I've been yum upgrading since Fedora 3. For the first time, I did a fresh install with Fedora 15 and I found that ibmcam.ko is no longer part of the distribution in any way (even through rpm fusion). Is there a replacement for ibmcam.ko so I can get my cam working again?
View 6 RepliesI just used dd to clone a linux partition to a new hard drive, it had 800mb left on the old hard drive, after dd, new hard drive lists 1.29/1.3 terabytes full. Is this what happens by default in dd? How can I fix this?

Like many others, I'm sure, I run my mouse with the speed of light. So, I often zip my pointer up to the top right corner, hitting the virtual "wall" and landing on the very top right pixel, and click - expecting that the window will close. In the new 10.10, the top right pixel is not included in the mighty "X" button in any theme I have tried. So, now I have to exercise some precision and move a little down/left to click my close button. It is an annoyance that I'm simply not willing to accept any longer.
For the life of me, even though I am a 4-year Ubuntu user, I have never had much reason to play with the themes or make a change like this, and I can't seem to figure out how to fix it.

I need to install fedora on my new 16 DELL servers. I will doing it through DRAC (Dell remote access console) but DRAC can mount only one ISO at a time. I am planning to do multiple installations at the same time.hence i need multiple boot.iso files for each and every DRAC console that I open for each server.The question is...How to extract just the bootable part from the fedora DVD? I don't whether it should be called boot.iso, but I hope you get my point.I believe it has got something to do with the "isolinux" folder on the DVD, but I don't know what and how.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'd like to write a kickstart file that installs available Fedora 14 updates as part of the installation process, much as if I was doing a standard Fedora 14 installation and had enabled the 'updates' repo.
So my question is, is there an easy way to do this? I don't want to have to go down the route of downloading all updated packages and maintaining my own update repo (or indeed, creating a repo with the dependencies listed above).
Requirements
1) Can be integrated into web browser (so when click on chat the a window will open for chat with technical support executive:- It will be basically used for TS)
2) Must Have option to transfer file between costumer and TS execut
3) No installation on part of client

I have been using Ubuntu for about a year and I decided to switch to Fedora just to see how it goes with getting everything in my system working again. I would say that with Ubuntu and Fedora installations I have installed and reinstalled 15 times, which I mention because I am not new to installing linux. I have used GParted to partition and resize my HD numerous times and reinstalled linux on a partition and so on. I know how to do all of that without any problems.
NOW HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED... I installed Fedora on my Desktop which I had partitioned into a 190 GB partition onto which Windows is installed and then I had another 30 GB partition onto which I chose to install Fedora. I chose the "replace existing Linux systems" in anaconda... and what resulted was a 30 GB partition with Fedora that is now showing up as LVM. I have never seen an LVM partition and I am not sure if I can use GPARTED to resize it without destroying it. I have used GPARTED to resize Linux partitions before, but they were never showing up as LVM. The forums on GPARTED only show info from about a year or two ago.
Here is what I want to do (and reading around on forums doesn't really give a good explanation of whether it is possible)... Is it possible to install Linux Mint into that 30 GB Fedora LVM partition by just resizing the Fedora part of the volume? So, the question is this: How can I resize the Fedora part of the LVM volume and then install Mint into that LVM partition?
If Fedora was on an ordinary 30 GB partition I would have no problem with using GPARTED to chop that in half and then use the 15 GB I freed up to install Mint. I just don't want to destroy the Fedora stuff by messing around the with the LVM partition so I would like to hear from others who have worked around this issue and please don't link to the ordinary LVM howto's you get through a simple google search as I have already read them and I don't find them too illuminating.
I wanted to shrink my Windows NTFS partition to allow me to grow my extended partition which contains my Linux partitions, namely to grow my swap space and home directory some however it just fails at enlarging the extended partition. Is this a known problem because I know there were rewrites to the storeage backend of Anaconda.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIn completely new to Fedora. After a clean install, I went through, configured yum, did all yum updates and rebooted. I then installed the graphics card (m9500 gs) using RPMfusion and restarted again. After doing so, the comp shows the fedora loading bar but once it finishes, it hangs there and you see a small flashing box. I have no idea how to uninstall that nvidia driver.
to my xorg.conf. Still same issue. Finally I went through and added the "notap" to the grub.conf. I am at a complete loss here. When I try and manually load the driver, the Nvidia installer gives and error about not finding any preconfigured kernels for the package. Then It try's to build its own kernel but says its missing the "cc" in the "gcc" package. Any ideas? If you want to know exactly what I've done so far, I pretty much only followed the guide at my-guides.net. As you might be able to tell, I am very NOOB.
i have just installed fedora over a existing copy of ubuntu. The problem is i cant boot in to vista any more. i have looked over many forums trying to fix it but still wont work.the attachments are of screen shots i have with the details of the hard drive partitions.i am able to mount the hard drives and have all the data still and still have the boot folder for vista but just cant figure out how to boot in to vista.i also get the error " error 1: filename must be an absolute pathname press any key to continue" i get this error when i try to change the boot partitons

