View 5 RepliesI use a Mac, but do all my development on a remote Linux machine which I access over SSH. Recently I've started using X forwarding to show some of the remote machine's graphical applications in windows on the Mac desktop. For the most part, this works really well - except that the applications look terrible: huge fonts, ugly widgets. Being the Mac-using perfectionist I am, I want to try and improve the look of these windows. Is there any way of using alternative widgets in an X-forwarded application? What would I need to install on the Mac, or on the remote machine?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am a newbie to Jaunty, so please forgive my descrip. terminology. I am experiencing a great amount of grief with my Jaunty install. I can no longer get a login screen in Jaunty. When I try to boot normally for this install I get an unclean shutdown screen & it goes into the "checking drive" mode. I uninstalled some applications such as has to do with touchpad, remote desktop, xorg-driver-fglrx etc. I reinstalled xorg-driver-fglrx, which I later found out that I do not need. I have an AMD64 HP system with ATI graphics onboard.
I need to find out how to load graphic user interface in Jaunty. Some of the necessary files have been completely removed by me & I need to reload the repositories and update my current install. The partition is encrypted but I have been able to login with the username & password for THIS encrypted install using the "repair broken system" part of the GRUB screen.
How do I go into the terminal and load repositories, and maybe the kernel so I can do an update/upgrade? I do not know if upgrade is part of what I need to do I wanna keep my Jaunty install so I can access 50G of data that is on this install. I have made no backup of this data!!!
I am able to login to my install using my username & password after I get to the "#" prompt, (option "fix broken system" in GRUB) so I know login can be done under username of install. I just need to know what to TYPE into the terminal to restore the necessary files in the right place to make it run. (Is it called terminal at that point?)
Does any body knows how to disable the root login to the GUI , like i am running my redhat server on runlevel 5 and i dont need tht root to get login to the GUI , i ma talking about redhat 5.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy desktop won't come up automatically now on a hard disk of mine (see below for the Ubuntu version history). It does boot up with Grub etc; then the Ubuntu load up bar thing with the timer spinning around [I hope you can understand this technical language!] goes through ok but then instead of getting the user interface with the little boxes to enter my login and password, the whole screen is in black (as if it's in Terminal mode). This black screen then asks me for my login and password: when I entered them, it said:
Starting up......loading, please wait
19 + 0 records in
19 + 0 records out
kinit: [followed by a load of technical stuff and a series of numbers]
kinit: trying to resume from /dev/disk/ by-uuid/9b [then a whole series of numbers]
kinit: no resume image, doing normal boot.

when I log in, I can move the mouse, but nothing else. The whole user interface is unresponsive and absolutely no keystroke works. It is probably not because of my hardware (hp 2710p) because logging in as root (with only slightly different Gnome configuration) does work well. I assume it is because of some error inside the Gconf. There is always an error when starting Gnome that an entry could not be read, including some bunches of ~30 question marks. If it is useful, I can give you the whole message literally.
I haven't changed data inside Gconf, but I did have it open when I was installing a program, and then the console did show the message with the question marks for the first time (while processing some "trigger" post-install). I think the program I was installing was drapes (for changing desktop wallpapers in Gnome). Strangely Gnome did startup correctly afterwards for a couple of times (always showing the above-mentioned error). I have no idea what change made it suddenly stop working yesterday.
The differences in Gnome configuration between the working root and the unresponsive user account are, as far as I can tell from memory: changed theme (elegant-brit), wallpaper, fonts, globalmenu in the panel, installed - added to panel - uninstalled drapes. The rest is the same for the root account. I can still log in to the shell as the normal user, but "startx" leads to the disabled graphical interface. As I said, the graphical interface works well when I use the root shell. I can't access the internet from the user shell unfortunately (if I need to, I will figure out how to set up wlan in the shell).
i usually use the connect to server GUI under places in previous versions of ubuntu. I am not able to see the application in ubuntu 11.04
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy camera takes (QuickTime) videos with abominable sound quality. I've got one that I'd like to improve the sound quality on. What I'd actually like to do is to separate out the audio track, run some filters over the audio track with Sox, and then splice it back in. I'm comfortable doing the sox-based improvements, but have no idea how to get the sound out of the video in the first place or to mix it back in. Perfectly comfortable with winding up with a non-Quicktime video as a result, though.

