Has somebody used DAFS (Direct Access File System)?I've found a lot of literature about this file system,where the comprassion tests promise a ~20-50% faster packet transmission,than in the strandard NFS.But I can't install DAFS,because the source code is for old kernels 2.4.Does anyone know,why did the research of this file system stopped in 2003 year,and there are no newer versions?

View 3 Replies View RelatedNow that we are starting to face the reality of Vista/Win7 implementations, we will need to do an upgrade of Samba to enable functionality. I am having difficulty in upgrading our version of Samba (3.3.4), as I compile from source, and do not use binary distributions. I'm running Slack12 and could really use some help on how I can build samba from source and UPGRADE it easily?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to 9.10 when ever a samba dependent upgrade is attempted through the update manager the process hangs up at "configuring samba".I REMOVED samba, samba-common, winbind, etc.I tried-

$ sudo apt-get install -f
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

I have update my linux server from mandriva 9 to mandriva 2010
I was working using samba 2.2.8 and now I have samba 3.5.3.I have transfer all passwd and smbpasswd to new linux.I have convert smbpasswd to tdbsam
when i am using win xp to logon on samba domain the windows XP does not load profiles from samba. I think that the problem is NTUSER.DAT storing in /home/user/profile
The same profile is working using samba 2.2.8 but not working in samba 3.5.3..
I have found that there are certain things on the web that I need to print, that simply refuse to work under linux. I have a samba printer server on one of my Slackware boxes and an M$ XP vm under Vbox that can access the server and see the printer. The only problem that I have is that it expects to download a driver from the server which isn't available and the HP driver installer won't install if it doesn't detect the printer. Short of relocating the printer to install the driver, does anyone know how to get the driver installed on the XP host? This is so much easier with my Slack boxes and CUPS!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
Start>Run>\192.168.0.1storage gives me "The specified network password is not correct." It lists my domain as "ANTEC" which is the name of my computer, though I've changed the workgroup to WELLS. I've run:
setsebool -P samba_domain_controller on
Trying to connect to samba locally gives me this:
Code:
[tedward@hp-firegate ~]$ smbclient //192.168.0.1/storage -Utedafur
Password:
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

Since I've installed opensuse 11.4 instead of 11.3, I cannot install .rpm packages nor execute updates. I get the following message: "There has been a (probably temporarily) when connecting to the software source/repository" (own translation) details: Media source [URL] does not contain the desired medium So, probably there is something wrong with my software sources. Could anyone give a suggestion to repair this since I'm not a linux expert and would like to install new software on my newly updated machine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIve managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?

I want to look at Red Hat 9 source code on the same PC I installed RH9 on. Yes, I know that is old. The CD package has 3 source CDs and each has a key. I try using:
rpm -i package_name.rpm
and I get warning saying NO_KEY. Also, where is the source installed?
We all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.
Since I have the latest updates of fedora 11, I can no more install fpc-2.4.0-1.src.rpm. What should I do?

I use it for all my accounts and passwords for all my machines and customers. I ran into quite a bit of trouble trying to build it from source as it requires the Qt and Xorg headers to compile.
The following are the steps to build and install keepassx from source on Fedora 14
Step1: Install dependencies
Code:
yum -y install gcc gcc-c++ qt-devel qt-config libXtst-devel
Step 2: Fetch source code
Code:
wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/keepassx/keepassx-0.4.3.tar.gz

In what directory do I need to install a tarball containing API libraries in order to import the libraries for programming?I've been trying for a few hours now to get started on my homework - but I need the GLUT api for OpenGL. After attempting to compile a simple test program, I got the error
Code:
glut.h: No such file or directory
First off, I'm not even really sure if OpenGL wasn't included in the original install or if I even need it when programming with GLUT (I truelly am clueless, lol). But after reading as much as I could, I've only been able to deduce that I need to install the API libraries somewhere on my disc.So I found the tarball, and there are special instructions for installing a linux machine. I found instructions saying to install it in the directory /usr/lib/ but is that right for the SUSE distro?Also, if anybody knows anything about GLUT/OpenGL programming + openSUSE11.2.
