Ubuntu :: Add / Remove Programs And Update Manager - Similar Error
Apr 30, 2010
In both of these areas, when I actually go to "Install" the things, whether it be adding or removing programs, or doing the Update Manager, I get the same error as soon as I click "Install," and it fails to install any selected programs/updates.
Here is the following error:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I have not been able to find this "sudo dpkg" file to manually run.
everytime i try to install the updates from the update manager i get this error message:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, i have tried running the sudo dpkg --configure -a in the terminal but when it asks for the password the keyboard stops working so i cant type anything into the terminal. can anyone help me fix this? My other problem was when i try to run the Add/Remove Applications i can't ever install any of the software because it says its "waiting for other tasks" i'm not sure why its doing this either.
I usually run my updates every Friday, my last good update was 4-Mar-2011. I could not update this week and got an error -"PackageKit Error repo-not-available: File '/repodata/repomd.xml' not found on medium http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Tumbleweed:/Raw/openSUSE_Tumbleweed_standard/'"I get a similar error message when starting Yast Software Management. Is this related to the 11.4 release? I'm waiting for fewer bugs before I upgrade to 11.4, so I'd like to be able to keep current with 11.3.
I was wondering why some programs are removed when doing a (partial) upgrade. For instance the Nvidia drivers, the network manager and some other server components are removed.
This is very annoying since you're receiving updates on a regular basis.
(screenshot of the update manager announcing the programs it's going to remove)
Ubuntu 10.04, update manager: the package "libmyth-perl" shows up, but is greyed. I have purged all myth-tv (assuming this package belongs there) from my system, but I am unable to remove this package from the update manager.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.While running a partial update through System->adminstration->update-manager. I am facing error as 'Error Authenticating some packages". Please find the attached, screenshot of the error and sources.list file output.
I did a clean install of Natty 32 bit on my desktop last Saturday. Now the update manager wants to remove empathy via a partial upgrade. I waited for a day to see if the issue would be resolved, but it isn't. I cannot see the changelog either. On running
after initating the update and i enter my pass word, update stops and an error box comes up stating that it is unable to update because there is more than one synaptic manager running, i have restarted and get the same results, and to my knowledge there is nothing else running in the background.
What does the below mean and how to fix it, or doesn't it matter? Ubuntu 10.04 LTS,E:synaptics-dkms: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
I tried to install Cairo from the "Synaptic Package Manager" but i was unsuccessful, also i cant open the "Synaptic Package Manager" or "Update Manager" without getting an error. I have posted both the errors below, please can someone please tell me how to fix this problem.

report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Type 'Cairo-Dock-PPA-Stable' is not known on line 55 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.'
As usual, I let the update manager run.. But now something bad happened and a red button is showing in the system tray, which when I hover my mouse over it, tells me to open package manager or try "sudo apt-get" in terminal to see what is wrong..
If I enter sudo apt-get upgrade, I get the following errors.. How can I fix it.. I am unable to open package manager itself..
Code: E: Problem parsing dependency Depends E: Error occurred while processing gconf2 (NewVersion1) E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
I just got this error message when Update Manager tried updating: Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Type 'sudo' is not known on line 56 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list' I've been using Ubuntu for awhile, so I know my way around some stuff, but I'm completely lost on what to do here.
This is the error that the update manager kicks out. I am an running a pretty fresh install, hickup free until now using 10.10, Dual Boot with Win 7 (rarely used) and my internet connection is working flawlessly otherwise.

i hav recently upgraded to 10.10 and followed by wine. I tried to upgrade from wine 1.2 to 1.3 but i could not. Later i encountered a problem. This is it:An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information."E : ntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu is not known on line 2 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu-wine-ppa-maverick.list'"
I reported with a error while opening the update manager. It shows E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/in.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty-updates_main_i18n_Translation-en%5fIN, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
I am completely new at Ubuntu and would like to solve a problem I have when I try the update manager. I get this message:"Could not initialize the package information. An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
I am new to ubuntu. So far I really like it. However I am just wondering, is there a way to check and see how much ram and processor you are using similar to Task Manager in Windows?
I am helping a friend (remotely) and she has a problem on the laptop which prevents doing any updates. The error message is Could not initialise the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initialising the package information. Please report this bug for the 'update-manager' package and try to include the following error message:
'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty-updates_restricted_binary-amd64_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
I just did latest update and I get the following error message "The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct. Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found. Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."
Along with the standard messages, apt-get displayed
Code:
gpg: symbol lookup error: /usr/local/lib/libreadline.so.6: undefined symbol: PC This occurs on using the update manager, package manager, apt-get update, etc. Any ideas? I've tried deleting the cached files, changing my server, checking that my date & time are correct (signing can be time sensitive), updating gpg (it was already at the latest), and maybe some other things I've forgotten.
I keep getting the following error when the Update Manager runs.
Code: E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report. If I open up a terminal and run sudo dpkg --configure -a I then get the following error.
Code: dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0002' near line 1: newline in field name `
Ever time I try to use Update Manager or Synaptic Package Manager I get this Error Message:
I have been wondering if I just need to do a fresh install. Am currently using 9.10 on a Compaq laptop which is prone to overheating and "freezing", usually within 2 hours. Maybe time to install 10.04?
