Fedora :: Package Manager Hanging At The Line "Loaded Plugins: Refresh-packagekit"

Nov 13, 2009

From some time now whenever i start the Package Manager it hangs at the line "Loaded Plugins: refresh-packagekit" I don't know the reason as it doesn't throw up any errors. Even if i reset the terminal. nothing changes. if i force quit then when i start package manager again (in the same boot) it stops and gives the message that other application has yum lock as i cannot auto install any software

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Use Yast Package Manager Because It Seems To Crash During Repositories Refresh

Jan 12, 2010

I am meeting some problems on my opensuse 11.2 system in the last week, I see an higher load on CPU and the system seems to swap a lot of time. Checking on dmesg I found that at boot time I have a lot of errors: I paste a little part of the full log at the end of this post

If I am not wrong I have found and installed an official opensuse 11.2 kernel update through zypper some days ago Moreover, actually I am not able to use yast package manager because it seems to crash during repositories refresh (or just after it)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: System Resources - Ripperx Plugins Are Loaded At Boot

Apr 29, 2010

I have installed RipperX and the Lame MP3 encoder, as well as Oggenc. I noticed that Ripperx plugins are loaded at boot. The thing which concerns me is that there are multiple instances of a plugin witht the same name showing in system monitor( or ps command). There are about 15 processes alone with the name "plugin-Lame."

Here's the output of ~$ ps x

Code:

Are these actually different? Or do I really have redundant instances running? I'm concerned because I have an old system with limited RAM, and all the plugins together make an impact. If they are all neccessary and needed for RipperX, is there a way to have them load up when RipperX is started, rather than at boot-time?

OpenSUSE :: Stop Packagekit Update Applet Using Command Line?

Jun 22, 2011

I have a few PCs that are used by average joe's and whenever updates are available the update applet apears indicating there are updates. I usually update all these machines at the same time using zypper so in order to remove additional confusion how can I disable this? I've read in the forum how to stop it from starting up by going to Control Center | Startup Applications and unchecking Packagekit Update Applet. Is there a way to do this using the command line? I'm sure there is, after all this is Linux, I just need to know how. Reason being is I'll be ssh'ing into these machines to disable the update applet and don't want to touch all the machines and click my way to stop it at startup. Figure there has to be an easier way

Slackware :: Start Compiz And Plugins From Command Line

May 20, 2010

I've been searching for hours now on how to start compiz from command line and configure the plugins. I just want to use the compiz core package in Slackware (no add-ons for now). I've figured out starting compiz

Code:
compiz --replace
and the windows decorator

Code:
gtk-window-decorator --replace
kde-window-decorator --replace
for gtk based or kde respectively. I know how to start the plugins (by putting their names in the compiz command), but not what all of their command line names are.

What I'm looking for is all the console names of the base plugins (and eventually the others too), the order they need to be started in (if any), how to automatically start compiz when X starts, and how to change plugin settings (all without ccsm). How to do the above stuff without the use of a graphical tool.

Debian :: Upstream Firefox4 Package In /home/ Can't Find Plugins

May 5, 2011

I'm trying to use Debian Stable with some newer upstream packages. I've got the upstream Firefox tarball unbacked in /home/firefox/. The problem is that it can't find any plugins, flash or anything else. It's the 64 bit binary but still needed some 32 bit libraries to run. Does it need 32 bit plugins?

Iceweasel is uninstalled and and I deleted it's ./mozilla/ directory. I tried creating a /home/.mozilla/plugins/ directory and symlinking plugins into that and pretty much any other conceivable path where it could be looking for them.

I run upstream firefox from /home/ in the past and had no problems.

Fedora :: Suggestion For GUI Package Manager

Nov 19, 2009

I'm new to Fedora, having used mainly Ubuntu in the past. My biggest (and pretty much only big) problem so far is that I can't find a good enough gui frontend for yum. I really hate packagekit because it doesn't really give any info; it simply says "downloading" and "installing packages" without saying what exactly it's downloading, where from, what's the speed (how will I know if my connection's stalling?), how big the file is etc.