View 4 Replies View RelatedHow to customize the Ubuntu Installation for your Distribution - TUTORIAL I have looked a lot in almost every page in Ubuntu, Google and some other Linux Distributions Forums, Help Guides and Tutorials, and have never been able to customize, or even find a valuable source on customzing the Ubuntu Installation, also known as Ubiquity. Now if you are planning on creating a LiveCD or Ubuntu-based Distribution using Remastersys or some program like that, then you will love this tutorial, as do I. First of all, make sure you have Ubiquity installed.Quickly goto Synaptic now, and check. Once you have that, go inside a terminal and type sudo nautilus.Then goto /usr/share/ubiquity. You will see some system files which I will now mention again in this tutorial for the sake of my tiredness.
Here you will see the images that are presented when you select your region in the installation process. You may customize it, but I hardly recemmond it as the areas I tell you to customize are far more rewarding. Now, just go inside the "ubuntu" folder and see the "logo.png". Customize it to have your own Logo and Distribution Name. After you finish that come out of it, all the way back to /usr/share. Now we go inside the big area, where we customize a LOT. Go inside "Ubiquity-Slideshow" folder. In this folder you will see the images and text that pop up during the installation of Ubuntu. Do you remember?
Now just go into Slides/icons and here you will see the beautiful icons of all the slides. You may notice the extroadinary graphics and input the Ubuntu team has put into most of these, and so I have decided not to customize this, but you can surely go ahead. However, for legal sake, I had to customize the logo which I have changed it to be mine (that is I deleted the Ubuntu logo and replaced it with a High-Quality version of my logo). Once you feel you have done enough, please go out of that folder and scroll straight down to customize the writing on the slides in the installation.
Here you will see 13 .html files. HTML is simple, you do not have to know anything in HTML to customize these files, however you must understand to not go out of the boundaries. I'd like to upgrade my 9.10 desktop to 10.04 but I can't get past step 1.I've done alt-f2 and issued update-manager -d, but no "New distribution" option is presented.I've clicked the "check" button and updated all my repo information but that doesn't help.I've done a wireshark trace and observed that the update-manager's requests get through the corporate firewall, and responses come back.Somehow it determines that no new distro is available.I'll explore further if someone could help me out with getting hold of the relevant update-manager source code.

