Networking :: Stuck With Ssh Tunneling Because The Default Method For Tunneling Requires Root Access While WinSCP

Mar 28, 2010

I have a local computer (local), and remote computer (remote) behind of remote server (server). Also, I have user access to all of these 3 machines. Now, I want mount some directory, located at remote, to my local mount-point via sshfs. How should I setup my local sshfs and what should be done on server to make this mounting?

I'm stuck with ssh tunneling because the default method for tunneling requires root access while WinSCP somehow could do this with only user access (the tunnel server could be configured there in 'tunnel' panel).

May 7, 2011

I am trying to use the ssh reverse tunneling through the command

Code:
ssh -l login -p port <ip address> -R <remote port>:<local Ip>:<local port>

In order to enable some one in the remote host to connect my machine. through the command

Code:
ssh 127.0.0.1:<remote port>

However when I try to execute the first ssh command above I got the warnning

Code:
Warinning: remote port forwarding failed for listen port <remote port>

The problem always happens when the remote host I have tried to connect is my Fedora 14 machine. I can do that when using an Ubuntu as the remote host.

Slackware :: How To Save Needed Modules Config To Create .config?

Apr 9, 2011

I am running a server with a GRSecurity patched Kernel 2.6.32.36. I've tried to optimize the kernel as much as I can and know it (removing options, not needed drivers and so on) and compiled the modules into the kernel (no loadable modules anymore). I've started with Slackware 13.0 and the default config for 2.6.29.6-huge. Still I am not sure what to remove/optimize further now.

My question: Is there a way to boot with a kernel with loadable modules, check which modules are really needed for this hardware, (do something like lsmod) and save the running configuration modules for a next kernel compile to be the default .config instead of writing them down by hand and search for the appropriate names in .config or during menuconfig? (Note: zcat /proc/config.gz > .config is NOT the way I want, as it gives me just the current kernel config)

Feb 27, 2011

I am trying to setup a version of OzymanDNS but am not quite sure I am understanding part of the instructions found here.My domain/website is hosted with a web hosting company, using their name servers. I have added a sub domain [URL], using an A record to send any requests for [URL] to my home IP address, where I have a server running. Do I need to also add the code below to my server at home which has BIND installed or are the instructions expecting that I have full control of the main name server already?

Ubuntu Networking :: Tunneling Through School AP

Mar 14, 2011

I am trying to tunnel through my college's free AP so I can get access to protocols outside of http and https. The school has an in-browser DNS redirect until you log in.The output of "cat /proc/version" on the server OS is "Linux version 2.6.35-27-generic (buildd@palmer) (gcc version 4.4.5 (Ubuntu/Linar o 4.4.4-14ubuntu5) ) #48-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 22 20:25:29 UTC 2011" The client OS is Windows 7. What I have done so far is use Proxy Cap to redirect applications to a Putty tunnel connected to the server. Eventually I want to tunnel that SSH connection through my school's firewall, so that I can keep encryption and have a reasonable amount of ease with setup.

I am not particularly educated on the inner workings of the DNS redirecting so I was not sure what to search for. My attempts to connect Firefox over normal http proxies failed and since all ports are blocked besides http and https I didn't attempt any socks or SSH. I have also tried simply hosting the SSH server on http ports with little success. I hope that I can do this without having to purchase a domain, but that's starting to seem like that won't be the case.

Ubuntu Networking :: Ssh Tunneling To Virtual Machine?

Mar 6, 2011

I am a linux beginner and dont know that much about networks! I have access to a linux VM. The machine is remote and i access via putty. If i can access this machine via SSH and putty, is there any reason why i should not be able to use ssh tunnelling to connect to a vnc server?

I don't know the details of the server and what firewall is set up but i believe that tunnelling uses port forwarding over the ssh connection that is already set up. Where does the port forwarding actually occur? At the actual linux VM or on the router the VM is connected to?

