Fedora Servers :: Setting Directories (But Not Contents) As Read Only In Samba
Apr 8, 2011
So I finally managed to get my Samba file server working () but now I have a question. On the server I have 4 folders, each being used for a certain topic. How would I set the folders as read only but not the contents, so that way remote users can read/write to the folder but can't delete or rename the folder itself? Also, if I restart the Linux box it will cease to show on the Windows Network unless I delete the Samba share and remake.

I have it set right now to be open so that there's no need to type in username and password information. It works great. I can type \*IP Address* on my WinXP laptop while on the network, and it brings me to the Public folder that I'm trying to share. But, when I click on the folder to open it up, it just sits there and eventually will give a userid/password prompt or will give me an access denied error.
Here is my smb.conf:
#SMB.CONF
[global]

I'm trying to configure a per user samba login for full access to the user's home directory.Mounting the shared directory works flawless when mounting from Windows. I can read, write, create without problems. However, when mounting from Linux the shared space is readonly.

I have a computer running Fedora 11. I wanted to use samba in my office. So I configured the /etc/samba/smb.conf ,but it did not work well : Windows can find samba,but when I tap in username and password,samba request them again , and the same thing continues in a loop. So I copied another computer's smb.conf (which is also a Fedora 11,samba runs well in this one).I copied this file to /etc/samba/ ,then samba can't satart up . I read from /var/log/samba/log.smbd.log : Unable to open configuration file "/etc/samba/smb.conf": Permission denied Even if I use: chmod 777 /etc/samba/smb.conf
why I can't login samba from Windows:
[global]
workgroup = MYGROUP
server string = Samba Server Version %v
; netbios name = MYSERVER
; interfaces = lo eth0 192.168.1.99/24

I've got a situation where I would normally use NFS, but cannot. So in it's place I need to use a samba share (even though it's linux -> linux). I need it completely open and world writeable as if I had done an rw in an NFS export. I thought I had it as when logged in as a user I can edit delete etc. however the apache user seems to be struggling with creating files.
Here's my smb.conf as it stands.
Code:
[global]
workgroup = WGRP
server string = Samba Server Version %v
security = user
passdb backend = tdbsam
unix extensions = no
[tmp]
comment = Temp Directory
path = /var/tmp
public = yes
guest ok = yes
writeable = yes
browseable = yes
[sites]
comment = Sites Directory
path = /var/www/sites
public = yes
guest ok = no
write list = siteusr
writeable = yes
create mask = 0777
browseable = no
security mask = 0777
directory security mask = 0777
note that the drive is mapped as user siteusr
What I can do to open it up more?

I have recently developed the need for having a file server and am interested in setting up my desktop as a Samba File Server. The problem is that I need to be able to access it from outside networks (physically I'm about 10 miles away from my home network),o I need to also set up some sort of DynDNS service so that I can access the server from anywhere.With this, with setting up a DynDNS, setting up Samba, and setting up my machine to be secure enough for these types of actions. (I just want to make sure it is secure enough since it will need to be detectable from the internet.)

I'm trying to load a HP Proliant w/ Fedora 11 and setting up as a WFS using Samba. However, I'm a bit confused on how to do it. Right now I have 2 36.4GB drives in RAID 1+0 and 4 146.8GB drives in a RAID 5 config. I wanna use the smaller drive for the OS and the bigger drive for the storage. I've managed to load the OS fine, the problem is I can't figure out how to mount the 4 146.8GB drives as a single logical volume and set Samba to use it. Right now all the RAIDs are setup using the built-in Compaq Smart Array utility (or whatever it's called) that's built into the SCSI hardware or BIOS.

Ive managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?

I recently installed Apache on Lucid Lynx (Macbook 1.1) using the following tutorial: [URL] Everything appears to work correct except that when I browse http://localhost/ in Firefox, I cannot see any of the directories. Although, files such as html documents are visible. When I view the /var/www directory using the default graphical file browser, all of its child directories have Xs over their icons. When I attempt to open the directory "js", the following error message displays:The folder contents could not be displayed.
You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "js".
I figured this was preventing Firefox from viewing the directories. So I launched it with the "gksu" command to see if it would help. I still couldn't see directories when browsing http://localhost/ I'm basically trying to achieve functionality identical to the MAMP local server for Mac OS X. I'm about to start a LAMP project for a new client so having this up and running is important!

I have two 1TB hard drives, one in my Linux server (running Debian, but I thought I'd ask here anyway) and one in my Windows desktop.
What I would like is a file synchronization program that will automatically (or scheduled via cron) synchronize my hard drive on Linux with my hard drive on Windows via Samba.

On an Apache2 server someone else setup, I have a folder with drwx--x--x permission and the php file can still write in the folder. But on my own setup, I need to set the same folder to drwx--x-wx. Inside the folder, I have a index.php that runs just by setting rwx--x--x but on my own setup, I need to allow read permission for others/group before it can run: rwxr-xr-x (or else I get a blank page). I tried changing the folder and files to root but it's the same.

I am trying to set up samba on my CentOS Linux 5.5 server, and I've gotten to the point where the Windows Sharing Center recognized the server, can even connect to it with credentials, but when I try to access a directory, I get this Message:Code: Windows cannot access \HOMEpublicCheck the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. Try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. When I click diagnose, it does not fix the issue.This happens with any directory I create. I chmod the directories to 777, so I don't see the problem with permissions.
This is my config file. (smb.conf):

I have a few ubuntu servers which have samba shares on the network and for the most part have had little trouble with them. Recently we purchased a few iMac's for one of our deptartments and, while we're able to access the shares, all the files on them are read-only and we are unable to delete/modify files using the iMacs. This is not an issue with any of our windows machines (W2K, WinXP, Vista).

I recently had to rescue files from a dying hard drive using Photorec. However, it dumped the files randomly in many different directories. Is there a way I can transfer the contents of these directories into one master directory without the file structure. For example, I have folders 1 through 10 as subdirectories in folder X. How can I transfer the contents of all those folders into folder Y while getting rid of the subdirectories 1 - 10?

My Fedora box is giving me an SELinux security error:
Code: Summary:
SELinux is preventing the samba daemon from reading users' home directories.
Detailed Description:
SELinux has denied the samba daemon access to users' home directories. Someone
is attempting to access your home directories via your samba daemon. If you only
setup samba to share non-home directories, this probably signals an intrusion
attempt. For more information on SELinux integration with samba, look at the
samba_selinux man page. (man samba_selinux)
Allowing Access: If you want samba to share home directories you need to turn on the
samba_enable_home_dirs boolean: "setsebool -P samba_enable_home_dirs=1"
Fix Command:
setsebool -P samba_enable_home_dirs=1
Additional Information:
Source Context system_u:system_r:smbd_t:s0
Target Context unconfined_u:object_r:user_home_dir_t:s0

I wish to prevent the samba messages (mainly nmbd and winbindd) from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages). I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.
nmbd.* /dev/null
smbd.* /dev/null
winbindd.* /dev/null
For interests sake the messages I'm getting are below (I'm not concerned about the messages themselves, I can chase them up at my leisure via the samba logs) Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet xx.yy.z.zz for name DOMAIN<1d>. Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: This response was from IP xx.yy.z.zz, reporting an IP address of xx.yy.z.zz.

I am trying to read the contents of a file into something else. I have a file.txt that I am working with, I want to read the file and take the data and run some commands with the data that it read. So if it read www.yahoo.com I want to be able to nslookup. Does that make sense? I have been trying to use the read command but that does not seem to work. I even was trying to read filename | > filename to see if I could even read any of the data at all. Nothing is working.
