I have internet on my ubuntu machine (eth0) I am sharing with (eth1) My windows computers are getting IP addresses via DHCP from the Ubuntu Machine, and I can see (and use) samba/windows shares on all computers. Internet connection is not working on any of the windows computers.
I have eth1 set to "shared to other computers" under the IPv4 settings
i have two machines both on ubuntu 10.4 connected to a network via port switcher, 2 rj45 network cables auto eth0 is setup to share with other computers, i can ssh in and out of both, so the network is all running but i want to know how to share my single dongle internet connection between the 2 computers

My Intended Setup is as follows;
The Problem: So far I've not been able to get an internet connection from any computer connected to the HUB. I currenty have Fedora 13 on PC1 but have also tried with both Ubuntu 10.04 & Debian Lenny. I am open to using any Linux based distro on PC1 as long it has a Gnome Desktop. eth0 on PC1 can be Static or Dhcp, but I would prefer to set Static IPs on eth1 & all of the Client PCs

Thus Far I can't ping 192.168.XXX.103 from PC1 & I can't ping 192.168.XXX.101 from PC2. (unreachable) I have an internet connection on PC1 (of course)
I would like to set up a remote desktop connection between two computers over the Internet. I already tested remote desktop within a local network but it's far from secure enough this time. I will try to follow this guide [URL] (ssh portforward and internet). This still leaves ufw and how it should be configured. Let's say I have this setup, server computer has ip 12.341.245.124 and the client has 78.12.543.234 how should ufw be configured to be secure? This remote desktop wont be connected to a local network
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to create a PAN (Personal Area Network) using a laptop (Siragon ML-1040) and my desktop computer, but I get the Connection Refused (111) error.
Blueman doesn't detect any network service between the two computers unless I start PAND on one of them and then it detects the NAP service. That, only after I enable the NAP/Workgroup services on the Services submenu in Blueman. However, it doesn't work neither with the NM plugins or without them (dhclient and that other one I can't remember the name of).
Any clues over here? I'm using pand 4.91 and blueman.
After installing UNR onto my dell mini 9 and downloading the correct drivers to enable wireless internet (using this site: [URL]), I decided to load ubuntu onto my brothers netbook. After the installation completed, I went to do complete the steps listed in the above article, however I was unable to connect to the internet using an ethernet wire.

