I am a bit unsure of checking the iso download before burning to DVD.
'Checksums
Before you burn your CD/DVD images, you should check the files for errors. Two files named *.iso.md5 and *.iso.sha1 are available. These files contains hashes for each ISO image that is available from that download location. The relevant line would look like the following:
8abac6680ecc152f103006b02f9ff67f some.iso
To be sure that download did not contain any errors, you should create this number using MS5 or SHA1 algorithm for your own ISO image.

Using Linux
On Linux, run one of the command,:
md5sum some.iso
sha1sum some.iso
If there is any difference between the output of the checksum command and the above number, the download is broken and should be repeated.'
Is some a linux command?
I assume it is run at the same location as the download?

Aug 1, 2011I was able to burn a DVD-RW with K3B (after changing "sudo chmod 4755 /usr/bin/wodim") but when I try to burn to a CD-R it fails after the opc check. I tried changing the write-speed to 8X (since that's the max for this CD-R) but it still fails.

Aug 31, 2010This query is about Machine # 1 - Asus P5Q Deluxe, C2Duo 3.0GHZ, 4.0 GB ram, nVidia 8500, openSUSE 11.2 64-bit, KDE 4.3.5I am having a little concern about the way Dolphin file manager behaves in the 64 bit openSUSE and am wondering if there is a solution for it.Every file I download from the net goes into a 'Check' folder, and I check it over before moving it to it's proper place.In the 32bit version nSuse 11.2, I can watch files being downloaded to that 'Check' folder. I call this realtime file postingIn the 64 bit openSUSE 11.2, I have to close the 'Check' folder and reopen it to see the downloaded file, so, everytime I download something, I have to close and reopen the 'Check' folder. It does not post the file to the folder until the folder has been closed and reopened.I have checked the settings of both machines for Dolphin file manager and see nothing [apparently] different, yet this still persists.

Nov 30, 2010i've decided that i wanna learn a bit of linux, and so i tried to install suse... i've come to have a lot of problems:i downloaded both the KDE Live CD and the DVD (4++ gb), both 64 bit.i dunno about the software there, but should i get the 32 bit version becouse is more likely they works or the 64 bit is fine?
what i'd like to do is overwrite my windows 7 (basically get rid of it, only way for me to use linux).i tried installing from Live CD (burned) but it does not seems to work, tried the USB thing but still something is wrong, is like is not recognized... i can't burn 4++ gb so i was wondering if there is a way to use the ISO w/o burning it... ofc i tried but in the boot menu it asks for a CD so nothing to do.

I've tried add/remove software, and it said "package download failed, check internet connection" which doesn't make sense because I'm connected to the internet and my connection is fine. Apr 12, 2010I downloaded the DVD ISO version of OpenSuSe version 11.2 64bit from openSUSE. I checked the iso file checksum after downloading and it was correct. However after burning to DVD i booted from the disc and started the install. After getting passed the initial settings and it starts to extract all of the packages each file fails the checksum and will not install. I tried downloading again on a different computer and burning again using UltraISO using the Disc-At-Once method, again checking the ISO file's checksum before burning.
It still gives the same errors. So i loaded windows and started the windows based install and my anti-virus (Kaspersky) says the disc is infected with a trojan. How can the disc be infected when the ISO file's checksum is correct?. The computer that i am using to burn the disc is virus free according to Kaspersky and Norton Technician Toolkit.

Nov 20, 2009I've been trying to burn Suse 11.2 to a DVD now for a couple of days but I keep running into trouble. When verifying a disk after burning Suse on it it keeps giving me errors. I've tried Nero and ImgBurn, different burners, different ISOs, different burning speeds (downloaded via torrent and http) but it keeps giving me the verification error.
The only thing I haven't tried is a different brand of DVDs but until now I've never had any problems with this brand.

Apr 17, 2010After a recent update, when ever I attempt to open a ".ogv" extension from within Dolphin File Mananger in KDE4.4.2, I get a window that pops up every time for Checking For additional Software to install. It does this in spite of the fact I already have several players and the default set to SMPlayer to play the files. How do I turn this behavior off? It's really annoying because you either have to wait for it to finish checking (and finding nothing BTW) or Cancel it in order to play the file. This just started recently. I don't see anything obvious in Dolphin configuration, but I'm not even sure it's related to Dolphin at all.

Dec 13, 2009how to update my system online (for example my firefox 3.0 to 3.5) but i can't figure out how this possibly works. I tried the "online update" using Yast2 but apparently (according to Yast) there is nothing at all to be patched on my system. I tried to click on the Firefox-3.5.5 rpm in the repository web-interface and open it using "install software" but the process aborts because of unresolved dependencies. Is there an easy way to update software without having to download/install every dependency manually?

