Jan 9, 2010I just installed ubuntu because the newer versions were not working for me. So I installed 7.10 and there is no repositories that are still up. Is there any repositories that I could add from the newer ones or other distro repositories.

Nov 18, 2010I had done the upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 online and couldn't boot to newest kernel and had to select the previous one in GRUB. From what I have read it may be because of NVIDIA drivers or some conflict. Anyways,I did a fresh install of 10.10 from the Live CD overriding my 10.04-to-10.10-online-updated partition so I do not have an option to boot older Linux kernels now. I was wondering if the Live CD could be used to install any previous linux kernels for the new installed Ubuntu 10.10 system.

Aug 8, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, and the latest kernel upgrade (xxxx.22) won't start the system because it can't find the hard disks. It ends up with a prompt from (initramfs).The computer has an MSI board with Intel P4 Dual CPU, and a Phoenix Award BIOS marked W7037 IMS V1.2, dated 091604 (Sep16/04). I doubt that a newer BIOS that will fix the problem, but if anyone knows I could try to find a floppy drive and a diskette, because they require that to install the newer BIOS (ver 1.3). Does any one have a better method? Is it still possible to get the previous kernel version until they fix this bug (if they ever will)?
Is there a way to change the boot sequence in GRUB2 so the original kernel would be the default even if the rest of the software has been updated? Since 10.04 has several bugs and annoyances, may be it's time to change to another distribution (I've tried Mint 9, but it has much of the same, like having to enter the password if I take a short break from the computer). Many questions at once, but less and less things are functioning with each new revision. For instance to use the scanner I must go back to 8.04, or use WINDOWS! (The scanner is the only reason why I have Windows on the computer).
Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot Into Newest Kernel After Upgrades
May 14, 2011this is a new problem with issues that started when I upgraded to 10.10. Originally, GRUB wouldn't load after that upgrade, but that was fixed here. Once GRUB was working properly, there was a problem with the 2.6.35-28 generic kernel. When I tried to boot through it, I would only get an ubuntu command line.
Luckily the older 2.6.32-22 generic kernel worked just fine and I could log in and load my ubuntu desktop with no issues. I decided to upgrade to 11.04 to see if that would correct whatever was going on. The installation was completed without any apparent issues, GRUB works, XP Pro works, and the older 2.6.32-22 generic kernel allows me to boot into 11.04.
Unfortunately, another new kernel, 2.6.38-8 generic, is not working properly. I snaped some pictures of what happens when I try to use this kernel:

The first is GRUB/ The selection The second is the loading graphic The third is a command line where it freezes (note: this is not the same command line screen/environment that I was referring to with the 10.10 new kernel)
Fedora Installation :: Can't Install Newest OS
Mar 30, 2010Since about half a year ago I downloaded the 11th version of Fedora from the official web page but when trying to install it (I tried booting from cd) it loads everything all right, I get the fedora loading screen, but when it finishes the loading remains so, I doesnt mark errors or anything, I get the cursor on the black screen, the HDD LED turns off and then it remains just like that, I left it up to 1 full hour and from there nothing happens, also tried the ubuntu 9.04 and it is exactly the same, after loadint everything ok, it reaches a point where the screen goes black with a cursor and the HDD LED goes out , the cursor keeps going and it gets stuck.i readed a few time ago that this happens because my video card (which was integrated in the mb) did not support these versions of linux, then i bought an Nvidia GeForce FX 5200LE 128mb card and same thing happened, a couple of months ago i was using a P4GEMX ASUS motherboard with 760 RAM and HDD 160 gb IDE drive. I gave up and leave it for peace.
Today I use an D865GBF Intel motherboard with 1GB of RAM, same video card Nvidia Geforce FX 5200LE and passes the same thing, also tried to install Windows 7 and reaches the point where it shows the wallpaper just before the installation options but nothing happens and it stays right there .. the pointer disappears, I gets stuck in the wallpaper and yet again...the HDD LED goes out, I am very confused, I changed every piece of the pc, new motherboard, new rams and nothing, the only thing that I am still using of the old pc is the hard drive, also tried another HDD, one of 60gb GHola que tal, very good afternoon to all, is the first time I write in the forum and my problem is this:

Dec 3, 2010Recovery mode doesn't work, same problem. Taking the older kernel gives no problem. I have no 3rd party graphics driver installed. 10.04 was a fresh install on this machine. I cannot get a commandline, the screen just shuts down because of a lack of input.

