Nvidia is standard card EHH :/
1. Are there any USB wireless (802.11) sticks that work with the standard FC13 load? The Rosewill card almost works with the DVD load but breaks with the first updates. After playing with the rt2870 and losing every time, I would just like to get a usb wireless adapter that works.
2. If there is no such animal, is there a PCI wireless card that works without a major Kabuki dance prior to setup?
3. Finally, if I do not want to me in the world of GUIs and want a bare machine to run wireless, is there some place to find how to set up a wireless network with WPA2 using the /etc/init.d/network, instead of NetworkManager.

View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday I ran updates that moved me from kernel Fedora (2.6.34.7-61.fc13.i686.PAE) to Fedora (2.6.34.7-63.fc13.i686.PAE). After reboot my system hangs trying to start X. I can use altF2 and log in that way but when I try to start X it fails - no screen found. I backed off to my previous kernel and used the package manager to remove the updated kernel and noticed that when it uninstalled it did not take any kmod packages with it. I assume not having an associated kmod may have been the problem? If so, how do I find the correct one to install?

/boot/conf/grub.conf contains:
# grub.conf generated by anaconda

# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.

When I try and boot to the newer kernel I get an error like:
Kernel panic - not syncing VFS Unable to mount root fs on unknown block(0,0)
I read on the forum about a similar problem where the fix was to insert the line
initrd /initramfs-2.6.34.7-56.fc13.i686.PAE.img
but this file doesn't exist and so the boot then hangs with no messages, so I took this line out again. Here is contents of /boot:
$ ls -l

As you may deduce from the above I haven't used the system much so the auto-update hasn't run for several months.
Any help on running / installing the newer kernel appreciated. Note that I am trying to install a wireless LAN card and am following instructions here: url
I got as far as
cd /lib/modules/`uname -r`
ls -l
which gave:
[root@localhost 2.6.33.5-112.fc13.i686.PAE]# ls -l
total 3300

so I have the src files for the newer kernel not the one I am running. I thought it best to stop and think (and ask for help!) rather than break a working machine (but with no wireless LAN!)

After this, I tried: 'sudo yum install kernel-devel kernel-headers'
To rectify this, but hit this error "No package kernel-devel available" (and the same for the headers). What should I do?

I am guessing it has to do with the rpmfusion servers/mirrors? I just want to install the propreitary wireless and graphics card drivers, can this be done without using rpmfusion? (i.e. alternatives to kmod-wl and kmod-nvidia)
Something I haven't see explained or discussed here. On a new install should we do a full update and then setup the rpmfusion repositories or setup the rpmfusion repositories and then do a full update?
View 6 Replies View RelatedJust wondering whether there are plans to upgrade the x264 in the rpmfusion repo to a more recent build. These are the current ones in rpmfusion and what I have installed. Build date is October 2009.

Unfortunately things like h264enc and I'm sure others have moved on ahead and the dependencies on the x264 libraries means things like ffmpeg, mencoder, gstreamer, vlc, avidemux are having issues. With major dependencies it's difficult to upgrade the individiual components. A couple of examples, ffmpeg requires a newer build as it has some issues with MS's dvr-ms format. Apparently it was fixed in a newer release of the code. Another is some of the encode parameters in x264 being used in h264enc such as "weightp", "mbtree" which appear to be only supported in newer versions of the x264 libraries. Any chance that this is being looked at and newer and more recent builds of x264, and then I suspect with mencoder, ffmpeg etc...?
I opened a bug report on this in the RPMFusion bugzilla and other people have asked on the mailing list over there, without an answer.why the Fedora 14 repos are empty? See: [URl] Both i386 and x86_64 are empty in both the free and nonfree trees. Though strangely the updates trees for F14 are populated.

Now that the F15 repos at RPMFusion are there, I should move off Rawhide, correct? And this is as simple as removing the existing repo files from /etc/yum.repos.d and then installing the new ones from RPMFusion? No extra steps necessary?

I have read a similar thread in this forum, but I have not understood a single line of that discussion.
I'm trying to get my 7800GS (AGP) working in Fedora 12. The default driver from NVIDIA will not install at all. Gives an error about nvidia.ko.
So I've tried to go kmod-nvidia. I followed this thread [url].
I ran a 'yum update' to get the latest everything. Reset, typed in rdblacklist=nouveau, reset, then tried 'yum install kmod-nvidia-PAE' it worked!
But now the computer does not have a screen. I had to SSH in to edit inittab to be runlevel 3.
How to get this nVIDIA driver installed?!
I am wondering if there is someone who have succeeded in installing the driver for nVidia GT 330M from RPMFusion in Fedora 13.
I followed the instructions here [url], namely,
1. recreate the initrd manually
2.yum install kmod-nvidia-PAE
It didn't work. I also tried the method mentioned at the section 'Troubleshooting', but it did not either.
The trouble I encountered after rebooting is : The progress bar changed from an icon at the center to three lines at bottom. After the three lines reached at the end, the whole screen just went to blank.
I am guessing that the three lines, instead of the icon, only shows if your video card is not so powerful. And In my case, the reason could be the driver didn't work properly.
I use Fedora 15.Not sure if I understand how EPEL is related to rpmfusion. Is EPEL a branch of rpmfusion or are they a completely different projects? What other major 3-rd party repositories would you recommend for Fedora?
View 2 Replies View RelatedHaving downloaded the DVD iso which failed to burn correctly I decided to try a live X86_64 iso, and installed from that. This was fine and I had set everything up apart from the nvidia drivers( nouveau worked but with no 3d for desktop effects). The card is a 7300LE and was working fine with kmod-nvida in F12. Following the instructions that leigh provides a howto for as usual I thought I would finish off the install. However I had several errors show up, which unfortuantely I did not keep a note of concerning dracut. On the restart the install was trashed, just froze solid in plymouth. Having been here before I decided that I would just do a complete reinstall again and investigate further what is going wrong later.
Having now a really nice slick F13 with all my servers set up etc and now running under nouveau I have just decided to check out dracut dependencies with the following: rpm -qR dracut-005-3.fc13
This gives:
Checking through the list of installed software I am unable to locate the following:
Though rpmlib is installed which may well be for the various rpmlib()'s above, I cannot see any package for fileutils, mktemp or mount in the repo's.
I could not find them I had to go use Ubuntu just for 3d acceleration.
Any info on where to get the drivers? Nvidia Geforce 5200 FX
I would prefer to be able to use the rpmfusion nvidia driver instead of the closed driver but when I try it, KDE4 runs fine for a while but then the whole display starts blinking and the cpu % goes to 99% for XMy PC is Fedora 12 x86_64, the video card is a XFX 8800GT[URL]1) installed the kmod-nvidia-190.53-1.fc12.1.x86_64 and dependencies2) blocked nouveau with rdblacklist=nouveau in grub.conf, 3) Ran: setsebool -P allow_execstack on4) fixed the xorg.conf (I had to move my old xorg.conf out of the way and merged my DontZap option back in)
5) rebootedI did not yum remove the nouveau driver,.... didn't seem necessary. My desktop will run for a while but inevitably starts flashing uncontrollably. I can't even ssh to it to run init 3 to kill X (I can ssh to it but for some reason I can't su to root to kill X).
The driver has crashed X and before I had a chance to find RPMfusion instructions on dealing with initrd, I removed the package just to keep X running.Uninstalling the package does not restore kernel and Xorg operation. I am still in VESA mode.Although they claim they don't put stuff in non-standard places and use RPM, still there is something left over, as nuoveau driver no longer loads. Now that system configuration is all over the place, it is not clear what they actually changed or replaced.
