recovered is still not in the list.

Anyway, my final goal is to get WinXP back and if possible, install Ubuntu. It's nice that installer still sees the XP. Too bad the loader doesn't. how to get it done.

Unlike during installation of XP, ubuntu doesn't offer to utilize the deleted partition. Is it going to stay empty/unallocated? Forget the empty space, will I get XP running if I continue and install?

Fedora :: Deleted Partitions From The Terminal?

Aug 9, 2009

I'm trying to install windows xp on a hard drive that has fedora installed. When I booted the windows xp cd, it would get stuck on a blank black screen after displaying the words ""Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration."I searched for that problem and the solution to it seemed to be to clear the mbr. I tried doing that in fedora from the terminal using: dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda1 bs=446 count=1That didn't work. I kept getting this message:0+0 records in0+0 records out0 bytes (0 B) copied, 2.2978e-05 s, 0.0 kB/sAt this point, I backed up all my data in fedora thinking that I would delete the fedorainstallation and start anew with xp and then reinstall fedora.

I had an old slackware cd around that I thought I could use to run fdisk from and delete the partitions for fedoraen I did that I found that it wouldn't recognize anypartitions. I kept trying to print out the partition table and it would display nothing. But I can view the partition table when I run fdisk from the terminal in fedoraUnfortunately I lost the cds I used to install fedora long ago and I don't have any blank cds that I could write isos to. So, my question is would there be any disastrous consequences if I deleted the fedora partitions from the terminal while running fedora?

After network restart, it is also deleted automatically. In both case domain name did not work (i.e, I can't connect to my server from outside using domain name, I can by ip address, internet is working fine). However, I found that the domain name is written in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 with search=mydominaname.

Fedora :: Deleted Menu.lst - How To Restore

Apr 1, 2011

I have a Laptop where I installed both Fedora 11 and windows 7 dual boot.

While I was upgrading Fedora 11 to Fedora 14 using preupgrade, I tried to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst file to make an option to continue upgrading the system after rebooting.

Accidentally, I deleted the file content and I couldn't restore it

I knew then that I'll face a problem when I reboot the system, and I faced it >> the grub selection menu disappeared , and only the line (grub> ) appeared when I reboot the system.

1- These commands:

Code:

But when I rebooted , nothing changed and the same (grub> ) appeared again.

2- I used the instructions in the PDF attached, but unfortunately nothing changed.

I think that I have to rewrite the menu.lst and grub.cnf files but I'm not expert and I don't know exactly what was there (locations , commands , etc. )

The current system monitor for the file system is shown in the next image:
