Recently I've been having an issue where every now and then, all of a sudden fedora logs me out and takes me to the login screen.
All my unsaved work is lost and I have to log back in again.
Is there any way to diagnose this problem and figure out how to solve it?
I wanted to try KDE 4.3 on Fedora 11. I enabled the testing repos and updated. However after the update, I restarted and when I login, it takes me back to the login screen. I've tried to login with the gnome desktop and also as other users but it still took me back to the login screen.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I have Ubuntu Lucid machines about 20 of them. Configured via ldap authentication. I seem to be running into a rather strange logout problem. Whenever users click logout they're logged out, however after that all i get is the background screen with the cursor. The cursor is able to move, but no login screen.If i go to a terminal window alt+f1 and do a service gdm restart, then the login screen goes back to normal.

Only ever use the KDE desktop so completely removed XFE and the rudimentary Gnome left behind on the install.
Not a desperate problem just an annoyance.
Everything works fine, except if I logout the next login screen is using a really tiny font and I can't seem to find anywhere to change it.
The DPI must be about 10, as I can't even read it when blown up on my projector.
Starting today, when I click on shutdown, it takes me back to login scree instead of shutting down the computer.
From the login screen, if I press on shutdown on the bottom right, it will indeed shutdown !
Clean install of 10.4 I select shutdown and it takes me back to the login screen. Trying to shutdown from that screen does the same.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm pretty new to Ubuntu and absolutely loving it. However, I've been having some problems since upgrading to 11.04 (gnome, not unity). Around once or twice a session, the screen will go black, show some text, and kick me out to the login screen. It's not a full restart, but it stays on that black screen for about 20-30 seconds. I was finally able to write down all of the text it displays.
On the opposite side of the screen, next to each entry would simply be "ok." After searching the forums, it seems like a lot of these problems are due having a certain type of graphics card. I checked in the terminal, and I guess I have a "ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M]."
I downloaded and burnt the Kubuntu 10.04 release to a CD. I tried to install it. First time, couldn't find the disks and eventually it froze. Ok, second try, when it's contacting the "time server" (or whatever) another freeze, but this time I notice everything is running fine and then get a nice little image with the current time (increasing seconds and all). Third attemp, clicked the "update this installer" and it went fine. "Yay!" I thought. Well, a few minutes in my beautiful 10.04 system and again, another freeze. Hit the power button and to my surprise a "Shutdown" dialog shows up with a countdown. After 30 seconds it logs out and mouse is working again. I log back in and come here to write this long post, and as I was writing the title "Random mouse/ke..." guess what? Yeah, it froze again. And the little bar that goes after the writing continued happily blinking. Hit the power button but this time mouse and keyboard were still frozen in the login screen.
Short version: mouse and keyboard randomly freeze while the rest of the system apparently work fine.
I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 and I have this annoying issue. it does happen very often, but enough to be a problem (atleast once a day or more).While I'm browsing the web (not really doing much of anything else) the screen goes black with some text. I don't get enough time to read the text and I'm returned to the login screen. I'm completely logged off, my session isn't still there when I log back in

Whenever the screensaver locks the screen (manually or due to a timeout), the unlocking of the screensaver causes my account to logout and I'm left at the GDM login screen. I've been seeing that the "work around" is to turn off the screensaver lock.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have laptop with Mobility Radeon HD3200 graphics. Gnome 3 works more or less fine until I start Skype. When Skype is running switching between the windows is a pain in the a$$. The screen flickers, looks crappy, takes ages to refresh, etc. Anyone experience similar things? I also noticed that when I start yumex I also get the screen doing the same things as with Skype, but to a much lesser extent and only for a few seconds. View 4 Replies View Relatedif I reboot the computer, I get the grub menu and am able to choose between Win7 and Fc15. A couple of times during installation the screen flashed black and diplayed a message for a brief second. I can't read that fast but it says something like "DRM nouveau- unknown or unsupported chipset" and one more line that I can't catch. When this happens, I see the pre-login loading screen, the one that shows an icon of a hard drive, network, and so on as each resource is secured. I can log back in, but this starts a new session- it doesn't remember what I was doing. I had to redo the install and setup several times because of this.
I can log in and so on normally, but the black screen and message will appear at random, forcing me to start all over, which is really frustrating. what's going on? Is it the video card? How do I install a driver for it? Also, the hard drive in question has been through a lot. could it have a bad sector or something? Windows didn't even want to "see" it, that's why Fedora is installed on there.
I am having a frequent (once every 3-4 minute) random momentary black screen and it recovers after 2-3 seconds. I have notice this since the early Fedora 12, but the frequency increases lately.I have turned off the KMS, KDE power management, and screen saver, but it did not help. I have radeon 3450.

On fedora 13 Im trying to use nouveau with the 3d support and for some reason i get little pink pixels appearing over my screen in ramdom places on ramdom. please see screen shot below. I used to get this on fedora 12 also before using the nvidia driver, any clues how to fix this?
also, I have two monitors (well one is a tv) any how most of the time i dont use the tv, so in the settings i switch it off, but for some reason when i log out the default settings are to use both screens and have the login prompt on the wrong monitor, how do i set my monitor settings to be so in all situations?
I am using Xubuntu 10.10 64bit . When I press the quit or logoff buttons on the desktop it takes me to the logon screen and then at the bottom right corner it allows me to shutdown or reboot. I would like to bypass this screen entirely,and just shutdown reboot from the desktop. Only I use this machine at home ,no none else needs to log on. Is there any way to do this?

I have a fresh install of kubuntu 9.10 which only seems to play the start up and shut down noise. Audio from games, flash videos, and other sources do not appear to work.
I've been searching around, and while there seem to be a few threads on this topic, none have solutions. Where should I begin?
Running Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 and Compiz with cube enabled. I have a BTC 5100 PS/2 mini keyboard, and if keyboard layout is set to USA it works fine. Keyboard model is set to "Generic 105-key (Intl) PC" and I don't see an entry for BTC 5100.
But every time I logout or reboot, the system adds an entry for "USA International (with dead keys)" below the entry for "USA" in the keyboard layouts tab and then I lose keys like the apostrophe key. I have no idea where these setting are kept. I've checked .gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd/%gconf.xml, but see no change when I blow the second keyboard layout away.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMeerkat user and loving it so far. However, I've noticed a weird glitch in Ubuntu: when I boot up, everything works fine. However, if I logout and log back in, the panels are different! Instead of the black ones, the panels are now grey with different icons.
I've tried restarting the panels using gconftool and pkill gnome but it didn't work. Any suggestions? I've attached a screenshot for reference.
I experience the following issue with Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64, kernel 2.6.32-25-generic: When I login after having logged out, the theme is reset from Radiance to a quite coarse one withs grey folders and very basic icons. System|Preferences|Appearance->Theme tab just considers it Custom. No change to window borders, and trying to change the theme just affects the borders. Does not happen on a Ubuntu 10.10 32 bits installation.

This problem showed up on two computers after a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 followed by an install of the Kubuntu desktop. Might as well install Kubuntu desktop because some of the utilities I like to use (Kate, Krusader, etc) require that major parts of it be installed anyway. What appears to be happening is that the user-dirs.dir folder is getting ignored and is overwritten either on logout or login and the ~/Desktop folder is being deleted.
i have installed Ubuntu 11.04 beta release 64 bit and frequently updating with latest updates(allmost all). now i'm having some problem, while i'm login to GUI interface it shows a blank screen(seems logging) and in the next screen it shows login screen again.(Immediate logout). i found some messages from syslog like below:

I am trying to install fedora 12 on my computer. I have burned the live cd ISO and it works just fine until right before it shows the login screen. I suspect that it may have to do with my ati radeon 9800 graphics card. give me some boot options or some such thing so that I could install fedora on my computer. Also some other specs

Just started to encounter this problem recently: after entering a valid password for a given user during an SSH login, it takes at least one minute to get to a prompt. It usually takes only a second to check the password and drop me to a prompt.
I haven't had this problem before - it seems to have started this week. Only thing I've done this week is run updates. Has anyone encountered this problem recently? Any ideas or fixes that may help solve this? Server info: not exposed to the Internet, only running SSH, fully patched version of CentOS 5.5 x86_64.
