Fedora Hardware :: Burn DVD Is Very Slow On F12?
Apr 10, 2010
I'm trying to burn a DVD on Fedora 12 using:
- a LG BH08LS20 [ BR burner ] (either SATA or USB)
- a LiteOn LDW-851S [ DVD burner ] (USB)
It's slow (reported speed of 0.3x). The same burner in windohz or Ubuntu gives full speed. The LG is new but the LiteOn burner was working fine on previous Fedora.

i have a file that i'm trying to burn and for some reason when the burn process completes i get the following error message: Error while burning. You do not have the required permissions to use this drive.i'm not sure why this is happening- is there something i have to set/enable to be able to use my DVD drive? i am using brasero to burn my dvd, and it appears that the failure occurs during the verification process.

Both my cd/dvd drives work fine out of xp so they're connected properly.
I tried to use Brasero to burn an iso to a cd; Brasero responds with the message "Please replace the disc with a supported CD or DVD." But my Sony and Maxell discs should be supported, so what could be causing this message?
Is the bash command cdrecord an alternative to Bresaro? If so then what is the command syntax to burn file.iso to a cd in a cd/dvd drive?

So, I've been using Brasero to burn cds with no problems, but when I try to burn a DVD video, it starts converting the file mpeg-2 then just hangs about half way through. I tried it like 5 times and then moved on to Bombona, which I heard was great. When I start the burn process for a DVD video with Bombono, it just says "DVD-video building broken ffmpeg failure." its driving me nuts, this shouldnt be so complicated. I havent run into others with this problem, so Im assuming Ive just missed something obvoius.

I have a clean Linux box on which I want to install Fedora 10.I downloaded the 3.6GB ISO file (Fedora-10-i386-DVD) onto my Windows Vista machine, and then installed ISO Recorder, with which I burned the image to a DVD.I was surprised that the image took only about 10 minutes to burn, maybe less. When I then tried to install Fedora 10 on the Linux box from the DVD, after a minute of checking devices and such, it says "Error loading operating system." It goes no further.I'm thinking that the technique I used to burn ISO into the DVD was insufficient. I followed the instructions I found in the ISO readme for burning with the ISO Recorder V2 Power Toy:Obtain and install the ISO Recorder power toy from the
1. In the file manager Explorer, right click on the first Fedora ISO file.2. In the context menu, select Copy image to CD.3. Follow the steps given by the CD Recording Wizard pop-up.4. Repeat for the remaining ISO files.Actually, the ISO Recorder I downloaded said nothing about being a "power toy"--it was ISO Recorder V3.1 - for Windows Vista/Windows 7. But the wizard gave no choice of specifying which in the ISO were boot code vs. package code. It was basically a one-click burn. I just selected Image File (Fedora-10-i386-DVD.iso) and clicked Next. I expected there would be a step for specifying something about boot code. Or, when you install Fedora from

Update:so I can burn DVD+Rs fine. I burned Fedora 14 originally on this machine (in F13), although I'll have to check to see what kind of disks I was using.
Here is my posting from unix.stackexchange.com:
I have been trying to burn a few ISOs lately with no success and have certainly used this hardware in the past, so I am not sure what's going on. I am using DVD-R media (tried multiple discs) which appears to be supported by my drive. Here is the error I received in GnomeBaker on Fedora 14 (64):
Code:
Executing 'builtin_dd if=/home/tja/Downloads/Torrents/bodhi_0.1.6.iso of=/dev/sr0 obs=32k seek=0'
:-[ PERFORM OPC failed with SK=2h/CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT]: Wrong medium type

I read in the F11 install guide that you can download a install iso image and then do an internet install. Since my F11 DVD hasn't arrived yet; I downloaded that ISO ; and figured it'd be a quicker install anyway, since that way I'd avoid having to download all the updates after the DVD install.I have a USB CD-RW drive attached to my laptop, currently running F7. Almost all of the instructions I see for burning a CD image are for Win users and Win software. I did download Brasero and it's acting flaky; it seems to want to unmount my CDRW drive, even when I'm logged in as root; so it doesn't give me that option to burn to that disk.
I found K3B, but that's for KDE and I'm using Gnome -- is there any good CD burning software (with a link please?) I can use?

