Sometimes after I reboot, by desktop background is just a black screen. When I go to the settings folder, it shows the image that it previously was, but i have to change either the "zoom" or "tile" settings, or just change the image in order for it to reappear. I really have no idea why this happens, and certainly does not happen with every reboot. If it helps, I am using Intel Ironlake Mobile.

First download and install mtpfs......Then do this

This works just fine for Fedora 14 but on Fedora 15 the mount point disappears on reboot ie there is no /media/a500 folder. a500 appears under devices in Nautilus and mtpfs is ok as I can mount the device via the command line by creating the mount point setting ownership and running

Last Saturday, I made a fresh install of 64 bit Fedora 12. Here's my problem:
I can set the desktop background; however, when I switch from one workspace to another, the background disappears from all workspaces! I have six workspaces, and clicking on anyone of them makes the background disappear.
I want to change installation background image in fedora 12.
How to change the installation background not desktop background.
Inserting any CD crashes Nautilus and all desktop Icons disappears. Eject the CD. Icons comes back and everything is fine.

After this nothing! YUM does not work, neither does Firefox! A bug report informed me there was a Python problem but I can find no reference to this anywhere.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have reinstalled 10.04 several times and have the same result. After the install everything works and looks great. Then after the first power down and reboot the top menu bar and bottom panel are gone.
The desktop wallpaper (bare of anything) is there, still responds to right-clicks, etc, and the system seems to function, but the menu bar is missing. The extents of the desktop are still the same, so it's not the desktop extending outside of the screen display area (mouse doesn't disappear over the edge).
I can alt-F1 to get to the menu bar menu items, and they function - appearing from the top edge of the screen, but cannot activate them via mouse. I have reinstalled several times and this consistently happens every time. I had 8.10 on this box and it didn't do this. I reinstalled 8.10 and it was fine again, and then back to this with reinstalled 10.04. The 8.10 was a virgin install and I reformatted the drive on every install so there's no legacy crap clinging on.
I can use ctrl-alt-del to shut down/restart/etc., and alt-F2 gets me the command line. All seemingly functional.

I've been having issues with my ubuntu server (10.04 LTS) lately. Every once in a while, anywhere from 3 days to a month or more, the server will just disappear from the network. All manner of trying to reach it from the outside fails, even from the LAN. Since it's headless, this is kind of problematic. After a hard power down or reboot, the server will always come back online, but this is very annoying for a remotely administered server.
What should I look for when trying to determine why the server keeps going offline? I can't tell if there are any other issues like a hard lockup or anything, just that it is not on the network anymore when this happens.
I use Fedora 11 with all the updates up till now. I cannot change my desktop background using either System -> Preferences -> Appearance or gnome-control-center. I installed gconf-editor and checked the settings and everything seems normal and background is set to the wallpaper i desired but on the desktop nothing changes.

I am running 1280X1084 75 hertz update rate. The Gnome Image Viewer gives a correct image. The image I am running had to be stretched to fill the screen. I suspect the stretching algorithm is at fault. Is this a bug that need reporting?

After installing gnome-color-chooser for Ubuntu 10.10, I followed all the steps to enable transparent gnome menu. When I logged out and logged back into my user, the gnome panel menu was transparent as It should be however, the desktop background changed color and I cannot change the desktop by right clicking the desktop. If I do right click and try to, the entire desktop and all programs freeze. The mouse works but that is it. Whenever I try to open gnome-color-chooser, I get this error message : ERROR Could not open or create file /home/User/.gtkrc-2.0-gnome-color-chooser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gnome color chooser and gnome panel with no luck.

Any changes that I make to my desktop wallpaper in Gnome don't stay in effect after a reboot. Any ideas as to what is going on here? I don't mind the default blue swirly thing in F13, but I at least want the style change from scale to center to stick.
Choosing the 'set as default' option doesn't seem to help either, as that changes the screen you see at the Gnome login. Once I log into my account the default desktop wallpaper is still there.
I've been a very happy user of Debian Squeeze (gnome) for a few months already.
Everything works great, but I am encountering an annoying, and regular problem: almost every time I update my system (through synaptic) and reboot, my desktop theme gets reset to the more "blocky" default gnome one.
What I do is run "gnome-settings-daemon," either as normal or super user, reboot, and get back my chosen original theme.
I have ubuntu desktop version installed on my PC and it's the only OS on the machine. I has been working fine. Since I recently updated all the software packages everything on my desktop disappears. I can call up the right-click menu, and create files and folders via it. I can turn on and off the computer by pressing the power button. The OS is reacting to my action but the task bar and menu on top and bottom are gone.
Has anybody seen this? Is there anything I can do to roll the system to back to the previous normal state? P.S. I can use command line.

Secondly, it defaults with 4 desktops in a 2X2 grid layout. I changed it to 2, then back to 4 and now it has 4 desktops in a linear layout (1x4). How can I change it back to 2X2?

If you log out and log back in, then the new background is displayed. But surely this is not the way it should work. Shouldn't the background change immediately?

I have a really weird problem ─ I can only set svg graphics as desktop backgrounds. I can't put any kind of png/jpg (haven't tried others) picture as a wallpaper. All I get is a black background. The weather backgrounds etc. work perfectly fine. I can create a svgz file in Inkscape and insert a png image in it but that's kind of a stupid workaround for a problem. Has anyone encountered a problem like this?

I also notice that when I run a program that installs anything that screen dims (gets like this grey opacity I guess) after a period of time.
