Fedora Installation :: How To Go Back To F14 From F15
Jun 9, 2011
I'm sure there has to be a way. F15 is a total nightmare on my system. Everything I try to do causes a crash. I HATE the gnome 3 desktop. Can someone kindly show me the door back into the happy land of Fedora version 14?

I've had the same Fedora server (filewise) since it was RedHat, but I'm getting major issues with an open Bugzilla report and I'm considering a brand new install.
The thing is - I've had files on this server since 1999, really, with personalized settings and everything in between.
Is there any easy way to start a fresh install (on a brand new hard drive) and migrate my files over? Otherwise, how does one do a fresh install without losing files and programs they've been painstakingly been trying to maintain for an entire decade?
I don't even know how to install half of this stuff anymore. The computer was on autopilot for the better half of the last 10 years.
Is there an easy way to back up settings and restore them?

I have just installed Fedora 14 on a machine which already has Windows XP on one hard drive and Ubuntu 10.10 on another. Fedora was supposed to be installed alongside Ubuntu
The installation appeared to be successful in that the process came to a natural end and I was told to reboot. However on rebooting I found that the boot menu did not contain an option to choose Fedora and was the same as it had been before I installed Fedora.
I opted to boot Ubuntu and then opened a terminal and typed 'sudo update-grub' and got a message to the effect that grub.conf was being created. When I rebooted again, there was still no sign of Fedora.
Is there any way of getting Fedora to boot? I am not sufficiently experienced in Linux to try anything else as the computer that I am using is not mine and I don't want to wreck the data of the owner. I did do 'sudo fdisk -l' whilst booted in Ubuntu and I saw that there are Linux partitions on both hard drives but I don't know how to tell which is Ubuntu and which is Fedora

I am having to get off UBUNTU cause flash runs HORRIBLY.. I can log on to facebook and open apps and FF 3.0.18 almost comes to a hault same thing for ..... the video lags anyways, someone on another Linux forum im on said try FEDORA. well what if I have windows XP and lets say FEDORA isnt for me.. how do I reset the bootloader back to XP'S will it do like UBUNTU and say ok XP'S bootloader is on SDA2 so this is where I need to go so when I run the XP recovery cd, I can FIXBOOT FIXMBR then its restored back to XP's then just go in and delete the partition
I ask cause, I got really screwed by suse... It put my boot loader on ANOTHER partition instead of finding XP'S and basically was locked out and had to reinstall windows cause I had no clue how to link it back up to the partition that XP was on, because I had no clue it was put somewhere else. I was so mad.

How to bring Desktop back again on Fedora 15. We have developed an application that places some shortcuts on Desktop. With Desktop disappearing in Fedora 15, those shortcuts will become useless. Can we shorten the learning process in Gnome 3?

I'm trying to boot off of the Fedora 13 ISO disc... After the splash screen my monitor kicks into stand-by and never comes back on..
It doesn't happen when I boot off the hard drive into Windows Vista
It doesn't happen with my Back Track 3.0 Live disc either.
I tried switching from my video card to onboard video in cmos, but no good.
I tried removing the video card and plugging directly into the onboard video, but no good.
I tried starting with only one ram module at a time, no good.
I tried removing all other peripherals, no good.
I actually tried using another monitor too, but no good.
I tried booting the disc from a different drive as well, same thing.. code...

I thought it would be cool and easy to install Windows 7, ended up being a headache and worthless so far. Now I only have the windows bootloader with vista and windows 7 as options. How can I get grub going again? I have all 6 fedore core 10 cds and a live cd in case those will help, I am using the live cd to play in fedora right now, but I am not sure how to get access to grub.conf and what to change in it, because I am pretty sure I have to add Windows 7 to it.

After installing Fedora 12 from a live CD, I ended up that my Vista completly gone is.
In the grub loader, I cannot see my Vista boot record.
I thought when installing, I choose 'use free space', as there I reservered 7 gigabyte for Fedora.
I can see all the files including my Windows directories and home.
Is there a possibility that I can recover my Vista? and so, make it dual boot?

