Ubuntu Multimedia :: 82845G Video - Totem Received X Windows System Error
May 13, 2010
My parents have a 8 yr old computer, and they have been running linux for the last 2 years- our graphics card has been a nightmare. It has not worked right....since we first installed 7.10. In 9.04 it could still halfway play DVD's & videos (just barely). No longer in 10.04- Mplayer, totem, xine & VLC die when you try to play a video- any video.
And here's what I get(in terminal):
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. (Details: serial 89 error_code 11 request_code 132 minor_code 19). (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

this happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.

i have movie player (totem) and as an alternate vlc. both will play store bought encrypted dvds very well etc. however, movie player when on "videos" for instance will frequently flag the search operation with one/ two of the following:
"error looking up uri/ cannot resolve host name" or
"error looking up video uri"
automount failed: mount point for
org.gtk.vfs; mountpoint.http already running" or
"an error occurred location not found"
it is difficult to clear and unstick these red flags. audio from rhythmbox music player is awesome. what dependent file or plug-in am i lacking or need to delete?

Whenever I'm playing a video in Totem, if I use the navigation bar thing to go to a different time in the video, the video output freezes. Audio continues, but video stops. If I pause the video first, then use the navigation thing, then click play again, it works fine. Same happens for music; the visualizer freezes if I drag the navigation thing.
Edit: If I put it on repeat, when the video or music repeats the video output freezes also.

I'm trying to play a video across the network (watch the "Live View" of a Network Camera) using my Linux/Ubuntu 10.10 Laptop. The video plays fine from Windows and Mac using any browser with Quicktime plugin. My Linux/Ubuntu seems to have a Quicktime plugin called Totem, which shows up in Plug-ins tab as QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6 Totem 2.32.0 (using GStreamer 0.10.30) When Firefox tries to open the videostream using Totem, no video is played just there's an unfunctioning play button and a blank video screen. My own suggestion to this problem is to use another side application such as VLC player inside Firefox. But it seems VLC is unusable in this case because the network video's requires HTTP authentication and I cannot enter that authentication info from VLC itself.

My partner is a teacher and has downloaded some videos from a teacher's resource site but can't seem to play them in Ubuntu. They play fine in Windows XP using Windows Media Player but they only play a few seconds in VLC or Totem and then freeze. The files in question seem to be normal MPG (MPEG-1) video files but somehow VLC and Totem choke on them. I have installed all restricted video formats including w32codecs but still no joy. My partner is threatening to go back to Windows!

On 10.04 64-bit, I've been noticing this weird error where totem comes to a halt after ~3/4 of playback in a 30-45 minute video, then it starts to play back again after about 10 seconds but it's a bit choppier. What could be causing this or how I can track down the issue? I'm running a nVidia GTX 275 with nividia-current drivers (195.36.24) if that helps diagnose anything.

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 x64, and the colors in my videos are distorted. Blue seems to be the primary tint over everything. This problem occurs regardless of video format (avi, mkv, flv, etc) and regardless of video player I use (banshee, totem, vlc, etc). However, no other colors in my operating system are distorted; it's only for these movies. I also have an NVidia video card, which I installed the latest driver for through the restricted drivers pop up.

I installed 10.04 in a Dell Dimension 3000 for my father. It's a nice upgrade from the old Pentium 3, except for graphics it seems. I tried playing a video I recorded on my phone. Movie player(totem) appears to play the video, but instead shows a blank screen. Moving the window, minimizing, ect. shows a frame or two, but that's it. Converting to OGG, and turning off compix does nothing. I installed VLC and now the video plays but in slow motion. Sound works great in both. I'm not sure if it's an Intel graphics thing or what, but it's pretty bad when ..... plays better then local video.
BTW not sure if it's related but it also seems to have a problem coming out of suspend.

Debian Lenny Gnome
Intel Celeron, 1100MHz, 512k
Earlier today I downloaded a video of a Mozilla Project preview, in MP4. Of course, it won't play. All I get is the audio, and this error:
Quote:
"An error occurred. The playback of this movie requires a H.264 decoder plugin which is not installed."
I put in some time, researching this issue, trying to figure it all out. I guess I'm looking in the wrong places. Is this a proprietary format issue? Also, when I was overdosing on XP, my media drug of choice was Klite mega codec pack (from codecs.com). It literally plays every media format, audio and video. In addition to fixing the above issue, can somebody guide me to an equivalent player with codecs for [insert any media type here]? I have several Terrabytes of various video and audio files, and prefer to not convert them all.

It seems to be able to play flash videos acquired from from video.google.com (ive only tried one) but NONE from ...... On other distros it will play ALL flash video from ANY source from the tmp directory perfectly fine.
Heres the original error
Search for suitable codec?
The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to install suitable codecs to play media files. Do you want to search for a codec that supports the selected file?
The search will also include software which is not officially supported.

Sometimes for web TV one is offered a menu where the video is divided into sub chapters where you can jump right to this part of the video by clicking in a chapter menu (very similar to playing a DVD). Well, this does not work for me. Clicking a sub chapter only set the video to play from start, and sliding the bar only freezes the player with a white screen. I'm running 10.04 (64b), Firefox 3.6.9, with the latest Totem-plugin.

