I'm trying to get 5.1 surround sound working on my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop running Fedora 13 (64 bit), but there is no option for it under "Sound Preferences - Hardware - Profile". There is an option for "Analog Surround 4.0 Output", which does as it says and uses four of the speakers (front and rear left and right) correctly (and the subwoofer as well I think, though not sure if this is done correctly).Running "aplay -L" gives the following:
Quote: default Default frontARD=Intel,DEV=0 HDA Intel, STAC92xx Analog Front speakers surround40ARD=Intel,DEV=0
[Code]...
it looks like it should be possible to set 5.1 surround sound (i.e. I don't think it's a driver issue).Though running "speaker-test -c 6" doesn't quite work as it should - it outputs via the subwoofer on "Center" and doesn't produce any sound on "LFE". But to start with at least - is there a way of manually forcing "Analog Surround 5.1 Output" to be a choice under "Sound Preferences"?
I have no sound in normal profile but when I log in to the root account I DO have sound using say Banshee, kaffeine. In other words it is not a hardware malfunction or not detected. I am sure it has to do with some rights (permissions) for the peripherals that the user or profile may not have.
I appear to be experiencing an annoying issue with my soundcard. As you can see from the images below, the soundcard is detected, but not when it comes to the "output". This is only affecting one user (my admin account is fine, as was a new user set up to test it).
I've looked at this page and have attempted reinstalling alsa, but to no success.
The results from aplay -l are:
Quote:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

"stevek" being the user that I'm having difficulty with. I suspect that I might need to recreate part of my user profile, but I'm not sure where start.
i've not been able to find a solution to my issue. I have a Gateway Profile 5 All-in-One with built in speakers. Just finished a fresh install to 9.10 and all updates. I can hear sound through the headphone jack via headphones, but the internal speakers will not play anything. I've checked the volume controls, alsamixer, etc.
I've already gotten into the .mozilla folder and found the profiles.ini file. My windows XP system has it's Documents and Settings folder on a seperate drive (D:Documents and settings) And I've located the profile (application datamozillafirefoxprofiles) Now all I need to do is put the path into the profiles.ini file in the .mozilla folder in Ubuntu. The problem is I don't know exactly how to format it.
In windows the path is:
How would I translate this into something ubuntu "follows?" I already have the profile name changed as well.
There is .profile under my directory and I found another one under /etc/ . I know the first one is the one we edit for path and alias and stuff. but how does it differ from the one in /etc?
I am just started to setting up a samba PDC at our office.MY problem is my xp client is logging in to server but not loading the profile.its booting with tmp profile and whatever the changes I do in that profile.its not updating that in the server. And my client.log file is showing following error. '/home/user4' does not exist or permission denied when connecting to [user4] Error was Permission denied. I gave full right to /home/user4.But still its giving this error. User4 is given same password for linux and samba. How can I add a profile of user to smb pdc?
So I've always added an export line in the /etc/profile that has the proxy server for our organization. Now there is a warning in that file that I should use a custom .sh in the profile.d folder. Can I just create a myproxy.sh with the export http_proxy="insert my proxy" line in it and call it a day or do I have to do some crazy shell script?
I can do su - and then type in my root password and then change users, but if I try to log in to the root profile, the same password doesn't work. What can I do to reset the root profile password?
Is there a way to include a profile pic within the GUI login prompt for Fedora 11?
I have the profile pic set in the "About Me" configuration page, and this will show up in my toolbar in the upper right hand corner, but when I log out and go to select my login name from the list of users within the login prompt, I don't see my pic, just the generic user picture.
Is there a way to set this? I have multiple users using this machine. It would be nice if they can just visually scan for their picture to login with.
modifying the default liveuser settings (IE: ~/.gconf, ~/.mozilla) in a ReMix.
I have been trying to get this working without much luck. I can easily add individual files in a (%post -nochroot) block, but when I try and recursively copy directory structures such as the above, I get masses of errors as GNOME loads.
The UID and GID are correct for the liveuser account, so I don't know what's up. I've tried this method using Sabayon to create the account, and by directly copying the modified (running) liveuser directories to a usb stick then rebooting to do the livecd-creator work.
90% of what I want done can be done inside the (%post) block with echo, cat, sed, awk, and gconftool-2, but for my needs it's easier to simply keep the modified profile handy and copy it to where it needs to be.
I have a fresh install of Fedora 13 64 bit. I am unable to create VPN profiles in network manager as a normal user.
