View 6 RepliesI seem to have an issue with my nvidia drivers again.I get them working, then the next lot of updates to fedora seems to revert any progress I've made.Currently I can't run any 3d accelerated applications, no wine, no games etc, I have followed the documentation, installed the driver, added the blackist to noveau into boot.conf, and restarted
Code:
[james@nevada ~]$ uname -r
2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.x86_64
[code]...
i understand ubuntu comes with opensource ati drivers installed by default?(Correct me if I am wrong)So does Fedora come with open source drivers installed by default too? or do i need to install them as well.I have radeon x700 card...and there is only one game that i would like to play on fedora 14 is Warhammer 4000: Soulstorm (2008 game)Will the open source drivers be enough or do i need to install the proprietary ones...(and is it hard?).
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is my first post, as I've finally become fed up with trying to get the nvidia drivers installed on Fedora 10. I've read through all the posts here about how people have had problems. I know about the rpmfusion repository, and have followed leigh123's instructions to the letter at this link:[URL]The exact stepsI have taken before following his sage advice follows this way: install off the CD image I burned of Fedora 10, run from the menus "System-->Administration-->Update System" to get the system up to date, reboot to make sure everything is working fine.
Then I follow the above instructions (only because they have gotten me the closest to getting the drivers working). After the reboot from following those instructions, the system starts up, and I have a desktop. But when I restart again, either because I'm shutting down for the night, or just to check again that everything is fine,I get nothing but a flashing cursor in the upper left of my screen. I'm able to CTRL+ALT+F2 and get to a login that way, but can't get into the GUI. I've searched the forums (both here and on The Web generally), and can't find a fix for this that works for me. I have gone back and erased the partition and reinstalled, so I'm at the basic install with all the updates for my system, and needing help with getting the drivers installed and working.
Just to give a run down of what I have on my system:Two NVidia 8500 GT cards connected with the SLI bridgeAMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+Runningl 2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.x86_64 (I'm typing this up as I reinstall updates as I listed above). Before anyone starts giving suggestions, please make sure to give the full instructions, as I'm new to Fedora/Linux. And if there is anything else you wish to know about my configuration
Today I spend the day updating to Fedora 15 (from 14). And by spent the day updating to Fedora 15, I mean that like the last 3 updates I've tried with Fedora, they end up getting hosed and I was forced to rebuild using a live disk. That being said I was able to install a fresh instance of Fedora, as well as use leigh123linux's "F15,F14, F13 & F12 Nvidia driver guides" thread to install the necessary drivers on my machine. However after the last reboot, I'm stuck with a funky top screen.
View 7 Replies View RelatedToday I finally could install Fedora 15 i686 in my now aging (2005) desktop computer (although I will always think of it as my "new machine", as long as I don't assemble a new one for me):
AMD Sempron 3100+ (1.8GHz)
1GB DDR400
120GB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 (128MB)
After I installed F15 my initialpression was that it worked really good on that hardware: everything went fine with GNOME 3 for example, except for some lags in graphics rendering, which I thought would be solved after the graphics card's full power were unleashed with the proprietary NVIDIA driver. For starters I am not sure which Nvidia driver is right for my card (Nvidia 173.X or the regularvidia).I managed to get "working" the 173.X driver but the desktop is even less responsive to begin with, and there appears to be a lot of activity on the hard disk side. So, my question is, which could be causing the performance loss?
A. The "small" RAM.
B. The vintage graphics card.
C. Some problem in the hard drive.
D. A known bug.
I am using Ubuntu & Kubuntu.and have also trialed Fedora 14. I am trying to install the Linux RPM Drivers& The CUPS Driver for this Printer which I have found on the Canon Asia site .The Printer has been reccognised by the Os but when I try to install them I get a message that the installation has failed because libgdk-1.12.so.0 is not installed?[I understand that this software is part of the GIMP Toolbox]These Drivers installed without difficulty in Fedora?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI didn't post this thread in the hardware section because I got my ATI propitiatory drivers installed successfully and my problem seems to be with KDE. I'm trying to enable Desktop Effects for KDE.
The story is that ATI drivers installed correctly but when I go to "Application Launcher" => "System Settings" => "Desktop Effects" I can't enable Desktop effects and it has the following message:
"Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues:
Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available."
First of all I don't really know what this means. I have done some Googling around and have found a few places suggesting that I should enable the "Damage" and "Composite" extensions in my xorg.conf. I have done that, as you can see in the attached Xorg.conf file. It still doesn't work.
I have installed Fedora 14 on my new laptop Thinkpad T410 but the wireless card is not detected.
I tried to install the drivers but got error. How to install the driver.

