Fedora Installation :: Windows Bootable CD Does Not Work?

Feb 17, 2009

I'm a newbie to Linux and FC10. I recently installed FC10 on my laptop which has the following config:

AMD64, 1gb DDR2 RAM, 60 GB HDD, DVD Drive and ATI Chipset.

The problem is FC10 locks up randomly and I have seen a couple of threads on this. I want to uninstall FC10. However I'm unable to uninstall / remove the partition. When I try to boot up my laptop using a Windows CD (planning to remove the linux partitions from the WINdows setup) I only see a blank screen, the DVD keeps on spinning but nothing happens. I have tested the windows xp cd on other machines and works fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 - USB Bootable Drive And Windows 7

Jul 6, 2011

I've downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 and used the Windows tool to create a bootable USB drive on a Corsair 4Gb USB stick. On my desktop system I run Windows 7. However, after setting up my ASUSTeK Computer INC. M4A785TD-V EVO (AM3) board to boot exclusively from USB (removed the HDD as an option), my PC still boots directly to Windows 7.

Debian Installation :: Creating Bootable USB Stick From Windows?

Jan 14, 2011

I am trying to create a bootable USB stick in Windows to install Debian on my laptop. I have looked at the guide on the [URL] website, but it seems to assume you already have access to a Linux machine with the use of zcat and other extractors. Is there anyway to create a bootable Debian USB stick in Windows? By the way, I'm trying to simply get the USB stick to become bootable and then install the OS through the internet on my laptop. My laptop does not have an optical drive, so I have to do it this way.

Ubuntu Installation :: Create A Bootable Partition Which Contains Windows 7?

Jul 28, 2011

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 on my sisters computer which I am borrowing until my laptop gets fixed by Dell *sigh*

The only catch was that I had to remove the virus thats been plaguing this computer any means necessary my plan was to delete the windows 7 partition and put Ubuntu in its place temporarily.

My sister didn't have the Windows 7 DVD that was given to her *sigh again* but she did still have the key labeled on the side of the machine. So my plan than included to download that .iso of Windows 7, and then use setup.exe.

General :: Rescuing Windows Vista As Well As Fedora Through Bootable USB

Jun 1, 2010

My system was a dual-boot with Windows Vista and Fedora 9. During the installation of some updates of Windows vista I powered off the system and since then my Windows Vista gives blue death screen error. I think it as some MBR corruption issue for which I have searched these corrective steps:

Step 1:1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Startup Repair.
7. Restart the computer.

Step 2: use bootrec.exe to fix MRB and BOOT
1. Put the Windows Server 2008 installation disc in the disc drive(you can use Windows Vista installation disc too), and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer, and then click Next.
5. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
6. Type bootrec /fixmbr, and then press ENTER.
7. Type bootrec /fixboot, and then press Enter.
8. Restart the computer.

My DVD-ROM does not detect any media I insert into it. So I have created a Windows Vista's USB installation media. My Problem: At present Fedora boots normally. But when I will fix MBR, what will happen to fedora ? If it removes the grub, I will not be able to boot in fedora. Please suggest something. I think there must be a way to install grub through USB, but I don't know the 'howtos' of that.

Fedora Installation :: Configuring Grub To Work With MS Windows 7 And XP?

Mar 18, 2010

I didn't get any responses to my question yesterday about grub with multiple disks

By "best," I don't mean with the most technical detail about each and every option. Instead, I'm looking for a guide that provides a step-by-step instructions about how to do some of the more common tasks, e.g.: configuring grub to work with MS Windows 7 and XP how to reinstall the MBR with grub after MS Windows' install program overwrites the MBR reinstalling the MBR from Fedora's LiveCD (without going through the whole install process) because I can't boot to my hard drive. configuring grub to work with multiple OS on separate hard drives

Again, I'm looking for a guide that starts with the basics about how to create a configuration file and write it to the MBR.

Fedora Installation :: Doesn't Work - Goes Straight To The Windows XP Login?

Aug 17, 2011

I burned Fedora onto a disk, but when I turn on the system it just goes straight to the Windows XP login.

I thought it was something wrong with the disk or something like that, but when I pop in the disk on my Dad's laptop, the installation for Fedora runs perfectly.

Also, yes, I checked the order for booting and the CD drive comes before the hard drive.

Fedora Installation :: Turning *.iso Into A Bootable CD?

