Fedora Hardware :: How To Install Old Version Of NVidia Drivers From RPMfusion

Nov 5, 2010

The actual nvidia driver version (260.1912) does not work for my laptop (a Sony Vaio F11 series type, see bottom of page [URL]), I would like to install an older version (e.g. 256.53). Up to now, I cannot figure out how to tell yum to pick up an older version. Is there a way to do this (because kmod-nvidia is a meta package, there may be problems?), or do I have to install 256.53 manually (using the installer provided by nvidia)?

Fedora Hardware :: Nvidia Drivers From RPMfusion Working But Slow In F14?

Nov 3, 2010

After upgrading from Fedora 13 to 14 via preupgrade (works well), the nvidia drivers for my "nVidia Corporation GT218 [NVS 3100M] (rev a2)" (it's a ThinkPad T410S) work - including 3D, but every thing paints slowly. The Desktop Effects work, but everything visual (menus painting, dragging windows, etc.) are all noticeably slow (and worked fine in F13).

Update - apparently this issue is related to the GTK theme in use. The default (Fedora, or Clearlooks, or a few others) results in this slow behaviour. Other themes, like Nodoka and a few others perform fine.

Fedora :: Old Version Of X264 On RPMfusion

Jan 25, 2010

Just wondering whether there are plans to upgrade the x264 in the rpmfusion repo to a more recent build. These are the current ones in rpmfusion and what I have installed. Build date is October 2009.

Code:
x264.x86_64
0.0.0-0.24.20090319gitc109c8.fc11 @rpmfusion-free
x264-devel.x86_64
0.0.0-0.24.20090319gitc109c8.fc11 @rpmfusion-free
x264-libs.x86_64
0.0.0-0.24.20090319gitc109c8.fc11 installed
Available Packages x264-devel.i586 0.0.0-0.24.20090319gitc109c8.fc11
rpmfusion-free
x264-libs.i586
0.0.0-0.24.20090319gitc109c8.fc11
rpmfusion-free

Unfortunately things like h264enc and I'm sure others have moved on ahead and the dependencies on the x264 libraries means things like ffmpeg, mencoder, gstreamer, vlc, avidemux are having issues. With major dependencies it's difficult to upgrade the individiual components. A couple of examples, ffmpeg requires a newer build as it has some issues with MS's dvr-ms format. Apparently it was fixed in a newer release of the code. Another is some of the encode parameters in x264 being used in h264enc such as "weightp", "mbtree" which appear to be only supported in newer versions of the x264 libraries. Any chance that this is being looked at and newer and more recent builds of x264, and then I suspect with mencoder, ffmpeg etc...?

I would prefer to be able to use the rpmfusion nvidia driver instead of the closed driver but when I try it, KDE4 runs fine for a while but then the whole display starts blinking and the cpu % goes to 99% for XMy PC is Fedora 12 x86_64, the video card is a XFX 8800GT[URL]1) installed the kmod-nvidia-190.53-1.fc12.1.x86_64 and dependencies2) blocked nouveau with rdblacklist=nouveau in grub.conf, 3) Ran: setsebool -P allow_execstack on4) fixed the xorg.conf (I had to move my old xorg.conf out of the way and merged my DontZap option back in)
5) rebootedI did not yum remove the nouveau driver,.... didn't seem necessary. My desktop will run for a while but inevitably starts flashing uncontrollably. I can't even ssh to it to run init 3 to kill X (I can ssh to it but for some reason I can't su to root to kill X).

Fedora Installation :: Completely Remove RPMfusion Nvidia Driver?

Aug 14, 2010

The driver has crashed X and before I had a chance to find RPMfusion instructions on dealing with initrd, I removed the package just to keep X running.Uninstalling the package does not restore kernel and Xorg operation. I am still in VESA mode.Although they claim they don't put stuff in non-standard places and use RPM, still there is something left over, as nuoveau driver no longer loads. Now that system configuration is all over the place, it is not clear what they actually changed or replaced.

Fedora Hardware :: Install Nvidia Drivers For 8800 Card?

Jul 8, 2010

A few years back I gave linux a try. It was fun but eventually I dropped it because simple tasks like installing software were always a practice in goose hunting and copy/paste command marathons. I am trying again to get fedora up and going. Thinking many of the old methods would be cleaned up by now. I was trying to install nvidia drivers for my 8800 card.

I download the *.run file and it tells me I need to disable "X...etc" so I init 3 to the command prompt and run the *.run file there. Then the installer says.... "hey buddy.. you need gcc to make this work". ok.. I type init 5 to get back to the internet browser. So I search about google for a few moments and then find the yum command for getting gcc installed. Run the gcc and again... init 3 to get back to the command prompt and run the *.rn file for the nvidia drivers. This time the installer says... "hey man... you need the kernel source tree".

CentOS 5 :: Can't Install Nvidia Drivers (Unable To Load The Kernel Module "nvidia.ko")?

Jul 28, 2009

So I have been trying to install these drivers forever and after going through a million forum posts and Google searches I have been unsuccessful. The process I have been trying starts as such: I hit ctrl-alt-f1 and then login as root. i then change to run level 3 by doing /sbin/init 3. After that's done I cd to desktop and do sh NVIDIA-LINUX-x86-185.18.29-pkg1.run --kernel-source-path /usr/src/kernel/2.6.18-128.2.1.el15-i686

If I don't give it the source path it can't find the source tree. Eventually I get the error: ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This happens most frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from

Fedora Hardware :: How To Install "older" Nvidia 195 Drivers

Sep 17, 2010

The drivers from rpmfusion are the 256.xx version drivers. Unfortunately I have two games from LGP - X2 "the treat" and X3 "Reunion", and those games have BIG problems with the newer 256 drivers. So - I am forced to install the "older" 195.xx range drivers (the last ones that behaved good). The problem is - I cannot use rpmfusion for that -they have only the latest drivers and no older ones-, so I amd forced to download the drivers and install everything by hand.

At first I tought "no problem". I have done that before with other distro's like Mandriva, openSUE, PCLinuxOS etc. and never had any trouble. It was just a case of installing the kernel headers, developmenpackages, compile the driver and tweak the xorg.conf file. After a restart everything works as I wanted. With Fedora 13 however it seems not to go that easy. The first try resulted in a lock-up - even to a point I could not use Ctrl+Alt+F"x" to switch to a terminal. By the way - I "disabled" the nouveau driver in the grub startup configuration, but that also did not helped one bit. This is weird, as compiling did not give any error and I have to assume that part was going ok. I really have no idea what is going wrong here.