I like yumex, but every time I open it I have to wait 3+ minutes for it to reload the repositories. And if I don't reload them then I can't install anything. Also, when I'm done installing it has to reload the repositories once more if I want to keep using it.
Then I also tried synaptic, which (of course) works as well as I'm used to, but some important repositories for Fedora (like RPMfusion) aren't accessible through APT.

Another problem with any non-packagekit managers I tried was also that they don't communicate with the system's notifier, so after installing/updating a package through anything else than packagekit that needs me to restart the computer or a program I get no notice of it. Is there a package manager that would work the way I want it to, or should I just make a choice between using console, using the overly simplistic (in nice terms) packagekit and waiting several minutes before making changes to the installed packages? I'd be glad for any input here.

Fedora :: Alternate RPM GUI Package Manager To GPK?

Feb 13, 2010

I am relatively new convert from ubuntu/debian here and while I like yum's interface in the terminal better than aptitude, I regularly find myself frustrated with gpk-application. When I try using it to search for packages, as often as not it will not return any results--even though I know it should return some. Furthermore, there is no ability to define what fields you are search (package name, description, etc.) Another thing that really bothers me is how when it is downloading/installing packages, all you get is the little bar and a message saying "resolving dependencies", or "downloading", or "installing" etc.

With no option for more details (or preferably a terminal display). While I usually use the terminal by default for package manager, I had got used to using synaptic package manager in ubuntu and debian for searching for packages, when I wasn't exactly certain what the name was of the package I needed. I know I can do this from the terminal, or even on the internet, but I found synaptic was great for quick investigations. Is there any rpm package manager closer to synaptic in terms of functionality? or am I stuck with gpk?

2. How does support for patented codecs work?
3. Is this a rolling release system?

Fedora :: 15 LXDE - Unable To Get Package Manager?

May 26, 2011

I tried installing Fedora 15 Gnome on my 8 year old laptop, but it didn't work so well since Gnome 3 couldn't start due to my graphics adapter (although it worked fine in Fedora 14), so I tried installing Fedora 15 LXDE and had much better results. Any way, after running yum update, I tried to install Google Chrome since I prefer it over FireFox, but I noticed that I didn't have the opton to automatically install it with a package manager, only download it. Once downloaded, I tried to open it via the GUI and it brought up a screen asking me what application I wanted to use to open the rpm. It didn't even know how to install a rpm!! I then tried to install it via the command line, but it failed because the package was dependent on others. After looking around in the Administration menu, there does not seem to be any package manager installed. How can this be? I've used many different versions of Linux before, but none that didn't have a package manager or didn't know how to install it's own native binaries. I don't get it.

Fedora Installation :: No Package Manager In GNOME After Upgrade?

Jun 9, 2010

I have upgraded my Laptop from Fedora12 to Fedora 13 via DVD image (x64 version). After the upgrade, I tried to update via YUM every package that still needed upgrade (especially nvidia drivers), and I got

[Errno 14] Could not open/read file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-rpmfusion-nonfree-fedora-13-x86_64

So, I tried to delete and reimport the rpmfusion repos, but when I go to this page:

[URL]

and try to install the RPMs, it only allows me to open them with Archive Manager!
So I looked into GNOME menus and... damn, apparently I can't find Package manager anymore!
Where did it go? and more importantly, why can't I install RPMs anymore? Can anyone enlight me on what went wrong?

Being the fool that I am, I forgot the good old terminal. I have still to nail down in my brain that going by terminal always works better than GUI. Using RPM -Uvh I managed to re-import all repos whose GPG key wasn't signed, and so I finally can upgrade my packages.

Package Manager is missing from GNOME. I have a couple of packages that I installed outside from repositories (they are SongBird and PersonalBrain), and I want to upgrade one (SongBird) and delete the other (PersonalBrain) but since I am in no way an expert when it comes to use the Terminal, I don't know how to uninstall them both (and then reinstall an upgraded version of SongBird).
