i recently deleted a NTFS partition while ubuntu was running and didnt disable the automount and when i tried to restart from what i can see it is trying to mount the partition which does not exist. When booting it says something to the effect of mounting dev/sda5 (which is now ubuntu) NTFS signature incorrect, what file must i change to allow ubuntu to boot because i kind of dont want to reinstall ubuntu and reconfigure it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I'm a total non-geek, and am totally stuck. A long time ago, I installed ubuntu to dual-boot with windows 7, and everything was peachy. I recently decided to get rid of the ubuntu partition since I've got another laptop that I'm using exclusively for ubuntu (probably a bad decision, but I'm sticking with it.) I backed up the files I care about, and then I deleted all partitions (from windows) except the C:, leaving me with the C: and unallocated space.
Of course, when I go to boot up my computer, it gets stuck on the "loading...please wait" screen that it used to show before showing me my various boot options (several ubuntu ones, and then the windows loader at the bottom). It may say something else before loading, I can't tell since my screen is intact. I suspect my windows 7 installation is still there, but I can't boot into it. I have an HP Pavilion DV2911. I have a live disk, but my optical drive no longer works. I *can* boot from USB (and load stuff onto a flash dive) but I don't know what to do. I have no recovery disk or partition, since I installed windows 7 myself, probably badly. Where do I go from here? Is it a simple boot.exe or MSR error that I can fix? Did I do something worse than that?

View 3 Replies View Related10 yr old Dell laptop with NO WORKING DRIVES. i was dual booting xp and xubuntu when i decided it was time to cut the cord. so i installed gparted and deleted my windows partition. now it won't boot. my assumption is that i never installed grub. i got a usb to ide cable so i can access the hard drive from my desktop (xp home edition). i read that grub should be in a folder called "boot". i see on my hard drive that i have: "disks", "winboot" "install", "uninstall-wubi.exe", and "xubuntu.ico". if i expand the "disks" folder, there is a "boot" folder containing another folder called "grub", but the folder is empty. is this where i install it? am i an idiot and missing something stupid? where do i download grub if i need it?

I deleted the "/dev/sda8" through Windows Disk Management, and when i restarted the system. GRUB boot menu vanished and a GRUB console appeared. Then I booted my system using Fedora12 live USB and created a new partition at same place from where i deleted it, and then after restart my started working normally as it was before partition deletion.
But, I don't understand what actually happened. Can anyone tell me in detail what happened and why and what to do to avoid such things in future?
I deleted both the partition with archlinux and the swap in order expand the windows xp partition. I am now unable to boot, just as gparted warned me. When I turn my computer on, it just goes to a black screen with a flashing underscore.
I cannot type anything, but cntrl-alt-dlt does restart. I have been attempting to restore grub and/or windows's boot method for the last 24hrs. The main things I've tried were the instructions here and using super grub disk. However, I have not been successful. I am running an Ubuntu live disk. At the moment, I just want to be able to run windows, but do not have an xp disk because this laptop was issued from my old college.
I let a 'friend' use my laptop over the weekend. Now when I turn it on, it loads the BIOS details, then says no active partition, then no OS cannot be found.
It looks like they have deleted the partition with SuSE with the Grub Loader.
I cannot load up SuSE or Windows 7!
Any ideas on how to recover the boot to load Windows 7?
I have tried using the Windows 7 install disc to repair - but it does not recognise that Windows is installed and wants to do a clean install only.
Is it worth trying to reinstall SuSE and hope it detects Windows on the other partition? (I assume it is still there!)

3)we will take grub source code from net ,then we will compile it in same path(i think in fedora grub.8.gz),

As the title states, I deleted my /boot folder on one of my F14 installations. I'll have to fix it later. I have F14 under VirtualBox on the same computer. I'd bet I can copy from there and be OK.

Recently I reinstall Grub, but I have chosen on ntfs (windows 7 partition E: drive). After this I chosen /dev/sda which is correct boot partition.
Now Fedora 10 and Win 7 booth are working properly.
How can I get back my E: drive safely?
In Fedora 10 E: is not available, where as in Win7 it is available but asking for Format.