2) Press Alt+F2 and type oxygen-settings. Then go to "animations" tab and uncheck "enable animations". Also under "Window decorations" uncheck "enable animations".
3) System settings>Application appearance>Style>Fine tuning tab. Choose "Low display resolution and low CPU"
4) System settings>Desktop effects>Advanced tab choose fastest texture filter.
5) If your desktop effect are disabled on every reboot then you'll have to disable functionality checks. Go to System settings>Desktop effects>Advanced and check "disable functionality checks".
6) If you are running opensource drivers (ati or intel cards) you could try to improve your desktop effects with updating your drivers from xorg-edgers ppa. If updated drivers doesn't work better, you could safely downgrade your drivers to official ones with ppa-purge comand.
Code:
sudo apt-get install aptitude
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install ppa-purge
sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
Then reboot. If updated drivers do not work better you can downgrade them:

I built my own file server based on the Intel Atom 525 and Ubuntu 11.04 (amd64):http:[url]....It has 2 2TB Western Digital Green drives connected via SATA.Internal file transfers (disk-to-disk) using Nautilus zip along at 80 Mb/sec. Over SAMBA, however, I'm getting 35 Mb/sec. Other than creating the shares, I haven't modified smb.conf.have a gigabit network. I've run atop on the receiving computer and it isn't being taxed. At 35 Mb/sec the file server is also not being taxed.
Should I be focusing on testing the onboard NIC (RealTek 8111E) in the file server or looking at SAMBA?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am starting to get bottlenecks in the loading of webpages via squid. It is not the actual playback of video that has performance issues, this is very good. However, when a webpage is first requested, it is the initial response that takes more than a few seconds to load the page. I am wondering how to troubleshoot the issue as I don't know whether it is squid, the dns lookup, the number of users, RAM, or the bandwidth. Bandwidth seems to be the least likely since the server has a high bandwidth and video streaming appears to have no problems. I do not have caching turned on yet, which would certainly help because I do not want to cache flb, mp3, etc. files and the last time I turned on caching the performance was actually worse. The slow loading of pages has only just beguin to creep into the performance, it wasn't an issue before.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a pc where I run ubuntu 10.10 and on this pc i have installed vlc and on boot i start the vlc http interface. Therefor I created the file /etc/init.d/vlc. The file seems like this:

and I also updated rc.d. Vlc starts on boot as desired I also can send commands like in_play the file (a playlist) is loaded and reguarding the status.xml the file is played. But when no user is logged in I hear no sound. When I perform a login on the machine there is first still no sound but when I send e.g. the pl_next command or call in_play again then there is sound. Sadly the pc shouldn't be attached to a monitor and therefor I can't perform a login everytime so I need sound, when noone is logged in. Why is there no sound?
When ever I run Ubuntu 11.04 from the Live CD all works well and pretty. However, when ever I install it, my main monitor won't detect correctly and my second won't even display anything at all. Basically, Live CD runs perfect, Installation does not.
One other note: While running off the Live CD, there was no Unity. Running the actual installation, it is running Unity.. ?
I blew my UI (Unity) and dont know how to get it back. I wanted to set my Desktop cube using Compiz and selected OpenGL, but this blew my whole UI away and I cannot control anything anymore. From the empty screen I opened the application console using crtl + F2 There, a Login shows up but I do not know how to login (yeah LOLing here too). Username and my Password didnt make it. I could also not setup any new root password there. What data is needed here? Root, Username? Ubuntu 11.04 ubuntu ubuntu Login:
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Linux mail server (Fedora). This server was set up long before i joined this organization. Now I have these issues I would request assistance:
1. I am not able to access the Graphical User Interface(gui) on this machine. Startx does not work. I have also tried using combination keys alt+ctrl+f...keys but no progress. As a result am not bale to do some tasks.
2. The clamav that is on the machine has since become outdated. Efforts to update it to latest versions have failed. How do i get to update clamav and protect my system?
3. Because of not being able to access the gui as well as the inability to update clamav have led to my server apparently sending spam mail which in turn have led to my public ip being black listed in a number of sites. Now how can i secure this server so that it stops sending the spam mail and hence avoid future blacklisting?(NB am using postfix and the server sits behind a router which connects to the Internet)
4. I have observed that the server has some iptables rules set but everytime the server restarts the rules stop. I have to manually restart them again to run. How do I sort this?
