Fedora Installation :: Acer 5004 Display Flicker - Pixels Are Miscolored
Jun 17, 2010
I have an Acer Aspire 5004 WLMi laptop with the SiS M760GX video chip. Under Gentoo the graphics worked perfectly but not so under my new Fedora 13 installation. There is enormous flicker with large regions where the pixels are miscolored. I used
Code:
# X -configure to create the xorg.conf file which is here. It contains the same driver, SiS, which worked under Gentoo.

I recently upgraded my desktop to 11.4 and kde 4.6.1 My desktop has : VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690 [Radeon X1200 Series] This is legacy ATI stuff, radeon driver loaded (as was in 11.3) and seems to be operating. I am getting a somewhat periodic (5 secs or so) flicker on the display, fast enough to be annoying but not fast enough to really affect anything.
I have seen several threads about short freezes, but realize that flicker and freeze might be a matter of speed and memory, etc. I tried suspending Desktop Effects, that may have reduced the frequency of the flicker but did not eliminate.

I've just installed 10.10 and the screen is shifted down (meaning, there is a black bar at the top of the Acer AL1916W monitor and the bottom menu bar is hidden - the accessible). The Acer controls seem to have no effect on this.

I have a new installation of Karmic 9.10 up and running but for some reason my Nvida Quadro NVS 280 SD graphics card can not align my Sony SDM-HX73 monitor correctly. On the left I'm missing 10 or 15 pixels and on the right I have a thin black strip of unusable screen.

I recently downloaded Ubuntu 9.1 and burned it to a CD. However, I can't seem to get it to boot. I got to the main menu and selected to run it directly from CD, and the Ubuntu symbol showed up saying it was loading things, but then the screen went black and nothing happened even if I waited over 15 minutes. During this time the HDD light was flashing every second or two, and I could see about three white pixels at the top most row of the screen.

I was on earlier 9.x version of ubuntu with following configuration working perfectly: IBM ThinkPad T60 with ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X1400 VGA graphics card (found it from lspci) With an external Dell 19" monitor attached to it. I upgraded yesterday to Ubuntu 10.4 LTS and now the Dell monitor screen keeps flickering all the time! I always work with an external bigger monitor attached to my laptop as working for long hours on the smaller screen of the laptop gives me headache. The frustrating point is, this setting was working perfectly until I was on Ubuntu 9.x, I upgraded to 10.04 LTS and this has stopped working.

Screen flicker Ubuntu 10.10
After installing Ubuntu (Version 10.10 DVD amd 64Ubuntu 10.10 live DVD).
On the following hardware
Gigabyte GA-K8VT800-RH motherboard
3GB ram
AMD Sempron 3400 cpu.
ATI Radeon X1600 Pro Video card. 256M ddr2 AGP VGA/TV0/DV1-1
p/no 882c85-03
The screen resolution looked very good with all screen resolutions working well The colours and fonts very clear. All other device drivers worked 100%. But unfortunately the display flashes about every 10 seconds and the partial beak up of the display only lasts a fraction of a second and very distracting and is unusable. Testing with Ubuntu 10.10 live DVD. With this months Linux Format Magazine also exhibits this problem. However deleting the partition and installing Ubuntu 10.04 Beta1 DVD -386. And all updates downloaded. Works 100% with no screen flicker.

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.4 alongside Windows. During the installation process, everything was black, then it flickered for a couple of seconds, then went black again. This happened many times. After the installation, I was hoping it would stop, but the same thing happens at the login screen. It flickers for a couple of seconds, then goes black. I figure it has something to do with my display drivers, but I don't know how to install them without using Ubuntu. If it makes any difference, I have an ATI Radeon 4890 video card.

I've been desperate to successfully install Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire 1714SMi (old and huge, I know), but the display suffers from a greatly reduced color range, strange white haze/ fine vertical lines and virtually ilegible text. I took a screen shot as I know it's hard to describe these things, but it looks normal on the image! The Graphics Driver is nVIDIA GeForce FX Go5700 128MB. The display is perfect on XP.
I downloaded some NVidia Drivers for Linux from nVidia & from here: [URL] Can't get any of them to work, and I find it hard to believe it's so difficult to get a basic display to work. I'm about to give up.

