i used my windows box to connect to ftp(fed box) and i keep getting an error saying "The requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found." does anyone know why i cant connect?
I edited the passwd file to modify the default shell for root from bash to tcshnow when I try to login to root it gives me the following error:"su: /bin/tcsh : No such file or directory"
we know that /etc/passwd - is a replica of /etc/passwd file and acts as a backup in any damage done to /etc/passwd file..i have observed a strange thing in RHEL 5.4....for example... if /etc/passwd has 100 accounts.. then /etc/passwd - is having only 99 accounts....when i add 101 useraccount with "useradd" then /etc/passwd has 101 accounts and /etc/passwd is having the 100th account of /etc/passwd - ..when i delete /etc/passwd and recover it with /etc/passwd - from runlevel 1 the lastly created user is not having his account after recovery.. what is the solution? this is same case even with /etc/shadow and /etc/shadow -
How does one get the wifi to auto connect upon start up, instead of having to manually select it every time i log on? I think the following script is what i need but im not sure where i would even need to install it.Automatic WLAN Picker Script
I use Network Manager applet to connect to my lan (I don't use dhcp however). The problem is that my machine runs several servers (http, ftp, smb, ...) and should be ALWAYS accessible whenever the computer power is ON, even if there is no user logged. Another problem is that the connection is dropped if you logout and then login with a different user who doesn't know wireless settings (eg my mother, sister, brohter...)
So, is there a way to get a wireless connection at boot time? I mean, using Network Manager. Previously I used wicd or cli tools (iwconfig and wpa_supplicant) but then I switched to NM cause it was more ubuntuish. I'd still prefer not to use wicd, but NM really seems not good software to me
if some options are not really described but i use the german Version. I am new with Ubuntu and Network Manager. Everything ist working fine, but when i start my Netbook i always have to switch on my wifi by my self. Now my question: is there any way to give nm-applet the information with some start option to start with wifi swiched on? Inside the connection Options i already switched on "connect automatically" and "all users can use this connection" also i found the option inside /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-setings.conf
I have tried installing the original CD os 8.04 (Dell system restore) again hoping that everything was on there in order to get me connected to wifi again. Connecting to wifi seems to be the main issue that people have trouble with.I feel that I have 3 options now:
1. Sell the laptop (it is a month old!) 2. Pay for support 3. Put windows on it
I have recently installed 11.04 on my ASUS EEEPC 900 and am having problems with getting the wifi enabled and able to pick up any signal. It has a broadcom device in there and although I have downloaded the patch that should be able to fix it Im unable to install it.
1. RHEL5 (2.6.18-128.el5) running fine on VMware(6.5v) 2. RHEL5 (same version of ker) running on Laptop (DELL Latitude D710)
there is a wireless modem which running at home with that i was being able to access the internet from VMware image running with RHEL5. BUT internet does not work from the laptop. Network manager are running on both VMware image and Laptop.. What is the steps i need to follow to get WiFi Enabled so that it should pick the ipaddress from Wireless Modem to get internet access to my laptop.
I switched to the b43xx (lp-phy) driver, as opposed to the broadcom STA driver which I previously had. I have dell 8312b/g lp-phy(mini) wireless card.
I have the wireless detection, but when I attempt to connect to Fios WiFi it continuously asks for my WEP (I have the correct WEP and I have typed it in correctly) and fails to connect.
I've read about the driver and firmware on linuxwireless and kernel.wireless. org.

