Apr 22, 2010Just loaded Squeeze (KDE) onto a partition on my desktop and am a bit alarmed by the disk thrashing thats going on? Damn light on constantly. if I didn't know better I'd think I was using Vista. Is this something to do with 'nepomukservices' that seems to be taking a fair amount of cpu time? Not used to KDE 4 so maybe this is normal.

Jan 7, 2011I'm having trouble getting Ubuntu installed on my desktop, I'm trying to get a dual boot going with Windows 7.
The Windows 7 install was fine and the OS is working with no problems at all. But when I try and install Ubuntu, the installer can't see any hard disks on the system. The first screen is OK where it checks for available disk space, but on the following screen there are no disks listed.
I can boot into the Live CD with no problems, and I can see the disk and create partitions with GParted, but when I go back into the install it can't see them. fdisk -l can see them as well code...
I tried using the all_generic_ide option as well because I saw that in another post but it didn't help. I'm not really sure where to go from here, I've looked in the BIOS and there's very few options relating to the HDD, and none of them seem relevant. There's no RAID configuration or anything weird like that.
The machine is an AMD 64 with a Gigabyte GA-K8N-SLI motherboard. The HDD is a 250GB SATA2. The disk seems fine, and I've verified the install DVD as well, it seems to be OK (I tried both the 32 and 64 bit installers).

For PCLOS I use an On-Disk set of disks which I have installed on a separate hard disk which serves as a repository from Synaptic, which makes program install/remove very quick. Is it possible to do the same thing with the 5 DVD's for Debian lenny on another hard disk?

May 8, 2011I have been frustrated attempting to get Grub2 to boot a Debian Live system from hard disk. Have set aside a 4gb partition /dev/sda1 to contain the Debian Live and some other recovery tools. I actually have them all working from a 4gb USB stick successfully, but getting it to work on my HDD has proved challenging. On USB, I have PartedMagic, Gparted, Grml, and of course my standard 6.01 Squeeze. I have also managed to get the Debian Live booting from that USB stick. Very slick.
However, I can NOT get Debian Live to boot from my HDD; altho all of the others above boot fine. Have tried it two ways - one using an iSO image, which is how it is done on my USB stick. The other attempt is to copy the entire contents of the ISO to a directory.
Here are my directory structures:
debian_live_gnome_squeeze_i386- contains the following: debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso initrd.gz initrd.img vmlinuz which is how it is laid out on my USB stick debian_live - contains the files from the ISO image The error I get is something like "panic unable to find live filesystem" My grub.cfg snippet for the two methods I have tried - the 2nd menuentry is similar to how it works on the USB stick.

Probly don't really need to get it working since PartedMagic can do almost everything I need for recovery and I can use the USB for reinstall or whatever else.

1.down the iso:ubuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386.iso file from ubuntun.com
2.down the unetbootin-win-549.exe and write the iso file to my USB disk
3.reboot my system to boot from usb disk
4.as i expect, every thing goes well util i got the err like this:

Apr 20, 2011Having trouble installing 'Squeeze' 6.0.1a-amd64-netinst on a new AMD64 system.The installer boots and runs fine until it gets to hard disk detection. Then it hangs for about 20 minutes showing a blue screen, during which time the HDD-activity light flickers every 5 seconds. Eventually it says it can't detect a hard disk, and displays a (longish) list of possible drivers; no idea which, if any, would suit.Anyone else installed (successfully or otherwise) on this combo?

May 2, 2011My backup hard disk is connected by USB cable. After I installed Ubuntu 11.04 the disk had been wiped and a version of Ubuntu installed on it.I had forgotten to disconnect the external disk's usb cable before running the install in case something like this happened.I then just took whatever the installer said regarding partitions: I trusted it;and the installer's manual partition manager is a little too technical to be user-friendly. Mostly, I just trusted the automated partition manager to be making the right decisions for me.
The installer's auto-partition manager said it was erasing two partitions. I thought, oh that must include some sort of swap drive then.The auto-partition manager said it was using 500Gb of space. I thought, well there's more HD space on my desktop than I thought.I recently acquired the machine. It was a hand-down.The installer said do you want to install Ubuntu with, over or beside whatever existing versions there are. I said, over. I wanted a clean install since my attempt at making Ubuntu do an upgrade install had already failed. This was clearly stupid of me. But it was not as stupid as issuing an O/S installer that did what this one did.
The installer completely wiped my external usb backup drive. Not only that, but it installed another instance of Ubuntu on it. The install routine actually installed two instances of Ubuntu 11.04: one on my local HD and one on my now erased external HD.Just to rub salt in the wound, the update manager only updates the version that's running: the version on my internal HD. The version the installer copied over my backup data is redundant.I have fortunately a second backup of most essential data. But the external HD contained data that was not copied elsewhere. It has been permanently erased. It will probably possible to retrieve this data from original sources at a considerable inconvenience. I do not know at this time whether and how much of the data that was erased is now lost forever and what the consequences of the loss would mean.