I just bought a new Acer desktop, installed Fedora 10. No problem getting into run level 3 but if I try to start X I get the following at the bottom of the message
Fatal server error
no screens found
xinit: No such file or directory (errno2): unable to connect to x server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error
I have dug around the internet to see what might be wrong. There are some articles from years ago but to be honest some of it is beyond me.
From my system

I have a bit of a problem with the proprietary nvidia driver which I installed as a binary on suse 11.3, when I run the nvidia-settings gui it does not give any widescreen display modes as options. My monitor is an Acer x193w which will do 1440x900 but there is no option for that. The monitor is just listed as a generic CRT, and only 4x3 display modes are given. My card is a PNY Geforce 6200 AGP 512MB.

I just got my new laptop (Acer Timeline 3810T) but I'm having trouble installing F11. The specs are: Intel Core 2 Duo processor, SU9400; Intel GMA 4500MHD; 4GB memory; no CD/DVD drive.I'm trying to install from a live cd in a USB drive using this link URl...I can boot without problems, but then when I try to start Fedora I get a screen with a pattern of orange and black colors which flickers for one second or less and then just a black screen. I cannot verify the live cd either, I get the same black screen.
It obviously looks like a video issue but I'm not sure how to solve it. By the way, there's a long thread about installing Ubuntu 9.04 at URL... and there are several known issues, but I didn't see anything like this. I'll try to install Ubuntu later and see how it goes, but I'd really like to be able to get Fedora working...

I have an Acer Aspire 1410 laptop which was running Win7. The laptop lacks a DVD drive and came pre-installed with a recovery partition as well.I've been searching for ways to dual-boot Fedora on it. I bought a Samsung USB DVD drive, but I burned two copies of Fedora 12 and neither would boot, nor would my Knoppix Live CD. I even updated the bios. Then I tried liveusb-creator from my desktop Fedora 10 system, but I would still run into strange errors that prevented booting into the installer.
Finally I downloaded UNetbootin and created a USB stick to boot Fedora 12. Neither Fedora 12 nor Ubuntu would recognize my network adaptor for some reason. Undaunted, I then used UNetbootin to create a Fedora 11 image which got me into the boot installer for the first time. I then used my Fedora 12 image from my portable DVD drive to install. The install seemed to go well.
That is, until I rebooted. Grub came up as expected. Fedora 12 runs into a very early Kernel panic (not syncing: DMAR hardware is malfunctioning) within moments. I tried rebooting into Windows, but it apparently doesn't care much for Grub. It sends me into the Recovery software and asks me to reset my hard drive. I've tried that a couple of times now and it's useless. Is the problem with Grub? I thought it would play nicely with Win7 and at least allow me to boot into it, which is why I allowed it to overwrite my MBR. I lack a Win7 disc and cannot repair the MBR that way.

I just installed Fedora 12 on a rack computer. I know my screen has the ability to show 1600x1200 pixels. But I don't know what my video card can do. Right now my screen is stuck at 800x600. When I had Fedora 11 I remember it could go to 1024x768 or maybe a little larger. I can't really find a driver for the ATI RageXL, How to make the screen resolution as high as possible.

I'm running Fedora 10 [KDE] on an Acer laptop and am having problems configuring "hot keys" for it. First thing that needs to be mentioned is that the hotkeys used to work when I was running it on Gnome without me having to do anything. I assumed that this will be the case with KDE too. In any case, I think driver installation is supposed to be quite straight forward. There are two packages: acer_acpi and acerhk and different installation instructions for each one of them. The problem I am having is when I run the makefile script for either one of these, I get the following output in the terminal:
Quote:
Makefile: line 5: KERNELSRC?=/lib/modules/2.6.27.9-159.fc10.x86_64/build: No such file or directory
Makefile: line 6: KERNELSRC: command not found
Makefile: line 6: KERNELSRC: command not found
Makefile: line 6: shell: command not found
Makefile: line 6: shell: command not found
Makefile: line 8: KERNELVERSION: command not found
[Code].....
I think build-essential and some other packages are normally needed, but since you can't get them for Fedora (?), I groupinstalled "Development Tools" and some other group.

I wonder if you can help me please. I purchased an Acer Aspire One netbook running Linpus Linux on it for my daughter. She absolutely love it and so far I have managed to update Open Office to Open Office 3.0.1, installed Skype and installed Firefox 3.She has been doing her homework and would like to print it off but I can't get my Epson DX8450 to work with it. I tried installing drivers from http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/spc/DL1.do (which is where Epson tell you to go). I installed some drivers and the printer started to print it was doing some strange things like printer two lines of the same single line, missing the top off the letters and putting two line spaces in between each line.
I am all new to this but does anybody advice or even provide step by step instructions on how to install the printer (if they have this model printer themselves).Also how to I remove the drivers that I installed last night that obviously are incompatible?

