Hardware :: Recommended Ups To Prevent Server From Burning Up

Jun 2, 2011

I think this is the right place to ask my question so I'll just go ahead. Where I live we have frequent power anomalies such as outage and why I would describe as power resets resulting in power being cut and restored in a very fast delay, resulting in all electrical equipment in my house to reset and all computers to improperly shutdown and reboot. I don't know how many times my beloved Linux server was reset like this and every time reiser fs has to replay transactions and so far I've been lucky I did not lose any hdd or other components but I think this will happen sooner than later.

What I am searching for is a device that would protect my server, scanner, router and a few other small devices from power surges and anomalies that would result in hardware and equipment damage. What I also want from that device is the capability to continue powering the devices until they properly shutdown. I think a ups is what I am looking for but all models that I've seen are priced $400 up and that's over my budget.

What I also want is the capability to announce to the server that the device is running on batteries and that the server can initiate it's normal shutdown procedure.

Ubuntu :: Packages Prevent Burning In Karmic & Lucid?

Jan 12, 2010

I am doing some detective work again... after I found out I can't burn cds (again) on a 3rd dvd writer drive. Yes three. I was talking amoung a few members here who could not burn cds last night. After all that talk of burning cds, I had the urge to burn one too. To my surprise, I was unable to burn cds again. I got mad again so I just finished a fresh reinstall of lucid (testing) and all of a sudden I can burn a cd again. I decided to install lastfm and pysdm, so I have something to do while I try to burn a cd, and the burn in brasero worked without a hitch. So lastfm and pysdm checks out ok.

Anyways, here is the list of applications that I normally install. Can anyone pinpoint anything that has the potential to prevent me from burning cd's? The reason why I am asking here is because I can't waste that many cds testing the possibility of burning after each and every package I install.

Server :: Updating Time - Recommended Interval For Connecting To The Ntp Pool?

Apr 22, 2011

I am managing a PBX which runs redhat enterprise linux. The time on it is always getting out of sync, which causes the time on the phones to display incorrectly. I can't figure out for the life of me why the time keeps changing. How can I set it to update it's time every day or two? I don't want to hit ntp.org every day, as is recommended. What's the recommended interval for connecting to the ntp pool? The kernel is Linux 2.6.9-67.0.4 (from uname -a)

Server :: NTP Config - Prevent Clients Using Server?

May 24, 2010

I'm presently writing software to keep my system time from drifting, it uses an external clock device. To verify it's accuracy I'm running ntpd as a server, and have another server monior the first as a client. This allows me to compare the offset with other 'valid' time servers. The problem is that the monitoring client keeps synchronising with my development server. How can I configure either the dev. server or the client so that it's time won't be selected as a good time source? The ntp.conf on the dev. server looks like:

Code:
server 127.127.1.0 # local clock
fudge 127.127.1.0 stratum 10

Server :: Ssh: Prevent Disconnection After A Command?

Aug 19, 2010

I wish to create aliases to log into a server and go to a specific folder. For example, I have two aliases:

Code:

alias REP1='ssh me@server cd /REP1'
alias REP2='ssh me@server cd /REP2'

and of course, I'm disconnected after cd commands. I found no ssh option which prevents this disconnection to occur. I also tried the following trick:

Code:

ssh me@server "cd /REP; bash -i"

but it left me with a crappy shell (no color, directions keys printing ^]]A, ...)

Server :: OpenVPN Prevent Sites From Being Accessed?

Apr 18, 2011

Is there a way to prevent users of an OpenVPN service from accessing restricted sites? I know this can be done through a proxy server but through a VPN there seems to be no way of preventing traffic from accessing porn sites or other as the traffic is encrypted. I am using a VPN in the same fashion as a proxy server except that the VPN is necessary because some video sites use rtmp on port 1935, which a proxy server cannot route.

Ubuntu Networking :: Prevent Apache2 Server From Starting At Boot?

Nov 18, 2010

One of my ubuntu 10.04 boxes starts apache2 server automatically at boot. I know from the output of the command:

Code:

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 status

I can't remember even setting that up, and I don't think it does so by default, since my other box in fact does not even have apache2 server installed. I can stop the server once I login, but is there a way to stop it from automatically starting the server, or even better, completely uninstall the daemon. I tried

Code:

sudo apt-get remove apache2

but that does not work. I guess the daemon is part of some bigger package.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 64 Bit - Not Recommended For Daily Use

May 26, 2010

So I'm getting a new laptop soon, and it ships with Windows 7 64-bit. So I assume I have to use 10.04 64-bit. I noticed that the download page says "not recommended for daily use". I read the older FAQ thread in the closed 64-bit forum, but I wanted to make sure I got more recent information.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade From F13 To F15 - Recommended?

May 24, 2011

I am running a very stable F13 on my little box and I was thinking to upgrade from F13 directly to F15 using the preupgrade-cli tool. Is this recommended, or should I go to F14 first? I would like to skip that step:

The F13 is my home server with a lot of services:
- IMAP (dovecot)
- Postfix
- Postgresql
- apache (tons of php)
- vmware workstation 7.1.4
- dhcpd
- named
- samba
- squid

I am worried that the upgrade will break something. I spent a lot of time setting these things up.

Ubuntu :: Can't Boot 10.10 After Recommended Updates?

Dec 25, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.10 but I can only use Windows 7 now (I hate it). Here's why: when I go to the boot screen and I am given the choice of using Windows 7 or Ubuntu and I select Ubuntu, the screen goes black and says:

error: unknown command 'loadfont' error: file not found

Then I have to reset my laptop and use Windows 7. This happened when I was using Ubuntu like I usually did and I downloaded recommended updates from Ubuntu. I downloaded them and I was asked to reset my laptop for it to be effective. I did and when the boot screen came up it said what it says above. I can't even get to the login screen. I've been searching everywhere for an answer.

Software :: Recommended CMS For A Web Configuration Tool ?

May 18, 2011

I have inherited a web configuration tool based on mojoportal (which uses C#). As the web server hosting this site is on a Linux machine (currently Ubuntu + mono), I would like to recreate it in a more Linux-natural environment.

The web application I inherited needs to allow creation of configuration profiles for other Linuxes(including setting their IP tables, QoS and many other network protocols). These profiles are downloaded by the Linux clients and a local parser does the configuration accordingly.

The main properties I need are:
* Receive and display a lot of structured data to the user (i.e. iptables chains or QoS hierarchies) and of course process it
* Manage several users with different permissions
* Use MySQL as the database
* Allow FTP access to receive configuration files created
* Display monitoring data and graphs (a low-level NMS)

I do not need forums, blogs or any other user input apart from entering data in the forms (possibly a text editor, but that's about it)

I used to be very proficient in Python and Perl (so am sure it would be easy to regain these abilities) and am versed in SQL. I know HTTP and CGI but never worked with PHP.