Feb 27, 2009

I downloaded the *.iso for a Fedora 10 Live KDE installation. It is currently on my hard drive. I tried burning it to a CD with Roxio using two different methods. The first one was not a bootable method. So I checked the Roxio documentation and burned the image that way. In burning an *.iso to a bootable image on a disc, Roxio asks for three different file types, none of which are *.iso. I selected my *.iso because that was all I had. Then I burned it as a bootable to a CD.

When I tried to boot it, I got a black screen with a message at the top left reading something like there was no operating system available. I thought that was strange, and I do not know what to do.

Fedora Installation :: Can't Create Bootable DVD For F13

May 27, 2010

I've successfully created bootable DVDs for several distros over the years. First, I downloaded F13 x86-64 the day of the release, checked the sha256sum against the CHECKSUM file (it passed), and burned a DVD. I see 5 folders and 10 files on it, as expected.I restart, and my PC (AMD Phenom 9600 quad, Gigabyte S Series GA MA69G-S3H motherboard) does not boot from the DVD, but from the hard drive. So I get into the bios, check to make sure that the boot order is correct (it is) and try again. No joy.

Next, I assume I screwed up, had a bad burn, down load and burn again, checking everything. Still won't boot from DVD. Try getting the ISO from torrents, (checking sha256sum all the while), burn my 3rd DVD (using Brasero this time) and - same problem. Now I assume I have a hardware problem, and for grins, put in the F12 ISO DVD. It boots from there just fine.So I don't have a hardware problem, and I seem to have 3 good burns, but it's not recognized as a bootable DVD.

I need to install fedora on my new 16 DELL servers. I will doing it through DRAC (Dell remote access console) but DRAC can mount only one ISO at a time. I am planning to do multiple installations at the same time.hence i need multiple boot.iso files for each and every DRAC console that I open for each server. The question is...How to extract just the bootable part from the fedora DVD? I don't whether it should be called boot.iso, but I hope you get my point.I believe it has got something to do with the "isolinux" folder on the DVD, but I don't know what and how.

Fedora Installation :: Create Bootable HDD From F11 Live CD?

Oct 2, 2009

This is the first time that I try to install Fedora 11 to my Cd-driver-less notebook. I try to boot from my USB stick it did not work. For me, only feasible solution is to boot from HDD.

However, how do I create bootable HDD from Fedora 11 live CD? I have already downloaded and burnt Fedora-11-i686-Live.iso to a CD. Since I cannot boot from my CD, I need to boot from the HDD. But how?

Also some additional info: I have already formatted my notebook's HDD by hooking it to my PC. So I can only access my notebook's HDD from my PC (winXP installed) As far as I can guess, I need to partition and format my notebook's HDD based on fedora's requirements. (I do not know how?) And copy some boot and installation files to these partitioned disks. (don't know neither)

Fedora Installation :: F12 - Creating Bootable CDs (DVDs)

Apr 23, 2010

I downloaded 64-bit fedora12 iso DVD image and created a DVD. When I tried to boot, the CD does not boot. I checked the documentation to see whether book.iso or any other file needs to be copied along with. My question is:

- What are the files I need to copy to a DVD for the DVD to boot up straight up from the DVD...?
- If not, is there another way to get this fresh installation done.

I have 32-bit Fedora 11 installed in a machine, but need 64-Fedora to do some testing, before going with RH Linux.

Now, what to do? I also didn't get the line the tutorial saying, "You should now have a bootable USB stick which will run an 15 install. When you boot the stick, you may also add askmethod to the boot line and select a hard drive install and select the drive as /dev/sdb1 (or your USB device drive) and the path should be / " What am I supposed to do?

Is it do to the usb key or machines that do not load mbr the same way?

Edit: the stick is formated with MBR have 2 partitions. The first is FAT32 and active, second is ext3

PCs i have tested can boot on USB (at leat you can select a USB device for Boot)

General :: Recover To Bootable Windows?

Mar 6, 2011

Have following problem:

Computer has 3 partitions: windows swap, windows recovery, and 3rd, which currently has linux.

There is grub installed, which lets me choose to run windows recovery, or linux. Both boot fine.

But. I'd like to remove Linux, and use recovery to install windows. When I boot to recovery, and make it install windows, it does so, but after rebooting all I get is:

error: no such partition
grub rescue>

ls shows 3 msdos partitions, but I don't know what to do with it further.

When I did boot Linux rescue, and overwrote first 446 bytes of /dev/sda to remove grub - computer doesn't boot at all.

I do not have any bootable windows disks, just the rescue. I do have another computer I can work on, so I can download stuff from internet if it would help me.
