There is a command that you can type into the terminal that would "burn" an iso image to a storage device (usb). In ubuntu, this command would be <dd if=(path leading to iso) of=(device to be "burned" to)> Is this the same in Fedora, or is it a different command?

I have a problem with this modem. when i installed required packages for this device like usbswitch, wvdial etc, my internet connect works fine but as i switch off the PC and restart, PC can not detect the modem, it detect as mass storage device. Is there any command/option that i switch the mass storage device into modem in the terminal window or on the GUI platform mean on the desktop screen.

I have some file data with size about 2G and I want to burn (write) this file to DVD rewrite.
I know linux OS can install software to burn data to DVD, but I don't have permission to install more software. I only use command line over Terminal (Gnome Terminal).
I dont have under system->admin networking, but i do have netwroking tools (I have the latest version of ubuntu) and I am wondering - what command can i type in to the terminal to see the dns information? also can I install "network" for ubuntu?

I read in the F11 install guide that you can download a install iso image and then do an internet install. Since my F11 DVD hasn't arrived yet; I downloaded that ISO ; and figured it'd be a quicker install anyway, since that way I'd avoid having to download all the updates after the DVD install.I have a USB CD-RW drive attached to my laptop, currently running F7. Almost all of the instructions I see for burning a CD image are for Win users and Win software. I did download Brasero and it's acting flaky; it seems to want to unmount my CDRW drive, even when I'm logged in as root; so it doesn't give me that option to burn to that disk.
I found K3B, but that's for KDE and I'm using Gnome -- is there any good CD burning software (with a link please?) I can use?

However at the same time a mouse or a keypad may/could have a usb connection. note that root should be able to use the usb storage devices. How can the same be done on fedora 12? I would prefer not to do it via the BIOS options.

I have my machine, a laptop, connected to my family's router for an internet connection and a wired connection to a personal router for a faster and private connection between my other two computers and a network storage device. Whenever the laptop is connected to my personal router everything goes through it and it can't connect to any external web sites. But when I unplug it and go only on my family's wireless everything is fine, except I can't connect to the storage device since it has no external connections.

I use CentOS for the servers I am responsible for. This time, I inherited a piece of hardware that CentOS refused to boot up on, so I installed Fedora Core 14. I have NIS and autofs working -- mostly.The home directories reside on an EMC network storage device. The problem is that when I login as a regular user, all the files under the home directory are owned by nobody/nobody, instead of user/group. I believe this has something to do with NFSv3 vs. v4, but I have yet to find the right trick to fix it.

I have a drive that I am going to use for media storage, but i am not sure which filesystem type to choose. It was originally ext2 since it had Fedora on it once before, but I want something that is accessible (ie read/write) from a Windows system. I think as long as I share the mount via Samba or something I should not need to worry about the type of system it is.Before thinking, I chose fat32 until I remember the limitations. Since this drive will be mounted by Fedora, I believe I should stick with ext*, but I'm not sure which to choose.

We new have server with VmWare ESXi4.1 and we created virtual machine with CentOS5.6.This CentOS5.6 virtual machine will be used as webserver. We need to backup all files and have access to these files. We are going to keep all websites, databases, backups on data storage (NetApp FAS2000 series).
We have two options to how to use this storage:
1: We can mount storage volume directly to CentOS5.6 by NFS.
2: We can add storage via NFS to VmWare and then add new virtual disks to CentOS5.6 by VmWare vSphere client.
What option would you recommend to use? Which option is better, faster and more secure? My thoughts:If we mount storage volume directly to CentOS5.6 so we can access .snapshot directory there is all snapshots. So it's easy to access all backed up files. NetApp has snapshot system and we can schedule to make snapshots automatically, so we don't need to setup any additional backup utilities in CentOS5.6. But we don't have any NetApp snapshot restoring software license so copy/paste from .snapshot directory is only option.
If we add storage to VmWare firstly (by NFS) and then add new virtual hard disks to CentOS5.6 by VmWare vSphere client so we have to setup rsnapshot(or any similar utility) to make backups in CentOS5.6. But NetApp will also make backups of .vmdk files. So it's like double backups, lol :) If storage crashes so we screwed in both ways, I think.
From the terminal, or a script, how can I determine the media type (CDDA, DVD, ISO, etc) of a mounted optical disc? I need this for an automated script on my headless media server - Fedora 12 64bit.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently tried to burn an ISO image to a DVD. Everything seemed to be going fine except Brasero froze at "Finalizing". It stayed there for about 10 minutes before I gave up. When I hit cancel nothing happened. When I tried to eject the drive nothing happened. Not until I shut the computer down and restarted was I able to open my DVD drive. Upon trying to read the disc no computer shows that it has anything on it.

For some time, I have been trying to install fedora 14 on my pc, as I want a dual boot machine. It has windows xp already installed and running. I used liveusb creator to make a bootable usb. the problem is, when I log in and start the installer, it runs until I get the option "Select storage device". When I select the appropriate option , basic storage device, the installer screen disappears, and nothing more happens. I shall be much obliged if someone can point out the problem. My computer is a Dell optiplex 745 , 2.8 GHz with 512 Mb of RAM.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI was testing a bug in F12+Acer Aspire One and its 'suspend' feature (you can probably find the thread) and I ended with my SDHC card messed up. I formatted it as ext2 (or ext3, don't remember exactly) and apparently its superblock got corrupted. For one thing there is a single file I want to recover from the card (I don't mind formatting it afterwards). I am no expert using e2fsck or fsck, that's why I am asking here. In addition I used the "dd" command to create a backup of the drive in a file (so I can start tinkering with it). What is the best course of action to recover my files? Either from the card or from the image?

I tried brasero and k3b, but, after burning, I cannot read the disks on my PC or DVD player...
Why can't I burn image with k3b After I' ve tried to burn it it says: "Completed succesfully". But when I then check my DVD, there's absolutely NOTHING on it... and there it says:"0 Objects"It seems like it has only got a new label.And burning an image should else be one of the most easy things in life...And it SEEMS very easy when reading a tutorial.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI created a ISO under DeVeeDee and went to burn it with Brasero (also tried with K3B) and they both came up with error messages.k3b comes up with "Internal error. Short read! Please report" and stops at around 3% and 3-4 minutes into burning. The same error happens under Brasero, it'll stop after a few minutes.
