Feb 6, 2010I am having problems playing dvds on my laptop which is a bluray player. I cannot even play regular dvds, I can read them and see there is stuff there, but cannot play them in mplayer or totem.

Fedora Hardware :: Save Data On Bluray Disks Of 25 Gb ( Better Than Dvds, More Space )?
May 18, 2011I want to buy another laptop. I want to use FC on it. I need bluray because I want to save data on bluray disks of 25 gb (better than dvds, more space). I have one option, a fujitsu that has bluray writer, big display (I have another one, other model, same size and it's working fine with Fc14, only some small issues).
Second option is a Dell (I had an older dell inspiron before, which worked fine with FC), more expensive, lacking a writer, but it can read bluray. If I take this, I would have to also buy an external bluray writer. Has nice specs, but I am really worried about the graphic card, whether I can make it work with Fc14. I saw some people having problems with linux and this graphic card, while searching on google.
Here's specs for both (sorry for the language from website, but I found in English other specs than these, I guess the specs can be read easily): Dell XPS L702x and FUJITSU Lifebook NH570 I am inclining more towards the Fujitsu, but haven't decided yet.

Apr 14, 2010My newly installed (but not new) DVD drive seems to play some movies some days, but others all the time. I'm pretty sure it's just a little picky about scratches. I can hear it in the drive; when I insert the disk, I can tell when it isn't spinning. When it does start spinning, that's when the Media options window pops up asking me what I want to do with the disk.

Jan 28, 2011Just built a new mini-ITX system. Installed 10.04 x64 and then spiffed it up. Now to play DVDs, I followed instructions here: [URL]. Including the troubleshooting item about chmod / chgrp. I wasn't clear whether this would be saved across reboots. And rebooted.

Nov 13, 2010I've got this weird problem where my DVDs - just standard netflix DVDs mostly - will stop playing about halfway through. At first I thought it was a problem with the disks, but it has happened far too often now, and I tested one of the disk and it played fine in Windows - though I had to sit through 20 minutes of unskippable ads to check.
I get exactly the same problem regardless of player; I usually use VLC, but VLC, MPlayer, and at least one other all stop in exactly the same place. There's no buffering or freezing or anything, it just stops as if it were the end of the disk, and it always stops at the same time on a disk (not always at the same time on different disks). I can't skip past that point, it's like there is nothing past that point.

Jun 12, 2010I'm new to posting around here, but have used this forum for years and always have found a solution via search, but this time I couldn't find anyone with quite the same problem.
I've been using 8.04 on an old laptop for quite a while and have been able to watch encrypted DVDs, as I have installed all the proper drivers.
But suddenly, every time I insert an encrypted DVD, it will mount and I can see the name of it and browse the files, but neither MPlayer nor VLC will play it.
I know the drive works, because if I boot into XP I can watch them there.
I already tried reinstalling the drivers and am out of ideas.

Nov 3, 2010It has been such time that I have been making back-up copies of my DVDs using dvdrip. Lately I tried to back-up DVD of Iron Man2 and was surprised to see so many titles under Table of Contents. 93 titles of which re all running 2 hours plus. And so I ripped the recommended one which is the longest running title. Surprisingly, the output is all screwed up. Meaning scene one is at the end along with some scenes from the middle of the film and so on. Is there any way to correctly choose which of the 93 titles is the right one please? Obviously, I can't go through the motions of doing it one by one. Or would it be more practical to just copy the whole DVD image and burn in another DVD instead of making a HD back-up?

Ubuntu :: DVDs Still Not Playing?
Feb 18, 2011I have still not succeeded in getting my Region 2 DVDs to play in Ubuntu 10.04. I used something called Regionset to reset the player from zero to 2 for playback in the UK but although it is now set to Region 2 it will only play Region 0 DVDs. I have tried all sorts of tricks with codecs and installing VLC and (of course) Ubuntu Restricted Extras but no joy.

Apr 6, 2011Difficult to describe, but basically the desktop background image has a slightly smaller copy of itself (roughly 70% of the original) overlayed in the upper-left hand corner, like a picture-in-picture type of effect. This occurs on both the login screen,d the wallpaper I have set under my account. It seems to be isolated to ONLY the wallpaper, and not affecting any icons or functionality of anything else that I've noticed. Logging out and rebooting have no effect on the issue.

I am looking at getting a laptop that can run games and I would go with a desktop but I am to mobile to really enjoy a desktop.What I noticed is most laptops I look at that hit what I want has a bluray drive which I know there is no current video support for it but will the disc drive still work for Ubuntu 10.04 for DVD' and Cd's even though it is bluray?

