Fedora Installation :: Actual Xfce Desktop Does Not Load

Mar 13, 2010

I am trying to split up partition between Windows and Linux...I'm trying out a few distros for my wife's laptop. I have Live CD's of the latest Fedora and Xubuntu. Started off with Xubuntu and the live CD detected everything very well so I installed it a split up the drive between it and vista using the install manager.

Windows is fine, but after logging into the default Kernel (generic etc..) it doesn't load the actual Xfce desktop, but just leaves me at the command promp ttyl I think. I tried to run "startxfce4" and got an error that no drivers were detected.

There's also a error when I first boot up that something couldn't be mounted. I'll re-post the error info in full when I get back, but where should I get started? How do I get into the actual desktop environment? I also can't get into root, as I don't know what the default password is, so I can't install anything.

Ubuntu :: XFCE Desktop To Load Up Automatically Without GDM

Jun 6, 2011

I'm making a Home Theatre OS, and I would like my XFCE ubuntu desktop to load up automatically without the use of GDM. This is because once remastered, the GDM cannot automatically log in until it's been set up to again. And the fact I removed all the GNOME icons which took up 50MB of space, so now the GDM interface is all glitchy xD

It basically involves removing GDM, logging in (the login and password are both 'media'), then having an automatic login command to run 'startx'. I've removed GDM on my test environment, and so far managed get in manually by logging in and typing startx. (On that note, do I even need a username and password? Can't I just use the password only for su?)

Fedora :: F12 XFCE No Desktop After Update?

Mar 6, 2010

last night I updated F12 XFCE on my Acer Aspire One 8Gb SSD, there were about 140+ issues to update.

after reboot the dialog to select a user and login appeared, continuing nothing shows up -- no menu, no taskbar, no volumes, just the beautiful F12 background.

pressing ALT - F2 I am able to start commands, eg Thunar shows up displaying all volumes, files and even NFS remote drives. my conclusion is that everything works except the desktop...

how I can start the XFCE desktop environment so I can use the GUI?

conky draws the root background for sudo transparency, not the desktop image, so solve by using real transparency, but this means any desktop icon blinks or just vanishes, what to do,looked around for a while. but no further along, anyone else had this problem, anyone else solved this problem?

Fedora :: Gnome-Do Error - Could Not Load Desktop Item - Libgnome-desktop-2.so.17

May 27, 2011

I'm running Fedora 15 with Gnome 3. I installed Gnome-Do using 'yum install gnome-do'. I opened it from the Terminal by typing 'gnome-do' but I keep getting an error message that says

Could not load desktop item: libgnome-desktop-2.so.17

Gnome-Do opens but it doesn't display any application I search for and when I try opening the Gnome-Do preferences, it quits.

I installed gnome-desktop-2.32.0-8.fc16.i686.rpm from here: [url] and then installed Gnome-Do. Everything works fine now.

Fedora :: F13 | XFCE | Internal Drives Not Showing On Desktop?

Oct 2, 2010

Running:Fedora 13kernel 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.i686desktop: xfce 4.6.2Problem: I have a 1TB drive (SATA) with 2 partitions. The partitions/volumes don't show on the desktop.The volume names are:MASSIVEBACKUP.

Facts:1. When I login using GNOME, both volumes (MASSIVE & BACKUP) are listed on my desktop2. My /etc/fstab has long since been edited to reflect these drives3. Using XFCE: Although the volumes don't show on the desktop, they are indeed mounted. I can see them when performing a "df -h" as well as when opening "File System" and drilling to /media - they are both there. I can also access the contents of both volumes within "File System" (using Thunar).4. Using XFCE: I can access both volumes via command line5. Using XFCE: External drives are not affected. I have one external USB drive that shows and when I plug my Android phone, it too shows on the desktop.

After some exploring, I installed the following:Oct 01 22:17:29 Installed: xfce4-mount-plugin-0.5.5-4.fc12.i686I then added "Mount Devices" to my panel, but...as you've probably figured out - they're already mounted.

Here is my /etc/fstab:

Fedora :: F14 XFCE Meltdown After Browsing Desktop Themes?

Nov 25, 2010

I installed Fedora 14 XFCE last weekend on my laptop..been putting in a little time here and there into customizing it, as I was trying to make it my new main OS, when suddenly today it suffered a complete meltdown that I have no idea where to start in trying to fix it. All I was doing was browsing through the desktop themes. I hit a certain theme, don't know which one, and the screen went blank. X then looked like it was trying to restart, then blank again. Then X looked like it was restarting, and blank..and repeat endlessly. I tried turning the laptop off and then turning it back on again.same result. Now I basically have a dead system, practically speaking, because I can't use it.

