Fedora :: Gnome - Kde Freezes On Logout F12 & F13 / Sort It?
May 26, 2010
I've read some past issues with this and was wondering if anyone else has issues with F12 / F13.
When I logout of gnome or kde on a fresh install of Fedora 13 the panels disapear but I never receive the log on window. I cannot switch to command either the screen is locked completely.
I havn't run updates or anything, the install is nearly out of box except for the installation of kde.. The issue existed before I installed kde, I was hoping it didn't have this issue lol. fat chance of that..
Anyone aware of any fix's? Or what the issue is?

When I click logout under the user menu (top right), the confirmation dialogue appears, and I can click Logout. the dialogue disappears and it starts to logout normally... then it just stops. it freezes once the top toolbar disappears. my tint2 bar stays visable, as well as my desktop background, and i can move my cursor around, but it wont respond to my keyboard. After just letting it stay like that for a few minutes, nothing changes, it doesn't even dim the screen or go to sleep, it just sits there.
I can shutdown and switch users just fine, just not logout.

We are having a cluster with couple of disk servers, compute nodes and a head node. Disk server is nfs mounted on all the compute and head nodes.
The problem is that if any of the disk servers hangs, it freezes rest of the cluster too which is dangerous. Ideally, cluster should not care about the hanged server and run without any problem except files from that server is not visible.
Is there any way I could avoid the problem of freezing cluster because of one hanged server?

Lenovo X200 notebook, 64bit maverick, external monitor connected through DisplayPort, fast SSD drive, encrypted homeI'm almost positive these issues were non existent after installing 10.10RC, but I'm not 100% sure. Maybe I will install it again to check it outAnyway, when I try to suspend/restart/shutdown/logout the system often freezes, showing the console with the similar output:I know this guy is running Ubuntu in VM, but I have very similar ouput, except the last usplash line. But the first line I always have in the output is the infamousQuote:GLIb-WARNING **: getpwid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)On a very rare occassion, the system hanged while booting (showing the above glib line as well. But that's quite rare, so I'm not that concerned.
Now, sometimes it does respond to ctrl+alt+delete after freezing, and after I hit this combination, another line appears (from memory):Quote:Init: rc main process killed by TERM signalChecking for running unattended-upgradesBut that's it, I cannot do anything else, only hard reset, which is especially painful when I suspend in the middle of work...There is no interesting information in the logs - a few messages in the kern.log, but nothing I think would show the culpritEDIT: other than that, the machine is very stable and I have no issues with it. It also worked perfectly on lucid 32bit.

I have a problem with garbled graphics after resuming from hibernate or logging out (when the screen blinks and goes back to the display manager). It only occurs when I do either, about half the time. What happens is the edges of everything "bleed" horizontally (left to right) in red and green colors and black text on a white background becomes entirely unreadable (but white text on a black background is readable and just looks a little bolder). If I shut down or restart the computer (softly) when the screen has garbled, then it will freeze and not even the SysRq keys work (I have enabled it in /etc/sysctl.conf). Then the only thing left is to do a hard restart (in which case there's a voice saying "System failed VGA test" before BIOS/GRUB loads) or poweroff. Powering it off and then starting it again works fine. I did a google image search and this is sort of how it looks when it freezes: link
Once the screen has garbled (but only if it hasn't frozen) I can use SysRq to issue S E S I S U O to shut it off and then power it on, and that works: then I get a non-garbled command line after sigterm and it shuts off and starts up properly. If I issue B instead of O (to restart) I get the "System failed VGA test" on boot (but it doesn't freeze when shutting down). Hibernation is easy enough to fix by just turning it off (it's not a laptop so I don't need it anyway), but it still happens sometimes when I log out. So as long as I never change users the system works perfectly and this never happens. I've tried GNOME, Xfce4, OpenBox without any DE, gdm3 and SLiM and the problem persists in all of them.
Some system details:
Debian Squeeze i386 (using only software from the stable main repository)
Kernel: 2.6.32-5-686
Video card: ATI Radeon 9600SE (using the preinstalled open source drivers)
Motherboard: ASUS P4P 800-E
By the way: sometimes when it's in the process of shutting off (when the display hasn't been corrupted), after it kills all graphical applications, I can see that the CLI text gets the garbled look, but at that point the poweroff works without freezing. This is the most similar sounding bug that I could find: [URL]. Unfortunately I can't find a solution to it, and most people who have similar problems seem to get either the garbled graphics or the freezes, but not both. Also: how safe is it to keep shutting off with SysRq to recover from this? Can I get disk errors?

I have Lucid setup for multi user. Whenever 2 users are logged in and one logs off, it freezes on a black screen. It looks like it logs off OK and is on its way to the main login screen but never gets there. I found some older posts describing this problem but no solution. I tried to post to that thread but got a message saying I was not permitted. I am new to Linux and am struggling to figure out how to problem solve issues in Ubuntu.

