Fedora :: SSH Not Working / Timing Out After Upgrade
May 19, 2011
A few weeks ago I upgraded one of my laptop from Fedora 13 to Fedora 14 (using pre-upgrade). The upgrade went smoothly and no errors appeared. However ever since the upgrade ssh is not working anymore. I've tried various servers inside and outside the local network. I can't contact any of them. In all cases I get:
Code:
ssh: connect to host aaa.bbb.ccc port 22: Connection timed out
I've tried to get more info using the -vvv option form ssh, but it doesn't mean too much to me:
Code:
OpenSSH_5.5p1, OpenSSL 1.0.0d-fips 8 Feb 2011
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: Applying options for *
debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0
debug1: Connecting to aaa.bbb.ccc [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] port 22.
debug1: connect to address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx port 22: Connection timed out
ssh: connect to host aaa.bbb.ccc port 22: Connection timed out
Actions so far:
- checked internet connection. No problem there. Another laptop is working fine using the same connection and the same ethernet cable. That laptop is still using Fedora 13, since I didn't want to get stuck without ssh completely.
- checked "messages" log. No messages at the time of ssh connect attempt.
- checked "secure" log. No messages at the time of ssh connect attempt.
- checked the firewall settings. The settings are exactly the same as before the upgrade (when ssh was still working). Moreover, the settings are the same as the other laptop that is working.
- temporarily switched off the firewall. No difference.
- temporarily switched off selinux. No difference.
So it doesn't seem to be a firewall or selinux problem. And I know the connection is working, so it does not seem to be a routing problem either. What am I missing here?
System specs:
- Asus EEE PC (1 GB RAM, intel atom processor);
- Fully up-to-date Fedora 14 (kernel 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.i686)

Running a LAMP server, CentOS as the OS.The sites always been slow, but now that ive optimized it with mysql cache, gzip compression and some other things, its really fast.Except when pages loading seem to randomly 'time out'. The browser sits on 'waiting for x.com'. Closing the browser and/or the tab and opening a new one fixes it, but then it'll happen again eventually. Clicking further links while its 'waiting for x.com' does nothing, basically the site becomes unusable until you close the tab and reopen it.
This happens on all 3 virtual servers we're running within apache. Mainly noticable on the PHPbb forums, probably because they are visited the most. It's not a slow mysql query, i turned on slow query logging over 2 seconds, and the only two hits i got on that i know are unrelated.Ive turned off some optimizations thinking they might be it, but no dice.

I've just recently started using Fedora again and have a question about BOINC.I see that Fedora 13 is using 6.10.45, but the latest recommended release is 6.10.56.What is the timing on updated RPMs for new BOINC versions? Or is there a guide to updating manually, which I've been unable to locate?

Today I updated my system, I noticed that KDE would be upgraded to 4.3. Upon restart of my computer my wireless didn't work (and still doesn't) and I cannot use the desktop effects anymore (probably the graphics driver). Is there any way I can fix those problems, or downgrade my system so everything just works? I'm using Fedora 11 KDE (64-bits). And I've kept a list of all updates. Ok, I figured that it was a different version of the kernel, the update set the other kernel to default. I'm back to 2.6.29.6-217.2.8.fc11.x86_64 and everything works.

I just completed upgrading from F10 to F12. I had a few problems but now everything works just perfect, except my Apache server does'nt execute the PHP pages on the web-server. The php-pages use to work just fine. I have Apache/2.2.13 (Unix), with PHP 5.3.0 (cli) (built: Nov 17 2009 19:19:17). I tried to remove alle PHP rpm-packages and install them again with no luck.
I have checked the httpd.conf file and it include the following lines:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php5
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php .php
and
LoadModule php5_module modules/libphp5.so
I get a msg. from the last line, that the php5 module is already loaded.
I have restarted httpd-service. I have the following php modules installed:
php-devel-5.3.0-7.fc12.i686
php-cli-5.3.0-7.fc12.i686
php-common-5.3.0-7.fc12.i686
php-5.3.0-7.fc12.i686
php-pdo-5.3.0-7.fc12.i686
php-mysql-5.3.0-7.fc12.i686
Seems that in the new versions of PHP/Apache with F12 you need to write:
<?php .....?> and not just <? ... ?>

I have used preupgrade to moved from fc14 to fc15. With fc14 I had my two usb 3.0 ports working. However, with fc15 my usb 3.0 ports are disabled. I have read the instruction at the common fc15 bugs doc and removed the kernel parameter xhci.enable=1 and also erased the file /etc/pm/config.d/xhci. Still the usb 3.0 ports are not working. I am using kernel 2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64. I cannot use the 2.6.38.6-27.fc15.x86_64 since there no nvidia drivers for it.

I'm running Fedora 15 KDE on a Sony Vaio VPCS13V9E. No problems in connecting to the wlan. Today I upgraded the system. There was an upgrade for Network Manager. After the upgrade the system is not able to connect to the modem - router (Linksys WAG320N) any more. Network manager keeps on crashing and sends messages like "network disabled" or "connection failed". Kde demon is reporting errors too. I guess the new version of Network Manager is bugged, because before the upgrade it did work well ... (unbelievable!).

