Fedora :: Scribus 1.4.0 RC1 Not In Updates Testing
Feb 19, 2011
It was released a couple days ago, and the Scribus team always sends new releases to Fedora, but on my Fedora 14 x86_64 computer I can't find it in updates-testing:
Code:
# yum install scribus --enablerepo=updates-testing
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
updates-testing/metalink | 15 kB 00:00
updates-testing | 4.7 kB 00:00
updates-testing/primary_db | 880 kB 00:00
Setting up Install Process
Package scribus-1.3.9-1.fc14.x86_64 already installed and latest version
Nothing to do
I can always download the RPM and install it directly, but I prefer to use yum. Did the updates-testing people misplace it? Or did the Scribus team forget to send it to Fedora?

I am using Fedora 13 and I have one program (wine) that I need to start grabbing for the updates-testing repo instead of the default repositories in order to get newer versions. I think I can figure out how to add that repository, but I need to know if there are any others I need to disable or any other changes I need to make to my system so that I don't confuse my set up with conflicting updates.
Also, is there anything special I need to do to be sure that only that one program is grabbed from the testing repo when I run regular updates?

I am using Fedora 14 and I need to install the libudev-devel package, but the following error occurs:
Error: Package: libudev-devel-161-8.fc14.i686 (updates)

This is because the actual version I have installed is:

I'm running Debian testing, and am very happy with it. But, I have a question. Let's say that package A has a dependency (package B). A new version of package A is released into testing, but package B, it's dependency hasn't been updated yet. What happens in a situation like that when I try to update my computer?

I am transferring from Word into Scribus a 20 chapter novel and would welcome some guideance. There are no images, only text. I do have the Scribus Offical Manual but find sections of it confusing. Can someone give me some guidance on:use of Master Pages. Do I have to set up a separate one for each chapter? Will this allow me to insert page numbers in the header area? Will I have to link the text frames (pages) of each chapter?

For anyone interested in testing new xorg stuff, here it is: [URL]. The good news is that this package set should work fine in either 13.1 or -current. The build box is 13.1, so I know they're compatible there; however, I'm running them on both 13.1 and -current systems, so I'm pretty sure they'll work on either. Be sure to read the NOTES file before you go digging around in PACKAGES.

Today I did a fresh install of 11.04 (beta), but I have the same problem on my 10.10 box too. However, I know it's not right, since my laptop and upstairs box (both running 10.10) look fine. The problem is that Scribus looks like a Windows 95 application. I assume that the problem may be with the Qt support.I installed the Qt setting manager and set the theme to GTK+, but it had no effect.

someone decided for whatever reason to ship Suse 11.4 with a broken version of Scribus. Not only is the application missing in the KDE-Menu after installation (had to add it manually) but it is crashing frequently. Whenever one adds new text in a Textbox (which will NOT be formated with the specified default font but the first in the list) and then immediately changes the font without first leaving the input-focus of that box: Segfault / signal 11. I understand that there is a RC2 out by now and the specific error seems to be fixed by that.
Now my question is: After having decided to ship sUSE 11.4 with a RC: Will further RCs and maybe the final release of scribus be shipped by the OpenSuse Update? Or does the user have to manually install a working version of that software?

I use Scribus 1.4.4 without any changes from the Debian stable repository.
Each time when I edit text in the layout mode (not in the text editor) the program crashes with a "signal #11" message:
Code: Select all$ scribus
TIFFFetchNormalTag: Warning, Incompatible type for "RichTIFFIPTC"; tag ignored.
TIFFFetchNormalTag: Warning, Incompatible type for "RichTIFFIPTC"; tag ignored.

Scribus crashes due to Signal #11
Calling Emergency Save
Segmentation fault
On Wheezy I was using Scribus also, but without such problems. Unfortunately I often need to use the text editing in the layout mode in order to adjust the text flow for the final layout.

I have already open a thread in scribus forum but I am not sure if they know the solution, and I don't think is specifically related to scribus. I am receiving a generic unknown cmake error with QT5 library when try to compile Scribus 1.5, probably I need to install some library more but which?
Code: Select allcmake ../scribus -Wno-dev -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX:PATH=/usr/local/bin/

I use Scribus for designing leaflets and broshures. Unfortunately with the most recent version in the stable branch the program crashes each time I try to edit text in layout mode. I didn't have this problem in older versions. So I wonder if this is a bug others noticed in Scribus 1.4.4 on Debian GNU/Linux 8 (jessie) 32-bit.
For normal text editing I use the text edit mode anyway but when I try to fix line breaks it's always hard to not instantly see what I am doing. So even if I just want to insert a single character the program crashes with the following message: Scribus crashes due to Signal #11

Being a LAMP snob, it pains me to even think these thoughts, but .I'm running FC-9, and developing websites, mainly using PHP - well the whole LAMP thing. I now find the need to test/code for IE. To that end I'm thinking VMware, VitrualBox, etc. loaded up with that "other" OS.
I'm sure others have gone down this path. I'm guessing the answer is Win-7. My main question is: OK, I do a virgin buy and install and register it on my VM. Six months later I want to change from VM-X to VM-Y and I reinstall - what is MS's feelings on VM's.

I am interested in doing some testing for Fedora. I want to be able to test nightly builds of fedora. I currently am running F12 and depend on it to do daily work and don't want to risk breaking it just for testing. I wanted to know how fellow fedoraforum members do testing of new fedora builds? Do they have several root partitions to install a working and testing install? Do they put in a virtual machine?

I just found new mesa-dri drivers in the updates-testing repo, installed all of them, uninstalled kmod-nvidia, and it just worked with my geforce 9500GT. For me, this is a huge step forward, the only thing still giving problems is the DVI signal, so I'm stuck in VGA. Even then, I was able to get a better resolution with the DVI signal using this testing drivers than with the nvidia ones (I tried several links suggested by DBelton in the nvidia-installation thread for fixing the DVI issue, to no avail).

I recently purchased a Quadro FX 4800 and tried to install it on Fedora 10. During the installation, Fedora didn't recognize my new graphics card and began installing the OS in text mode. I stopped the installation and tried to start over, this time I passed the following command: linux resolution=1024x768. I then proceeded with the installation, and again, I was posed with a text mode installation. I continued with the text mode install and when Fedora was done installing, I rebooted and system just locked up.
At this point I was frustrated, so I reinstalled my old 8800 graphics card and started a new install with something that worked in the past. When the install was done, I loaded the latest NVIDIA drivers and the rebooted. I reinstalled my new graphics card (Quadro FX 4800) then powered up my system. I thought everything was good to go and all of a sudden my system flickered and then locked up during the 'Anacron' testing phase. I then rebooted with the "Ctrl+Alt+Del" hotkeys, but my system always locks up during the 'Anacron' testing sequence. I am aware that the Quadro FX 4800 is a few months old, but how can I get it to work in linux? It has gotten so bad, that I had to resort to using MS Vista.
System specs:
Intel Core Duo Quad Core
4 gigs DDR2
SATA RAID 0
Mobo: 680i SLI
800WATT Power Supply

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:
"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."
So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?

There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?

So, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).
ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.
Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?
Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.

I'm running CentOS 5.4 and noticed that for the past month there haven't been any new updates showing up either on 'yum check-update' or 'yum update' (I'm interested in basic and security updates). Although this may be right, I wonder if there is an online reference where I can check the updates that are released for CentOS (security bulletins) and make sure if there is anything wrong with my update system.
