Ubuntu Multimedia :: Lives Basics Including Slide Show And Still Pics?

I downloaded Lives. It looks neat. I cannot figure out how to get still images to form like a slide show. I was able to open a short movie I have uploaded onto my pc from my digital camera. Edit -> Multitrack mode seems to be where multiple movies can be placed. I do not seem to be able to place the still images on here. Maybe I can and they just don't show up on the timeline well.

General :: Focus On Command Line Machine System, Network Basics, And File Management Knowledge?

Feb 17, 2011

As a strategy for learning linux I have decided to adopt using a lean windows based approach. I want to focus on command line machine system, network basics, and file management knowledge. In other words find out how desktop manager does it's business, so I know how to master my machine, but by and large once I have made my choices, leave it alone to do just that.

I figure I should know how applications are internally configured etc., but I also figure an apps GUI and config choices should take care of installations, and program usage as in M$ windows. Surely taking care of an applications dependencies are the responsibility of the developer, are they not?

I am working my way through "Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition (Version 1.0.0)" right now for an overall viewpoint. Can anyone suggest a specific source for a point by point explanation of the command basis of a generalised "desktop management" application (KDE,LXDE)? Better yet would be if it had some parallel comparison of the varied approaches taken by different distributions of linux.

A secondary question, is that allowed? Up to a certain point in Ms windows, a thorough knowledge of DOS 6.xx would theoreticaly enable one to more or less duplicate the actions of the windows overlay. Is there a basic distribution (or subset in all of them maybe?) of linux that would be consistent with that paradigm? What would be analogous to DOS batch files, or GM-Basic? Oh! that's 3.I am certainly appreciating the depth of this forum, and the breadth of knowledge among you forumite's. Reading it is time well spent.

Fedora :: Eclipse Auto-Created Makefile Crashes Make

Dec 11, 2009

I'm just learning to use Eclipse (have previously been a vim+make developer). I created the standard Hello World project following the tutorial. The program compiles fine, but if I build it again without cleaning the project, make aborts with a glibc double free message (pasted below). The same thing happens if I run make in the Debug directory outside eclipse. I don't know make well enough to figure out what the problem is, and to my mind Eclipse shouldn't be generating a buggy makefile anyway.

I've attached a tarfile of the project directory. Download the file and the following sequence of commands should show you the problem:
tar xvzf HelloWorld.tar.gz && cd HelloWorld/Debug && make && make
Also, if you think it would be worthwhile submitting a bugreport to the Fedora Eclipse dev team, let me know where I can do that and I'll be happy to.

Ubuntu Security :: Basics Of Good Security Of Small Commercial Website?

Jan 17, 2011

1. I understand you can protect your files or directories in your website by setting file/directory permissions. The meaning of r w x is clear to me, but I'm not sure how to proceed... Starting with the index.html file, if I wanted to make it so that anyone in the world can read it but can't modify it, do I set its permissions to rwxr-xr-x? If I set it to rwxr--r--, would that mean the file couldn't be served? I mean, what does the x setting do on a .html file, how can a .html file be executable?

2. If file permissions work on the lines of owner-group-others, in the context of a website, who is 'group'? As far as I can tell, there's only the owner, which is me, and others, which is the world accessing the site. Am I correct in thinking that by default, say when creating a website on a shared hosting server, there is no group unless I specifically set one up?

3. My ISP allows the DynDNS.org service, meaning that I could serve a website from my home. It's too early to go that route just yet, but for future reference, I would like to ask about the server software called Hiawatha. It is said to be secure, but having read some evaluations of it, it doesn't seem to offer anything that couldn't be accomplished with Apache or Cherokee, it's just that its security settings are simpler and easier to configure. Am I right about this? Or does Hiawatha truly offer something that the other major server packages don't?

But no such things were happening on my Fedora 13 installation. So is there any way if I could get some realtime messages on Fedora 13 too like the one on Opensuse..?

Fedora Installation :: 11: Yum Hides Detailed Info

Jun 19, 2009

After the latest yum updating, yum hides detailed info about what it will do when it work. Previous version of yum will list the packages to be updated, installed, or deleted, and then ask you if it is what you want; this updated yum show nothing but "Are you sure?"( or something equivalent ): you don't know what it will do at all! Seems you have type "y" and see what it will download and install or uninstall. I don't know if new yum has changed its notice method or if I need add some plug-ins for it to show me those info as it did.

Fedora :: Mounting External Drives Using Lshw Info?

Sep 7, 2009

After a bit of searching, I haven't found a discussion on how to mount an external device using hardware attributes, though I am almost certain I have seen discussions on this in the past. The objective is to consistently mount an external USB drive at the same mount point regardless of the order in which a user attaches other external USB drives. For instance, if I run lshw, I can find harware properties of the device:

Code:

*-usb:1
description: Mass storage device
...
physical id: 6

[code]...

I'd like to identify this device by the serial number and mount to a pre-defined mount point (e.g. /mnt/extUSB). I can write a script involving lshw, dmesg, and mount but I vaguely recall a more clean/ preferred method.

Fedora Security :: Sshd Reverse The Tunnel Info?

Feb 18, 2011

I have an sshd server up and running (F13 64bit) I'd like to connect to a pc that's behind a firewall using ssh tunnelling, so I have something like

ssh -R 1234:127.0.0.1:22 myuser@mypc

then from mypc I can succesfully login to the remote pc. I have just une question. How can I list the ssh active connections and the forwarded ports ?

I've only got to

netstat -tunva

but this returns only (filtered)

tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:1234 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
tcp 0 0 ::ffff:172.16.0.XXX:22 ::ffff:172.16.1.XXX:60744 ESTABLISHED

Now I know that the first is the tunnel end but how can I connect the two lines if I don't know the port number (ie: someone else estabilieshes another tunnel)
