I am trying to give yum install samba command to install samba software in my FEDORA9 machine but I am getting errors as I am not able to connect to any of the UPDATE servers as they show links are not available.
View 1 RepliesI downloaded and installed the newest version of Fedora, version 15, in my refurbished computer. It's the CD version; so much of the stuff are missing, including an office suite. I didn't have a DVD-ROM drive on the system, thus I installed the CD version. On the CD version, I was displeased that I can't install Samba offline; I had to download it. Don't ask me why I don't want to download it, it's just my preference to be able to have a basic computer function like Samba on an official distribution, like a calculator, an office suite (again, was left out), and a file manager.
Fedora's website describes the DVD edition of the operating system as having more software than the CD version. Now, for those who have used the new Fedora and also used Samba, does it come installed, or do you have to go online to download it? I understand if you don't want MP3s or DVD decryption software, but how does LAN file-sharing count as something that's illegal?
What is the command to install CUPS and Samba, like yum install. I don't want to be installing wrong things and then end up with dependency problems, and after that what do i need to configure to have CUPS print from the localhost, and so that other computers from the networks also be able to print from the server, that is i'm workin on a server. As for samba i just need the installation command, then i want to figure the rest out.

This is a fresh 11.04 install. I grabbed a couple of the basics (alternate browsers, media players, etcetera) but other than that I haven't made any modifications or installed any strange packages.

I know that the server with the samba shares is working since I can access them from the windose box. I have just moved from using Ubuntu to Fedora and have definitely found my home. How would I tell if samba is running (or any service for that matter) on my notebook? I Installed samba-client

I am trying to get Fedora F11 to see my network PC's and have searched high and low trying to find the problem. I have a local network with several WinXP, VISTA, MAC, and MYBOOKWORLD, devices as well as 2 Fedora machines. Everything sees everything and is able to transfer files just fine except the two Fedora machines.
They see nothing on the network. All the other machines do see the Fedora machines, and are able to transfer files to them. Both have the /var/ directory shared. This network worked just fine back when running Fedora FC5 and FC7. After upgrading to FC9 I was unable to see the network from the Fedora machine, but did not have a need to do that so ignored the problem. After installing FC11 on another machine, I now have a need for the two machines to see the network and transfer files. The error I get is nearly identical on both of the Fedora machines.

COWBOY is the workgroup all of the computers are in. On the FC9 machine I do not get the error, the screen just goes blank when I click on "COWBOY" The other difference is that on the FC11 machine it does see itself and has an icon next to the "Windows Network" icon. I can click on it and mount the shares. They do not show up in the windows network.
The configuration of swat and samba. I have tried the vi edit approach but there is no save option so after I edit it and close it, it just says the terminal is in the middle of a process and closing will kill it or something to that effect. Of course then it doesn't save the changes. That reminds me that I do su to root before I do this. I have also tried the pam edit in order to allow myself to log on to root from the gui but that doesn't work either. Am I missing something? I can't imagine how you are supposed to configure anything if it won't let you even in root. Would the fact that my user and root passwords are the same effect this in anyway? I'm desperate as this is for a school project and obviously I'm new to linux.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI wish to prevent the samba messages (mainly nmbd and winbindd) from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages). I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.

smbd.* /dev/null
winbindd.* /dev/null
For interests sake the messages I'm getting are below (I'm not concerned about the messages themselves, I can chase them up at my leisure via the samba logs) Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet xx.yy.z.zz for name DOMAIN<1d>. I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
Have recently setup Samba on a fresh install of Fedora 14 so that I can use it as a workstation in a Windows 2003 (win2k3) domain.
The install of Samba seems to have worked as I can connect to the Domain using ADS and kerberos. selinux and firewall have been disabled until I have it working 100%
The problem lies when i try to login to Gnome or TTY. It begins to create the home directory for the domain user logging in but after a certain process Fedora logs the user out of the system.
Have looked through several log files (/var/log/messages, log.winbindd, log.winbindd-dc-connect) but am unable to debug it any further.
Have posted the config files below which shows the Fedora machine is successfully connected to the domain as it lists its groups, users and validates logon credentials - it just won't logon!
Where i can go about debugging. Also if you need additional configs.
I am used to Ubuntus simple sharing with samba. Just install it, reboot and then share the files.Then do I klick on network folder and see all the shared files on the computers in the network.
How do I install it so I only need to go into network folder and see the other computers shared files.Then, how do I share files?
I hope it's not so difficult and that I have to change i config-files.

For some reason when I started installation it was trying to install 432 packages (Base has got about 80 or so packages). i can understand there might be some dependencies, but really that much? I kept going with the installation of 432 packages, but it finally failed on gtk2-immodule-xim-2.18.3-19.fc12.i686.rpm.I need just minimal install, so I can install LXDE later on by myself.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have been using Redhat/Fedora for 11 years. I don't understand why Fedora 11, can't even do a vga graphical install, when Windows can.
I tried many parameters, including xdriver=vesa, and it cannot used graphical install.
So, I tried text install, which I have done many times in the past.
However, F11 seems crippled, in that it will NOT do the same install achievable from a graphical install.
It will NOT allow the use of fdisk, and it will NOT allow any selection of any packages.
What is the point of this option?
Even after trying all of this, for a dual boot install, and F11 claims to have installed, there is no grub or equivalent, and the computer just boots windows, just like Fedora 11 did absolutely nothing.
What are the options now? Why is text install so crippled and incomplete? Why is standard VGA mode so hard?

After upgrading to 9.10 when ever a samba dependent upgrade is attempted through the update manager the process hangs up at "configuring samba".I REMOVED samba, samba-common, winbind, etc.I tried-

I have a Western Digital Pasport 320 GB hard drive. I wanted to create a live installation on it like a USB stick. I wanted it to serve as a portable OS that I could use to boot any other computer off of, and use it for diagnostics and anti-virus scanning on Windows based computers. The additional space is for my own personal use, kind of like having a mobile desktop where I have all of my documents in one place.What I need to know is how to set up Fedora 11 so that the hard drive will boot on most PCs regardless of their architecture. I also need to know what's a good Anti-virus to install onto it for the sake of fixing Windows hard drives.
Please keep in mind I'm a noob when it comes down to a lot of things, so if there's an antivirus I have to install manually, please included a step by step.
