I've both tried installing GNOME 3 on Ubuntu 11.04 (via ppa) and Fedora Core 15, but I can't use GNOME shell up to 10 minutes continuously. It freezes every time. Sometimes I see "Panic occurred". My chipset is Intel 915.
i had tried to install ubuntu karmic koala and recently unbuntu TLS 10.04 along with windows 7 but every time i login the screen freezes. i dont know the details, my PC consists of a 160gb HDD, 1gb RAM with pentium dual core processor. i even tried knoppix live cd version. is this because ubuntu is installed along with windows?

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell GX240. I have severe difficulty logging in. If I try to login on GNOME or GNOME fail safe mode , I just cant get in . I keep getting the login screen again. I am able to go into terminal mode. Sometimes I have to try upto 100 times to login in GNOME or failsafe mode. Once I am in everything is fine. Is there a way to do some troublshooting? Also transfer to USB sticks is very slow - sometimes as slow as 1MB per min. Is this normal with Ubuntu?
I'm seeing really bad user login format under a standard installation and am wondering why ubuntu does this as default. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.
Today I turned on my netbook as usual, and was greeted by a black screen, no sounds, no colors, just black. Tried rebooting into another kernel and also to recovery mode, to no avail. It's always the same black screen.
It reboots with Alt-sysrq-b, and ctr-alt-del; but that's all it does. Didn't respond to any other command that I tried.
I also went into GRUB menu and erased the 'splash' thing from the text, and also tried going to rescue mode, the first one was exactly the same as before; the latter said that the command didn't exist.
For the record my netbook is an Acer AspireOne 751h, and I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.
After logging into my ubuntu (lucid), the system freezes. The whole screen is white colored or sometimes it loads the background image, but it doesn't show any items on the desktop and any panel. It also doesn't react on commands like [Alt]+[F2].
when I get into the login page, I can only see the background and the login box in the middle of the page just turns whole white and keeps flashing. no response for any clicks. I was force to ctrl+alt+F1 to switch to init 1 to do my work. But I still want to use my graphical desktop either KDE or Gnome is ok. I am using gnome.
I decided to install ubuntu again and downloaded 10.04. I had some issues installing with the desktop version, but everything installed fine with the alternate version. Now if I want to log in (on the KDE login-screen) the KDE-loading-symbols show up just as they are supposed to do, the desktop shows up (I can see "Desktop Folder and uBlog) and suddenly the mouse/system freezes. Neither Ctrl-Alt-Del isn't working nor Ctrl-Alt-F2 gives any response, all I can do is to reset my computer.
When I use Gnome as a desktop enviroment the computer totally freezes at the login-screen, without giving me any chance of logging in. Things I already tried: noapic, nomodeset, noacpi settings when booting, I successfully installed the latest ATI-Driver for my 3870, I disabled compiz. The kdm log says that there's some problem with an i-bus-daemon. Disabling/restarting the daemon has no effect on the behavior of my installation.
I have the problem using ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 they both freezes after some time say like 2 or 3 min after login ..even the live cd freezes too but sometimes it works (its strange ) and when i select the advance option form live cd = acpioff, it works fine form the live cd. however my 9.04 ubuntu ultimate edition works fine. but i want to run 9.10 or 10.04. how to turn off the acpi form command like in regular installation i have xp installed side by side.
I've had Ubuntu for months but now it freezes at the login screen. I've written what I did when I last used Ubuntu in a post below. (like undo the xorg upgrades?)
I'm trying to use Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop computer after not having it for a few years (I've actually been waiting for new releases to fix this since it started around 9.04, with no such luck). However, it freezes within minutes after logging in just after a fresh install (triggered by trying to do pretty much anything beyond just moving the mouse, opening menus, etc., although I was able to apt-get install a few packages through terminal with no problems and run update manager) with no explanation. I was able to install Ubuntu through the Alternate installer, however. Normally, I would just search the internet (including this forum) (I've solved several problems that way), but this problem wass too broad for me to find anything useful and specific.
Actions before freezes include browsing the web with Firefox, trying to mount NTFS drives in Computer, and particularly predicatably when opening any non-terminal package manager program. Freezes occur reliably whether in full-featured mode or in Safe Mode.
