Fedora Installation :: Failing Installing Development Tools?

Mar 12, 2009

I installed Fedora 10 on an 8 GB USB-stick using the creator-software for windows. Sadly I am not so familiar with linux but as I am now trying Fedora on a friend's advice I really start to like it

Unfortunatels there ist a problem: I wanted to compile a driver for my wlan-card but got the known error "make: command not found". So I searched this forum and found in this thread that I need to install the development tools. But when I try to do so by typing yum groupinstall "Development Tools" it first starts but then cancels with an error message claiming missing dependencies to a perl package:

Quote:

Fehler: Fehlende Abhngigkeit: perl = 4:5.10.0-49.fc10 wird bentigt von Paket 1erl-Pod-Escapes-1.04-49.fc10.i386 (installed)

Due to my ignorance I tried yum install perl but this also fails with the same error message I am sure it is just a bite for you but I don't hava a clue right now By the way I already can call the command make install now for the wlan-card driver. It also starts but fails and says:

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 - Upgrade Vs Clean Install Regarding Development Tools

Apr 29, 2010

I currently run 9.10 and have / and /home mounted on different partitions. From what I understand, I can do a fresh install of 10.04 on / while preserving my settings on /home. What about the development tools? I currently have Apache web server, Tomcat, MySQL, PostgreSQL installed. I presume I will have to reinstall them if I do a fresh install right? So if I want to preserve these dev tools as they are I should only do an upgrade from the update manager? Are there any major advantages to a clean install over an upgrade?

General :: Win7 - Tools Required For Web Development Project

Jan 16, 2011

I wanted to design a project in linux which could contain programming languages(C, perl, PHP, HTML, XML etc) basically a web based project. Why I have chosen to build on Linux is because it is Open Source, and lot many things can be automated through scripting languages, which in windows I don't know. So, I have installed linux on a virtual machine(Host-Windows 2007 & Guest Linux CentOS), CentOS(command line interface). Since I am a beginner, so I want to know what all tools can be used to facilitate and ease my development process. Some which I know are listed below:

1) Using Putty so that can access the Linux machine from anywhere within the network.
2) Since I want to develop on Linux, but want to use windows as developing platform. So have downloaded Eclipse Editor (C/PHP) on windows. But want to know how can I access linux files from here?
3) Installed Samba, and still trying to figure out how can I access linux files remotely on Windows.
4) How can I ease my development process and what all tools I can use..??

Fedora :: Installing VMware Tools In 12 Guest?

Feb 5, 2010

[There are quite a few outdated guides relating to older versions of Fedora, so I figured that I'll write it up specifically for Fedora 12 to make life easier for others]

This guide is based on a fully patched Fedora 12 distribution as of Feb 5 2009.

A default install of Fedora 12 as a VMware Image (Guest) will generally fail to install VMware Tools for the following reasons (In the Fedora 12 Guest Image):

1. GCC and related packages are not installed

Make sure that 'yum list gcc*' has at least the following packages installed (these are not installed by default unless you select developer configuration).

[root@localhost ~]# yum list gcc*
Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
Installed Packages
gcc.i686 4.4.2-20.fc12 @updates
gcc-c++.i686 4.4.2-20.fc12 @updates

2. Correct kernel-devel packages are not installed. This generally manifests itself via the following prompt:
'What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?'

Fedora 12 installs kernel-PAE by default instead of the normal kernel rpm for the i386 distribution. Consequently, the header files required by vmware-config-tools.pl are found in 'kernel-PAE-devel' and not 'kernel-devel'.

[root@localhost ~]# yum list kernel*
Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
Installed Packages
...

The symlink /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.i686.PAE/source should work if the correct kernel-*-devel package is installed. vmware-config-tools.pl seems to only check this link to determine if it has found a legitimate kernel header directory.

Fedora :: Installing VMware Tools In 13 Guest?

I'm trying to install the vmware tools in Fedora 13. I've run the following commands as root:

yum install gcc -y
yum install kernel-devel -y
./vmware-install.pl

when it asks for the location of the directory of the C header files that match my running kernel I entered:

/usr/src/kernels/2.6.33.4-95.fc13.i686/include

but vmware-install.pl says:

The path to "/usr/src/kernels/2.6.33.4-95.fc13.i686/inc" is not valid..