Putting aside the fact that it is immensely frustrating to have a Linux OS choke and die on me just from browsing through the preset desktop themes, does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this, aside from doing another fresh install? The only way I can think of to fix it would be to login into some kind of rescue mode (which I don't know how to do), get to a shell prompt, find the right config file (which I have no clue about, either), and fix the settings to where it will at least boot up, then I can select the default theme and never touch the themes again.

After that I suppose I should put in a bug report or something to Fedora about this -- that is, if I can reproduce it. Maybe that'd be at least some compensation, since I had high hopes for Fedora when I decided to try it, but this sort of crash-and-burn is just utterly disappointing.

Ubuntu :: Light Desktop - Install Desktop Command Only + Xfce?

Jul 19, 2010

Looking for a light desktop for a P3/512MB I installed xubuntu and I felt it slow. For a test, just tried installing lubuntu and it was so fast compared to xubuntu. The word here is I would like to move to xfce. Doing another test, I installed Debian Lenny + xfce and was way much faster than xubuntu.

My question: Can I install Ubuntu Desktop command only + xfce ? Is it going to be faster than xubuntu? Is there another recommendation for a debian based distro with xfce which runs faster than xubuntu?

is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

Fedora :: KDE Desktop Won't Load ?

Dec 13, 2009

I have gnome which is the DE I always use, but today I wanted to try KDE so I did a 'yum install @kde-desktop', the installation went ok, so I rebooted just in case and logged on a KDE session, the animation for loading was displayed and when it was finishing it went back to the login window instead of loading the desktop. If I try the KDE live CD, on other computers it shows the desktop right away but on mine it sends me to the login window and the same, looks like its loading but it sends me back.

Gnome keeps working ok, I can even launch all KDE apps installed like Dolphin and stuff but can't run a KDE session, does KDE 4.X have a special hardware requirements?.

Ubuntu Installation :: Desktop Won't Load & Terminal Is Illegible

May 9, 2011

After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04, my machine was freezing as the desktop was loading. The mouse pointer would move and some of the basic shortcut keys would work, but nothing on the screen was responsive.

I've got the NVIDIA 7300 LE video card, so i thought it was a conflict between that and UNITY (which I have ZERO interest in running), so I move over to a terminal login and this is what it looks like: [url] (click for pic - apparently, not everybody uses a 55" LCD as a monitor)

I can type like a regular terminal window, but obviously I can't read anything. I ran 'sudo apt-get remove unity' (and then 'sudo apt-get install gnome' when that didn't work) but the desktop still doesn't load and the terminal login tabs are still completely illegible.

Fedora :: Desktop Won't Fully Load After Install

When I load a fresh install of Fedora 14 on my system that the desktop doesn't load completely? It goes as far as giving me the desktop with a background, the icons and status bar do not appear. I am able to right click and open a konsle terminal but only when I am in KDE (failsafe)

What is weird is initially I had no problem. But when I switched to a different monitor the desktop would not load correctly. I have reinstalled the OS since then and still have the same issue.

The only way to use the desktop environment is to choose Ubuntu Classic (both with and without effects) and Ubuntu Safe Mode.

I do have nvidia drivers installed (173).

Ubuntu Installation :: HP Pavilion A6750t Desktop Won't Load After Restart System?

Sep 5, 2010

I tried to do a clean install of 10.04 on the above desktop. It was previously running 9.10 fine.

I booted with a 10.04 live CD, used Gparted to delete the previous partition that 9.10 was in. Installed 10.04 and chose the option to install in the largest continuous free disc space.

The installation seemed to go fine, but when I re-start the system, GRUB loads, I select Linux, then I get a flashing cursor and the monitor goes to sleep as it shows like it is getting no signal.

When I boot Vista on the same system it works fine.

From the sound of the hard drive, I am guessing that it is not loading the Ubuntu OS, I don't think this is a video driver problem.

Fedora Installation :: Installing XFCE DE Only From DVD

Nov 14, 2009

During my two previous installation, I almost never try to include or exclude package during the process. I want to know if I only want to install XFCE as my only DE, how can i do it during the installation progress (I Know i can install both, or even with KDE, but I also know that i can do it later should I change my mind)?

Second question is, if I install only XFCE, what will I miss ?(no, not the gnome feature, but maybe fedora distro(gnome) specific tool or something). Last word, no I'm not asking what feature of gnome is absent in xfce nor which DE is better, so don't start it.