Mar 10, 2010I down loaded Debian 5.0.4 and burned it to CD (several times I might add till it was right) and now the computer I'm putting it on wont acknowledge it as a boot disk and load. It does not have a problem with my windows cd, which has a crack and the start of all my problems, But not the Debian CD-1 disk. what now? The computer is an IBM thinkpad a22p. Everything works as far as I can tell. But I was going to reinstall Windows and failed in that because of a small crack on the edge of the disk that stopped the install and any hope of accessing the file on the laptop. Microsoft does not support windows xp any longer, you must buy windows 7, but the ibm will not run it due to processor speed and ram limitations. But it will run linux and I'm willing to try it just to get out of microsoft control.

When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down. Instead I rebooted.The hard disk with the problem is:

Jan 6, 2011I'm banging my head against the wall as I can't find a way to install the contents of the CD-26 image of Debian. I've downloaded the files and then burnt it to disk and Debian can see the disk as an ISO format, but I have no idea how to extract/install the files so that I can then use aptitude to load the program I want.
I've searched Google and it talks about Debian Installer, but I haven't got that (I don't think), and the CD doesn't load automatically at start up (even though the BIOS is configured to Boot from the CD drive first).
How to I install these other packages?

One more thing I have 16 gig flash drive and on debian and debian based distros i can only use 13.1 gigs of it but on fedora I can use all 16 gigs.

Oct 24, 2015I am trying to install Debian onto an IBM ThinkPad 240X. The 240X will only boot from either an internal IDE hard-drive, or an external floppy-drive. For now, I have decided to ignore the option of using the floppy drive. I have other computers to support the process, an IBM ThinkPad T43p (Pentium M) as well as my primary laptop, a ThinkPad X200s (Core2 Duo). I have tried installing the hard-drive to be used into the T43p, then booting the Debian NetInstall from a USB thumb-drive, installing as usual, then transferring the hard-drive into the 240X. This does not completely work; GRUB and LILO will load, but the computer freezes very early (almost immediately) in the boot process.
Please note, I am trying this on a CF card. The 240X has an IDE-CF adapter, and my X200s has a USB-CF reader.So, I want to try to load the actual Debian Net Install on the 240X. Ideally, it will happen something like this; I will partition the hard-drive into these 2 partitions:
sda1: the Debian Net Installer
sda2: an empty partition waiting to have Debian installed onto it URL...
but the part I do not understand is how to get GRUB or LILO installed onto the CF card. I am wary of running commands such as "grub-install" as I do not want to mess up my GRUB install on the computers this command would be run from. If I run a command such as this, I would want it to ingore everything about the computer it is being run from, and only modify files or install onto the CF card. I would not want it to acknowledge the computer it is being run from as far as available installs, architecture, etc.

I want to install debian 6.0 squeeze on to both of my hard drives and run each as a seperate instance of debian, and be able to choose at boot up which one I want to run. I have an HP with 2 500 gig hard drives, running windows vista currently, processor is an intell quad 2 core 6600, nothing else on the pc for programs and such at this time. I would also like to keep the windows if possible to run other programs at a later time.

Debian Installation :: Partition Disk Stuck At 50% During Install
Mar 10, 2013I have tried to install Debian from various .iso files over the last couple of days. However, the installations always get stuck on "Partition disks" section. On the screen, the progress bar for "Starting up the partitioner" keep getting stuck at 50%, and refuses to progress further. I understand that it might take a little time to scan the hard drive, so as an experiment, I left it on over night. However, it is still stuck there when I woke up 6 hours later.