Aug 9, 2011Normally I find everything I need either in the documentation or forum, but it's been months, and this time I'm stumped. I'm posting the results of my latest tests, so I'm really sorry about the length of this post.
I can't play DVDs unless they've been burned by myself or a friend. I had no problems until around the beginning of April. I was running 11.2 on both my laptop and desktop. I think an update changed something. This was before 11.2 was officially retired a week or so later. I wanted to upgrade to 11.4 anyway, so I began with my laptop. During installation I wiped everything from my hard disk by creating new partitions and formatting them. After installation I installed the multimedia packages using one-click (opensuse-guide.org, not opensuse-community.org, although I did read what they said). I know one-click is not ideal, but I was curious. The result was that I still couldn't play DVDs.
I did a fresh installation, just to be on the safe side. This time I installed the packages according to Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide by caf4926. But I still couldn't play DVDs, so I went through the thread Check your multimedia problem in ten steps. Then I ran mmcheck (v2.35). I tried a few times, experimented, and in the end did another fresh install.
In the meantime, on my desktop, which still has 11.2 on it, I found the file which had been changed and changed it back, so I could play DVDs on it again. It was in /etc/udev/rules.d/, 70-persistent-cd.rules. This does not appear to be the problem in 11.4 on my laptop.
I have again installed the packages according to the multimedia installation guide, and done the ten-step check and run mmcheck and these are the results as they stand:
I couldn't find a package called mplayerplug-in. I used zypper to look for it.
I tried installing the totem packages in a previous installation, but they didn't make a difference, so I left them out this time.
I deinstalled my jdk, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference, except that I get an error notification everytime I want to use LibreOffice. And I need it, so I'm putting it back soon.
So, these are my packages:
And this is what happens when I try to play a DVD using Kaffeine (since I don't an error message except from Kaffeine, and I've forgotten where my logs are):
And then comes Read error from: Error reading from DVD over the GUI.
And nothing else happens... I get no feedback from smplayer whatsoever. It opens, trys to read the DVD, and sits there. Even on the console.

Basically the problem is, I can't play store bought DVDs, but I can play my copies of them.
When using MDPlayer that I added to Ubuntu, I can play the copies of my store bought DVDs, but not the originals. However, when using Ubuntu 9.10's movie player, it wont do anything and I'll have to do a force quit to close it.
I learned that this may because there is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution, as I'm sure you already knew.
...Yet, Most people have worked around these issues.

Running the Terminal, I added the bash command that adds Medibuntu's repositiry to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu's GPG key to the keyring.
(The sudo wget - etc etc etc --quiet update)
Then I jumped down to the... "This command should be run in the Terminal, after adding the repository:" ...And did that. (sudo sed -e 's/ etc etc etc /medibuntu.list)

VLC plays it back as distorted noise.I know this BS is because of the files 'Digital Restrictions Management'. Jan 18, 2010I've trolled the forums for about 30 mins or so already looking this up, but can't seem to find any solutions. Most threads seem to end with either a "report to launchpad" or they just end without resolution. So in case I've missed a solved thread:
Plugging my Kodak C503 in gives inability to mount due to lock issues, the infamous -60 lockout. However, I get TWO icons in metacity, neither are mounted/will mount. Turning the cam off removes both, and I can't get down to only one. Not sure if this is because it's reading the camera's internal memory + my SD card.
So, I pulled the SD card out, and jacked it into my card reader in my lappy. no dice. In fact, none of my SD cards work; leading me to believe I need to find drivers for it.
Notes: (1)It's a Pavillion ZD7000 (2)nothing pops up in fdisk (3)I really don't want to load up windows
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Make Digital Camo On Gimp?
Mar 23, 2010I've been searching for a while now and come up empty handed, but after some research on the history of digital camouflage and how it was created I was able to devise a simple method for creating at least a close approximation of the real thing.
Step 1: start with a picture of the "texture" you intend to use. it doesn't matter if it's a low resolution picture because you are going to intentionally pixelate it
Step 2: use the noise plugin "pick" and create some static in the picture. I've found that you can just set everything to maximum and apply the pick with good results.
Step 3: (optional) if you want this to be a repeating pattern, at this time apply the "make seamless" tool under Map plugins.
Step 4: Apply a pixel blur. dial it in just to where you start to see hard pixel edges forming. In most digital camo patterns, the pixels are taller than they are wide, about a 3:2 ratio
Step 5: Choose the number of colors you want in your camo pattern. Virtually all digital patterns are either three or four colors, but never any more than that. Change the image mode from RGB to 4 color indexed. Then you can change it back to RGB if you wish to change the colors in your camo.
you can play with the settings on each step to dial in something that looks proper. The proper scale for your camo is roughly 1/4" tall pixels. Try playing with different textures, or even non digital camo prints. In about two minutes we've just created both a woodland and a desert digital print that is close enough to pass for MARPAT using free software.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Pulseaudio Digital Out Has Just Stopped Working
Oct 10, 2010For no conceivable reason, pulseaudio will no longer output via the spdif connection on my onboard sound card.Up until now, various applications could output digitally (mostly using via the alsa plugin) fine. DVD playback would passthrough DD/dts bitstreams if the application was set to communicate with alsa directly. The sound profile in Ubuntu's audio applet would have to be set to Analog Stereo Output for this to work, no idea why.
Now, all the works is digital passthrough via alsa (i.e DVDs). So definitely not a hardware issue. Regular audio either via the alsa plugin or using pulse directly does not work so no music/system sounds/flash etc. All sliders are unmuted (see pics linked below) and the volume meters all show movement with sound activity. Changing the Profile setting does nothing, I thought maybe it had been fixed so digital actually meant digital.This has happened before (sometimes triggered by DVD playback and DD passthrough) but usually fiddling with the mute toggles fixed it.Possibly this has been caused by a recent update.
