Ive got two partitions of xubuntu installed and I only want one. Is there I way I can just delete the one i dont want and use that extra space for the other?
also, how would i know which is which when deleting?
I didn't know how to Make a cd image out of the Ubuntu iso so I made a seperate partition in my drive.Now I'm wondering how to delete the windows partition without formatting the whole hard drive.how to create a bootable cd image

View 7 Replies View RelatedSomething went wrong during my upgrade, and i was unable to boot. What I did to save the day was to install Lucid parallel (on an other partition). Now I just want to double-check before I mess up again - I've backup-ed all the stuff i wanna keep and want to format the old partition. preferably I'd like to extend my current partition to the whole drive (or just make an empty partition for media if that works). So how do I do this the easiest way, and what would be the best option (i.e. 1 or 2 partts.)?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI made a new partition on my hard drive, and installed Windows XP on it. However, because of space shortage on the disc (didn't bring my external HDD's with me) I could not "afford" to make the partition bigger than about 7GB. Turns out that's not quite enough. So I thought I'd try to resize the partition. Booted from my Ubuntu LiveCD and entered the partition manager. I'm able to tell the program that I want to resize the Linux-partition (so it sets the now freed space as "unused", but when I chose to "resize/move" on the XP-partition I do not have any free space. Does this mean that I have to resize the Linux-partition (until now I didn't actually resize it, only set the job as "pending" hoping that I could select both to shrink the Linux-partition and extend the XP-partition in one session), or do I have to format the XP-partition and make a new one (larger this time), then reinstall XP?

I remeber once there was a check into creating new partition form, but maybe i am confusing with fedora or other distros. Is there a way to complete job using GUI or should i create partitions: / /boot and swap with GUI and the others with fdsik?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on a brand new 500GB hard drive I just purchased and installed in my machine. I boot from the CD and instruct Ubuntu to install to this drive and tell it to "erase and use the entire disk" for this 500GB drive. After moving forward from that, I see it saying a message about creating an ext4 partition for root "/" and then shortly after the entire install dialogue goes away. All I am left with is the little circle cursors spinning round (mouse input still works) and the installation background. The HDD activity light was still on though. I gave it about 3 hours before I finally gave up and tried again.
When I tried again, I saw that it did create two partitions (root and swap) during the last attempt. The same thing happened, although now even mouse input isn't responding so my system is completely locked up. HDD activity remains active this time as well. Running Ubuntu from the CD works fine. The only problem I saw with it was when I ran gparted from the CD and tried to manually create a ext3 partition on my new disk drive. When I tried that, I ran into a similar occurrence (couldn't run any programs, eventually system locked up) and had to reboot.
I have a second hard disk but I have a lot of valuable data on that and don't want to mess around with it. It could be a hardware failure, but that seems unlikely to me as this is a brand new Seagate disk drive. I suppose I could try installing it on a spare partition on my other drive and see what happens, but other than that I'm out of ideas.
How can I change the label of one partition on linux without formatting it.
It wll format the partition, and all content disappears.
I formatted 56 GBs of my hard disk space into fat32 and it seems that 27 gbs of it is used! Though direct checking from the volume itself shows nothing like this, gparted still insists 27 gbs are used.

But the installer doesn't allow me to set the partition as / without formatting. XFS is not one of the filesystems listed as options for formatting. How can I make Fedora do what I want?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm a big fan of the NSLU2-Linux project so I've been doing some developments for this platform for the last three years. In order for the end users to test my applications, I initially created an USB image with everything bundled into it. Then, they only had to download the image and decompress (dd) it into an USB pendrive with capacity equal or greater than 4 GB. The fact is that this has brought me lots of problems in the practice since my Web server hardly accepts long file transfers.
Moreover, flash spaces beyond 4GB are wasted. As result, I'm now considering a different approach as I don't know how to do it. Well, I've thought that I could maybe create an USB disk image only with the root file system partition. Then, the first time a script runs, it creates a home partition and formats it into the rest of the space available in the pendrive. There is maybe some command-line alternative to fdisk without having the user to interact during the format process... ??
I had a drive with a partition layout like so:
~50gig Windows 7 - NTFS
~100gig Ubuntu - EXT3
~100gig Snow Leopard - HFS+
~100gig Extended Partition
-- ~100gig Swap Disk - exFat
I wanted to delete the Snow Leopard partition and format the Swap Disk partition to something else. exFat was causing major file size bloat on small files. QT sdk bloated to like 11 gigs or something ridiculous like that. Anyways, I loaded up an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS live cd and gparted then deleted the Snow Leopard partition. Gparted said "Mission Accomplished" and tried to rescan the drive, but never found it. At this point I restarted the computer, a dell laptop, which didn't boot with an unable to find a bootable device error. The ubuntu live cd doesn't see the drive anymore. gparted scans for drives indefinitely and fdisk -l has no output.
Tried to install Jessie RC1,but installer hangs on formatting the partition,at 33%.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSo I recently installed openSUSE KDE (latest build, don't know the number?). total linux noob, been a windows user all my life. right now i'm dual-booting between win 7 and opensuse KDE. i originally alotted for a parsley 10gb only to use as a backup whenever my windows inevitably starts having problems and i have no access or means to repair it/ use as a secure place to scan my windows partition and external drives for viruses. i want to expand my opensuse partition.
so my problem is this: i have a 200gb windows partition, a 15 gb partition (U) i set up to do file swapping cross-os (which i couldnt figure out how to work, btw. formatted it in FAT32). and my 10 gb suse partition (O). i tried using the built-in KDE partition manager to shrink or completely do away with U, and expand the suse partition. the problem is my suse partition is ecapsulated by an extended partition, whatever that is, and suse has its own 1.5 gb "swap" partition. after shrinking U i tried expanding O, but it said i was already at max size. tried expanding extended, also didnt work, same goes for the 1.5 gb suse swap partition.
i read in another post that i could do the resizing via some sort of bootable disc, the only problem is that i have no access to cd or dvd blanks, and i have no usb thumb drives just 2 external hd's - 1tb and 250gb. so how can i go about expanding my opensuse partition? the easiest way i could think of is to just reformat/repartition from windows, and reinstall opensuse from my boot dvd. only problem with that is i cant SEE my suse partition from windows...
i imagine i could also just boot from the dvd and run the installer again, and use the partitioner built into the installer, but i didn't really feel comfortable with it the first time around. im know my way around a computer but all of a sudden it blindsided me with a ton of options i know nothing about, it was a little too complicated.
i want to extend my existing partition size,but it should do it without formatting my operating system.i don't have the solution.Is this possible?if possiblsolution.hope somebody should give the answer