Sometimes, in Firefox, after looking a video and closing the corresponding tab, a still picture of the video appears in other tabs, even in some other applications than Firefox (e.g. Terminal). I've installed the nvidia drivers on Fedora 14. They seem to work properly.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWell I've been trying to get drivers installed for this card for a few days now and I can't get anything to work. The proprietary drivers for this card don't support the xorg version installed in F14. I've tried mesa and ati drivers but I can't get them to actually work, they both just cause x to crash during startup. I've looked through the threads for ati drivers but they all seem to talk about using the latest catalyst drivers and thus non of them have helped me much.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with 2 graphic cards on it, currently I have the nvidia drivers installed, and I want to install the Intel ones, but when I try to install I am prompted to remove the nvidia ones.
I have a module to turn off the nvidia card, but I still need to get the drivers for the intel card install, how to do it?
First off I cant seem to get any drivers installed for my GFX card, I've got an ATI Radeon X1300 and when I go to System > Admin > Hardware drivers it seems to find nothing. I'm pretty sure thats whats causing my next problem; Lag with games. I installed one of my favorite games, Blockland and ran it with Wine, First thing right off the bat is its lagging like hell. But, an even worse problem is happening. It doesn't even seem to start up now...
Alright, now let's go to java. One of my other favorite games, Minecraft, A game made with java, doesn't seem to work. I can play it for about 10 - 20 seconds until the game just turns white. There's also Dwarf Fortress, and it seems that I cant even get the linux version running. I looked at the requirements and got some of them, but not all and when I try to run it nothing even happens.
Lastly, Steam. So far steam is working fine, except when I try and install a game off of it, Steam just immediately closes... So, If you need my specs or anything just ask. I'd relaly like to fix some of these things so I use Ubuntu over windows, because I just love the feel more than windows.
I'm needing to wipe out my computer, but my only hesitation is that I've made so many awesome changes to my Ubuntu install and I don't want to lose them, since alot of it was copying/pasting terminal commands or following instructions from blogs that I didn't bookmark. Is there any way I'd be able to backup all my preferences, i.e. installed drivers, desktop configuration, basically all the little things?

I want to run both World of Warcraft and Steam under wine, but WoW won't work with the latest 195.x.x driver, and steam won't work with the previous 185.x.x driver.
Is it possible to have both installed, and to switch between them as needed for different applications? Or will I really have to choose between one or the other?
I have spent over half of the day, literally, trying to get my server to parse perl and be able to use perl scripts to interact with my SQL server. Has anyone been able to get it to work? Only looking for answers to Slackware. There are a lot of resources for FC and Ubuntu, but that does me no good. I checked the Slackbuilds for their builds, and built the libdbi and libdbi-drivers package, but still cannot get it to communicate.
View 1 Replies View RelatedDeleted my ati drivers accidently during a botched upgrade. Have been trying to fix the problem from things I read on here, made a thread but can't get online to execute it.Found my install dvd tried running repair and in the process deleted my windows partition(anyway to get that back?) and still no previous ati drivers or gnome installed.
When I boot up i see SUSE LINUX not opensuse... no grub So my question is how do I install ati drivers from the dvd and how do I install gnome or kde from install dvd? did i royally mess up and basically now just completely reinstall opensuse 11.2 completely? and if so can I recover files from my deleted windows partition and previous opensuse partition?
i have just installed opensuse 11.3 on my PC and updated all packages and all and then i installed nvidia drivers from this link SDB:NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE i downloaded the 1 click install file nvidia.ymp and installed the driver successfullybut then when i rebooted the PC for the driver to work,it doesn't work, and when i go to system>look and feel>desktop effects and i try to enable the effects i get the message that i cant enable the effects it gives me this message "Desktop effects are not supported on your hardware / configuration. Would you like to activate them anyway?" PS i say "no" to this message and it closes but i notice there is a constant use of 33% of the CPU and theres an unnamed/unknown process in the system monitor that keeps appearing and disappearing...thats quitrd because i installed opensuse 11.2 and 11.3 before and i never had these problems
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just installed ubuntu 9.04 (had the disc from before) and I'm upgrading to 9.10 of course but I have a question. How do I check that I have the latest drivers installed for everything in my laptop? View 6 Replies View RelatedThere is a laptop that I want to get that has the ATI Mobility Radeon 4100 and I cannot find it under ATI's driver downloads for any operating system.
Look for yourself [url] select notebook, then readeon, then 4100 series, for ANY operating system, it doesen't have a driver for it.
The first question is: Were is the linux driver for the 4100, and the second, if there is NO propriatary driver installed, will x take full use of the video hardware, or will it be capped and won't work to its fullest potential that it has?
I accidentally installed ATI graphics drivers on an intel graphics system. They didn't appear to install properly, because upon next boot everything was fine, except for compiz and any 3d game.
compiz-check says that I've managed to get intel back as default, but I'm still missing a rendering method.
Does anyone know how to get the renderer back? I assume it has something to do with changing the kernel? I don't know how to change the kernel anyway.
But I'm curious as to if drivers installed on Ubuntu can be moved/copied over to windows. I have been trying for weeks to get my sound card to work in my system. It's a kind of older Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 card and windows will not recognize it nor will any drivers I install work. To my surprise, I was messing with the audio options after my first ever install and test of Ubuntu (thoroughly impressed and excited btw), I noticed that my sound card was listed as a hardware option. I'd use ubuntu 24/7 if other computers, my HTPC, xbox, ect could connect to my media. I use windows for games, and such, so having the sound card installed would be a huge plus.

Well after installing ubuntu for a hour or two and trying to configure the drivers to allow Internet access with out a USB adapter using the BCM4311 I tried everything such as following the pretty basic tutorials online on installing the drivers with no luck. I check the additional drivers application and it's telling me the drivers are installed properly and are okay. ... Well, why am I not able to find a list of wifi connections yet?
I did the update command and updated every package on the machine. I reinstalled the kernal drivers for the BCM4311. I even installed the installer for the kernal device and nothing seems to be working.
