i tried to install world of warcraft through wine and it worked! but when i go to run it, the window's invisible (i can hear the sound, the mouse cursor changes, but i can�t see the screen). one guy over on videos said to configure wine to run as a virtual desktop, but it didn�t seem to work.

I think that the drivers are working fine, as I can run all the OpenGL games without problems. I have Ubu 9.10 and Wine 1.2. Question: How could you possibly install World of Warcraft CD disc onto Ubuntu 10.10, I've tried installing Dragon Age Origins onto Ubuntu 10.10 but says that the CD was not an executable bit?
I've done some research & went into the settings of the disc & tried to allow as an executable bit, but failed to succeed! Sucks but that�s reality, so.. anyways if you have any solutions about this problem please don't hesitate to let me know
how to install Ubuntu. I have only ran it as a partition and am not sure the process i need to go through to install it on a newly built machine. My second question is that when i partitioned it ( was kinda giving it a test run to see if i could cope with the change from windows) I remember not being able to run world of warcraft. I couldn't get wine to run it. I want to run starcraft II and I'm not sure how thats going to go over. Is that going to give me a problem? I realize these should probably be separate threads but i figured these could be answered relatively easily.

All of these things got me where I am today. WoW will run in OpenGL mode for a couple seconds after loading my character and then wine crashes with this error from the Terminal code...
Just updated to Ubuntu 11.04 this morning, and was immediately overwhelmed. The new panel layout and sidebar thingy looks pretty sweet at first glance, but I can't find a durn thing. :s But to the point, went to run World of Warcraft after the update and the launcher starts, then after hitting play a fatal error pops up.

I'm trying to figure out what is the problem. I used Ubuntu 8.10 in the past and never encounter a problem like this. It keep freezing the computer 3 to 5 times a day. This is always what it ended up with every time it froze. I check the log and it usually on that message. and I switched back to the previous kernel and assumed it the newest kernel causing problem. I had this problem before in my Ubuntu 8.10, so i switched to the previous kernel and the problem is solved. So on my ubuntu 9.10, I switched to the previous kernel, it still have the same result. I'm running out of ideas. I been thinking about switching to 8.10. The reason why I like 9.10 because of ext4 support
I have a bit of a problem that I don't understand and would like some help please - I will try and explain the best way I can. I installed Ubuntu using the WUBI installer and so I can access my Windows partition in /host. Using Wine I can run World of Warcraft by going to /host/Program Files/World of Warcraft/WoW.exe But I would like to create a link on my desktop to that file so I do not have to keep going to that path everytime.
The Problem - when I click make link and drag it to my desktop I double click the file (expecting it to just act like a windows shorcut) but it doesn't - it creates some of the files that are in the world of warcraft folder on the desktop and then fails to open with message: Failed to open archive dataart etc...its like it is creating a copy of files on my desktop of what is already in the WoW folder.
I run openSUSE 11.2 (kernel 2.6.31.12) and I use Wine 1.1.38 to play World of Warcraft from the konsole terminal application. For the most part this works okay, but there is one small issue that continues to annoy me:
Look at your keyboard (assuming standard QWERTY no-name keyboard) - see the key just left of your Backspace key? That key is only partially working for me in WoW. I cannot bind it to any action bar button in-game, with or without addons enabled. For some reason the key works fine when entering text into the chat console though.
I have used xev to get a bit of data on the key itself - not that it is that informative to me though, but the absence of the issue when playing WoW through Windows would suggest that it is somehow endemic to my Linux configuration:

