Fedora :: How To Install From DVD ISO On Hard Disk

Oct 26, 2010

Sometimes it may be necessary, or just convenient, to install Fedora from the DVD ISO file located on a local hard drive. The method I describe here does that, with two requirements. It uses GRUB4DOS, and the necessary files must be located on a FAT32 or EXT2/3/4 partition. Create the new partition and name it "FEDORA". It does not need to be a primary partition, and can be deleted later. An existing partition can also be used, but you will either need to change it's name as shown or put the correct name in the kernel line of the menu.lst file when that is created in step 5.

Use your favorite ISO program to open or mount the the DVD ISO image file and extract the /images directory to the root of the partition. Copy the DVD ISO image file to the root directory of the partition. Prepare a method to boot GRUB4DOS. See the following GRUB4DOS tutorial page for details about that task. [URL] Create a menu.lst file for GRUB4DOS with the following lines and place it in the appropriate location for your installation of GRUB4DOS.

Code:
title F13 DVD Install
find --set-root /Fedora-13-i386-DVD.iso
map /Fedora-13-i386-DVD.iso (hd32)
map --hook
root (hd32)
kernel /isolinux/vmlinuz repo=hd:LABEL="FEDORA":/
initrd /isolinux/initrd.img
Now just boot GRUB4DOS, select "F13 DVD Install" from the menu, and install away!

For the GRUB4DOS direct-mapping to work, the ISO file cannot be fragmented. If the partition is fresh (newly created), that shouldn't be a problem. However, using an existing partition will likely fragment the file, and you'll need to defragment it with a Windows utility (FAT32) first. I've actually only done this on FAT32, but EXT should work too, theoretically... Translation - use FAT32 on a new partition.

OpenSUSE Install :: When Verifying A Disk After Burning Suse On It It Keeps Giving Errors

Nov 20, 2009

I've been trying to burn Suse 11.2 to a DVD now for a couple of days but I keep running into trouble. When verifying a disk after burning Suse on it it keeps giving me errors. I've tried Nero and ImgBurn, different burners, different ISOs, different burning speeds (downloaded via torrent and http) but it keeps giving me the verification error.

The only thing I haven't tried is a different brand of DVDs but until now I've never had any problems with this brand.

Software :: How To Install And Boot Fedora 12 On An External Hard Disk

Sep 9, 2010

I have read other posts regarding the installations of different distros on external hard disk, but these did not help..

I want to install fedora 12 on a new external hard disk, so that i can boot from it on any system that supports booting from usb hard disk, and do all my work from the extenal hard disk itself. I want to know the exact procedure to install fedora on extenal hdd, and what do i need to do, so that the grub, (which i will install on the /boot partition of external hdd), get detected by the primary boot loader of mbr..

Or, I just need to boot from external hard disk.. please any one try to make it possible.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Install To Hard Drive" Feature Of The F14 X86_64 Desktop Disk?

Jan 5, 2011

I managed to have the ATI Catalyst driver (10.12) installed on a machine with F14 x86_64, Radeon HD 57xx and I also installed the ATI SDK Samples for OpenCL. ATI Catalyst reports OpenGL fine, glxinfo is fine, all OpenCL samples that do not use OpenGL are working fine. I used the "install to hard drive" feature of the F14 x86_64 desktop disk. Problem: which headers and libraries do I need to install in order to use OpenGL in an application? I would also like to have the OpenCL working on the system for another application.

Previously I had a small application working with SDL + Mesa library on FC9 using software rendering, but after F14 installation and ATI card addition the app is not working. Files gl.h, glu.h are missing. I checked the system and I found only a glew.h header. I tried linking against glew but it complains about glu.h (file not found).

I looked on the Internet and I found a post that someone suggested installing xorg-x11-devel, but there is no such package. I tried installing libX11-devel...f1.x86_64 but the gl.h/glu.h were still missing. I tried compiling the latest Mesa library with make linux-dri-x86_64 and it complains about egl. All dependencies have been checked (dri2proto, X11 version, libdrm, kernel version). After Mesa installation ATI Catalyst is no longer reporting OpenGL and glxinfo is not working. Am I supposed to install just the Mesa library without the ATI driver? Am I supposed to use glew only with the ATI driver?

General :: Changing GRUB From An External Hard Disk To The Internal Hard Disk?

May 14, 2010

I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

General :: Use Hard Disk Image Like A Regular Hard Disk?

Apr 6, 2010

If you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk?

By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...

(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop, offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Install 12.1 M5 From Hard Disk - Error - No Repository Found

Sep 13, 2011

I would like to test 12.1 M5 on my real hardware, so I have special for this purpose two additional partitions (sda2 (to install milestone) and sda3 (to store installation ISO files)). I am running my stable 11.4 with Grub on sda1.

I do not like to burn DVDs just for short test of one milestone, so I was used to download DVD ISO, to unpack it to sda3 partition with all its files, then I changed Grub to boot install Linux from sda3. Installation complains there is no DVD or CD, then I chose to force installation from hard disk and select sda3 partition and select root directory "/". As I was used to from 11.4 this will start installation as it would be started from DVD.

But I think the problem has appeared since 12.1, where I get message: No repository found. (on sda3 / ), so the installation does not start.

I know this is not official way to install openSuse, but it worked before, and it was fast and easy for me, to install from hard disk.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Why Is Burning A Video DVD So Hard

Apr 8, 2011

I have a Video DVD on HDD. Complete structure in VIDEO_TS folder. Problem is I can't find a program to successfully burn it. Brasero doesn't even have an option for Video DVD. The Video DVD option it has wants to try and do encoding or something. It doesn't even take the VIDEO_TS folder. If you choose data disc and burn the VIDEO_TS folder then the disc don't work in stand-alone DVD players and only works on the Linux pc itself.

Gnomebaker has the same problem as above.

K3B doesn't want to work. Just keeps giving the error "Unable to determine size of image".

So where to turn ? Is there an app for Ubuntu that can actually burn a video dvd to be playable in a stand-alone dvd player ?

OpenSUSE Install :: Mount With NFS An USB Hard Disk?

Jul 5, 2011

I've used YAST to include a USB hard disk in the export list and mount it to remote machine with NFS. That worked first time the disk was mounted. On the next reboot I saw that the USB disk was mounted again in "/media" but in new folder and its previous folder existed but empty and was mounted with nfs. It seems that first nfs comes mounted in booting time and then USB gets mounted after logging as a user. USB hard disk finds its folder occupied and automatically creates new folder in "/media". What should be done in order to USB hard disk and nfs to be mounted in the same point automatically on the boot ? The second question : When I mount an external disk to be accessible remotely with nfs I get refused to unmount the disk as a USB device. Is it possible to be unmounted as a USB disk done without unmounting it as a nfs as well?

OpenSUSE Install :: Hard Disk Error -1013?

Mar 13, 2010

I have a qzd notebook with an rdc 1010 flash drive. I have downloaded the new 11.2 version of opensuse and it now recognises it, so thanks for that.Only trouble is I get an error message of:Failure occured during following action: Setting disk label of disk /dev/sda to msdos. System error code was: -1013A little history is required in orderI had windows xp installed to begin with (fool me ay!) and when I installed the adobe flash player 10, it always crashed my internet explorer, so i managed to find flash player 7, which I installed and it worked (kind of; it played videos, but stallingly; although this might be to do with the fact that i was also upgrading to IE 8 at the same time) but after a few seconds of it playing a video the computer reset and the message DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER appears. It seems that this flash player was some kind of virus and I worry that it may of damaged the flash drive, or is it that it's just messed up the MBR.