I have an older PC that was running F11 without any problems. At some point I started updating to F12 through the web and got a a nice black screen that pretty much hosed my OS. (Not a big deal). So I went and downloaded the F12 Live CD which did the same thing.., at some point just after install the screen would be black and reset is the only option.Got the full F12 32-bit DVD and during the installation I get: "X Startup Failed,Falling back to text mode."Finishing the install I get to a nice black log-in prompt so I can log-in as root. From there I cant do much as I am a n00d in Linux to some extent and my network doesn't work
My video card is a Geforce FX 5200 which installed and worked just fine under F11 (without me doing anything but basic install and Ubuntu 9.10)

Sometimes you get more than you ask for and in this case, I did: I had no idea (had the computer for a few years now) that I was running a dual core 64 bit machine. The silly thing is that I have 32bit Fedora 11 on it, 32 bit versions of all my installed software...etc., etc. Am I able at this point to salvage anything or is it best to just back up the home directory and then do a reinstall?

just built a computer and wanted to try out some linux.
First off I burned the Fedora 10 x86_64 disk image (using disk utility on my mac at 4x speed then verified it) to a dvd. I start the install. "x startup fails to load, falling back to text mode" comes up. I use the text install then. It gets to the actual installation of the different packages then a black screen shows up with white text that's highlighted red (sometimes it's blue). It then freezes and I reboot. Sometimes it freezes at different points and with different messages, but the description above is what happens most often.
I try writing it at 1x speed and verifying. same thing.I try the Live CD. It freezes. Then I tried Fedora 9. same thing.
Next I go to Ubuntu 8.10.I try the regular install, but the orange loading bar freezes.I try the Live CD-like install. It runs!...but when i go to install, when it gets to the partitioning part, it freezes and becomes unresponsive.
Each time it froze I let it sit for about 10 minutes, just to make sure it is in fact frozen. I've tried these installs numerous times.

I have never had to do this before But I'm giving my laptop to my mother when my new one arrives and I need to remove the ubuntu installation and get the disk space back.
A few months ago the install stopped working. I can't remember what the error said... and tbh I can't be bothered to reboot twice to read it, but it has to be removed now anyways.
Had a look in windows to see if I can do anything in the disk manager, but it appears I can't. Oh wise ones, please, which path should one take?

I would like to post my problems here with Fedora 11 regarding that I am using Dell inspiron 1525, Dual core-N series. I have got two problems:
First;- After I updated my system, I have experienced a a login problem , which is each time I try to login and insert my password correctly it seems that it will login but it comes back to the same login screen as if I did not do anything, but after too many times it works.
Second: I read some posts in a website that talks about configuring the RPM fusion "Repo" and I did all the steps posted there , but after that whenever I try to update or download anything through terminal.... it appears the following:

The computer I am using now for whatever reason, like picking a lottery number likes to either freeze or reboot for no reason that I can ascertain with any predictability.
I was in the middle of the Ubuntu install when my computer rebooted.
I have a 250GB HD and selected the 1st option side by side with XP. I slid the slider to give XP around 80GB and Ubuntu the rest.
The installation was going great (nice job on the installation program btw; I can tell lots of people worked very hard on this) and I was at the 85% mark when the computer decided to do its nasty little thing and rebooted.
Does anyone know from the OS internals during the installation process what is happening at the last 15% of the install? I have not shut my machine down or changed the BIOS from booting with the CD. So at this moment that I am writing this I am not sure what has happened. I am hoping that it did not clobber the MBR. If I can't get into XP any more that would be less than enchanting.
The machine came back up and booted off the CD and I proceeded to go through the installation process again to complete the installation process.
Now its trying to install another copy of itself because it senses that there is two Operating Systems on my hard drive. This is understandable. How would the installation program know that the machine died. Much of the OS had been written already so the installer "sees" two OS's.
Currently, I have a situation where I now have two smaller partitions; one used by XP and the other one that contains this incomplete installation (I am actually working within Ubuntu right now) and aother partition that is empty.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Is it possible to just tar /home, /opt, and a couple other directories, and then save them on some medium, so that when doing a fresh install, I could just extract the folders from the tar file and keep my information?
I don't plan on doing daily/weekly backups, but I want a copy of some folders so that I can keep as many of my settings as possible in case I need to do a fresh install.
I also don't have the ability to create another partition on my hard drive to be able to put /home on it.. but yes, I looked into that route, as well.