Feb 6, 2009After a few days of wrestling the xorg.conf file and the akmods/kmod apps, finally have it running properly with a dual display/one graphic card setup BUT only from init 3 and then startx. Trying with init 5 shows a segmentation fault right after recognizing the kmod driver but the sequence keeps running until it after it hits the anacron OK portion. This occurs with an NVIDIA 6800 XT which is covered by the 180.25 driver. Other forum Q&A suggests the wrong driver but NVIDIA recommends this one.

Feb 9, 2011I am running Suse 11.1 64bit, with KDE, recently I received a pop up on my screen, "something about update problems", I used Yast 2 and selected online Update and it couldn't find updates for Nvidia and froze at that point. I dis-enabled that repository and refreshed all of the remaining Repositories individually and it seemed to work. I then went to the repositories listing and selected "Add" and selected "community" repositories and received the following: WARNING Unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined. What is my problem? How do I acquire the list of community repositories? I can live with out the Nvidia repository for now but would eventually like to get it back.

I'm running a server with 8.04 LTS server edition, and I'd like to upgrade to the latest version of sshd because the version included with 8.04 doesn't easily support chroots and I know it's simple to set up in newer versions. There's no official backport, and I don't want to upgrade the whole OS to 10.04 or 9.10, so I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade only the sshd package using a newer repository or something like that?

Nov 7, 2010I installed the PinguyOS version of Maverick, but even after disabling all the repositories that came with it I still couldn't get this to work. Therefore this must be a problem with Ubuntu 10.10 itself, however if this problem does exist is Ubuntu, I'm surprised these forums are flooded with complaints. I've searched them up and down and I found nothing. Anyway, the problem is that I can't install digikam, this is the error I get: The following packages have unmet dependencies.
digikam : Depends: kdebase-runtime but it is not going to be installed
Depends: kdepim-runtime but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libkde3support4 (>= 4:4.4.4) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libqt4-qt3support (>= 4:4.5.3) but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: kipi-plugins but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages
The problem here seems to be that the kde libraries that come with ubuntu are version 4.5 for everything. And it seems digikam 1.4 is built against kde 4.4.

I can't upgrade to 10.04 or 10.10, tried several times, it just doesn't like my old video card. Money is really tight now, so can't upgrade the video card either OK, now my question. On my university, the technology center uses the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I've been told by my teacher to get GCC for the C language. Searching for GCC on my netbook, I can find two programs: Sysinfo (why?) GGcov (doesn't open) Searching for GCC on the TC Computer, I can find 115 programs... The administrator wasn't there at the moment I checked this, and he'll not be there on this weekend so... I would like to do this by myself tomorrow. With my vast one-week experience with ubuntu, I think such software abundance from the TC computer side is related to repositories. I would like to copy them all to my netbook, if it's possible.

Apr 9, 2011I'm in the midst of updating from my poky old Dell to a newer (3 yr old) HP laptop. I've completed most of the changeover, but I can't seem to add any repositories to Software Sources. When I attempt to enter the APT line into Synaptic, the only button that's clickable is "Cancel." This holds true even if I use sudo to run Synaptic from the command line.
I've also tried editing /etc/apt/sources.list directly, but when I enter the corresponding lines (cut and pasted from my old computer, to eliminate the chance of typos), I get a message that the newly inserted lines are "malformed."
I'm sure I've overlooked something simple, but I've been at this for two days now and I'm getting a bit frustrated (doesn't do much for mental clarity).

I just tried adding the same repository to my desktop pc as well separate install separate machine same error, while checking software sources in gnome nothing seems out of the ordinary. My desktop was updated today via the update manager.