Any program that has a web interface and has a features such as adding, deleting users as well as changing password. If none, does anyone knows a program that can interact with a script. A java page or apache+php perhaps? I can create script for those features but my problem is how can I integrate it to a GUI.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIn Windows, I was able to use IE as a user interface because I could code a WSF (Windows equivalent to shell script) to respond to events in IE.Now that I've moved to Linux/Firefox, I'd like to use Firefox in a similar way. Specifically, I would like to write a bash script to run lsdvd with XML output, use XSL to transform the XML for Firefox, then take an action (encode a selected track on the DVD) based on the user's selection. I would be happy if I could make Firefox write something somewhere that the script could read, but I suspect that security measures would prevent that.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAs a back story, my Thinkpad had two partitions on it; one with Windows Vista and one with Windows 7. But it can't find the boot files, and thus isn't starting up (I'm getting a remove media or other devices error). So I'm just trying to get it working by trying to download the Ubuntu ISO on another computer, burning it to a disk and then booting it up on my Thinkpad.
I downloaded the 32-bit ISO of Ubuntu. It's ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386, and it's 699MB, making me think that nothing is inherently wrong with the file I'm trying to burn. So I use InfraRecorder to burn it to an empty CD-R disk with 702MB of free space. (I tried using a DVD-R earlier, but switched over to CD-Rs after the DVD gave me the same problems that the CD-R is now giving me.) So I open up IR, find the ISO file, and burn it to the CD. Everything appears to work normally, and the disk pops out once it is done.
Now the Ubuntu website tells me that I can open up the CD-R file and check its contents, but I can't seem to do that, or at least on my computer. I put the disk back in (while running Vista on the computer I burned it on) and nothing happens, although I don't know if something is supposed to happen. I click on the DVD drive whilst in My Computer, and it pops out again (with the disk still in it) and tells me to insert a disk... whatever I think.
So maybe it's just not meant to work when already in Windows, but I put it into my Lenovo, boot from the CD/RW and am getting the same error. The specific error isn't really relevant, but rather the fact that it isn't even booting into Ubuntu. Clarifications: The integrity of the ISO file or the distribution are not the cause. I downloaded Linux Mint and encountered the same problem.
The computer burning the disk is not the problem. I used InfraRecorder and other burning software on two different computers, and both got to 100% and ejected the disk. The problem is that the disk is full, but not doing anything on either of the two computers I'm using to burn, and isn't booting up on my Thinkpad.
Some of you might have seen my thread about Gnome 3. My desktop and windows were a mess after Gnome 3, and I couldn't restore it back to Gnome 2 for some reason. I decided to check out Ubuntu Studio because I am a guitar player. I want to be able to record, but the desktop in ubuntu studio is stunning. It isn't graphically stunning, like ubuntu running Gnome 2 or 3, but it is simple. Everything is easy to get to and no nonsense. It is a joy to use.
If they improve the looks of the desktop and menus, I would be EXTREMELY happy. The look isn't that impressive, but the ease of use is great. One thing I noticed is that the average CPU usage went down when I switched to ubuntu studio. In regular ubuntu, my CPU would be using 15%-20% of its power when I wasn't running anything. In ubuntu studio, it is between 8%-13%.
I am pretty pleased with Ubuntu Studio. I am glad I made the switch. I just would like it to be a little more visually impressive.
I updated Lucid yesterday, and when I restarted the user interface was changed to a more simple feeling display. This makes me think I'm stuck in a "basic" mode or something. I attached a screen shot, but to give you an idea ill describe some issues. For one thing the minimize buttons are now on the right. The volume control, which used to appear on the top right of the screen, is gone and my multimedia volume control buttons on my Inspiron 1420 no longer work. Furthermore, the command terminal is now white and the keyboard shortcuts for copy and past don't work.
Immediately after updating I also got an error message at login (which also appears different and gives options on bottom of screen like gnome Failsafe) which said something like "gnome default power management installed incorrectly...". I followed the advice of a forum thread that involved the purge command and that seemed to remedy that message.