* ext4 partition accessible by root only.

KDE 4.6 - opensuse 11.4.
I have a separate ext4 partition which contains all my data (music, movies, etc). When I delete files from this partition it is very slow because it copies files from my data partition to the Trash folder in my home partition. How can I avoid this? Can't the trash be configured so that it uses a trash folder in each partition instead of copying files to another partition (which is slow).
I want to wipe out my Windows partition and reinstall due to sluggishness. I plan to use Windows instructions as if it was on a hard drive by itself. Will this affect the multi-boot capability or the Linux partition in any way? Would it be easier to reformat and partition the entire hard drive and re-install both OSes? I use OpenSuse 11.2 and Windows XP.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to actually wipe my entire hard drive and figured it may just be easiest to format the hard drive and deleting the partitions. So when I go to System => Administration => Disk Utility => Select the Hard Drive => Click Delete Partition => And I get the error shown in my screenshots. What would be my best way to delete this partition and remove ubuntu completely for the time being. And yes I am using the latest RC. 10.04. However I don't suspect this is a bug.

I am finally ready to remove it because I need the extra hard drive space.So: I have downloaded G-Parted and boot from the disk. When i select all the default settings, I am getting a "fatal server error no screens". Anyone have any ideas what to do? Ideally I want to remove the unbuntu partition and give Windows 7 all the HD space.

I've followed guides and it showed that you go into computer management and right click on the Ubuntu partition and delete it, but i can't do this. This is what my screen looks like -

When i right click the first partition, all it comes up with is 'Help' and not delete.
I am having trouble accessing my computer after abruptly shutting it down because it was booting off of a live CD and I just wanted it to boot of the HDD. When I try to boot up from the normal HDD I used to get a lot of errors about /dev/sda being not found, and then it went to an (initramfs) prompt, from which I could do pretty much nothing. I booted into a live CD, and basically I didn't need any of my data so I wanted to just get rid of the problem partition and reinstall. I attempted to delete the partition, but that didn't work, saying something about /dev/sda being busy (even though I had booted from a live CD and had not mounted the partition).
Anyhow, now when I try to boot from the HDD I get:
"Error: no such partition. grub rescue>"
Basically what I'm trying to do is just get rid of this partition and reinstall, but I keep getting errors about it being busy and not being able to delete the partition. Is there someone with a way to allow me to just blast this partition and reinstall? I've got a windows 7 partition on the same HDD and I'd really like to leave that one alone, but the ext4 and swap partition can just go.
OK so basically I have 3 partions on my 500 gb. hdd.
1. Windows 7 64-bit (375gb partion)
2. Ubuntu 9 (50gb partion)
3. Ubuntu 10(75gb partion)
Is there anyway I can remove Ubuntu 9 and allow Windows 7 to use that 50gb that was once used by Ubuntu 9.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 x64 installed and i've mounted both NTFS partitions. The first contains my Windows partition (with Windows 7 on it) and the second contains my backup partition. They are two seperate hardisks.Now, i'm trying to delete files on my Windows partition, but the ability to 'Cut' is greyed out and there's no 'delete' option at all.This only occurs on my Windows partition, but my Backup partition can execute and option; whether delete, cut etc.I assume this is either a settings in Ubuntu or something about Windows that prevents alternate O/S's from messing around with it.So how can I go about enabling the feature to delete from my Windows partition? The idea is to erase all Windows related stuff so I can reinstall Windows.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWell I currently have a windows partition currently formatted as ext3 which has the partition flag bootable (It previously had Windows Vista on it). I also have a windows partition with NTFS filesystem with Windows 7 on it which is not bootable because the previously mentioned partition became formatted by me. And I also have more partitions for Ubuntu, which is currently the only OS working.

So my question is can I delete the partition called "Inter" and recreate a new partition and format it again with ext3? It has the partition flag bootable, won't I loose all of the partitions this way? It's also the primary partition? Is there a big risk?
i'm running out of partitions, i was thinking if i could get rid of the windows system reserved partition without messing any of my windows 7 OS & the recovering partition. I'm currently using grub2 to boot ubuntu & win 7.
