I am running FC14 as my host OS and am trying to install a virtual environment for academic reasons. I have tried using several different varieties including VMware and VirtualBox, but none of them seem to have any modules for the FC14 kernel. Has anyone had any luck with virtualization with FC14 as the host, that may be able to point me in a viable direction?

I have windows vista 32bit oem that originally came with DELL system when I bought new. On the PC, MS$ sticker has the product key for windows vista.When I reformatted the disk and re-install windows vista natively on the machine for which it was licensed, it got automatically activated and passed MS$ genuine check. But I got into problems when using windows vista as guest os from fedora 13 host os using virtualbox on exactly same machine for which vista is licensed for. I go that MS$ : x -days to automatic activation, activate now link. Clicking on activate now it says invalid product key even I entered correct product key as it is on the PC.
I tried to create new windwos vista guest os 2 ways:
1) using existing native installation of windows vista by using vmware converter to create vmware disk image of the running windows vista and shutting down and log back into fedora 13 used this disk image as the storage in virtualbox and create windows vista guest. It starts up ok except for that activation issue.
2) using the windows vista dvd and using that as the source for new windows vista installation in virtualbox. All fine except got that activation issue.After killing my 2 days just for this I dont know whats next. Does that not make sense that I have a license for using windows vista on this specific pc, I am entitled to install it on that same pc as virtual or native or even both ways ?

My native installation was updated to service pack 2 and I also updated the fresh dvd install of windows vista in virtualbox to service pack 1 and then service pack 2 but still no effect in regard to license activation.Did any one solved the problem in some way regarding this issue for windows vista, I would like to know.
i'm a web designer and I use adobe creative suite products for my work. I would like to know if Fidora is capable of running these applications with no problem at all as I am planning on installing a new operating system which is light and very secure. - Legacy issues mean I can't migrate to Linux in one step.
- The flexibility offered by virtualization is appealing.
Are there any resources out there that explain how to set up and manage fedora as a hypervisor and guests within that environment? I expect that I'll need to install a number of packages and to rebuild the kernel but I'm not aware of enough details to get started.

Has anyone had any success with accessing stored files on any Olympus Cameras or Digital Recorders, which seem to be accessible only through "Microsoft Widows"? I thought I might have been able to access stored files by installing and running the Olympus access program in Wine but there is no communication through the USB connection. This issue is multiple devices so I know it's not an issue with the devices. used to, i plug my iDevice in and Ubuntu automatically mounts it. Now, nothing at all happens. So, here's what I have done so far. Ubuntu can see them, but nothing happens and I don't know what to do with that.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled libimobiledevices and even tried iFuse. It used to work, and I did nothing that owuld have changed it's behavior. My only thought is something that was included in an update at some point caused this, but Ihave no way to track that down.

I have a tool in the VM that I need to run using some input data located on the host machine. How can I share files between the host and the VM? I need to be able to read/write files from within the VM.
Someone mentioned "Samba" to me and it looks like it's installed on the VM, or at least I see files and folders on the VM containing "samba" in their names. So how do I use it for sharing? Are there other approaches?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Windows guests see my VMware Host Only folders as \.hostShared Folders But when I try to see them from a Linux guest, all I get is frustrated. No permutation of that seems to work. Because the Windows guests see the shared folders I know the host is doing its part in providing them. After two days of not finding an answer on the VMware Workstation forum I finally figured out that the problem really is how to look for them with Linux. With Linux I can turn off all NICs accept the Host Only NIC, put smb://172.16.138.1 into the address bar and see all the shares on the host, but not the folder designated as the host only folder.

The university network the box hangs off uses statically-allocated ip addresses, allocated to fixed MAC addresses (i.e. it eats any traffic with mismatched ip and MAC addresses).

Hardware: dual NIC, Intel server
Bridged networking, with separate NICs for host and guest
I'm aiming for high-security separation between host and guest traffic. To do this, I would like to to run all host traffic through one NIC, H, and all guest traffic through the other, G. The host and guest have separate, statically allocated, IP addresses, IPH and IPG. The network forces these to be mapped to specific MAC addresses, MACH (the address of NIC H) and MACG (the address of NIC G). So it's not too hard to write host firewall rules to enforce this policy. The rules just have to state that traffic coming into H must have a destination compatible with IPH, and traffic going out must have IPH as source - and vv for G and IPG. There also don't seem to be any trouble telling the guest to only use NIC G. As a result, turning off NIC G (or equivalently, firewalling it off from host traffic) crashes the network, I have to reboot it to get networking working.
But I can't figure how to tell the host to _only_ use NIC H for anything else except the guest. Even though we don't see any IPH traffic coming into NIC G from outside, I don't seem to be able to stop the host from starting connections on NIC G. Does anyone know any way to do this - to tell the host that it can only use IPH as its IP address unless traffic is coming from a guest process, and that it can only use address MACH and NIC H? I've been reading route and arp manuals all day, but I can't seem to figure anything on this - mainly because arp and route don't know about host/guest processes, and I guess weren't designed with this in mind...

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two machines on my local netowrk, one running Fedora 9 and the other Fedora 11,(64 bit version).I made one, machine A, into an NSF server and arranged to export a directory to the other machine B.I made sure the firewalls were allowing nsf traffic, and I restarted all the relevant daemons.But the mounting still doesn't work.I looked at the setup on my Linksys router, but I don't see anything obvious there that might be getting in the way.ping and ssh recognize my names for the two machines and work properly, bu t I've also tried using the numeric local ip addresses.I tried with the program showmount on B to see if there was any connectivity and I getB% showmount -e Aand I get the responseclint_create:RPC: Port mapper failure - RPC: unable to receive.I used to manage a departmental network and set up nfs mounts all the time, but things were simpler then.