I've been running FC10 with all updates and had downloaded the FC11 DVD. Yesterday I upgraded to FC 11 using the DVD and it appeared that everything went fine. However when I tried to do ayum updateI got the following error. There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was:
No module named yum

It's possible that the above module doesn't match the current version of Python, which is:

[GCC 4.4.0 20090313 (Red Hat 4.4.0-0.26)]

My audio worked completely perfectly running Fedora 14. I upgraded to Fedora 15 and discovered my audio no longer worked. As far as I know I didn't change anything. I do hear random pops and clicks from my speakers every few seconds. It's a bummer because this worked out of the box on Fedora 14 without any screwing around, and now it's totally broken in fedora 15. Everything else about my upgrade has been going pretty well, but life without sound is not nearly as fun and it's frustrating to have something not work that used to work just fine.
Here is some information and things I've tried:
- Just for grins I booted from the Fedora 15 live CD and observe the exact same issue as I see when I boot from my HD (just pops and clicks out of the audio.)
- motherboard: ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 (using onboard audio)
- lspci reports: 00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40)
- cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 | grep -i codec reports: Codec: Realtek ALC892 (this is what the motherboard manual lists as the audio hardware.)
- I've run pavumeter as some have suggested and I see outputs on both left/right channels when audio is playing (but still hear nothing but clicks and pops.)
- I've run "alsamixer -c 0" and verified all my levels are maxed out.
- I've opened up the sound settings dialog box and made sure the correct hardware device is selected, tried different profiles, tested left/right speakers, still no progress at all.
- I know I have the speakers on and plugged into the correct output jack, but just for fun I tried plugging the speakers into each of the other possible jacks, but that didn't help.
- lsmod (fedora 15) reports:

I have a Broadcom wireless card in my hp dv6500z laptop, I had it all working properly in FC9 thanks to bbfuller and his post on the subject. After I upgraded to FC11 I have been unable to get it to connect.
I can see my neighbor's sites and suppose I could see my own if the SSID was allowed to broadcast but I keep that turned off. I put in all of the setting, including the network security key, but it won't connect, then when I go back and look again, the security key is not even close to what I put in; it gets changed to a huge string of characters.
I redownloaded broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2.tar and followed the instruction on the post once again but no luck, which, after I thought about it, was a waste of time because if I can see other's wireless, then the card must be working. I have tried using Network Manager and not using Network Manager and still no luck...

I am running Fedora 14. I've had an ASUS wireless adapter working for a few months now, with no problems. Today, I installed updates, one of which required a computer reboot (not just logging out and back in). I rebooted the computer, and when it came back up, the wireless adapter did not work. The adapter is visible after lsusb, but there is no wireless showing after iwconfig. What happened? How do I fix it?

I can get to other websites just fine so far. Though it looks like Office Depot won't let me in either. If I boot into Windows I can connect to either site just fine.

Have had issues with my 10.4 Server regularly. I believe it's something that I've done wrong in some of the hosts settings or the like. When I try and login to the server, especially on startup, I get messages saying the login attempt timed out after 60 seconds and when I login via ssh it boots me from the connection after about 60 seconds of trying to login. It's after entering the password so it's something to do with authentication most likely. I think the issue is with my /etc/hosts file as I said before. Hostname is blackbox and it's only meant to be a local network server.
/etc/hosts file:
Code:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.1.5 blackbox.localdomain blackbox
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts

I just installed my first ever install of Linux (used Fedora) and am using SSH to access it from my Windows machine. It keeps timing out. Is there something I need to set to make it available all the time?
I was able to get the SSH on and to autostart just fine but when I boot up it only works half of the time. I have to move the mouse and keyboard on the Linux machine before it will respond.
Also if I am working on my Windows machine and don't move the mouse or keyboard every now and then it doesn't work.

I ran the Kvpnc wizard and imported my config file and when I try to connect it always says connection timed out.I can connect to OpenVPN without a problem using the terminal, all I can say is kvpnc is a real pain and I don't get why I can't connect with it if I can connect without a problem from the terminal.I thought this was suppose to be a simple GUI that you just imported your config add in your cert and the cert path and that's all.

I'm experiencing an occasional frustration using Evolution with my work email which is on an MS Exchange 2003 server.Everything usually works well enough, but from time to time I'll try to retrieve a message,Is there a setting I've missed in Evolution that might take care of this, or some other workaround?Let me re-emphasize that the server is a 2003 Exchange server (and a source of endless frustration for a non-windows user). It's not a 2007 or 2010 Exchange server, which is what most companies use these days.

I have a complex network. ADSL broadband comes into the house and connects to an Orange Livebox. An Ethernet cable then connects the Livebox to a more powerful router, a DrayTek Vigor 2710Vn. The reason for this is that the Livebox has a second line capability using Voip, but it is not powerful enough to get around my stone house. The DrayTek router has Voip capability, but as yet Orange will not connect the Voip line to it. I connect to this system with Ubuntu. Android, Windows and I-phone. I can connect to either of the routers, though I usually use the DrayTek.
Voip on the Livebox does not require a computer to run it, you just plug a normal phone into it and use it to get free calls. I actually take this line into a Panasonic telephone switch to give me a 2 line system around the house. The problem with this set-up is that after a short time something happens to the network which prevents Ubuntu computers connecting to it. Windows machines, I-phones and Android phones connect, but Ubuntu does not. If I re-boot the Livebox, or in an extreme case take it back to it's factory settings, the Ubuntu machines can connect again, but it's only temporary.
The fact that fixing Livebox sorts the problem definitely points to Ubuntu being innocent, but at the moment I can't do without the Livebox. That means, for the moment, having to stay with Windows. If I post the output log after a failed connection attempt, all it would show is the connection timing out. Why is Ubuntu so sensitive to network problems that are not of it's making. Is there anything I can do about it other than changing my ISP. I am considering that, but other factors make that difficult.

I can't bring up an Inventel UR054g usb card id 1435:0427 with Slackware 13 custom kernel 2.6.32.4 SMP
Using firmware 2.13.24.0.lm87.arm (supposed to work) gives a time-out
dmesg:
Code:

[ 6611.488705] p54: rx_mtu reduced from 3240 to 2384

I've tried using other firmwares and also extracting them myself from the windows drivers; always gives a time-out.
Used this card before with Slackware 12 and worked correctly