As I reported in this bug:[URL].. root is not able to start an openvpn-connection via the "nmcli"-command to control NetworkManager, whereas my user does not run in any problems with this command. My error output when starting as root is as follows:
Code: # nmcli con up id "my-openvpn" Active connection state: unknown Active connection path: /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/5 state: VPN connecting (need authentication) (2) Error: Connection activation failed: no valid VPN secrets.
Does anybody know what to do about this strange behaviour? The vpn-secret seems to be stored in the gnome-keyring and in the /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/my-openvpn simultaneously. But root cannot access any of these. Why this is important? I'm trying to set up a dispatcher-script to automatically start openvpn on eth-connection. but this does throw the exact error from above (no valid vpn secrets..).
I own an Acer Aspire 5552g. I have installed 2 systems on it: Windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10. Everything works fine except wifi. There is a lot of threads connected to this topic, but none has solved my problem yet. The problem occurs when I hibernate Windows and then load ubuntu - I get unable to turn wifi on. As rfkill says - it is hard blocked. It wouldn't be a problem if i had a hard switch for wifi. but I only have fn+F3 for that, which somehow fails to work in my situation.
Code:
igor@igor-Aspire-5552G:~$ rfkill list 1: phy1: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes
If I reboot Windows and then start ubuntu - everything's fine and working. fn+F3 turns wifi on and off as expected. I will provide some more info: when wifi's working:
Code:
igor@igor-Aspire-5552G:/sys/class/rfkill/rfkill1$ cat state
1 when it doesn't:
Code:
igor@igor-Aspire-5552G:/sys/class/rfkill/rfkill1$ cat state
I have a Dell Mini 10v with a fresh install of latest Ubuntu Netbook Edition. I have enabled proprietary drivers in order to get the WiFi card to work and managed to connect at home, starbucks etc. Good stuff.
For some reason I can detect but not connect to the WiFi at work - I get prompted for the pword and after entering it the WiFi indicater will pulse for a while only to return to the pword prompt. yes, I have the right pword and can connect my iPhone and other laptops. I am really puzzled by this and really need to get on the WiFi at work - wired connection works.
my colleague has the same dell model with windows 7 installed and is able to connect fine - I really don't want that @@@@ installed just to get WiFi. I know password entry error is the obvious solution but I connect new windows devices to it routinely and had other people try too.
I have having trouble getting my broadcom wifi card working, it is a BCM43225 802.11b/g/n. I did mange to get it to work but after reseting Fedora 15 would not boot. How to get the WiFi card working that would be awesome.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix on a Toshiba Netbook NB300. After performing an upgrade I find myself unable to connect to my wirless network and have lost the wifi icon in the task bar. Ethernet connectivity is however working.
iwconfig shows: wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off ifconfig shows

I need to take to bring back wireless connectivity to my netbook and restore the wifi icon to the task bar.
I have installed Ubuntu for netbooks on my four year old laptop and of course the wifi card is unable to search for wireless networks when I'm booted into Ubuntu. I do have the driver software on a recovery disk. Would installing it in Ubuntu fix my problems?
I'm running a small network of 20 PC's (slackware), I had previously used NIS and can't really be bothered with ldap it's a bit of hassle. I do not need a centralised database just a login auth system. On the server I make a folder called /sec and symlink passwd, group and shadow into it.I export this via nfs.On the workstation I create a folder /sec, move the passwd, group and shadow file into it and then symlink them back into the /etc folder. On bootup, the rc.local mounts server /sec over the top of workstation /sec. If it fails it falls back.I wasn't sure if I could just mount /sec on the workstation and then temporarily symlink group, passwd, shadow over the top of the /etc/shadow etc
I have installed moblock, moblock-control and mobloquer from the AUR, however I am unable to start moblock. Mobloquer launches fine, and will update the blocklists fine. However, upon clicking "start" I receive the following;
Problematic Deamon status: 1 Moblock is not running* what do i do??? please help me i have tryed loging in as root and i maked it for compleat removal? then i reinstalled it but it still gives me the same error it was working until i changed my MAC on wlan0 when i go to MoBlock status: this is what it says

I have Centos 5 installed on a PC in the local network. I have installed the RPM dhcpv6-client-1.0.10-16.el5.i386.rpm on this PC to configure it as DHCP V6 client. The RPM was installed successfully, and I have done modifications to the following files:
1. /etc/sysconfig/network, set the networking to yes. 2. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 set the BOOTPROTO=DHCP.
Now the problem is when I start the client on this pc as dhclient, it throws the following errors, and logs out after some time. All the network configurations were lost and the PC gets disconnected from the network.
[root@ServerB]# dhclient Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.0.5-RedHat Copyright 2004-2006 Internet Systems Consortium. All rights reserved. For info, please visit http://www.isc.org/sw/dhcp/
hi everybody i am using red hat linux 5.0 & i unable to start the network configuration form the system->admnistrator->netowrk actually by running system-config-network cmd i am able to edit only gateway but not the primary dns
i also tried from the /etc/resolv.conf. by editing the resolv.conf & after restarting the netowork the resolv.conf remove the chages & it become as like previous. actually there is some problems with the starting services form the panel->system->administration->serversettings->services some of the services are stopped can anybody tell me which are that services for system-config-network
I am trying to attach my server to 2 diferent networks, with fixed ip addresses, eth0 = 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0 with gateway 192.168.0.1. This is currently working, and I can ssh o the machine on this address
eth1 = 192.168.150.5 255.255.255.0 with gateway 192.168.150.1
When I try and start eth1 with ifconfig eth1 up, I get the error message "eth1: unknown interface: no such device"
I have configured eth1 using system-config-network-tui and /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth1 looks correct
On startup of my pc (ubuntu 10.04 server x64), samba bind itself only to loopback network interface, as i can see when i do netstat -an , preventing me to enter in my shares from a remote pc.
Here is my configuration regarding samba network:
Code: interfaces = 127.0.0.0/8 192.168.1.0/24 bind interfaces only = yes and my /etc/network/interface Code: # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback code....
Any idea fo speed up my bridge configuration or to force samba to wait unitl the bridge is ready?
