Fedora :: ATI Drivers Installed Successfully But KDE Won't Run Desktop Effects / Solve It?
Dec 8, 2010
I didn't post this thread in the hardware section because I got my ATI propitiatory drivers installed successfully and my problem seems to be with KDE. I'm trying to enable Desktop Effects for KDE.
The story is that ATI drivers installed correctly but when I go to "Application Launcher" => "System Settings" => "Desktop Effects" I can't enable Desktop effects and it has the following message:
"Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues:
Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available."
First of all I don't really know what this means. I have done some Googling around and have found a few places suggesting that I should enable the "Damage" and "Composite" extensions in my xorg.conf. I have done that, as you can see in the attached Xorg.conf file. It still doesn't work.

i m trying to fix the nvidia drivers and stuff to let Desktop Effects work. I reboot after some changes, and at first I got a kernal error message, and the Fedora froze. So I restart,, and it freezes before I even get the error message. Pop in the live cd, booted up from it so I can talk to my fedora friend, and the reboot to try again. Works, still hasn't froze, and I could get the actual error info.

I'm new to OpenSuse. Just installed it in my laptop.. Overall a great distro, I'm just getting trouble with some video aspects. I'm currently using the open-source radeon drivers. However, I can't activate desktop effects (ok..) and video playback looks choppy (sucks, I get like 3 fps). I've already tried some solutions, like installing fglrx driver (which makes my X system buggy) and trying to manually enabling DRI in xorg.conf (which didn't work).
My laptop GPU is an ATI Mobility HD5650.
Currently running OpenSuse 11.3 using KDE Desktop and radeon drivers.
Here's some of the result from my glxinfo (using auto-configured xorg, i.e., no xorg.conf):
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: No
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4
client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI
client glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (2.1 Mesa 7.8.2)

Well, wouldn't you just know it? I encountered problems when upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 with update-manager. What a surprise. Anyway, here are the problems:1. Cannot enable desktop effects. Error appears after searching for drivers.
2. 2-3 minute boot times. Used to be 40 seconds. It spends 2 *minutes* in the BIOS before actually starting Ubuntu.
3. The volume controls on my laptop's keyboard now control PCM rather than Master, so everything is horrifically loud past three clicks, and two quiet under that.
4. The bootsplash displays at 1280x800, my monitor's resolution, and looks pretty. The log in screen, however, switches to what looks like 1024x768. When I log in it changes back to 1280x800.
5. Cannot boot into Windows from grub. When I select Windows, a blinking cursor appears in the top left corner and stays there. Nothing happens

After installing ubuntu 64 bit, I installed all my updates and installed the current nvidia driver for my 9800 GTX+ from the additional drivers page. After restarting my computer, ubuntu boots into text mode. I used google and found out a couple of commands like:
After i hit control+alt+f7 it hangs on checking battery state with NO ok to the right of it. after running sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia -current and restarting the computer, the boot hangs on the ubuntu screen everytime.
My specs are:
Core i7 860
4 GB of ram
Nvidia 9800 GTX+

I tried out DockBarx on my previous Ubuntu computer and really liked it. I installed openSUSE not too long ago and I just decided it's about time to get it back! However, I'm having some trouble installing it. My initial attempt was to simply download the tarball of dockbarx from GNOME-Look, untar it and run setup.py. Unfortunately, it will not run for me..not as root, standard user, anything. I do have Python-Base installed, and my "cnf python" does return a successful response. My PATH has /python's location in it and everything.I then tried the .rpm but I need to install python-keybinder, pyxdg and dbus, but I cannot find any downloads or repo's with it. I could simply be missing it though. So, basically, I'm asking all of you who have successfully installed it on your openSUSE system to inform me on how you did it.

I have installed Fedora 12 on my laptop (Lenovo X61s) and now I have some problems with my OS. Please help me to config my machine.Currently I can not enable Desktop Effects any more. I receive this message: "Accelerated 3D graphics is not available. Desktop effects require hardware 3D support."
I'm sure that I could enable the functions of compiz when I used fedora 11 and Fedora 12-beta on my laptop before.Besides, when I represent my slides, I can not see my screen on my laptop any more. It's dark. When I used Fedora 12-beta, I can see my screen and another screen for my representation. Is my Fedora lack of some necessary packages? Is it necessary to reinstall the VGA driver? How can I do?

I've just recently come back to Fedora from OpenSuSE, where all of my compositing worked beautifully before my hard disk took a big dump. Now that I have Fedora 13 installed, I've gone through the ridiculous hassle of eliminating nouveau so that my NVIDIA drivers can do all the work. Everything seems fine except that some of the animations of desktop effects are very slow and choppy. For example, the minimize window animation looks great, but upon un-minimizing, the animation gets choppy and slow. Same with the slide animation for the dialogue windows. Transitions of the desktop cube work just fine. Show windows animation works good on zoom out, but zooming back in is slow and choppy.
I'm quite puzzled here. Originally I used the NVIDIA driver from rpmfusion. I've had troubles before (with OpenSuSE) with the version in the repos, so I tried installing the latest version from the NVIDIA website. No changes though.

After I updated to KDE 4.5.3 in Fedora 13 I've had 2 things stop starting up when I boot up. They were working fine before the KDE update.
The first is desktop effects. I turn it on, but once I reboot then desktop effects are disabled again. When I turn them on I get a KWin message that it has been turned off by another application. How can I find out which application that is and why?
The second is Yakuake, which I want to start automatically when I boot up. I don't see where I can set it up to start automatically (and I don't remember how I did it before, or if it was automatic when I installed it).
UPDATE: I just found the autostart configuration and added Yakuake. It worked, now it runs whenever I start.

how I can make desktop effects work on F11. it used to work on F10. Now I get the garbled screen every time I enable it on gnome.Google search said to disable the metacity composite manager using gconf-editor but I'm not sure I know how to do it. When I type in gconf-editor it just opens a blank configuration screen . It would be better if someone one can help me how to do it probably on the command line, also what is the equivalent of xorg.conf on F11.

I am running F11 and want to spanky up my Gnome desktop a little by adding the desktop effects. When I try to enable it, my screen flickers then returns simply "unable to enable effects".I don't know where to go from here, I tried to google this but the 15 billions hits made me weep. One link seemed to provide some hope but after following the instructions, things went totally wrong and screwed up my X server; this could be because at first I didn't realise but a default install of F11 puts the PAE kernel on.

When trying to set up desktop effects with Compiz I get this message: Accelerated 3D graphics is not available Desktop effects require hardware 3D support.
I have used Fedora 10 last year and the 3D effects worked fine. I have a Nvidia Geforce 6100 video. I also have another hdd on the PC with Mandriva 2010 which I use and the 3D compiz effects work fine. I'm running Omega 12. Isn't it Fedora 12 w/ codecs added? isn't video detection the same?
