Fedora :: Plymouth After Nvidia Install
Jan 22, 2010
I've just done an update and installed my nvidia drivers when I noticed my plymouth has stopped working (I think) I only get a really boring boot and I don't really know how to fix this. I've googled around for some tutorials but they did not work.

I used leighs post to install the nvidia driver for Fedora 12 and now plymouth does not work it uses the text theme. Right before it goes into the text theme I get this message:
"Unknown boot option `nouveau.modeset=0' : ignoring"

I have successfully installed the Nvidia driver on my FC13 system that is using an Nvidia NV44 (Ge 6200) card. It seems to be working as I see the nvidia driver when I do a lsmod | grep nvidia and the glxgears program works as well as the nvidia-settings program.Basically, I did the following:
Code:
yum install kmod-nvidia-PAE
new-kernel-pkg --mkinitrd --dracut --update $(rpm -q --queryformat="%{version}-%{release}.%

Since I've been using the nvidia drivers (from rpmfusion) and followed Leigh123's nvidia guide, I don't have a Plymouth graphical boot anymore. Instead I get the black screen and the blue/white bar at the bottom. I installed the plymouth-theme-solar (or whatever) and switched to that, updated initrd too, but no difference - same thing happened. This is an AMD64 system, latest kernel, latest nvidia drivers. Snippet of grub.conf:-
title Fedora (2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64)
root (hd0,2)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64 ro root=/dev/mapper/vg_undertaker-lv_root LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYBOARDTYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us rhgb quiet selinux=0
rdblacklist=nouveau
initrd /initramfs-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64.img

I am new to linux... and I have Installed Debian as my default OS replacing Ubuntu.
I have Installed Plymouth:
# apt-get install plymouth
# /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme --list
# /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme THEME
# update-initramfs -u
Plymouth does not work. What went wrong? or what more should I do to make it work. Also how do I install themes to plymouth, which are not there in the theme package? I have come across this theme I really like but it is in tar.gz and I am looking for some guidance from the forum to run tar.gz packages.

I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid via Terminal, and everything is working nicely. However, after switching the desktop on, the OS loads OK up to GRUB loading, when new Plymouth is supposed to kick in. But all I get is a pixelated image. The five dots still flash correctly signalling the OS is loading. Apart from that, I did not notice anything else wrong.
Just to check whether it was the upgrade process to have gone wrong, I did a fresh install of Kubuntu RC, this time. As soon as I inserted the live CD, however, I could tell the end result would be the same, for the same pixelation appeared while the CD was loading. And in fact, after installation, I got the same problem (see uploaded photo). So, I'm guessing, maybe it depends on my graphic card? I'm on a Matrox G450, which has always worked fine (for example, on Kubuntu it uses kwin without a hiccup). I'm currently on Kubuntu, but the issue occurs both on it and Ubuntu, where Compiz is deactivated (don't even know if that matters), and I'm only on Metacity. If Plymouth can't be correctly displayed by my card, shouldn't it have a sort of fall-back mechanism allowing users like me to have a close-to-normal experience?

really hate the new default plymouth theme in Fedora since 11, as such I'd rather use either Solar or Spinfinity as the default plymouth themes, however F12 for some reason keeps ignoring me when I set the default theme.I downloaded all necessary packages for this and for some reason unknown to me when I boot the computer the default theme still appears, unless I switch to a VT (press F1) and then back to the plymouth boot (ESC) does it change to the theme I selected, be it Solar or Spinfinity. The symlink in /usr/share/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth is point to the right theme (i.e. /usr/share/plymouth/themes/spinfinity/spinfinity.plymouth), and yet it does not load at boot by default, do I have to remove the other "default" theme or what?

I have Fedora 12 x86_64 running the nvidia drivers from rpmfusion. I set them up using the howto's from rpmfusion and the good people here. I also run KDE as my desktop and try to keep gnome stuff to a minimum. Everything has been running fine, including the opening splash graphics.
I run updates today, and installed the update for KDE 4.3.4. The next time I booted, the startup animation ran, but hung once it finished. I know the system didn't totally crash because I was able to give it a three-finger salute and it rebooted. The next boot I set my startup parameters to disable the plymouth splash screen, and everything started up fine.

Whenever I boot fedora core 13 it starts Plymouth and a txt progress bar starts at the bottom. Whenever it gets to 100% it flickers a little bit then does nothing. The system doesn't hang I can still crrl-alt-delete and it shows the processes stopping. When it displays the programs starting it gets to jexec and nothing happens.

When I change the boot up theme in plymouth from the default, Fedora will not give me a login screen, or leave the plymouth splash screen, I like the spinfinity theme, however when I set that I cannot get to the login screen unless I hit esc when it is booting and never let the splash screen come up. This happens with both gdm and kdm. Anyone else having this problem?

I'm somewhat new to Fedora but not Linux in general. I went to install the nvidia driver as per any instructions I found on the internet that yielded results. I typed sudo yum install kmod-nvidia and eventually got a driver, blacklisted nouveau, restarted, and finally got compiz and all my desktop effects.
The problem was when I played Minecraft, which for those who don't know is a game, from a .jar file. After ~5 minutes of playing something happens and everything freezes. Video completely stops but I still have mouse control and sound(at least for anything already running). Clicking stuff does nothing and no hotkeys work to bring up anything at all. I end up having to do a reset by hand to get anything done. Turning off desktop effects didn't help.
Why is this? Did I install the wrong driver, even though kmod-nvidia should find the right one on it's own? nvidia 8800 GT is my card. Could it be the java program screwing things up royally? I can't remember if the program worked fine on it's own before the driver install, but uninstalling the driver now causes the game to fail on launch, which I guess makes sense but can't figure out if it's simply the lack of driver or if removing the driver screwed something else up. I might just reinstall fedora and start from scratch again, but before I did that I wanted to find out if I'm just installing the wrong driver and can simply find teh right one to fix all of this.

I recently attempted to install and NVidia driver and now I cannot boot the system. After then NVidia logo flashes (rather a long flash of ~30 s) I get a blank screen.
Is there a way to change the initboot file or the X-config file before the system boots the X-server?

I just updated a system to Fedora 12. It has the same partition setup as the previous Fedora 11, but now when booting it pauses with a padlock icon next to a text entry box.I'm assuming it's trying to get my password to mount the encrypted partitions I have on the drive.
However, most of the time when I'm using that computer, I don't want those partitions mounted, and I would prefer to do a luksOpen/mount manually during those times I need the data thereon. Is there a way to get plymouth to ignore those encrypted partitions while it's booting, so that bootup doesn't pause for user input? I have an empty /etc/crypttab and the partitions in question are not in /etc/fstab.
For anyone who's looking at this, pass "rd_NO_LUKS" on the command line to disable the initrd from looking for encrypted partitions to try to mount.

I can't figure out how to install the nvidia drivers for my nvidia 8800 GT video card. I've followed some other posts and all the posts seemed either incomplete, or led me down a path of which eventually broke my installation, that I needed to reinstall the entire ubuntu system.Again, it may not have been broken, i just didnt know how to get back in to the gui version of ubuntu, the instructions took me to the console terminal
1.) I've installed the ubuntu 10.10 64bit for i386 in an oracle virtualBox..
2.) downloaded from nvidia.com "NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.44.run"
3.) Stuck don't know what to do.
