Fedora Servers :: Webalizer Not Analyzing Correctly?
Feb 8, 2009I have a dedicated server with fc-9. I have several domains. They are located in /home/domainname/html Under each /home/domainname I have added a webalizer.conf file. Recently I moved video files into a subdomain so I could track usage and generate reports on the use of these video files. Hence the main domain html files call the sub-domain to present flash files for viewing and .avi, .ogm, mp4, etc files for downloading.
So I have for directories:
/home/domain/html
/home/domain_files/html
I set up the domain_files as I have the main domain with access_log and error_log. I set up webalizer to analyze every day at midnight. What I get for webalizer results is links back to Sept, even though the logfile's first enter is in January. I also see many files in the report that are from a totally different domain. I have checked carefully and in webalizer.conf I have: LogFile /home/domain_files/access_log I'm lost. I haven't a clue what's wrong. If webalizer can't do this is there another simple logfile analyzer that can give me video usage?
Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Filesystem Type Impacts Performance?
Jun 4, 2010I installed a month or so ago a Samba File Server along with Active Directory integration in my company. I choose to install on my newly created raid array, all in ext3 filesystem. The purpose of this fileserver is to have lots of files from the different departments on the company (all windows workstations except mine). Everyone has a private folder and a department folder, along with the common folder for all employees.did I made a mistake formating all to ext3? would I get a significant increase in performance if I resize the current ubuntu partiton and created a new NTFS new one and move the files to it?

May 18, 2011I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:
*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..
*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?

Sep 14, 2011I'm hoping to find an existing Linux tool for measuring latency:
I'm trying to diagnose how much latency my OS and NIC card are adding to TCP latency in Linux. I looked at the following tools but all (at least at the surface level) measured bandwidth (Mbps/sec) rather than latency (nanoseconds for transmition of 1 packet of size x).
If I were to write a custom test, it would likely do the following:
Client:
Create a fake message of the specified length with some padding for an incrementing identifier. Open a TCP connection (with the right parameters like TCP_NODELAY, etc) Loop and send messages containing an incrementing identifier. Store the current system time (in nanos) associated with the identifier. Listen for responses, record the current time and record the latency of that identifier asynchronously Server Listen for a connection Echo back any message received
Assuming both boxes had the same setup (configs, cards, OS, CPU, etc), are relatively close to eachother in the network, and one knows roughly the network's latency contribution, one could get a rough estimate of the OS + NIC contribution and begin testing various configurations.
One could also get a more accurate picture of the latency by using a network sniffer and snooping on the lines between the two hosts, calculating the latency between the two sides for an ID, and then subtracting that from the internally measured latency.

Jul 31, 2010I just wanted to know if having my laptop set to ondemand, will this affect performance in any way? I realize it increases the clock speed to performance when the CPU is under load, but does the time it take to go from ondemand to performance affect speed? Will there be any noticeable difference between the two setups? I have a dual core intel at 2.2GHz when in performance. When ondemand is set with no load it downclocks to 800Mhz.

I have a Fedora 10 running. So I want to start with this. I have read that there is a "special" way to create a kernel for Fedora. [URL] OK. I understand this +/-. When you build a new kernel with an other version number, you have to rebuild all the modules with this new kernelversion, and you have to install these also.
But : I want to start with modify only some parameters in my kernel config. Do I need to rebuild and re-install the modules also? Will it not be enough to rebuild only the kernel? (vmlinuz) Where can I find some information about the options I can disable in my kernel to speedup my system? (boot process ed). I want to suppress the loading of unneeded modules. Fedora Hardware :: Sound Parameters Not Staying Set On Restart In F12
Nov 21, 2009I install fedora 12, but a problem shows up. The sound is too low, so I go to the terminal and run alsamixer. Pulse audio is for default, so I check Mi card Hd Nvidia and make the sound louder, but wend I shut down the PC and star up again, the settings are Low again. So I don't know how the set up the system to save the parameters.

