Fedora :: Can't Write 14 To A DVD

May 18, 2011

I have downloaded Fedora 14 32 bit from Fedora project site. Here it is

[URL]

The file I have downloaded to my Windows 7 Ultimate drive is named Fedora-14-i386-DVD.torrent on the above page. It is 3.4 Gb DVD iso. I am trying to write it to a DVD (brand new and not damaged at all) but for some reason it does not get written. I am using the in-built DVD burning facility in Windows 7 ultimated OS. I assume that once the iso is written to a DVD it extracts many files to DVD, right?

Fedora :: Mounting Windows Server08 From Fedora 8 With Read/write Permissions?

Oct 7, 2009

I have Fedora 8 and we just switched over from a Windows "File Server" to Windows Server 2008 (10.1.1.17). I updated my fstab file and now when I go onto the Windows folders, I can list and read files, even save them, but new files are always read only.

fstab file (some, without the asterisks):
//10.1.1.17/USERS/Jeff/fs /home/mriuser/Desktop/fs cifs rw,username=jsadino,password=**** 0 0

I've tried ntfs-3g, auto, ntfs, smb, some umask combinations, changing ownerships, changing permissions, everything I could think of, but still can't modify new files.

[root@localhost tmp10]# mkdir tmp2
[root@localhost tmp10]# cd tmp2
[root@localhost tmp2]# touch tmp
[root@localhost tmp2]# ls -l

Fedora :: Read & Write Share With NFS In 13

Jun 18, 2010

I can't see any option for recursive directories in nfs in fedora 13.

This is my set-up:

Code:

Code:

save and exit.

Code:

When i mount the directory /media/Data from another Fedora 13 box i don't have read and write permissions for each and every file. The -R recursive option would be handy unfortunately this option is unavailable. The red hat docs have not been helpful in this respect.

Code:

Code:

The mounted partition is of the ext3 type. With the nfs-3g type i don't have any issue however most of my directories/partitions are of the ext3 type so i need get it sorted.

I changed my user name id number to the same number on all boxes thus giving me write access. There must be a better solution than this.

Fedora :: Write Custom Genre To MP3?

Jul 12, 2011

I'm currently switching from Mac OS X to Linux (Fedora 15). I've now moved my music library (about 40 GB), mostly in AAC (*.m4a) format. Since I didn't find a way to adjust the volume of these files using MP3Gain (although I read that it should work with AACs, it didn't), I've decided to just convert all files to MP3 using faad and lame. So far so good. (BTW: I've already converted them, so I don't need any help with AAC/MP3Gain...)

The problem: Lame ereases all the tags. I found a way to preserve at least the most important tags (title, artist, album, track number and year) using exiftool to extract them from the AAC files and id3tag to write them to the new MP3 files.. I'm loosing the album artist, but I have not many compilations, so that's not a real problem.

The real problem are the genre tags. My songs are all carefully tagged with custom genres, and I didn't find any way to write custom genres to MP3 files, only the predefined ones. So I just copied the genres into the comment tag to at least preserve them because I wanted to start the conversion process (which takes really, really long on my 3 years old MacBook).

Does anyone know a way to copy the custom genre from the comment tag (it's the only entry) to the genre tag? A way to write it to the MP3 is enogh, I already know how to copy it from the comment tag. The writing is my problem.

Red Hat / Fedora :: How To Get Unlimited Read/write?

Oct 25, 2010

I installed SAMBA and SWAT, latest versions. What I want to accomplish is to give Windows users unlimited read/write access to the entire filesystem, eg. (/). Barring that, I'd like to at least be able to configure full access to individual directories.And by "unlimited", I mean being able to edit and delete everything that would be normally accessible only by the root user. I want to grant the Windows users of the shares access as if they were root users.

Fedora Servers :: Cannot Write Into Html Folder

I'm setting up my fedora 10 server. I am currently working on samba. I have added users and created their home directories with their own html directories. I have changed their html directories to 777. However, it appears to be read-only since I cannot create files or folders within it. Can anyone please give me some ideas as to what may be causing this? Probably some extra configurations I may have overlooked? Any help would be kindly appreciated. I also created a general wshare (writable share) directory for all users within home directory but I am encountering the same problem and cannot write to it.

Fedora :: Write A Shell Script That Will Look At Each File?

Jul 23, 2010

I have a number of text files throughout my /home/pjs/Documents directory tree that have execute permissions set. Almost all of my file names have spaces in them. I am trying to write a shell script that will look at each file in my Documents directory, find the ones that have execute permissions set, and run the command chmod 644. Of course, I don't want the command run on the directories.

The following script *doesn't work*, but might serve to illustrate what I am trying to do:

#!/bin/bash
for x in "$(ls -R)" do
if [ -f "$x" ] && [ -x $x ]; then
chmod 644 "$x"
fi
done

I want each file and directory name to be placed, one by one, in the variable $x, and then tested with the "if" conditionals.

The first problem seems to be that, although the command "ls -R" does produce a complete list of the files and directories I need, they are not placed, one by one, in the variable x like I want them to be.

Also, I think I should use the shift command so that the option -R doesn't get included as one of the values of the variable $x, but I can't figure out where to put it.

Fedora Security :: Cryptset - Can't Read Or Write

Jul 28, 2011

So I have just set up my cryptsetup.I can open/mount it by either "crypsetup luksOpen" or just clicking on the partition from the "Places" tab and it will ask me for a password and all.

The only problem is that I can't read or write to it at all. Everything is probably root, which isn't useful to me.

So how can I change it so that when I do either of those 2 methods for opening it, I can just fully use it, read and write and everything? As my user.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Ram Drive With Atomic Write-to-disk

Apr 12, 2011

I'm only somewhat new to linux but I still don't have a real grasp of it's deep innards and I had a fairly outlandish idea that I'm wondering whether is possible/plausible or not.I want to run a game server on CentOS that has a very high dependency on fast writes-to-disk. Disk writes are pretty much the single bottleneck in this server.First I looked at allowing a high queue of writes to pile up before it flushes them to the disk, but I read that this causes fsync, which is still used commonly, to take a very long time.

I've been thinking about the possibility of running the server on a RAM disk, but I still want changes to be saved to non-volatile storage. Not all at once, but have it actively write the changes to disk. The hope is that this would smooth out the peaks and valleys of write activity and improve overall performance, but I have not seen this idea discussed anywhere.

So my question is, is there any plausible way to continuously copy writes to a RAM disk to a physical drive without slowing down the speed of the writes to the RAM drive below the speed of said RAM? Or is there a better way to obtain this sort of performance, short of investing in expensive equipment?

Fedora Installation :: F12 Install: Ramdisk: Incomplete Write?

Nov 18, 2009

So after deciding to upgrade the existing fedora install on my laptop from 11 to 12, I decided to use the preupgrade method. After grappling with the boot space issue by clearing out an old kernel that was deemed safe to remove by the python script on the preconfig wiki page and then using tune2fs, I left the computer to do it's thing, periodically checking back on it. I come back to my computer, and after an apparent restart I see this message spat out at me:

Code:
ramdisk: incomplete write (3537 ! 5123)
write error

kernel panic - not syncing : VFS : unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)
I need this laptop up and running for tomorrow and I would appreciate any help given. I have a Fedora 11 live CD running on the laptop and there seems to be an extra 210 filesystem present with the folders efi, grub, lost+found in there, as well as some config files, elf-memtest86+-400, what seems to be .img file amongst other things. If necessary, I can provide a screenshot.