this dam program was working fine till I received some updates.why would we update if it just makes things worse the list of thing wrong with this os is growing like not being able to burn an iso without downloading gnome baker. video is just **** and gets worse with every xorg update pulse is like the old cereal commercial snap crackle and pop usb mounting problems to no end never ming trying to burn a Decent dvd now that I vented lol does anyone know of a fix for aramok crashing all the time while playing a song.this only started after I got some updates
I'll tell you one thing the guy who started that thread asking way we have not switched from windows yet should be hung by his gonads for sure like there is ever any chance of replacing windows with errors like this funny this is only a few the list marches on it get s bigger never smaller. The iso burning problem has been around for years now. thats all I can say is there should be a lot of **** flying upstream at xorg pulse and everyone else there work of late sucks as far as bug corrections and proper driver support
I know it 's not fedora is mostly upstream but don't we think its time for someone to say something about this garbage flowing down to us Any how if anyone knows how to get arormoko stop crashing every song. I find they work great when the first come out then the updates hit and it time to dump it for something newer

I am getting ready to go to FC14. Yesterday I downloaded both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions -dvd iso. When I tried to burn the images with K3B I got the message 'No Optical drvice found'. Shut off my PC and rebooted this morning. The first thing I did was I tried to burn the 32 bit version with K3B. It worked. Went off and installed it - no problem. I came back to burn the 64 bit version. K3B says "No optical drive found'. K3b (and/or Fedora) lost connection with my optical drives - a DVD-Writer and DVD reader. I have put cds into the drives and tried to open the cds with File Browser with no luck.
Some pertinent data:
[root@Vince vince]# cat /etc/fstab
#
# /etc/fstab
# Created by anaconda on Mon Aug 17 15:12:43 2009
#
# Accessible filesystems, by reference, are maintained under '/dev/disk'
# See man pages fstab(5), findfs(8), mount(8) and/or vol_id(8) for more info
[Code].....
I looked in messages and found no references after the successful burning of the 32 bit dvd. Nothing to indicate why Fedora lost contact with the dvd writer. What else is needed to fix this? I think that if I reboot, I will have access to both drives again. If that happens, I will burn the 64 bit iso and look into updating my system.

I'm an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and I've always upgraded my system (NOT fresh install). Everything went fine, but yesterday I upgraded to Lucid. My only concern -for now- deals with startup time. I'm a desktop user (Core2@3GHz) so I think I should boot in less than 10 seconds. Anyway, boot time is 30 seconds - not too much, but there is definetly something wrong with tools I don't know (ureadahead, plymouth, etc.). Attached is my bootchart: can anyone explain me what's wrong?
Also, I don't even see a plymouth Ubuntu themed bootsplash: I only see a blank (black) screen standing for seconds, then I see the bootsplash for less then half a second, then GDM appears :S Not crucial -I know- but how can I fix it? (I don't know if it's related, but I can see the animation at shutdown)Finally, GNOME desktop takes too long to load. I don't know why, but there are 15/30 seconds in between login sound and a usable desktop (with panels and icons, I mean). Please help me, I don't want to do a fresh install. Boot speed is not a dial with desktops - I know - but it can be a symptom that my system is a bit a messy (and I don't like it, since I installed Jaunty less then 1 year ago). (!Forgot! I also installed grub2 by hand

I recently tried to burn an ISO image to a DVD. Everything seemed to be going fine except Brasero froze at "Finalizing". It stayed there for about 10 minutes before I gave up. When I hit cancel nothing happened. When I tried to eject the drive nothing happened. Not until I shut the computer down and restarted was I able to open my DVD drive. Upon trying to read the disc no computer shows that it has anything on it.

There is a command that you can type into the terminal that would "burn" an iso image to a storage device (usb). In ubuntu, this command would be <dd if=(path leading to iso) of=(device to be "burned" to)> Is this the same in Fedora, or is it a different command?

Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!
When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!
This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.
