Fedora Installation :: Can't Install Newest OS

Mar 30, 2010

Since about half a year ago I downloaded the 11th version of Fedora from the official web page but when trying to install it (I tried booting from cd) it loads everything all right, I get the fedora loading screen, but when it finishes the loading remains so, I doesnt mark errors or anything, I get the cursor on the black screen, the HDD LED turns off and then it remains just like that, I left it up to 1 full hour and from there nothing happens, also tried the ubuntu 9.04 and it is exactly the same, after loadint everything ok, it reaches a point where the screen goes black with a cursor and the HDD LED goes out , the cursor keeps going and it gets stuck.i readed a few time ago that this happens because my video card (which was integrated in the mb) did not support these versions of linux, then i bought an Nvidia GeForce FX 5200LE 128mb card and same thing happened, a couple of months ago i was using a P4GEMX ASUS motherboard with 760 RAM and HDD 160 gb IDE drive. I gave up and leave it for peace.

Today I use an D865GBF Intel motherboard with 1GB of RAM, same video card Nvidia Geforce FX 5200LE and passes the same thing, also tried to install Windows 7 and reaches the point where it shows the wallpaper just before the installation options but nothing happens and it stays right there .. the pointer disappears, I gets stuck in the wallpaper and yet again...the HDD LED goes out, I am very confused, I changed every piece of the pc, new motherboard, new rams and nothing, the only thing that I am still using of the old pc is the hard drive, also tried another HDD, one of 60gb GHola que tal, very good afternoon to all, is the first time I write in the forum and my problem is this:

Since about half a year ago I ordered a cd of ubuntu 9.04 version when trying to install (if I try booting from cd) load all right, I get the ubuntu loading logo, just finished loading and remains so, I mark errors or anything, I get the cursor on the black screen, the HDD LED turns off and now ... just so he stays, I left it up to 1 full hour and from there nothing happens, also try booting linux from the cd (without making changes to your computer) and it is exactly the same, try also with Fedora 11 and it is exactly the it reaches a point where the screen goes black with a cursor and the LED goes out there hard drive, the cursor keeps going and is just lei long that this was because my video card (which was built in) did not support these versions of linux, then buy a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200LE card and same thing happened, was a P4GEMX ASUS motherboard with 760 RAM and disk 160 gb IDE drive. I gave up and leave it for peace.

Today I D865GBF Intel motherboard with 1GB of RAM, same video card Nvidia Geforce FX 5200LE and passes the same thing, also try to install Windows 7 and reaches the point where it makes the wallpaper to give after the installation options and stay there .. falls short of options, the pointer disappears, I stay in the wallpaper and for varying the harddisk LED goes out, I am very surprised and totally changing equipment, new motherboard, new ram and nothing, the only thing that I am using the above pc the hard drive, also try another 60gb hard drive and same thing happens, it will be??? perhaps I need a SATA hard disk??

Fedora Installation :: Newest Nvidia Driver Still Hangs At Anacron / Fix It?

Feb 6, 2009

After a few days of wrestling the xorg.conf file and the akmods/kmod apps, finally have it running properly with a dual display/one graphic card setup BUT only from init 3 and then startx. Trying with init 5 shows a segmentation fault right after recognizing the kmod driver but the sequence keeps running until it after it hits the anacron OK portion. This occurs with an NVIDIA 6800 XT which is covered by the 180.25 driver. Other forum Q&A suggests the wrong driver but NVIDIA recommends this one.

OpenSUSE Install :: Newest Version Of A Package From Different Repository?

Apr 15, 2011

My procedure for updating the installed packages was, to klick on the list of packages that are installed in the installation source @ system in YAST and choose "Update if newer version is available". Up to Suse 11.3 Yast automatically chooses the latest version from each available repository that is installed (eg, Packman or Mozilla Build Service). With 11.4 however, I noticed that it only updates a package, if a newer version is avalible in the repository from which the package originally origines. Since I don't want to look through 4 GB of packages manually, whether there are newer versions in another repository available, I ask you if I there is a posibility to get the old behavior of YAST back.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Won't Boot With Newest Kernel?

Nov 18, 2010

I had done the upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 online and couldn't boot to newest kernel and had to select the previous one in GRUB. From what I have read it may be because of NVIDIA drivers or some conflict. Anyways,I did a fresh install of 10.10 from the Live CD overriding my 10.04-to-10.10-online-updated partition so I do not have an option to boot older Linux kernels now. I was wondering if the Live CD could be used to install any previous linux kernels for the new installed Ubuntu 10.10 system.