I'm having trouble playing back videos from a DLNA device in Ubuntu 11.04, and I'm not sure where the problem lies.
Using the software manager I've installed the extra plugins package for Totem, and enabled the Coherence DLNA/UPNP plugin. I can see the device (Humax Freeview HD recorder) in the MediaServers list, and can browse through the programmes I've recorded on it. However, trying to play any of the has no effect, the main part of the window still shows the "clapperboard" graphic.
I noticed that the "recent files" filenames that were appearing on the Movie menu didn't match the ones that were listed in the sidebar - they're of the form e.g. 313.TS rather than the original descriptive name with a .ts extension. Running Totem from a shell prompt, I can see the following console output: request to play: Man on Earth_20110622_0508.ts 013311314 http://192.168.254.1:9000/web/media/313.TS I tried entering that URL into Firefox, and it started downloading okay; according to the LiveHTTPHeaders addon the response headers are
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
Server: HUMAX / MicroMediaServer
Accept-Range: bytes
Content-Type: video/ts
Content-Length: 1799258112
Pragma: no-cache
Cache-Control: no-cache
Why can't Totem play the file? Some other codec needed for video/ts files that I've not got installed? (it hasn't prompted me to install any extra packages) Does it just not like the fact the file extension is upper case? Or something else entirely?
On a separate machine, also running Ubuntu 11.04, I installed the VideoLan client; VLC can browse to the files and play them without any problem. So why can't Totem?

i want to resolve the above error. I'm using systemimager to autoinstall system images on pc's connected in lan. while doing this i got the error No DHCPOFFERS received. Also at the time of booting my pc it shows the message No dhcp and/or proxyDHCP offers recieved. But i've started the dhcpd deamon on my pc. Also the systemimager rsync deamon is running. The two pc's are also connected in lan properly.
Still while autoinstalling the image on client it fails showing the error message... No DHCPOFFERS recieved. what do i do in order to make my autoinstall work properly? How do i come to know whether the dhcp server is running or not? What will be the exact problem in autoinstalling?

I've freshly installed Debian Lenny 5.03 with xfce from cd, but I'm having intermittent problems with X. Mostly X will startup fine, but occasionally it crashes. If I'm lucky, it will just shutdown and just return me to the text-mode login. But if I'm unlucky, it freezes completely, such that even the alt-SysRq key combos won't work.
The PC I'm using is a Dell Celeron 1.8Ghz, with
:# lspci | grep -i vga
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL
[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)
where I'm using a default xorg.conf file of... [URL]
and the respective Xorg.0.log files are
a) for when xorg runs okay... http://pastebin.com/h0rbti1U
b) for when xorg crashes to textmode... http://pastebin.com/f7B6SgKf
c) for when xorg freezes up completely... http://pastebin.com/gydNkJFf

I've seen a bit about the display being frozen on intel integrated displays, but I do not see the answer anywhere. Does anyone know how to fix this problem: Ubuntu 9.10 boots and runs just fine for 10, 20 or even 30 minutes performing variety of tasks. Then, without warning the display is frozen. The mouse can move the pointer just fine, but I cannot interact with the desktop and the machine must be shutdown by holding the power button.
I've observed this while playing a Kpatience game, general surfing of the internet, and view ..... videos. One time it happened when the display powers off after being idle, but this is not consistently the case. I have tried to make the freeze happen, but am unable to do so (so it seems, anyway). What is happening here? Here are the details of my system:
Dell Dimension 2400 Desktop
Output from lshw:
*-display
description: VGA compatible controller
product: 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device

how I fixed my sound problems, that happened only for "windows media 9" videos, after struggling for days changing the players etc. (using Ubuntu lucid 10.04 up to date)First search for "Ubuntu install w32codecs" (or w64codecs depending on your system bus width) and... install them as root or 'sudo'
Code:
$ sudo apt-get install w32codecs (or w64codecs)
After updating totem to the very latest version (May 12, 3 days ago) the problem happened to be likely from the source: gstreamer. So I tried to install the latest version of gstreamer, and it worked (the default one packaged in Ubuntu is dated 2008...).
Code:
try
{
install latest developer version
}

I have fresh install (not upgrade) of Ubuntu 10.04. I have nVidia 8500GT VGA, drivers installed via System->Administration->Hardware drivers (ver. 195.36.15)Everything works fine, compiz too.But when I play the video in Totem movie player - in blinks ugly while changing volume directly via buttons on keyboard. It blinks in fullscreen and even in window. I did not have this in Ubuntu 9.10 - there it worked fine. What was changed? How to fix this? Interesting is that when I play it via mplayer - it is fine.

I want to watch a certain video on [url]...., but I get an error message instead. Some videos can be played, so I'm thinking it's a form of restriction, but I can't be sure.I tried using a few proxies, but on some the error message persists and on others the video doesn't load. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and Firefox 3.5.8.

Thought I would post this up here, because I've been searching for a solution, and not found one online:Problem description When playing both .mp4 and .rm files, the sound played fine, but the display remained black.
Solution Open the Configuration Editor (run gconf-editor in the terminal). Navigate to system > gstreamer > 0.10 > default, double-click on videosink and change the setting from autovideosink to ximagesink

Totem will start to play them but claim i need gstreamer bad plugins... it will offer to install them and afterward will say "data stream error" when i try to play any. Is there a codec package that would allow me to play flash... i already tried the w64codecs package the gstreamer good bad and ugly from synaptic, and installed totem-xine to no avail.

when i try to play a flash video the visual works but not the audio and totem tells me i need the suitable codec which it says is gstreamer-bad and when i attempt to install it, it says that it conflicts with gstreamer-really-bad but if i remove gstreamer-really-bad and install gstreamer-bad totem gives me an internal data stream error instead and even visual won't work. so i ran totem--debug and this is the terminal output with gstreamer-bad when trying to play flash video.
quote:
** message: error: internal data stream error. gstflvdemux.c(528): gst_flv_demux_loop (): /play/decodebin0/flvdemux0: stream stopped, reason error
i also ran totem --debug with gstreamer-really-bad installed and this is the output then.
quote:
totem --debug
** (totem:7979): debug: init of python module
** (totem:7979): debug: registering python plugin instance: videos+totempythonplugin
** (totem:7979): debug: creating object of type videos+totempythonplugin
