Ubuntu Installation :: Back Up Directories ?

Jan 19, 2010

Is it possible to just tar /home, /opt, and a couple other directories, and then save them on some medium, so that when doing a fresh install, I could just extract the folders from the tar file and keep my information?

I don't plan on doing daily/weekly backups, but I want a copy of some folders so that I can keep as many of my settings as possible in case I need to do a fresh install.

I also don't have the ability to create another partition on my hard drive to be able to put /home on it.. but yes, I looked into that route, as well.

Ubuntu :: What Directories To *not* Back Up ?

Apr 8, 2011

I back up using a small rsync script. I've tried other methods but just keep coming back to it.

I have enough space that I can back up the entire root file system, but for speed and economy there are certain folders I'm not backing up. I understand some are dynamically generated on boot, others are caches.

Anything else I should exclude? How about APT's cache? /var? Any other caches?

General :: Back Up Scrip - Find / Cp / Md5sum / Rm - Move All Files And Directories

Oct 22, 2010

I want to move all files and directories that are 1 month old out to back up into a separate folder. There will be a lot of files and I want to make sure it copies properly. The problem I'm having is integrating a MD5SUM into it to check integrity. MD5SUM is not recursive, so I figured it would work in a loop when it copies each individual file, I'll do a md5sum on each file and delete that md5 once its verified it copied ok.

[Code]...

I also need some sort of error handling to output all md5's that didnt pass the hash check.

General :: Multiple Users To Create Directories Over SFTP So The New Directories Keep The Same Permissions?

May 15, 2011

I want to make a webserver with multiple users allowed to login through SFTP to a specific folder, www.Multiple users are added, lets say user1 and user2, and all of them belonging to the www-data group. The www directory has an owner www-data and a group www-data.

I have used chmod -R 775 on the www folder, but after I try to create a folder test through my SFTP server (using Filezilla) the group of the directory created has only r and x permissions, and I am not able to log in with the second user user2 and create a directory within www/test due to a lack of w permission to the group.

I also tried using chmod 2775 on www directory, but without luck. Can somebody explain to me, how can I make it so that a newly created directory inherits the root directory group permissions?

Ubuntu Installation :: System Directories On Separate Partitions - Redo All From Scratch

Feb 23, 2010

I have a netbook with limited storage. 8GB internal and a 16GB SD card. Right now I have Ubuntu installed on the 8GB internal storage with a few directories mounted on the 16GB SD card. (/usr and /usr/local). This has worked out fairly well for me as having the entire installation on just the 8GB drive was too limiting. When I tried this I didn't know how big to make the partitions I was mounting in. These partitions are 7.06GB for the root (on internal storage) 2.8GB for /usr/local and another 2.8GB for /usr (both 2.8GB partitions are on the 16GB SD with the extra space being media storage for me). It seems I didn't make these partitions big enough because I can no longer perform updates. I'd like to redo all of this from scratch. how would you recommend I partition this next time around? Do I need individual partitions for the separate mount points that aren't root? Are those the directories I should be mounting on the SD card?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Upgrade To 10.4 0 Free Disk Space By Symlink System Directories?

Apr 30, 2010

I cannot upgrade to 10.4, because my EEE 901 has a too small "system disk", 4GB. However, I do have enough space on my slower 16GB SSD disk. Can I move some recommended system directory there temporarily and symlink from the root disk? Would the upgrade data itself be a good candidate, perhaps? The work around would be to do a clean install of the new version, but I rather not, as I have some tweaking to do afterwards in that case. As it is now, I have 700MB of free space, and need about 1.4GB, if I'm not mistaken.

A few months ago the install stopped working. I can't remember what the error said... and tbh I can't be bothered to reboot twice to read it, but it has to be removed now anyways.

Had a look in windows to see if I can do anything in the disk manager, but it appears I can't. Oh wise ones, please, which path should one take?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installation Died / Roll It Back?

Jan 13, 2010

The computer I am using now for whatever reason, like picking a lottery number likes to either freeze or reboot for no reason that I can ascertain with any predictability.

I was in the middle of the Ubuntu install when my computer rebooted.

I have a 250GB HD and selected the 1st option side by side with XP. I slid the slider to give XP around 80GB and Ubuntu the rest.

The installation was going great (nice job on the installation program btw; I can tell lots of people worked very hard on this) and I was at the 85% mark when the computer decided to do its nasty little thing and rebooted.

Does anyone know from the OS internals during the installation process what is happening at the last 15% of the install? I have not shut my machine down or changed the BIOS from booting with the CD. So at this moment that I am writing this I am not sure what has happened. I am hoping that it did not clobber the MBR. If I can't get into XP any more that would be less than enchanting.

The machine came back up and booted off the CD and I proceeded to go through the installation process again to complete the installation process.

Now its trying to install another copy of itself because it senses that there is two Operating Systems on my hard drive. This is understandable. How would the installation program know that the machine died. Much of the OS had been written already so the installer "sees" two OS's.