I used the sudo parted /dev/sda -- and then rescue START END command and could get back the /data partition. But it gives me the following error while mounting the partition. mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda7, missing codepage or helper program or other error. In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so.
What does this mean. How to I fix this? Also when I try to recover my windows partition using parted it scans for a while and then does nothing. It doesnot ask for writing the lost partition in the partition table. What do I do?
my /dev/sdb was a truecrypt partition that was mounted when I accidentally deleted the partition in gparted (instead of sdc, stupid). I'm pretty sure I haven't overwritten anything since then, but I'm not sure how to go about recovering this one. To confound the problem, the only way I can install stuff to my ubunut machine is by downloading on a windows machine and transferring by memory stick.

I am running a dual boot with Vista and Ubuntu. When I rebooted It will only go to the Grub> prompt. Ive ran TestDisk and though that I had corrected the problem but it didnt. After running TestDisk again here is what It came up with.

I just made a very stupid mistake, and in result I just deleted almost everything on my windows 7 partition. I followed this guide: [URL].. for how to access my windows partition from ubuntu and it worked, but then I decided to rm -r the whole thing thinking it was a copy. I have no restore disks or any other type of backup. I know this maybe be impossible, but is there any way to recover my data?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMost times I use my brain but some how I really screwed up with deleting the wrong hdd's partition which was an 500GB NTFS with all of my custom programs, art, web design & so on which can not be replaced. Is there a way to reverse this process? Keep in mind I am not Linux friendly being I do not know the commands & so on so any copy paste commands with good detail on what it does would be greatly appreciated!
I used GParted to delete & already hit the accept but no other changes have been made on the HDD after that. I am currently running in Live mode as I was going to install on the 80GB which is the one I meant to delete but instead had a nice moment of insanity & deleted the 500 instead!
sda6 is 10.04 sda 7 was dreamlinux. Deleted DL and on reboot received error 15. Tried super grub but all Linux options fail. Can only get to win 7 I do not have to re-install. I have data galore on 10.04 and not backed up.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was installing windows vista on my computer, so I backed up everything to a external drive which was formatted with ext2. I then proceeded to install windows vista. When I got to the partition section I tried installing windows vista to my raid 0. When it didn't work I decided that I would delete all my existing partitions and create a new one. Well in my haste I accidentally deleted my ext2 partition from my backup drive that was still connected. As soon as I realized what I had done I shutdown the windows install and disconnected my external drive. This is the current state of my drive from parted:

I know that the drive only had one partition before and that it took up the entire disk and it was ext2 (maybe ext3).
I had to delete my swap partition in order to reinstall win XP, but now I need to reinstall it. I run Ubuntu 10.04 and read that there is a command $ sudo mkswap /dev/sda1. I have about 19 GB of free unpartitioned space left on the hardrive that I want to make into a swap partition. I'm not sure whether I should use sda1 or if the book uses it as an example and if I use it it could wipe away my existing partition with ubuntu installed on it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried to install Ubuntu next to XP. After restart - no XP and no Ubuntu. Something wrong with loader I guess, I see command line prompt (of the loader I guess).
So I restarted from liveCD. But no "Repair Install" option like in XP CD. So, I deleted partition to install again on top of old, then learned a loader possibly could be fixed.
So, the problem is: testdisk cannot restore partition I deleted. I didn't write on disk anything. May be swap space after couple reloads from liveCD corrupted it?
It complains "The harddisk (...) seems to small!", it sees some other partitions and doesn't see what Gparted and Disk Utility.
Let me know the best approach to get back XP running (having Ubuntu would be good too).

Anyway, my final goal is to get WinXP back and if possible, install Ubuntu. It's nice that installer still sees the XP. Too bad the loader doesn't. how to get it done.
Unlike during installation of XP, ubuntu doesn't offer to utilize the deleted partition. Is it going to stay empty/unallocated? Forget the empty space, will I get XP running if I continue and install?
I was messing around with the windows 7 install and wiped a valuable partition on a drive, I ripped the sata cable out afterwards... is there a way to reconstruct the table?
