Fedora Installation :: F12 DVD Has Error - Tried Burning And Downloading Several Times

Nov 21, 2009

I've downloaded the DVD version of Fedora 12 with a torrent so it shouldn't be corruped - checked the hash anyway and it wasn't - and I burnt it at a low speed and has my burning program verify that it did indeed burn what it was supposed to. I tested the disc for errors and every time it shows up that around the 70% mark that the DVD has an error.

Fedora Installation :: Force The Gnome Fallback To Start Up Directly On A Reboot?

Aug 12, 2011

After a great deal of pain I have Fedora 15 running in Virtual Box 4.1 on a older Mac Book Pro running Lion. When I boot Fedora 15 I get a black screen. I can get a virtual console by banging on the fn ctrl option f2 keys I can then use 'startx' to get another black screen but clicking around for a bit gives me the gnome fallback windowing. Is there any way I can force the gnome fallback to start up directly on a reboot?

OpenSUSE Install :: Installing 11.3 With/without Burning?

Nov 30, 2010

i've decided that i wanna learn a bit of linux, and so i tried to install suse... i've come to have a lot of problems:i downloaded both the KDE Live CD and the DVD (4++ gb), both 64 bit.i dunno about the software there, but should i get the 32 bit version becouse is more likely they works or the 64 bit is fine?

what i'd like to do is overwrite my windows 7 (basically get rid of it, only way for me to use linux).i tried installing from Live CD (burned) but it does not seems to work, tried the USB thing but still something is wrong, is like is not recognized... i can't burn 4++ gb so i was wondering if there is a way to use the ISO w/o burning it... ofc i tried but in the boot menu it asks for a CD so nothing to do.

OpenSUSE Install :: Checking The Iso Download Before Burning To DVD?

Nov 12, 2009

Check of Suse 11.2 iso Download

I am a bit unsure of checking the iso download before burning to DVD.

'Checksums

Before you burn your CD/DVD images, you should check the files for errors. Two files named *.iso.md5 and *.iso.sha1 are available. These files contains hashes for each ISO image that is available from that download location. The relevant line would look like the following:

8abac6680ecc152f103006b02f9ff67f some.iso

To be sure that download did not contain any errors, you should create this number using MS5 or SHA1 algorithm for your own ISO image.

[edit]
Using Linux
On Linux, run one of the command,:
md5sum some.iso
sha1sum some.iso

If there is any difference between the output of the checksum command and the above number, the download is broken and should be repeated.'

Is some a linux command?

I assume it is run at the same location as the download?

General :: Possible To Install CentOS Without Burning It Under Windows 7?

Nov 16, 2010

I need to learn a few things about CentOS so I decided to install it on my laptop, Windows 7 is already installed on it and there is no CD/DVD drive so I though that I could just create a new partition and mount the CentOS image and install it ... but I don't even see an .exe file so I guess this is not the right way to do it

(Yeah I'm a complete Linux noob, I know that CentOS is not the most user friendly OS but it's really the one I need to learn)

So what you should I do to install it this way ? (if it is really possible)

OpenSUSE Install :: Checking The ISO File's Checksum Before Burning?

Apr 12, 2010

I downloaded the DVD ISO version of OpenSuSe version 11.2 64bit from openSUSE. I checked the iso file checksum after downloading and it was correct. However after burning to DVD i booted from the disc and started the install. After getting passed the initial settings and it starts to extract all of the packages each file fails the checksum and will not install. I tried downloading again on a different computer and burning again using UltraISO using the Disc-At-Once method, again checking the ISO file's checksum before burning.

It still gives the same errors. So i loaded windows and started the windows based install and my anti-virus (Kaspersky) says the disc is infected with a trojan. How can the disc be infected when the ISO file's checksum is correct?. The computer that i am using to burn the disc is virus free according to Kaspersky and Norton Technician Toolkit.

I don't have support for burning MP3's in K3b on Fedora 13. K3b is, for me the one and only best burn in tool and I use it exclusively for backuups to CD's, DVD's, saving music, etc. Various blogs say to go to Livna and install k3b-extras-nonfree but when I tried that, k3b-extras-nonfree was not found.

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Boot Directly To LXDE

Nov 29, 2009

I'm running an old P3 with 512 of Ram.I installed Opensuse 11.2 with the KDE desktop, and then I went online and used the one-click install to install the LXDE desktop. Now I'm trying to get my machine to boot directly to LXDE.If I end a KDE session, I can select LXDE as a new session and get into it fine. It seems to run well on this machine. But if I shutdown from LXDE, my next boot sends me straight into KDE. It seems the only way I can get to LXDE is to be in KDE first, which is kind of defeating the whole reason why I wanted a light weight and quick booting desktop for this machine.Am I missing something? I thought Opensuse automatically rebooted back into whatever desktop was used last?

OpenSUSE Install :: Reboot Directly To Another System?

Jul 7, 2010

in a previous version of openSUSE (I think it was v10.3), there was a possibility to directly/automatically start another OS after exiting (rebooting) openSUSE. This could be done through "right-clicking" on the Reboot (Restart) button from the KDE's log-off dialog and choosing the OS you wanted to be started after the restart. Please, does anybody know if this is possible in openSUSE 11.2 (KDE 4.4)? PS: I know that GRUB enables that, but I prefer a "GUI way" rather than using command line and editing configuration files

Ubuntu Installation :: Edit ISO Image Before Burning To CD/DVD?

Jan 6, 2011

I plan to make multi boot linux DVD, with help of SarduCD software, so, I have one question. configured Linux ISO image is not as I would like, I would like to change appearance and to add some softwares, in that way I will not have to change and install it every time I use live DVD in the future. I have now already installed 4 linux in one DVD but evey time I use it, I must change and install softwares, now I want to install on DVD the newest version of Ubuntu and Kubuntu, beside puppy and some other distros, and my question is: how to edit K/Ubuntu ISO image with aim that I don't need to change anything anymore after I burn it on DVD?

I suppose I should unpack and edit ISO image (add softwares and change appearance) and after that pack it again in ISO image. Maybe it is easier to burn Ubuntu to CD, to change and install what I want, into Live CD, and then to extract such Ubuntu to ISO image, then it would be ready to burn it together with other distros into DVD?

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting Directly From An Iso?

I've used Ubuntu for a couple of years now, and it is by far my favorite operating system. Although, I am now reluctantly switching to Windows 7, due to lack of support for the Apple Airport Extreme.

My CD drives are incapable of recognizing the DVD that I burned of Windows 7.

My only other option now seems to be to boot directly from the Windows 7 iso that I have.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10.

Fedora :: CD Burning Stop Working?

Oct 17, 2009

I was burning a disc with K3b and it was from an ISO; Burn and verify. Everything went successful, but when I put in my 2nd DVD to burn, K3b doesn't recognize it. On top of that when I right click on the icon of a Blank DVD on my desktop, it doesn't have the Eject Volume option there anymore. Does anybody know what could be going on here? why would my Fedora (11) stop burning and ejecting discs all of a sudden?

also, I tried this with multiple DVDs/drives to see if they were bad DVDs/drives and it's all the same result. Also, since I didn't have the eject option on my desktop I had to eject it with K3b from within the program. There's still a problem though.

edit: Some reason K3b is recognising discs again and is burning again. I guess the restart did it and I don't know why it was acting funny.