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 and as a newbie to linux based operating systems, has tried but without success of playing WoW with wine. I tried with making a link to ''wow.exe'' and right-click ''open with wine windows program loader'' but ended up with a blue screen and a black square as my pointer, i can heard the login music but no picture. When i play Music or Video i have no problems at all.
But.
Have World of Warcraft installed trough Wine and all is working perfect. The thing is that i hear a weird chirping sound when i log in the game (1 time) and then i hear a sort of ticking sound on the background and it stays there no matter if a disable music or not.
Have also tried all 3 settings in sound config (ingame) eg. System Default, Pulse Audio Software ((Null)) and ALSA Software on Default ((null)).
The weird ticking sound is staying.
Anyone knows a solution of have a hint where i must look to solve this ?
i'm being slightly sarcastic i think it's safe to say i'm doing something wrong but i'm just at a loss as to what. as it stands banshee - doesn't recognise ipod songbird - doesn't handle album art and overwrites ALL existing art floola - doesn't support new itunes database rhythmbox - doesn't handle album art hipo - doesn't find ipod gtkpod - doesn't find ipod yamipod - doesn't handle album art
so it's not entirely invisible, i will confess i've spent the past 2 hours trying to work out why banshee, hipo and gtkpod all don't see the ipod when songbird, rhythmbox and yamipod do. podsleuth tells me it can't find any ipods, even on a rescan - when i've got the ipod connected. if i select "properties" on the Ipod when it's connected, i get this ..[URL].. it's frustrating because it drives me back to windows every time so i can use sharepod again, and invariably start all over again re-doing all the album art - again.
i've got a backup of all my music that i took directly from the ipod - it's on a seperate hard drive, so i can only hope and pray that sharepod writes out the album art as well.
I am very new to the Linux/Ubuntu Platform (have used it now for 8 days), I am primarily a gamer when it comes to my computer. Because of this I have always been a windows user for compatibility reasons. A week ago my friend was telling me how awesome Ubuntu is and the background story behind it. Intrigued I tried it out and fell in love with it (good thing too because I accidentally killed my windows boot and all the files on that HD during installation). I am primarily a World of Warcraft gamer, and have gotten it to work through the great online community and guides out there using WINE. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been pulling my hair out trying to find out why the Wine System Tray suddenly started appearing in its own little window when running Netmeter, cluttering up the desktop. I searched the web in vain, back many tears, most people saying they couldn't understand it when it happened to them.
Then I realized that the last thing I did was to stop Cairo Dock (the novelty had worn off!) and to move the Gnome Panel to the BOTTOM of the screen in place of Cairo. I suspected this was making the Wine System tray homeless.
So I moved the Gnome panel back to the TOP, restarted Ubuntu, stopped and restarted Netmeter and the Netmeter icon appeared back in the panel where it belonged.
Would I be correct in thinking that Wine System Tray will only stay in the panel if the panel is at the top of the screen?
The icon for Torrent, when it's minimized to taskbar, becomes invisible. How do I let it appear?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI finally got around to installing Linux on my laptop the other day, and I'm trying to use Wine to run some windows apps. Problem is, my programs never appear. They DO start - I can see them in 'ps -e' as well as Gnome System Monitor. Yet the window never appears. It's not just one program either; first I tried running Steam from the terminal and I can tell that it successfully launches. The window just doesn't get drawn. All other windows become unfocused when it launches and I'm even able to type in my password to log in (I know this because after I hit enter the "Steam Login" entry disappears from the taskbar and the "Steam" entry appears in it's place) but no Steam related windows ever appear.
The second program I've been trying to emulate is EVE Online. Similar thing happens: The EVE splash screen DOES appear, along with it's entry in the taskbar, but when it closes, the EVE client never becomes visible - no taskbar entry this time either. Again, I can see it running in ps -e or System Monitor, and one of my CPUs cores becomes maxed out, so I know it's running. Also, I just noticed that I can right click Steam's invisible entry in the tray and bring up the context menu, but nothing more than that. I've heard of fonts being invisible/incorrect under Wine, but not the entire program! I've googled and tried running things in compatibility mode for various versions of windows, but have had no progress. What am I missing?

I have a problem running a game on a fresh Slackware64 install.

I've followed alien bobs instructions for a multilib environment from here:[url]
And then used sbopkg to download and compile wine version 1.2.2, which went through just fine.
After that I grabbed cabextract from sbopkg and ran this: wget [url] sh winetricks d3dx9 To get the DX9.
But, when I try to run the game, this is the error I get:

The game it self ran perfectly on the 32 bit version of Slackware, tested with 13.0. So now I think I'm missing some libs or something, but I have no clue which.
I'm running ubuntu 10.10 (with the macbunu theme if it matters). From there, I'm running an application on a solaris system and forwarding the X11 display back to my ubuntu/gnome display with the follow command "ssh -X <solaris-host>". Everything seems to display correctly so far except for what I would describe as the alert boxes. The problem is they are invisible. I know it's there because I have mouse pointer jumping turned on and the mouse jumps to the default button and if I click on it the alert box flashes and but disappears. The disappearing is normal due to the button press. So it appears the alert box is present but invisible until I click a button but disappears immediately because of the button press.

The current wine version sucks big time and none of the games I play work well, hell wine 1.1.41 (or whatever crap the latest version is called) has now caused some serious graphics issues for me. I am having to align my desktop every single time I boot, which is well. Any solutions regarding installing wine 1.1.31 on 10.04?

Basically, I have been running Ubuntu on my backup machines for near a year now and I LOVE it. I want to move my main machine over to Ubuntu as well but there is one thing standing in my way: namely, my Steam collection.
I've seen on several websites and forum threads that Steam and its games run fairly well through Wine, but I've never used Wine before and am kind of nervous about setting this all up. My question is, is there any tutorial available that can walk me through getting steam working through Wine without issues? I've gotten fairly used to linux at this point, so I'm not afraid of the shell, I'm just looking for a little guidance. Also, a side question: I play Garry's Mod all the time, which I could see having lot of potential problems running on linux due to all the addons and stuff. Have any of you ever played Gmod on Ubuntu before? And if so does it work ok with most of the addons?