Apr 7, 2011There are numerous fs checks with transaction log replay at every boot of my opensuse 11.4 notebook.I do not see any error messages on the console during shutdown or startup (but maybe I am just reading too slow)./var/log/messages contains some error messages from NetworkManager during shutdown, but I think they are unrelated.Filesystems I use are ext4 for /boot, ntfs for windows partitions, reiserfs for the root filesystem and for several logical volumes.
As far as I could see the checks are only done on the reiserfs filesystems on the logical volumes but I cannot see any warnings during volume group activation, so it seems the logical volumes are deactivated at shutdown.Of course I do wait until the notebook powers off by itself on shutdown.I'll provide /var/log/messages of a shutdown/boot shortly

Debian :: How To Download Stable Version And Check MD5
May 31, 2015I want to install Debian Stable 8 Jessie. I've tried the main website, of course, first. But there are a lot of options there to download Debian 8: CD, DVD, Live etc. I downloaded debian-live-8.0.0-amd64-lxde-desktop.iso and I booted live in VirtualBox. It boots fine and the operating system looks in order.
Questions/problems:
1. The desktop icon for the installer says "Install Debian sid". But from what I know "sid" is unstable version. I do not want unstable, nor testing. I just want normal Stable. Did I got the wrong version? The website is a bit confusing about which version is which.
2. How do I check the md5 of the iso? I know how to do that with other distros, they usually specify it near the download link and I can execute in terminal the command 'md5sum' followed by the specific linux distro iso and then compare the numbers. But I can find no such thing for Debian. I searched the website but could not find any clear info.
3. After I install, what should I do in order to make Iceweasel work with Flash and multimedia codecs? I also need Skype and the proprietary Nvidia drivers.
And if I enable these non free, do I get automatic updates for them like for the rest of standard Debian software? Or, if not, what should I do?
The idea is that I want a system that is as stable and bug free as possible, but I won't use many apps beyond these ones. I don't need the latest and greatest software as long as these get security updates. Should I be ok with this configuration?

May 28, 2010Because I was getting some package errors, I ran the Repair Installed System option that shows up after boot. During System Check when earching for package databases,YaST2 is not able to find /var/lib/rpm/Filemd5s. After a while, a YaST2 box pops up and says that it Successfully rebuilt the package databaseïbut I get the same error when I run System Check again. I've chosen both Rebuild Package Database as well as Revert to Original Package Database (saved by YaST)In both cases, it saysat it was successful, but the same error occurs the next time I run System Check

Jun 23, 2010Since the DVD is only 4.7GB and missing some stuff (e.g. pvm) I decided to download the network install /oss folder for openSUSE 11.2 so that I can install multiple copies locally and keep my bandwidth usage down.
I've downloaded the full /oss folder using wget -r and wget -cr during my ISP's free bandwidth slot (12-8am - and it took 2 sessions to get it all).Wget didn't throw up any errors so why the difference?Is there any (simple) way I can check the integrity of the download?

Oct 19, 2010A while back I set up TFTPD32 and apache on my windows machine to allow installation of openSUSE via PXE. The client machine would boot, drag the kernel off tftp, then start the installation from which was an apache alias to a mounted ISO of the 11.2 DVD. It worked quickly and easily. That is the internationally recognised Condition for Vista to perform its main function: sh1tting the bed. Configuration lost.
Now, in a couple hours of searching and experimenting, I can't find guidance on how to get that same setup back. SDBXE boot installation - openSUSE covers 90% of it, but I don't want the installation to connect to a repo and download new files - soundly killing my internet connection downloading files that are already on the install ISO I'm serving.I want it to find all it needs in the served directory holding the ISO contents.My pxelinux.cfg/default :

Mar 29, 2011I've tried downloading 11.4 64-bit about a dozen times, and it always failed to checksum comparison. I've tried downloading it directly using Mozilla. I've tried that from a mirror (several actually). I've tried using Download Them All to get it and is failed both the MD5 and SHA1. BTW, those fail the checksum as soon as the Download Them All window opens. I've tried bitTorrent. I've tried it on two different machines. I've tried it from linux through Mozilla and Download Them All just to be sure it's not my anti-virus or software firewall.
BTW, in the process of installing a new HD on my desktop, somehow my OpenSUSE linux install has gotten corrupted (or something), so I don't have access to a linux install. Any suggestions how I can get a good download? I'm hoping I can use it to repair my existing install, and to install openSUSE on my laptop.