To test: Logging in with gnome as root, I am able to create a VPN profile in Network Manager Logging in with KDE as root, I am not able to create a VPN profile in Network Connections.
Problem: Logging in as a normal user with KDE, I am not able to create a VPN profile in Network Connections. On the VPN tab, the Add... button is greyed out.
What is required to add VPN connections under KDE on Fedora 13?
I installed java and now I was to set some environment variables.
So I created a file called java.sh and placed it in /etc/profile.d
I gave the file 755 permissions and made it executable.
When I logged out, to get the changes to take, and try to log back in I cannot.
I enter my user name and password in the greeter, the screen goes black for a moment, and then the greeter comes back. Same if I try to log in as any user, including root. I'm in this endless loop of entering user/pass and then the screen going away for a second and then getting prompted for user/pass all over again.

I can successfully connect to a remote Windows Computer using Terminal Server Client but I cannot save the profile (Fedora 12).This means I have to enter the details every time I wish to connect. As I have many different remote locations I need to access on a regular basis is there any way to save the profiles?
I seem to be missing drivers for my Gateway laptop MA7. I have looked in System->Admin->Hardware Drivers, but it does not show up in there. There are also no devices listed in Sound->Hardware. I'm guessing at this point that I don't have the driver installed.
Since doing an upgrade from Koala to Lynx, my volume control (up in the top right corner of the screen) has vanished. I can still mute and control volume by going into the Sound menu in Preferences, but I really miss having it on the taskbar.
the sound preferences menu, the one that's achieved by system>preferences>sound is completely gone, and so is the volume control that amarok/rhythmnbox connect too, that has that shortcut link to the sound preferences?
I have 11.2 installed on a dual core 64 bit system. The sound works when I use Yast to look at the sound device and select "play test sound". I haven't gotten anything out of Amarok or SMPlayer. I followed the guide listed in other posts to update the system although I could not seem to solve all the dependences. When I use SMPlayer to play an MP3 file, I get a message saying that I am missing libdirectfb-1.1.so.0
I tried the following: Code: ldd /usr/bin/mplayer | grep libdirect libdirectfb-1.1.so.0 => not found This seems to be the only missing library. The interesting thing is that if I search my system for libdirect, I find that I have libdirectfb-1.2.so.0. Is this a newer rev or a different library because of my platform?
I've never had any problems before, but I just did a fresh install of 10.04.1 on a brand new drive yesterday. I noticed this morning that I have no sound drivers(under the hardware tab of sound preferences, there is nothing listed). I found a thread that had this line to run:
Code: cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec And I got: Code: Codec: Realtek ALC888 Not sure what to do now though.
I have an annoying problem. It started with the network icon in the indicator applet in gnome-panel. It just disappeared! Somehow I managed to get my network icon back (perhaps after a restart), but as soon as it showed up, my sound icon disappeared.
I followed some advice I saw somewhere that said to add another indicator applet. When I did I had my network icon on my pre-existing indicator applet and a sound indicator in the new one, but no network icon. Because I needed the sound icon, I closed the original. But, I'm still stuck with no network icon now. This is pretty frustrating.
I was having issues with the mic or line in on my onboard sound card, while trying to get my tvtuner patched in, later I gave OSS a try, I could not get it to work and decided to go back to Alsa, now my soundcard is not functioning.I have followed quite a few different guides, one of which is the sticky, please forgive me for not remembering which guides. I'm going nuts over this.As you can see below it looks like it is still using the oss driver.
uname -a Linux freekbox 2.6.31-21-generic #59-Ubuntu SMP Wed Mar 24 07:28:56 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I want to record a streaming-audio (not capture), to use an alarm sound. I opened up gnome-sound-recorder, but I don't see input drop-down menu. I tried Audacity, but it's missing the menu, too.I saw the specification sheet of my laptop, but it only says Mobile Intel GS45 Express Chipsets, I'm not sure if it manages sound, too, but the sheet doesn't have any information about sound chip set.dd: It seems like I can't change this to 'solved'. I cannot say it is solved, as I don't yet see the drop-down menu in gnome-sound-recorder, but with PulseAudio I can perform the task, so it can be regarded as solved?
Fresh install Ububtu 10.10 x64. User1: Notification area shows network icon but no sound icon User2: Notification area shows sound icon but no network icon
Removing the Notification area from panel and add it back doesn't solve the problem. Is there any settings to tell what to put in the notification area?