Initially, I thought the problem was related to my USB Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000, but replacing it with a standard non-USB mouse fixed nothing. The Microsoft Mouse does however freeze up by itself on separate occasions, leaving the system operable with the keyboard (independent of whatever the other problem is).
I'm only able to post this from Windows XP. Text Dumps (links): Hardware Info Summary generated by Speccy dmesg dump after freeze and hard shutdown collected from WinXP) Xorg.0.log after freeze
All open-source fanatics out there like me hate industry and large companies for being on such a high horse all the time. Well, some of us have stooped to their level (towards ubuntu noobs).
after I installed gnome-do and set it to start at start-up, my computer has started freezing right after gnome-do initiates.what happens is I turn on my laptop and log in, and then when the desktop initiates, gnome-do starts and then immediately the prompt window for the login keyring pops up and then my dekstop environment freezes. I can move my cursor around, but when I click nothing happens and the keyboard is unresponsive. the only option is to hard reboot, but the same thing happens all over again. the curious thing though, is that the notification for connecting to a network is perfectly functional and the system monitor continues to record.
When my wife tries to login to her computer, Gnome usually freezes. Nothing in Gnome responds to the mouse or keyboard and all I can do is go to a console and restart gdm. I can always log into Gnome under my username. I am not sure how to troubleshoot this problem. Presumably it is something in the startup apps or a config file. The quick and dirty method would be to create another user and move her data but this would be a lot of work and the problem might come back.
I have a suspicion that it is related to gnome-keyring. This is because (against my advice) she insisted on an automatic login without entering a password. This was a waste of time as gnome-keyring promptly complained and demanded a password. Many times I changed her settings to ask for a login password but it does not always change the behaviour. When it tries to log in automatically without a password Gnome locks up around the time that gnome-keyring asks for its password. The default language for her is Portuguese and mine is English if that makes any difference.
I just updated my netbook remix 9.10 to 10.04 and every time I boot up it freezes as soon as the login screen pops up. Before this said screen pops up I have the ability to move the cursor around freely, and if I mash the life out of enter I can get it to select my username, but freezes before the password entry bar has the chance to come up under it.
i had previously installed Ubuntu 9.10 (dual booting with Windows XP) whichgave me errors of "Hard Disk Bad Sectors" and then would freeze my PC leaving me with no other option than Re-Booting..[ignoring the error as a BUG) so on advice of other ubuntu users.i tried Ubuntu10.04.
On installing Ubuntu 10.04 it showing the same problem as that before.(freezing few minutes after the login page) and again dual booted with Windows XP.
i don't suspect a hard ware problem because my Windows XP works perfectly fine with the Same hard ware.
Hard ware specifications 1 GB RAM 160 GB hard disk 3 Ghz Processor
PS:its the 8th time i have installed Ubuntu ..so its really frustrating .
I have synaptics touchpad on my Acer One netbook. When stuff is loading after login (panels, nautilus, etc.) i can move cursor and it's ok, but after a few seconds (when environment is loaded, i guess) touchpad freezes, and i have to press hardware "enable/disable touchpad" key twice to get it working. How to fix it?
i start up the computer, it loads, it arrives to a screen that says the laptops name, and a bar at the bottum. I can interact with this bar, it is blank and has a picture of a little man with a circle. Clicking on this does nothing, another says shutdown and reset, again clicking on it does nothing. I think the error occured when the computer got unplugged while updating.now before we get into all this GRUB and fancy stuff. I am completely new to linux. I installed this using a cd made from an iso image downloaded from the site. I did not use a windows loader. I don't even have windows anymore. I have all my personal information and data on here and would like it to be restored.I googled it and it says to go to recovery mode using GRUB, don't know how and don't know what grub is.:confus ed:
I just upgraded to 11.04. When I rebooted, everything looked normal. When it asked for my login credentials, it froze. I've tried recovery mode during grub selection, but no luck. I want to try 11.04!
So I finally managed to install a copy of Natty on my old laptop, but when I logged in, the desktop was frozen. I could move my mouse, but I couldn't click anything. I didn't know if it had to do with packages not being up to date or something (though I doubt it is) so I ran sudo apt-get update, and then tried to run sudo apt-get upgrade, but I got an error saying "E: Unable to locate package upgrade". Apparently I'm not the first to have this problem. I found a similar question asked at [URL]... login. However, there was no answer. I thought that maybe an Ubuntu-specific forum would have an answer.