Sep 2, 2009After being forced to rebuild my computer (failed drive) I finally got current and installed F11 (was using F9). I was watching GKrellm last night and noticed something odd. The CPU frequency on my processor (Phenom 9600) was scaled to the slower speed and was rarely being pushed to full speed.
I verified that cpuspeed was in ondemand mode and ran some processor intense tasks (huge image loads, large file cats, large yum installs, etc...). Only when I was able to sustain near 100% load would the system throttle to the full clock speed. It would then drop back to the slower speed very quickly even though the process was still running. As a rough benchmark, I ran these tasks again in performance mode to see what impact this was having. Most of these tasks were taking as much as 40-50% longer to complete in ondemand mode.
Digging further, I found that the default up_threshold in F11 is set to 95%!! This is verified by cating /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold. This means that the system would not throttle to full speed unless a 95% load was sustained for multiple samples (36 miliseconds each by default).
I overrode these settings in /etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed. I change up_threshold to 60 and down_threshold to 30. I am at work right now, so I can't benchmark this change until tonight. I guess I could have just set it to performance mode and left it, but I'd rather save the power when the machine is idle.
Does anyone have any thoughts on why 95% is the default and if there is any problem/benefit to changing this to a much lower value? It seems that anyone with a CPU running SpeedStep or CoolnQuiet would suffer the same severe performance impacts I saw with the default values.
Fedora :: Low Battery Performance

I used to get around 2 and half hours on ubuntu natty. could someone help me figure out whats going on?All hardware has been working well and i havent installed any proprietary drivers except the WLAN broadcom driver.

But I get the following:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
I try ext3:
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps -t ext3
dmesg says:
error: can't find ext3 filesystem on dev loop6.
I've also tried ext2, vfat etc. How can I detect the filesystem type of apps.img?

Jul 9, 2010I have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.
First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.
Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.
Fedora :: F11 Low Performance Intel X3100?
Nov 21, 2009I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with a X3100 on board. The problem is the performance doesn't really fit my expectations. Compiz works fairly OK, but TuxRacer runs at 25 FPS, Glest runs just terribly slow and there is quite noticeable tearing in videos (MPlayer and Totem). Not to mention 400-600 FPS in glxgears.So far I have only tampered with Xorg (see below, changes marked red).

Fedora :: AMD Ontario And Graphics Performance
May 8, 2011Recently I noticed there are on sale, from several manufacturers, some interesting and inexpensive laptops equipped with AMD's new Ontario C50 processor which for one thing seems to use little power (like the Atom), and the other and more interesting is the fact that it has the graphics embedded.
I am curious if someone here owns one of said laptops and can comment about the performance/compatibility of this Ontario chip, because some of these laptops are such good deals that I am seriously considering at least recommending them. Obviously if I purchase one of those I'd install Fedora on in. Two things puzzle me: is performance very far apart from that of a netbook, and second, how do the graphics perform? Do they use the Catalyst driver as well?

I use tmout = 15 min in my /etc/profile (along with readonly tmout). i have some issues i need to address, looking for ideas.
1. what is considered a idle "session" ?
2. if i & a process to the background and do nothing is this a idle session?
3. if user uses su to a higher level, are there now two sessions? is the tmout for user suspended until su user time outs or leaves su session?
4. i have some users who will run long sql queries. is there a workaround to have the session remain active until process has finished?

Mar 24, 2010I've had a look at some similar threads but as I'm very new to linux they're already a bit technical for me. Sorry, this calls for someone with patience. I gather from other threads that disconnecting an external drive without unmounting is a no-no, and this seems to be the likely cause. Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! Jun 16, 2010I just did (another) fresh install of FC13. On the last install I attempted to install the nvidia proprietary drivers (tried every guide I could find). When I installed the proprietary drivers, I could no longer boot. It would hang at the end tri-color progress bar. I could ALT+F2 to get to tty2, and deleting the xorg.conf file and init 5 would get me back to the Gnome login. I continued trying other methods, getting such results as a black screen with no way to access tty. I tried using the rescue function from the DVD, but this time I couldn't fix the problem by deleting xorg.conf and executing init 5.
After failing in everything I tried for the proprietary driver, I decided I'd give the new nouveau a shot. Every time I fresh install FC13, the graphics performance is TERRIBLE. Moving a window around or scrolling in Firefox is painfully choppy and borders on unusable. I tried 'yum install mesa-dri-drivers-experimental' but after rebooting the performance was still beyond crappy.
I can get proprietary drivers working in Debian Lenny without breaking a sweat, but I prefer Fedora as a whole by far.