Ubuntu Installation :: Newest Kernel Cannot Detect Disks

Aug 8, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, and the latest kernel upgrade (xxxx.22) won't start the system because it can't find the hard disks. It ends up with a prompt from (initramfs). The computer has an MSI board with Intel P4 Dual CPU, and a Phoenix Award BIOS marked W7037 IMS V1.2, dated 091604 (Sep16/04). I doubt that a newer BIOS that will fix the problem, but if anyone knows I could try to find a floppy drive and a diskette, because they require that to install the newer BIOS (ver 1.3). Does any one have a better method? Is it still possible to get the previous kernel version until they fix this bug (if they ever will)?

Is there a way to change the boot sequence in GRUB2 so the original kernel would be the default even if the rest of the software has been updated? Since 10.04 has several bugs and annoyances, may be it's time to change to another distribution (I've tried Mint 9, but it has much of the same, like having to enter the password if I take a short break from the computer). Many questions at once, but less and less things are functioning with each new revision. For instance to use the scanner I must go back to 8.04, or use WINDOWS! (The scanner is the only reason why I have Windows on the computer).

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot Into Newest Kernel After Upgrades

May 14, 2011

this is a new problem with issues that started when I upgraded to 10.10. Originally, GRUB wouldn't load after that upgrade, but that was fixed here. Once GRUB was working properly, there was a problem with the 2.6.35-28 generic kernel. When I tried to boot through it, I would only get an ubuntu command line.

Luckily the older 2.6.32-22 generic kernel worked just fine and I could log in and load my ubuntu desktop with no issues. I decided to upgrade to 11.04 to see if that would correct whatever was going on. The installation was completed without any apparent issues, GRUB works, XP Pro works, and the older 2.6.32-22 generic kernel allows me to boot into 11.04.

Unfortunately, another new kernel, 2.6.38-8 generic, is not working properly. I snaped some pictures of what happens when I try to use this kernel:

[URL]

The first is GRUB/ The selection The second is the loading graphic The third is a command line where it freezes (note: this is not the same command line screen/environment that I was referring to with the 10.10 new kernel)

Fedora X86/64bit :: Unable To Use 14 (64) Newest Patches With RANDR?

Jun 13, 2011

I have been running tomcat as a web server for quite a while. One particular application requires OpenOffice to be up a server for document conversion. Under Fedora 14 (and NOT before), I had to add Xvfb to the mix so OpenOffice could run properly headless. I have a script to start/stop/restart tomcat (S99tomcat) which has been working flawlessly until I did the most recent updates to Fedora. The script still works fine (S99tomcat start) at boot time. However when I invoke stop and then start it due to an application change (or just restart) - openoffice fails to come up whining about xrand

Here is the line I use to bring up OpenOffice
/usr/lib64/openoffice.org3/program/soffice -nologo -headless -accept=socket,host=localhost,port=9999,tcpNoDelay= 1;urp;StarOffice.ServiceManager

It took a lot of research to get the above right (open office parameters are sensitive to order on the command line and quotes need to be put around the parameters as there is a semicolon embedde in the accept parameters.

Anyway - here is the new error

Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":1.0".
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":1.0".
Xvfb is running on Display ":1"

If I reboot the machine this same command set will run fine. This just happened when I applied the newest patches for all my software (normally I do this weekly).

Software :: Slackware 12.2 - And The Newest Firefox?

Jan 14, 2011

I would like to upgrade to the newest firefox. It is 3.6.somewhat. My official Slackware (12.2 - 2.6.27.7-smp) upgrade supported the latest version , which was 3.0.19. Via GUI i could update this, and i did it.

So, now , I installed a new kernel (2.6.35-stable, and modules ). I saw, that I can download the firefox paket from their page, and I did this already some months ago, whith the experience, that this package is some kind of portable executable, means, just unpack it, and run it. It seems, as i do not need to install it ( what interferes in some kind with plugin directories , flashplayer for example. )

But, I would like to build it again, using their old config as mine ( via make oldconfig) and then converting it all to an tgz. My question now is : will this work ? because, I updated my kernel, and went to 2.6.35 but not my glibc, my kernelheaders nor my gcc. Will I still be able to compile this new ff from source and .tgz it ?

Ubuntu :: Grub 2 Not Loading Newest Kernel

Mar 20, 2010

I have been running Ubuntu 9.10 ever since it was released, on my HTPC. However, for some reason when a new kernel comes out and I upgrade to it GRUB 2 doesn't load the newest kernel but just loads the old original kernel that came with it when I originally installed 9.10. I have confirmed that the newer kernels are installed by editing the GRUB 2 command line at startup (just a temporary fix) and all worked well with the newer kernels. How can I make GRUB 2 load the newest kernel by default. On my laptop running 9.10 it has loaded the newest kernel by default ever since I installed it but my HTPC just won't cooperate.