Currently, I have a situation where I now have two smaller partitions; one used by XP and the other one that contains this incomplete installation (I am actually working within Ubuntu right now) and aother partition that is empty.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Fedora Installation :: Installation Migration - Back Up Personalized Files ?

Nov 9, 2009

I've had the same Fedora server (filewise) since it was RedHat, but I'm getting major issues with an open Bugzilla report and I'm considering a brand new install.

The thing is - I've had files on this server since 1999, really, with personalized settings and everything in between.

Is there any easy way to start a fresh install (on a brand new hard drive) and migrate my files over? Otherwise, how does one do a fresh install without losing files and programs they've been painstakingly been trying to maintain for an entire decade?

I don't even know how to install half of this stuff anymore. The computer was on autopilot for the better half of the last 10 years.

Is there an easy way to back up settings and restore them?

Ubuntu Installation :: No GUI After Upgrade / Get That Back?

Apr 26, 2010

I ran an update about a week ago - I am not sure what update was but the update did not all the GUI to display.

Behavior:
Boot Sequence is okay but as soon as the nice Ubuntu image loads up usually the cool login GUI shows up after but instead I get a constant blinking console for a login.

FINALLY:
I couldn't figure out what it was through logs and I didn't make a restore point so I took my info of the hard-drive and re-installed Ubuntu.

NOW:
I ran into this problem again but this time I did not update anything. I had to log out of my account to switch monitors BUT I had Ubuntu set to automatically log my user name in when my finishes booting up (some option that is use-full). So now it is back to the constant blinking login console.

so what I got now is:
1) my computer automatically load my user name up
2) Switched monitors so I had to log off
3) After Logging Off I got a constant login console NOT GUI blinking like mad.
4) Tried rebooting and the issue still remains

Ubuntu Installation :: Back To 10.04... The Crash Of 10.10?

Luckily I have a testing (dirty) laptop to try new OS's. With every new issue of Ubuntu I have had issues which usually take about a week to stabilize. As was with 10.04 which I had running perfectly in no time. But, as of date, 10.10 has been the worst. This time it simply crashed. After updating I ran 10.10 through some paces which looked OK. Then I went to settings manager, appearance, style, and tried a few new looks when after choosing a particular style the screen went black, and I wound up at my login. After I logged in it simply went black again, and back to login.

Ubuntu Installation :: Downgrade Back From 10.04 LTS To 8.04 LTS?

I upgraded from ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04 LTS using the update manager and the result is that ubuntu boots into a black screen. Unfortunately I did not test 10.4 before with the Desktop CD, which I tried now, with the same result: black screen. So most likely a hardware screen card issue... which I did really not expect since 8.04 was running very well and the update was coming from the update mananger. Never change a running system. I assume my only chance is to re-install version 8.04 with the iso CD. But before doing so, is there any must-not to keep an eye on?

Ubuntu Installation :: Going Back To Windows 7 Only?

Dec 2, 2010

I was able to install Lucid Lynx 64-bit. I selected manual partitioning which I completed without complication.

I encountered several problems after installation:

I could not use my Radeon HD 5870 graphics card. Whenever I enabled it in the BIOS, the monitor would go to "sleep." When it was disabled and the onboard 4200 graphics card was used, everything was normal. Of course, this meant that I could not enjoy my PC gaming.

Next, I could not connect to the internet.

I searched for solutions and found one [here]. After I performed this procedure, I activated the ATI proprietary driver. I also had internet! Everything seemed great. I was about to enjoy the fruits of my labor.

When I rebooted and went to Windows to make sure everything was good on that end, I got the...wait for it...waaait for it...blue screen of death.

That's where I'm at. I'm extremely hesitant to do anything else at this point for fear of not being able to use Windows altogether (I need it for school). However, during the school break, I plan to re-format the HD because I don't see any possible solution to the BSOD. Using the Windows recovery disk availed nothing whatsoever.

Furthermore, since I don't have an actual Windows CD, and my recovery disk is not doing jack, that means I will be buying a Windows 7 Home Premium disc for $175. I wasn't expecting that when I installed Ubuntu. =(

I guess what I need to know is whether I can re-format my HD to the way it was pre-Ubuntu. That means, will I be able to delete the Ubuntu partitions?

Next, is there somewhere where the Ubuntu gurus go to learn all "sudo" codes? I know there are quite a few books out there on Ubuntu and Linux, but where does everyone get their knowledge? With Windows, you can go to the website tutorial or Microsoft itself. The only vast field of knowledge I've seen with Ubuntu is this forum and perhaps Linux forum, in addition to the books. I guess that's relatively equivalent, but I don't know, I guess I'm just disconcerted because I find myself plugging in codes which I am not familiar with.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get Windows Back

Jan 11, 2011

I installed ubuntu for the first time, but then I used to get two boot options, "ubuntu" or "windows". So I loaded up windows and after googling a few things, managed to set ubuntu as the default option by going to system settings in windows and changing the boot options.

I am totally regretting this now, but I set the time limit to zero (ie load ubuntu without prompt) and now I can't get windows back? I have installed startup manager but the windows option on there "windows loader" does not work and does not bring it back (the screen stays blank until I have to restart).