How to remove X completely from the system?
As a Security practice I wanted to disable X from loading.
So i modified following line from /etc/inittab.
id:3:initdefault:
I was then able to start my machine in terminal mode(runlevel 3).
I wasn't satisfied at this stage as i was able to get the graphical console by merely typing code...
Now i have made the above line commented and removed execute bit of the file .
System is now behaving as i wish it would.
I have 2 questions here.
1)Is this Method considered to be stardard while removing X in linux distro.
Will it make any difference?
I m not using any application that explicitly use graphical user interface and i can work in runlevel 3.
2)Is any package responsible for loading X .If yes then removing shall remove X from the system,correct me if i m wrong.code...
I am trying to upgrade my ubuntu distribution from 9.10 to 10.04 using update-manager. I have only 2G free in my / partition, and update-manager complains saying it needs 4G free in the / partition to upgrade.
I presume the space is needed to store downloaded packages. Is there any way I can change the download directory to some other partition (i have plenty of space in other partitions)?
In the past I have used Slackware, but I changed to Gentoo because Slackware don't have a nice package manager. I like Gentoo very much, because you have control over your installation from the very beginning. You can tweak your installation, before it's a running installation.
The main problem is that you need to compile everything from source (this has some benefits), but i haven a 3.0ghz pentium 4, so compiling a full system takes days. That's not I want.
Because of that I tried Debian, it's nice because of the large collection of precompiled packages. However, it's seems like it is less Stable then Gentoo (i run debian sid, because i need the newer applications). It's also harder to configure to my needs.
Is there a (Gentoo-based) distribution that gives the user a lot of control on the installation proces (like gentoo) and afterwards gentoo-like configuration (it was so much better then Debian, for example: Where is the xorgconfig utility in debian? I know there is something called dpkg-reconfigure to configure X, but that didn't asked me about videocard and monitor settings, only keyboard related options)
But the distribution must have binaries for all (or at least a lot of) programs.
Is there such a distribution? What does come closest to my needs?
I'm attempting to download the DVD Install ISO for Scientific Linux (Red Hat with some additions for science) to my PC-Laptop external USB Hard Disk, but the download keeps failing near the end.
My PC-Laptop is running Vista 32bit, and the external HD is a 500GB wallet sized Buffalo HD with 400 GB free. I'm no PC sys admin - but the Scientific Linux file is over 4GB in size and I wonder if this might be a problem if the HD is formatted as a FAT32 rather than an NTFS disk (if that's the correct terminology)?
The Windows Vista download window says that I've run out of space on the HD, even though I haven't.
Note that I can't think I can download this as multiple CD's rather than a single DVD distribution - because I'm trying to install this Scientific Linux in Oracle(former Sun) Virtual Box and I'm having difficulties understanding what it wants and was advised by someone to download Scientific Linux as a single iso to burn to a DVD (in the hope that Virtual box will see it for installation in the DVD drive) - but as said I'm unable to even download the DVD installation file.
the gnome-system-monitor in fedora 14 do not sho the distributionrelease in the system-tab. The place for the distribution release is empty.
View 7 Replies View RelatedEvery where I look online, people are posting ridiculous non-working ways to upgrade their system from one release to another--they do not work for me and I need a definite expert reply. I am working with a fresh install of Debian Lenny/Stable and wish to upgrade to the frozen Squeeze distribution. Supplementing the word "squeeze" in place of "lenny" in my sources.list file does not work and believe this to be an inappropriate way of upgrading. I have tried upgrading apt, dpkg, and aptitude before beginning the upgrade process, cleaning dpkg cache, rebooting, etc.
After updating the above packages I tried all methods of upgrading: safe-upgrade, full-upgrade, and dist-upgrade. All produce dependency problems and try to remove the gnome-desktop package or upgrade everything else except gnome-desktop. (Other packages are also affected, gnome-desktop is the most important in this instance). As I understand it, when upgrading you can comment out the volatile repositories as well as the security updates, is this correct?--either way I have tried countless combination's off commenting/uncommenting to try to get the needed results. I do not want use sid repos or reinstall.

I'm trying to extract .part files. These are mac extensions similar to .rar or .zip. I need to extract a whole bunch of them simultaneously. Theyre probably registered in sequence just like .rar files. What program can I yum install or where should I look to extract these to what will probably be an ISO.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI ran the ubuntu 11.04 live CD on my laptop that had an earlier version of ubuntu (9 maybe??). I really liked what I saw so I used the Install ubuntu 11.04 wizard and chose the option to override the earlier version. During the 'Importing document and settings' step a pop-up entitled Failed to unmount partitions. the body stated: migration-assistant needs to mount a partition, but cannot do so because the following mount partition could not be unmounted:
/dev/sda1
The only app showing on the taskbar is the Install. this is running from the live CD.
