Fedora :: Mounted ISO Is Smaller Than Actual ISO?

Jul 5, 2011

I have an ISO of a game I own that shows up as 5gb. When I mount the ISO like this:

mount -t iso9660 -loop game.iso /mnt/loop
and go to /mnt/loop and execute
du -hs

it returns 2.5gb. Examination of all the files and directories in /mnt/loop does indeed add up to 2.5gb. So my question is what happened to the rest of it? Does the 5gb ISO contain a bunch of empty space? Should I try to burn it to a DVD and see what happens or should I burn it to a dual layer disc? I don't want to waste a dual layer disc if I don't have to.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 LTS Lucid - Root Is Getting Smaller And Smaller

Jan 22, 2011

I am using 10.04 LTS Lucid, and I notice the free space of root is getting smaller and smaller.

Five months ago, there was about 3.9GB free space of root, but now it is only 1.6GB. I always run sudo apt-get autoremove and sudo apt-get autoclean every time the update is finished, and also use Bleachbit to clean the system, but both are useless.

I never faced such problem with older versions of Ubuntu, is there any measure to fix it?

1. There is not any .deb in the /var/cache/apt/archives.
2. The total content of /var/log is only 167.6 MB, that won't be a problem.

Fedora :: See What Time The Actual Netbook Hibernated?

Mar 21, 2011

Code:
Fedora 14 xfce

I am looking for the log messages where I can find out what time my netbook hibernated?

I have checked in the /var/log. And all I could see was pm-suspend.log and pm-powersave.log.

Is there one which would tell me what time my computer hibernated?

The reason for this is when I go out I leave my netbook running on the battery. When the battery get to about 5% it will hibernate. I just what to see what time it did hibernate?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Find Actual Free Memory (RAM)?

May 10, 2011

When we have Oracle 10g in RedHat, the free memory goes down soon after bootup of the system and never increases. I learnt from various forums that Linux does cache the disk files for the better performance. And when any application requires memory they get the memory and the caching does not block any memory. We want to capture the free memory available for one the harware planning activity.

1) When we use vmstat command, it gives very less free memory. since it caches large size files, the free memory is very low.

2) We tried free command, but how do we know how much actual free memory is available. i.e. excluding the cache usage

Fedora Installation :: Actual Xfce Desktop Does Not Load

Mar 13, 2010

I am trying to split up partition between Windows and Linux...I'm trying out a few distros for my wife's laptop. I have Live CD's of the latest Fedora and Xubuntu. Started off with Xubuntu and the live CD detected everything very well so I installed it a split up the drive between it and vista using the install manager.

Windows is fine, but after logging into the default Kernel (generic etc..) it doesn't load the actual Xfce desktop, but just leaves me at the command promp ttyl I think. I tried to run "startxfce4" and got an error that no drivers were detected.

There's also a error when I first boot up that something couldn't be mounted. I'll re-post the error info in full when I get back, but where should I get started? How do I get into the actual desktop environment? I also can't get into root, as I don't know what the default password is, so I can't install anything.

Fedora Hardware :: MP3 Player Connected But Not Mounted

Feb 28, 2010

I bought a mp3 player about a month ago. It works fine with fedora 12 except for one problem as of late. I'm guessing some updates have upset some thing. I use to be able to mount and unmount the device with no trouble from the drop down Places menu. Now when I unmount it disappears from the list and I have to unplug it and plug it back in to see it again when it mounts. I was wondering is there a way to keep it in the places list when connected but not mounted. Or maybe a way to scan the usb port to find it again.

Fedora :: Mounted Partition Cannot Be Accessed By User?

Nov 19, 2010

I have a 500 G, where 80 are used for FC13. I added a new 80 G partiton, using Disk Utiliy, called it Backup, and I can access it when I am logged as root, When I log with any other user, even with all privileges (added almost in all groups), I get a dialog box requesting authentication.

I enter my user password, file manage just disappears as soon as dialog box disappears and I think it is a permission issue again.

In disk utility opposite to Device there is "dev/sdb", in mount point there is media/backup.

I opened fstab, I can not see an entry, here is the fstab :

Quote:

#
# /etc/fstab
# Created by anaconda on Wed Jun 16 00:58:19 2010
#
# Accessible filesystems, by reference, are maintained under '/dev/disk'

[Code]....

So what is the route to follow to follow to allow my user to access normally read and write to it without anu persmission issues
