View 8 Replies View RelatedJust upgraded to fc12, noticed that there was no menu bar (the one with "file", "edit", etc....) on my users/groups configuration program, but I figured that it was just a change from fc11. But now I'm noticing more stuff that doesn't have one that ought to (gedit, filezilla, and most importantly, nautilus).On the other hand, firefox does have the menu bar, so it's not a global issue. I have compiz-fusion/emerald, although I'm not sure that would make a difference. I've tried a few different themes thinking it might be the theme I'm using, but no dice.

However, I'm unable to change from one desktop to another - from what I've read, there's meant to be a drop-down menu at the login page allowing you to select the desktop but I don't have one.
I am a beginner with Fedora (mostly used Ubuntu in the past few years, but figure it's time for a change) so I may be missing something obvious.

I dont find the menu item for this function any more in F12 (System -> Preferences ->?) Which package added that functionality and is there a version for F12? I really miss it
just noticed that the windows are already set to respond that way (by default) only that the title bars don't indicate a change in focus.
F13 just installed for me on a server back in the states for me. I VNC into it to setup my personal website. The GNOME menu listings do not have the tool I am familiar with that tells me which process are running, allows me to stop and start them, and to install them I believe if they are on the machine. I can see that MYSQL are on the machine with the Add/Remove tool. I also see myphpAdmin. I need to get both of these up and running. I should be able to do this with out going back to 1980's terminal commands right?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAt least the DVD I downloaded a few days ago was nothing like the one that was downloaded on release, most worked I'm missing a couple of important things on the gnome menus, nothing on system>preferences or Admin for printing, I had to configure the printer directly with the CUPs admin panel. These no way to edit the menus, right clicking on the bar has no effect, and I haven't form menu-edit in the repos with yumex, or the gnome control pane. Have these been dropped in FC14 ?

When I try to open some file, including directories, "Open with..." window appears.
I installed Fedora Core 13 x86-64 from the installation DVD and picked the "Software Development" installation. I notice that the Applications->System Tools menu doesn't have "File Browser" on it.
Nautilus is installed, so I can create a launcher for it. I'm merely curious whether this is a change or bug in FC 13? Or should I suspect that I myself deleted the file browser launcher accidentally? The machine is a laptop and I find the mousepad awkward to use.
This isn't just an Ubuntu complaint -- PCLinuxOS is guilty too. I'm pretty tired of having to type in my password for anything little thing. How can I disable password authorization dialog boxes except for more important stuff like package management? Linux Mint does have a 15 minute grace period so that you don't have to retype your password after having done it once.
View 1 Replies View RelatedFirst off, I have spent several hours searching this and other forums looking for an answer to this, and have tried several things, none of which have fixed this issue. Here is what I'm seeing:I performed a new install of FC12 on a Thinkpad R40, 512Mb RAM, with a 40Gb HDD, 38Gb useable, from a live CD. That leaves a little over 9Gb free for expansion. All went well with the install, but the post-boot upgrade would not complete due to an error with the abrt files. I found a thread discussing this and used the suggested method of performing the updates from a shell, which worked fine. There were LOTS of installations, updates, and replacements, and finally the shell returned "Complete!". After a reboot I was going through the Fedora_12_ User_ Guide.pdf and noticed many items missing from the System Menu as described in section 3.1.1.3 "The System menu". Another thread seemed to address a similar issue with su - then yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment", which I did. It updated over 870 items, then completed with no errors. At this point I logged out and back in, no change, and then tried a reboot, which also did not change anything. Finally, I'm appealing to the community.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI first installed linux as ubuntu version 9.04 straight off of a Computer Active CD and liked it so started to delve into file permissions and authorisations, simple stuff I suppose just so I could feel my way around things for a while. Using the built in Ubuntu software centre I downloaded and installed a prog which handles authorisations and I found that very helpful but then through the update manager I installed the latest distribution update (9.10) and now find that the authorisation software only lists a couple of things that I can get to and consequently every time I mount one of my hard disks I'm asked for my admin password even though I am logged in as administrator which is a hassle,
a small one but there all the same, as a newbie I realise it must be me not understanding something but I just dont know what, also in the previous version right clicking on the logging out panel gave you an option to remove the 60 second shutdown or restart delay and that has disappeared in the new version, again its really only just a nuisance thing but I find that sorting out this sort of thing will help me to understand the system
Is there any yum package out there that would enable me to encrypt single files/folders via the right click menu (the one with Open, broswer etc etc)

I've read some threads as to how to do this and came to know that we need to skip installation of LILO in slackware installation and an entry for slackware in the menu.lst file of grub. View 3 Replies View Relatedi have an old p3 compqa desktop install 10.04.2 lts on it. install went ok. set to autologin. when it does so, gnome starts but there is no bottom or top menu bar. keyboard shortbut for terminal works and keyboard shortcut alt-f1 for running programs works but i would like to get the top menu bar or at least know a shortbut to get to network preference because i can't seem to get the machine configured for net access...

1. I can't find the Konqueror file manager in Kde menu. I can of course add it, but I'm wondering if it's by design or if it's a problem specific to my installation.
2. When I set my plasma desktop to folder view, activity, (whatever, I still don't understand how do folder views and activities relate, it's the most f****d up design ever) to get a full screen desktop (like in Kde 3), and my taskbar panel is at the top of the screen,then I get an "impression" of the default desktop widget behind my background (tried both wallpaper and a solid color). It seems to go away when I move panel to bottom of screen (then can move back to top and it's ok).See attached image.
3. Can't find a way to change color of Title bars. I'm right now using Oxygen widget style with Oxygen theme. I can't live with these gray bars which are even the same color for both active and inactive Tile bars (design idiocy of highest caliber IMO). Changing the color seemed to work when using Plastik just fine.
Good day, having a spot of bother with Openoffice, for some unknown reason im finding majority of the menu & button names have been replaced with "O" characters instead. Its doesn't effect all, but for example in the Writer, the only drop down menu at the top being render correctly is "Table". code...
All the buttons/sub buttons still work if you can guess where their pointing!
The only way I can seem to solve it is to remove "openoffice.org-gnome" & "openoffice.org-gtk" package.
Ive tried a complete reinstall already. Its usable without the above gnome and gtk extras but obviously not as nice to look at.
Im sure it was working fine the last time I used it?