I'm running 10/11 on a toshiba satellite. i kinda got tired of loosing stuff because i mis-timed the battery discharge, so some months ago i pulled the battery and just ran on the adapter (back ground, i don't know if it's nothing, related to, or caused the problem).
monday morning fired her up - boom got the power "gnome manager not installed correctly"message. tuesday, googled gnome then power then... you get the route, and found Fedoraforum.org, read the stuff, did the yum remove...., did the yum install.... everthing seemed cool. 2nd reboot she stopped at the "f/infinity/balloon" kinda logo.
i went to verbose startup and - all sorts of services were failing; the word deprecate(d, ing, tion) came up a lot "device full..." came up a fair bit as well. when i tried the "yum remove" approach again i got [rpmdb: write: 0x1fd48b0, 8192: No space left on device]. similarily on "yum install" same kinda stuff - deprecation, BaseExpection, deprecated..... kinda long winded. up till now (13 years)

Firefox 4 becomes completely unresponsive for about 5 seconds. It seems to be happening mostly but not exclusively when switching tabs. At first I thought the problem was flash related but I was wrong, it happens regardless of the pages contents. Also, the problem seems to be more frequent as more tabs are open. It's interesting that it happens only on my computer at work (Intel Q33) but not at home (NVidia GTX 570). Both computers run Fedora 15 with Gnome 3 (HW accelerated). I also tried starting in fallback mode but the problem remained.

Just installed Fedora 12 stable release without checking office/productivity, server, or developer "package options". Running Gnome.Used yum to get Amarok on here, and it freezes almost immediately every time I try to open it. The splash shows, a program shows up on the window-manager panel labeled "KDED Glob..." and the system freezes. Mouse, keyboard, all unresponsive. I had FC12 Beta on this exact system and Amarok worked fine. Noting that KDED Glob is probably part of KDE, and that I did not install KDE, I thought maybe Amarok depends on a KDE component that the repo did not pick up as a dependency. Tried to install as much of the mainstream KDE components as I could, with no change.

I had a computer running a NVIDA Quadro NVS 450 with 4 screens on Fedora 14 and it worked fine. I make a new install with Fedora 15 and I am now not able any more running more as one screen with Fedora 15. I am running now on run level 3 and when I configure the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf for one screen, Gnome starts correctly. When I change to two screens, and runs "startx", Gnome 3 starts and displays only the background picture without any manager. The file /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows no errors.

Can I statically set remote desktop (vino I think) settings so they don't change?2. Are there any gnome applet settings I can change to keep this from happening?

I'm new to the Linux scene. My school computer has linux and it works great, and I'm trying to get into programming, so I figured it'd be good to switch over to Linux (plus I just got a new computer, so it's a good time).
But, I don't know much about how to install it. I've burned a live cd from sourceforge (actually 2: the newest version and one older). I shut off the computer and put the cd in the drive, and then when I turn my computer back on I get the expected menu. I choose my language, and then it brings me to a screen with a few options: "Try Ubuntu without any changes to your computer", "Install Ubuntu", "Check disc for defects", "Test Memory", and "Boot from first hard disk" (plus some options at the bottom of the screen). I've tried every option on the menu, with both cds, but whenever I select anything, it freezes up right away. I've let it sit for 15-20 minutes, and nothing happens, so I'm pretty sure it's not me being impatient
I've also put the disc in while windows is running. When I double-click on my D-drive (in my computer) I get the error message "No cd detected, cannot run cd menu".
I'd be content running a different version of linux, I'd just like to have linux running (although I want it separate from Windows, I don't want Wubi). I'd like to be able to dual-boot, but I'd be willing to give up Windows entirely too. So, any ideas? Anything I can try? Oh, and I'm pretty inexperienced at this, so ask me if you need more details, and please respond in basic terms

As a normal user I have activated the functions of the Quit applet, i.e. Logout, Shutdown and Restart are active buttons. I am able to restart or shutdown, no problems. But when I use the Logout button I don't get logged out, just returned to the login shell & I am still logged in as my user. I don't have a display manager installed and I do NOT want to use a display manager such as XDM or GDM. How do I get the Logout button to actually logout the user? It appears I am only getting logged out of the x-session, but I want complete logout.

In my custom Ubuntu, I can't use gnome-disk-utility application to format USB drive ("Permission denied" error). I have to run gnome-disk-utility with "sudo" to do that.
I guess that I am not in a group which has permission to working with devices, but I can't find out what group is.
Another problem is I can't use "Users and groups" application (users-admin) to manage users and groups, I click buttons but nothing happens I guess that I don't have some kind of permissions too.
How could I fix these 2 problems?

I can, on rare occasions, login to my gnome desktop with the sound theme enabled, but it usually crashes back to gdm while I'm still looking at the ubuntu logo. It does a resolution change, and I thought that might be my problem.
Then, my son noticed that, on those rare occasions we get into the desktop, the gnome-session crashes whenever a system sound plays.
I disabled the Ubuntu sound theme in failsafe mode, then could login to the normal gnome session.
This isn't the only machine that does this, and the other has the same model of motherboard, the ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA. code...

after I installed gnome-do and set it to start at start-up, my computer has started freezing right after gnome-do initiates.what happens is I turn on my laptop and log in, and then when the desktop initiates, gnome-do starts and then immediately the prompt window for the login keyring pops up and then my dekstop environment freezes. I can move my cursor around, but when I click nothing happens and the keyboard is unresponsive. the only option is to hard reboot, but the same thing happens all over again. the curious thing though, is that the notification for connecting to a network is perfectly functional and the system monitor continues to record.