I somehow managed to find the network settings and it shows no connections, wired or wireless. When I log out and log back in with gnome, my wireless gets connected automatically.
I'm using a WUSB54GC network adapter to connect to my home wireless network. My network was not visible, so I added it and it shows connected, but when I launch the browser, I can't get a connection. I'm using Ubuntu 10.4. All other computers on the network connect fine and I disabled my firewall to see if that made a difference.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi have an evdo connection with which i connect to the internet. i have been trying to share this connection for quite a few days from my lucid machine to a windows 7 pc but have failed. i have tried dhcp3-server, firestarter, network manager's built in capabilities but have failed! today i manually configured da windows 7 pc to an ip address within da range which network manager ws assigning when 'shared to other computers' ws selected and it worked! Now da question is how do i do it automatically? dhcp3-server never starts, it always fails with the error 'not configured to listen' or sumthng like it! Plus i want the wireless of my laptop to make an ad hoc connection to my mobile fone, which is also no possible...i think its some problem with da dhcp server.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to share the internet connection of my Windows XP Virtual Machine (virtualbox) to Ubuntu. I know it sounds weird, but what happens is that i'm using a 3G modem to connect to the internet and 3G connections are still very unstable with ubuntu's network manager. Fortunately, the modem works a lot better with my Virtual Machine. I have already set up a "host only" network between my Windows XP guest and my Ubuntu host and i can they can ping each other but i still can't share the connection of my virtual machine. I already selected "share this connection" on win xp but i think i still have to configure something on ubuntu for it to work. The interface Ubuntu uses is vboxnet0 (not eth0).
This is the last thing to do before i can get rid of my Windows XP partition
configuring Internet Connection Sharing from my Ubuntu 10.10 machine to a Windows XP machine. I've seen How To's but they didn't work, yet.
The Ubuntu machine connects to the Internet through a DSL USB modem that required packages not provided with the distribution, and specific instructions to configure it; so getting Internet working alone was difficult. As a result, I don't even use Network Manager, rather connect using the command pppoe-start. The machine is connected to the Windows PC through a simple cable, through the Ethernet card.
Some tutorials I've seen on ICS are for machines with two Ethernet cards, or for wireless connections; but I've seen none for a USB modem. However I once found one, years ago, and it worked, but I couldn't find it now. It was using iptables, and I didn't really understand what I was doing, but it worked. But then I had to format the disk, and now I can't find a way to get it working again.
I bought a new Laptop 2 week ago. It works well, but internet connection ist very slow. I use cable internet speed 25Mbit/s, normal with my old Laptop (Window xp) I can DL with speeds ca.1 Mbit/s but with this new ca. 15 kbit/s (same file). too much different!!! If anyone know, how to troubleshoot this problem, please tell me. And i get a advice that i should crate a new connection using the "workgroup" model instead. I've tried to do but failed. Who knows "how to" please explain it for me.
View 3 Replies View RelatedEver since my BT Hub 2 has updated a few weeks ago I'm unable to connect to the internet either wireless or wired. I duel boot on my netbook with xp and duel boot my desktop PC with windows 7. None of the Ubuntu�s are able to connect, I have no problems with the windows side of things.
Has anyone any ideas on how to fix this until BT decide to fix the problem. Preferably a step to step guide as I have limited experience with Ubuntu. I�m using Ubuntu 11.04.
I am trying to get a NetGear WNDA3100 working on another computer with ubuntu. I've searched and searched, but all the threads and answers say to install some ndiswrapper thing. One problem with that though- the desktop doesn't have any adapters at all, I'm trying to install the WNDA3100 just to get internet in the first place. I have no internet, cannot download and install anything, and I can't use any apps or commands that don't come with the default Ubuntu 10.04. Please help me out here!
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.
I am fairly new on CentOS and am in the process of setting up a small home office network that shares Internet access through the Linux (CentOS) box.I have two network interface cards The Linux box is also the DHCP server. My challenge is to get the client machines to access the Internet! I have a PPP connection to the ISP. Essentially I followed these Instructions CENTOS REDHAT Internet Connection Sharing. Pretty straight forward but I am still not able to get clients to access the Internet. I defined the DNS server through DHCP (196.44.x.y). I assumed it has to do with default gateway and it is set as follows: on the Linx box the gateway is my ppp0 link. DHCP uses eth1 (LAN card) fixed IP as the gateway. All clients are reflecting this information. The firewall (iptables) is reflecting the FORWARDING and POSTROUTING rules as advised.
Is there a step I mioght have missed to get this working? I tried to Google but its not getting me far.
I have been trying off and on for weeks to share my Internet connection with a Windows XP client (netbook). While I can ping back and forth between the two machines, in the form of a ping test, I can't get to the Internet from the client, no matter what I try.
My Ubuntu 9.10 desktop (host) has two NICs, eth0 and eth1. eth0 connects to the Internet. eth1 goes to the Windows XP client. Regardless of whether I use an Ethernet crossover cable or a standard cable, I can get the two machines to talk to each other, but no further.
Things I already tried:
-Tried setting eth1 to "shared" mode in NetworkManager on the host. I set the Win XP machine to automatically acquire an address & DNS. Didn't work.
-Manually configured the IP settings on both machines, like this:

gateway 10.0.0.1

Despite all of the above, I still cannot share the host's Internet connection with the client. I don't understand where the client's traffic is going, and why I can't share the connection. As far as I know, I am not doing any sort of firewalling or blocking on the host, so there is no obvious reason that the client's traffic simply disappears. I just know that whenever I open a Web browser on the client, all I ever get is error messages.
I have had no issues setting up a shared connection when the host runs Windows XP, so I am pretty sure there is no broken hardware causing the problem. Why can't I share the connection under Ubuntu?
My friend is trying to share his clearwire connection with me using Windows ICS. Using network-manager or wicd, I am unable to connect to his share. I am able to connect unencrypted with iwconfig, to the ad-hoc network, and then use dhclient to gain ip address.
I am not able to connect to WPA encrypted share using network-manager or wicd. nm-applet crashes when trying to connect. I am attempting to setup wpa_supplicant, but haven't got it working yet.As usual, the wireless networking out of the box experience in Ubuntu doesn't work. This is extremely frustrating. If Ubunut's goals are to be the default desktop, then these guys need to get wifi that "Just Works"...
I wouldn't be posting this if I hadn't tried very hard for the past week to do this on my own, but alas, I failed. I have this two configurations:
Desktop:
- Ubuntu 9.10
- Connected to the internet though a wireless card
- Connected to "Laptop" via wired network with a crossover cable
Laptop:
- Dell latitude
- Ubuntu 9.10
- Connected to "Dektop" via wired network with a crossover cable
The wired connection is working, both computers are able to ping each other, but I haven't managed to share internet, nor files. I have tried many different ways, from setting the wired network to "Shared to other computers" to this guide in the Ubuntu Wiki. The best I could get was for the connection to work by setting the IPs manually, whatever else I try results in either nothing or in a not-working connection.
Over the last several days, I've been trying like hell to share my (wired) Internet connection with a netbook, running Windows XP, attached via crossover cable to my desktop's extra NIC (eth0). The eth0 link is established, but I can't get to the Internet from the Windows XP machine.I can ping one machine from the other, but any bits sent from the Win XP netbook mysteriously disappear when trying to reach any website.
There is no firewall running on the Ubuntu machine as far as I know. Windows Firewall is likewise disabled on the Windows XP machine. I installed Ubuntu (10.04) today and it has gone smoothly except for the fact that I can't connect to the Internet when in Ubuntu (connection works fine in Windows XP). I am using a wireless USB card (Linksys WUSB600N) to connect.
The weird thing is that the card detects all the local networks, asks me for a password to my network, and it even says it is connected to my network after I put the password in -- but when I open Firefox no pages will load.
There is another weird quirk as well: Ubuntu will not restart or shut down properly (it hangs around indefinitely with the little white / orange dots going across the screen) unless I first remove the wireless card from the USB slot. But that doesn't bother me as badly as the lack of Internet.
I am setting up a Beowulf Cluster using CentOS 5.5. I have the head node with two NIC devices eth0 and eth1. eth0 is the one that is connected to the WAN while eth1 provides the internal LAN connection. I am trying to configure internet connection sharing with the slave nodes on the network so that I can update/install software as needed via ssh sessions using yum. I have set up the master node with the requisite changes to iptables to enable IPv4 forwarding. From my slave nodes I can ping ip address from the terminal, but my domain name resolution is not working. i.e. if I ping [URL] it can not resolve, but if I ping 74.125.224.50 (one of google's IP's) I can communicate with the machine without a problem. I've been troubleshooting this problem for several hours now and I'm out of ideas. My internet connection is fine in Windows 7 but an older computer I resurrected (AMD Athlon 1.7 GHz, 512 MB RAM, Fedora 14 Security Lab Spin) is having the stop-and-go's with its internet connection. It will work for very briefly, then it gets extremely slow, where any page I try to navigate to in Firefox 3.6 takes forever to load.I have a DSL connection and my DSL modem is connected to a Linksys WRT54G2 router. I set up a static IP in Windows but don't know how to do this yet in Fedora 14, and I need to get my internet connection working so I can troubleshoot further, but with it being so slow, I'm having to use Windows to search for problems and then switch over to the Fedora box via KVM (IOGEAR), which I also just started using. I don't think that would be related, but who knows.

While using Ubuntu two other computers lose their connection. One (main) is connected to the modem, other from the switch to the wireless router, and the one with ubuntu wired via switch. Currently connected with Windows 7, other two are connected. Once booted into Ubuntu rest of the computers disconnect?

- to set proxy settings as "Direct internet connection"
- disconnecting power to (including 30 sec wait): modem, router, computer + unplugging ethernet from computer
- Live CD (he only had an old one 7.10) which also didn't connect to internet, but as I am remote, I couldn't do any more. We are downloading a 10.04.1 iso for him to burn tomorrow, and will try that again.
- Uninstalled Crashplan which was the last software that we installed (and it was working ok).
I am currently ssh'ing into another computer on the network that IS working, and then ssh'ing into my Dad's computer - including a VNC session (tunneled through both machines and router).
I have an old HP pavilion laptop (2005) that was useless.I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on it and it became a working computer again. It was excellent, snappy, it was as if I had bought a lower end modern laptop.Internet was working great.I did not have any complaints (in fact, I thought that a modern computer running Ubuntu would beat my so adored macbook, speed wise). For some time I had 2 efficient computer, a macbook and the hp with the Ubuntu OS. So on the last weekend of February, my internet got extremely slow on both computers. After that annoying weekend (February 28) the internet on my mac was good again,however, the internet on my linux continued to be messed up.I tried disabling IPv6 on my machine and on firefox, tried the openDNS, the MTU stuff, but nothing.I even formatted my disk and installed ubuntu again (all this using the installation CD).However, apparently the installation CD uses some of your existing configurations (for example, the layout of the close, minimize,maximize:menu buttons on the corner of windows did not go back to default). So I'm guessing whatever was messed up with the computer didn't change back to default or the previous configuration when I first installed ubuntu. To give you an idea of how slow the internet is, installing alien (terminal installation),I got low speeds of around 150B/s (no typo here, it was bites, not kilo bites) and the fastest around 5,000B/s. The fastest I got was downloading chrome at 6kB/s but that didn't last even a minute. So given that these transfer rates are obtained both on firefox and the terminal, I'm assuming it is not a browsing problem.
A thick headed solution, would probably be to install windows again to get the network configuration to "standard" and then install Ubuntu formatting the disk again (using the CD).I'm using ethernet,so,thinking it might be cable problems, I did try to use the cable that was on my mac on the machine with linux. No success there.
If I have a desktop with a USB wifi adapter connected to the internet through an ethernet cable, is it possible to create a wireless network using the adapter that will allow other users to connect to the internet through mine? I'm in a fairly low-tech place for the next few weeks and getting a router isn't likely.
If it's possible, anyone have links or instructions for how to do it?