Fedora Installation :: 10 Upgrade / Installation Failing On Presario F700 Laptop

May 29, 2009

I've tried to upgrade my FC8 on Presario F700 series laptop to FC 10 and facing some issues. I've a live CD (i386). Initially i tried upgrading FC 8 to FC 10 and installation was stuck around 30% completion saying its unable to fins libdbi-0.8.3-1.fc9.i386.rpm. Then I tried to install FC 10 from scratch as system went to inconsistent state and faced two issues with two different setup options -

1) when i selected necessary software to be installed for office use and development, it failed after installing 20% saying libgnomeui-devel-2.24.0-2.fc10.i386.rpm

2) i then opted for for software to be installed for office use (default option) then it failed after installing around 50% saying libXrandr-1.2.3-1.fc10.i386.rpm

im trying to understand if this is a problem due to my laptop configuration (AMD Athlon 64 X2 Duel Core) or due to issue with the live CD.

Fedora Installation :: Mozilla Failing To Open

Sep 1, 2009

Skype doesn't recognise my plugged in mic and earphones. I can hear sound through the headphones from other programs. DVD burner burnt a cd for me, but seemed to pause at around 15-20% and sat there for half an hour. When I ejected CD it jumped to 100% stating it had finished. The CD was a Live Install CD for Ubuntu, which didn't work. I get I/O errors when trying to install from CD on start up. I'm guessing it didn't burn properly or isn't being read properly. I'm generally unsure of what drivers are installed for all of my hardware. Not sure if there is an auto-detection program in or for Fedora that can help, or if I will have to stop being lazy. Skype, like mentioned before. I'm not sure if this is a software issue or driver issue.

Mozilla failing to open. When clicking on the Firefox icon it wouldn't start. Shows an icon at bottom of monitor on toolbar, but disappears after 5-10 seconds with no browser opening. I had recently installed a VLC player with plugin for Mozilla while logged in as root. Wondering if I messed this one up myself? I stumbled onto updates and it had Mozilla install in there. It works again. I'm sure it won't be reoccurrent. If I were to post system specs and issues I'm having, would someone on this forum be willing to guide me through or point me in the direction of having my laptop fully operational? All drivers basically. It works as is, just not completely

Fedora Installation :: Error While Trying To Install Vmware Tools - 11

Oct 22, 2009

I have Vmware Fusion 2.0.6 (196839) running on my MacBook Pro. I installed Fedora 11 on the fusion and it works fine. The only problem that I am having is that when I try to install vmware tools, by runnning ./vmware-install.pl in the terminal, I am prompted with this message: What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]

the kernel that I have running is:

I'm trying to install VMware Tools for the sake of the SVGA driver alone. For the life of me, I cannot get it to work. I'm able to run ./vmware-install.pl but when it comes to configuring it that's where I've run into trouble. I've been trying and trying and trying and trying all morning to get this to work and I'm getting very frustrated now. It keeps asking me, "What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?" I've Googled this and read several threads on the issue, tried every conceivable path I think it might be and it keeps coming back again and again saying "The path "<path>" is not valid. Would you like to change it?" WTF!? Can somebody please tell me what the default location of the C header files is under Fedora 14? Geez Louise I just want to install VMware Tools, for Christ's sake! It shouldn't be this difficult. BTW,

Fedora Installation :: Simple Ways Install Software For A "Development" System?

Jul 11, 2009

In the old days, the installation of Fedora offered options like a "Development System" and showed software packages related to that purpose, which you could check or un-check. I gather that with FC 11, you install a basic system from the live Cd and, (assuming a fast internet connection) it's up to you to know what to add. Are there any short cuts or crutches that mimic the old way of doing things? Or is there a special "spin" of FC11 that is for software development?

Installing backtrack4 tools with menu structure in Kubuntu 9.10 *NOTE* This WILL break your kpackagekit !!! You will need to reinstall kpackagekit after the installation is complete or fix it with synaptic. *This may or may not break your system so do at your own risk* For this to work you will need to follow these instructions EXACTLY as it is here. Go to: Download the tarzip and open it up. INSTALLING THE BACKTRACK SUB MENU STRUCTURE

Place the menu_backup folder in your home directory. <<----YOU WILL NEED THIS FOR THIS TO WORK Open the BT4-app-list folder and place the backtrack.txt1 file also in your home directory. Open a shell and type: kdesudo dolphin /etc/xdg/menus Delete the kd4-applications.menu file.