I recently learned that you can upgrade your version without downloading and burning a cd. So I upgraded from 10.04 to 11.04 and now can not use my computer. It will boot up display the log in screen and I can log in. But when it loads up as soon as I try and do anything the computer will completely freeze. I am not really sure what is going on. I do have a somewhat older machine but I have above the minimum requirements to run 11.04 so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Also I can easily boot into the 10.04 cd so I would like to know the path to back up all my documents and photos just in case I need to reinstall the older os.
My gnome-panel freezes frequently. Temporary solution: I have added gnome-terminal to my startup programs, and enter "killall gnome-panel" command whenever the panel freezes. However, this is inconvenient especially when the panel freezes every now and then.
Quite interestingly, all icons, menus, and applets freeze including run dialog [Alt-F2], except logout, battery, volume, etc. in the system (applets indicator) tray [time & calendar icon also freezes in system-tray]. I have tried killing all processes related to evolution, but to no avail. someone also suggested removing applets... well, it is not mentioned which applet to remove..
At random times (approx. once a day), my whole ubuntu/gnome interface freezes. mouseover-animiations (for example on the icons in the taskbar) keep working, but clicking doesn't do anything anymore. On the keyboard, tab and arrows keeps working, but most other keys don't do anything. The only option seems to be to reboot. After that reboot everything is fine again (for a while)
Once the freeze happens, it freezes both the standard ubuntu panels but also the program I have open at that moment. It doesn't seem to be connected to a specific program I run.
Is there some log, or anything else that I can use to figure out where these freezes are coming from?
Problem: Ubuntu freezes up 30 seconds or so after a successful login.
Background:I am running a Compaq Presario SR5030NX. It has had issues for a while with running Ubuntu properly. My computer suffers from this bug. I have managed to get the LiveCD running by adding the following to my boot parameters:
Code: vga=792 i915.modeset=0 When I was running the LiveCD I found that it would freeze after about 30 seconds. I solved this problem by again changing the boot options. This time I:Press F6 Check noapic, nolapic, and pci=noacpi
I then proceeded to install Ubuntu.
My problem arose when Ubuntu did not modify grub.cfg to match the setting I needed in order to boot. I managed to modify in some of the settings correctly, I believe at least, but not all of them.
In its current state Ubuntu is able to boot, but freezes 30 seconds or so after a successful login. If I do not graphically login, I do still have access to VTY1-6. The machine does not freeze until a successful graphical login has been made.
Below is the relevant section of my grub.cfg:
Code: menuentry "Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic" { recordfail=1 if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then save_env recordfail; fi set quiet=1 insmod ext2 set root=(hd0,2) code....
On another note: The liveCD I have been running for 6 months is BackTrack 3 Final. Which does not have this issue at all. I would wager a guess that BackTrack 4 does though as it is based off Ubuntu instead of Slax.
As the title suggests, I am running Ubuntu inside a VMWare environment. I did the upgrade to narwhal and I see the boot-up screen just fine but when I get to the screen to log in to my Ubuntu account this is where Ubuntu freezes up completely and I get nothing out of it at all. I do have VMWare upgraded to the latest version that is available as well.
I am on Ubuntu 10.04, and I think I have had this problem since I installed it. When I type my password into gnome-screensaver and click "Unlock," all the buttons become disabled and the cursor turns into the "busy" look. I have to go into one of the virtual terminals and do "killall gnome-screensaver." This happens maybe 75% of the time when the screen locks.
Also, this last week or two there is a new problem where the gnome-screensaver covers only part of the screen and I can still see and use most of the desktop.
Gnome (or XORG, I'm not sure which name to give it) freezes up not always, but about once every 24 hours after I close the laptop's cover/lid. I know this happens when I close the lid rather than open it judging by the time the clock is locked at. The cursor will move around on the screen, but noting will react to it in any way. Other services such as FTP and Samba still work just fine when the computer is "locked down". Without more details to why the problem is occurring, I have no idea what to search for or where to get started solving the problem. I have attached the XORG logs (found in var/log) in case they are of any use.