Networking :: Limiting Sshfs Access To Specific Directory / Tunneling Nfs Over Ssh

Jan 22, 2010

I have a server with a /data/ directory, everything in the /data/ folder has "-rwxrw-rw- 1 root root" permissions.all works fine, multiple users are mounting this over a lan and everyone is able to modify files. However I would like to be able to access the /data/music/ directory from the internet.

Is it possible to configure sshfs to only accept logins from a user restricted to reading the /data/music directory, or would it be possible to tunnel nfs over ssh in such a way that everyone on the lan 192.168.0.xxx has unrestricted access to the data directory, but something coming from outside only has read access to the music directory. Although is one were tunneling nfs over ssh, the nfs mount request would appear to come from the server itself. The router is at 192.168.0.1 and the server is at 192.168.0.3.This Seems very much like what I want to do, however I'm having a bit of trouble getting this to work well with other users mounting with full rights over the lan too.

Fedora Networking :: Lost WPA Support After Updates

Mar 5, 2011

Running FC14 64 bit with KDE. I have an atheros wireless card that was working fine for months. Just recently I downloaded and installed some updates I got automatically. After a reboot, I have suddenly lost my wireless connection. I am still able to connect to unsecured networks but my network uses WPA and the status of the connection always freezes on "Awaiting Authentication". When connecting, it pops up the secrets windows asking for the wpa key even though its already entered. I've reset my home router several times to test various configurations with no encryption and with WPA. My key is correct but it will not connect. I've researched this issue and found others to have the same problem though their fixes have not worked for me.

I've gone through a few things. Wireless radio button on, networking and wireless enabled in fedora. Card still shown in lspci and with iwconfig. Funny enough, there was no wireless card listed in Network Manager. So I added the connection again and set it to be controlled by network manager and start on boot. No difference.

I'm wondering exactly what was updated that caused this. I didn't pay attention to what updates they were. This update occurred 3/5/2011. I've tried booting to the two previous backup kernels, but that doesnt help either. Also ran dmesg | grep wlan0 to find that the device was not active or ready but I could still connect to unsecured networks. So I'm stumped and would really rather not reinstall. Besides, when I get the updates again, it will probably do the same thing. Is this a bug? I would post more information but I am not with my box at the moment.

Fedora Networking :: Does Network Manager In F15 Support Bridging

Aug 24, 2011

does Network Manager in Fedora 15 support bridging and if so, can you configure the bridge using your wireless interface? All of the information I've come across so far said that you can NOT create a bridge using a wireless interface, and that Network Manager doesn't support bridging, but this info was also from Fedora 12 and below, so I don't know if it's still relevant for Fedora 15. I would certainly hope that by now you can make a bridge from a wireless interface. Even the lowly VMware Player offers this option.

Fedora Networking :: Gnome 3 Network Proxy Support (15)?

Aug 31, 2011

My work uses a proxy server to mediate connections to the internet. However, changing the proxy settings in NetworkManager seems to have no effect. When I change the proxy settings in firefox from "use system proxy" to the actual proxy settings then it connects fine - but I would much rather be able to change the system proxy so that it works with all applications.

This is not confined to firefox - I have the same problem trying to use wget in gnome shell. However ftp works fine. I have just looked at the environment variables and it appears that NetworkManager is not setting the http_proxy variable (it is however setting ftp_proxy and https_proxy).

Networking :: Clarifiication Needed On Tcp_keepalive Messages?

Feb 23, 2011

Need some clarifications on TCP_keepalive . We are facing some issues on our Prod servers related to TCP functionality .The issue is like this for us. We have some machines at one end sending data in real time to another group of machines on the other end. Now due to some hardware issues on the other end , some of the machines becomes unresponsive/crashes. The client system which pumps data never came to know that the server went unresponsive . The connection remains in ESTABLISHED state and the client always tries to send data thinking that the connection is alive because of which we are seeing backlog on client sides.

Our understanding is like this on how TCP will handle the situation.

Q 1) Since the server went down , the client will try to the retransmit the data until it times out. What is the behavior of TCP after the timeout? Need clarification on the following things. a) Will the kernel will close the established connection after the timeout . Looks like no in our case as we