I have F11 running on my Acer laptop and I'd like to install F13 on a newly created partition.I have downloaded the DVD install a couple of days ago and tried to boot it using different options, but always failed. Below my attempts:
1) first option (Install or upgrade): it took a looooong time (like 4 or 5 hours) to get to the Loading vmlinuz message; after a couple more hours it was still there (with 4 or 5 dots more) and I decided that enough was enough;
2) second option (basic video driver): I tried it with and without the nomodeset option and in both cases the Loading vmlinuz message was immediate, but couldn't get past it;
3) first option (Install or upgrade) with the nomodeset option: again the Loading vmlinuz message was immediate, it added up to 10 or 11 dots and then hung;
4) I also tried to boot the same DVD on another laptop (just to rule out media problems) and quickly reached the first install screen, so the DVD is ok I think.
Note that in ALL the above described attempts, when the boot process hang I see my HD led constantly on and also the DVD led flashing.

This morning I ran sectool (in terminal for the first time. Before that I used sectool-gui) and I got this (written to file)...
See attachment please..
I think... the user "Jetty" may be a part of (or has something to do with SQL?).. This machine I have is not a server (in fact I know pretty much nothing about web servers).. this machine is used purely for local app development (python PyQt4/ and C++/wx - making games, general utilities, specialized calculators...etc)
So... Can anyone please tell me who the user "Jetty" is ? (The others are safe, I compiled python/SIP/PyQt4/wx/aliens from source... so that;s probably why it doesn't belong to packages.
Plus, My screen started to flicker some time (could it be possible someone is messing w/ my xorg configs?)

Upgraded to Fedora 11 and my display aspect ratio is now broken. I have a 23" Acer screen, but in Gnome its auto detecting as a 20" Acer display and the aspect ratio is wrong and the display grainy. I read the FAQs and am trying out some suggestions. Created an xorg.conf file in the correct place, contains the correct monitor settings but my display is still broken. Q. How do I force the kernel to read the xorg.conf file ?(PS: I'm kind of a newbie, have only come back to linux after a few years of using Windows)

i did not search in depth for this, as google spit a whole of different aswers at me, making not much sense at all. So here we go: Is it possible to install Fedora on a PC which has no keyboard nor mouse nor display attached to it? And if so plx give a link or a short description how to do it. I read about kickstart, but this was all a little wacky.
Note: The PC will have network access.

I'm new to Fedora and just installed F10 yesterday. Everything was perfect, no snags at all, until I used the software tool to install the ATI drivers. Now my computer boots but instead of going back to the GUI all I get is a gray screen. I've tried everything I know to get to the command line so I can go back to my old X11 settings but there's no response -just the gray screen.
I'd prefer not to have to reinstall if I could avoid it. Is there a know bug with either a Toshiba Satellite A210 series laptop or the ATI Radeon Mobility X1300 graphics card? Since I'm not able to get to the command line, I don't know of a way to diagnose what's failing.

I just updated from Fedora 8 to 10 to 11 today. When I run system-config-display I get the following message:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/system-config-display/xconf.py", line 33, in <module>
import rhpxl.monitor
ImportError: No module named rhpxl.monitor
If I comment out that line, the next one fails, and so on. I installed a newer package, 1.1.3-2.fc11, because I thought maybe the installer didn't put it on and that behaves the same. Why this won't run? I would desperately like to use my widescreen monitor and I'm hoping that 11 will finally support my intel graphics correctly.

I'm running F11 with an ATI HD3850 graphics card. I donloaded latest version of the ATI driver and installed it (without paying to much attention to versions and pre-reqs). This caused my display to be unusable in Gnome, nothing can be made out of it.
Was hoping to be able to repair this if I atleast had a bash prompt, but when I press ctrl-alt-F6 (or any F-button) my computer restarts. how I could fix this without reinstalling?

I use 3 computers attached to a kvm switch (not the hypervisor) and this works fine w/ windows xp and ubuntu 9.04 and earlier. However I am having a problem w/ Fedora 12. It seems that it cannot read the EDID block, so I am not able to set the display above 800x600. There is no xorg.conf file, so I had one generated by Xorg -configure :1. I also tried using the modeline instructions, but the Xserver would not start until I removed modeline. I have tried adding to Section "Screen"
Subsection "Display"
Modes "1280x800"
EndSubSection
but it seems that this is ignored. how can I get the Xserver to set display modes above 800x600 when it cannot read EDID (thru a kvm switch) and it seems to be ignoring settings in xorg.conf?
