Fedora :: F14 + X-Fi Xtreme Gamer = Better Sound Than In Win7?

Apr 19, 2011

It's really incredible! And suprising at least using the standard X-Fi drivers from Fedora and Rhythmbox music player. Even with the most current drivers and X-Fi Crystalizer in Win7, the sound quality of my music collection is much much better in Fedora! High's, mid's and low's are crystal clear without all the added extra's I get from the Win7 drivers. Of course, the eq in Rhythmbox has to be setup a bit differently than the Creative Labs eq.Anyone else experiencing this with their soundcards/F14 ?

Fedora Hardware :: No Sound - SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio

Sep 2, 2010

Trying to make the switch to Fedora. For the most part, everything seems to be working fine so far. When I first logged in, I got a message about a kernel crash (with the red siren) but I was not able to send the error report. I have since updated Fedora with the latest updates and have not seen this again yet.

The problem is that I have no sound. I have unmuted the sound in the sound preferences, and it appears to be correctly detected in the hardware tab as:

[SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio] CA0110-IBG

My motherboard is an MSI P6N Diamond with onboard sound.

When I run the lspci -v command, the following is shown:

When I go to the ALSA website and click Soundcards, I see the following:

X-Fi Xtreme Audio (PCI)
CA0106
[PCI] snd-ca0106; [ ] supported [ ] not supported

I am using Fedora 64-bit Desktop Edition. I am also using headphones, as I do not have speakers to test with.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: PCI Express Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio?

May 6, 2010

I've recently installed Linux Mint 8 64-bit on my computer and getting my sound card to work. I've been searching around the internet for solutions but I know next to nothing about computer audio.

My sound card is a PCI Express Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio. Came with my computer. Told it uses the SB Audigy chipset. Using the onboard audio is not an option. The card shows up in Sound Preferences under the Hardware tab, but I cannot get sound from it. Here's what they told me to do:

Install the karmic alsa backports through the Terminal Install hidden Level 5 updates to update the kernel
Disable every audio device except the SB card (the others are onboard and HDMI) Check volume levels in alsamixer, PulseAudio Device Chooser and Volume Control I also tried to install the OpenAudio driver (not sure, will double check), which crashed Linux every time I try to activate it.

Fedora Hardware :: F13 - SB Xtreme Audio And ATI HD4870 HDMI

Jun 27, 2010

I've followed some instructions that I've found searching this forum and what I've concluded was that my audio plays only from the HDMI port of the VGA... Changing the settings around to use the SoundBlaster card does nothing. I've installed pavucontrol and setting the HDMI port to profile Off does nothing. When enabled the bar under the levels seems to play music. (It shows activity) But when I send the stream to the Sound Blaster the bar stays 100% and doesn't do anything. (no activity and no sound). I can't verify that the HDMI port actually plays out audio. I'm new to Fedora and linux all together. I've tried Fedora in the past F11 I think but that's all.

The "cat /proc/asound/cards" command produces this:
0 [HDMI]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI
HDA ATI HDMI at 0xfbaec000 irq 33
1 [Generic]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
HD-Audio Generic at 0xfbbfc000 irq 16
The "/sbin/lsmod | grep -c snd" command produces this: 12
"Yum update" has been executed several times without the need to update anything.

Debian Hardware :: Use The X-fi Xtreme PCI Express X1 Riser Board?

Feb 27, 2010

I've been through 4 Soundblaster and ESS sound cards now with no luck on the MSI P7N Diamond m/b machine. By design, its supposed to use the x-fi xtreme PCI express x1 riser board, but that doesn't want to work with any linux I have found, even though it does recognize via lspci and is supposed to be supported by the newest ALSA versions, which I tried according to the wiki. The machine won't even boot with the ESS AudioPCI 9752 board in it. It has an ES1370 chip on it.

The older PCI Soundblaster CT4810 with CT5880 chip on it did recognize via lspci but only works for 1 boot cycle with debian 5.04 or knoppix 6.01. It does work well with knoppix 6.2.1, which is where I might land with this machine if I can't get sound working on debian. The PCI Soundblaster Live! does not recognize via lspci. It doesn't even show up after a full from scratch reinstall.

So, will a USB sound card "just work"?
http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-3D-Virtual- ... 563813f87a

Or if not, maybe a cheap no name PCI card from ebay? I would rather not use my only PCI slot which would block install of better video cards, but:[URL].. Those are about the only thing I can think of that I haven't tried.

I have Tried 64bit Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Opensuse/Mepis and 686 version of antiX.I will attach a screenshot of what a screen looks like from the live CD. The card is new and works in win 7 so the card is not faulty, but why can I not use any live CD with it? If I manage to work out the garbled graphics and install a distro its the same. Sometimes if I add "nomodeset" to the boot line I can see the screen perfect. But then trying to install ati drivers boots me to a command line.

Networking :: After Upgrading From Win7-32 To WIN7-64 Can't Mount Cifs Shares

Jul 21, 2010

This is the first time I have run into issues mounting windows shares but I really can't figure this out. Can someone put me out of my windows misery please.

First off, last week I rebuilt my work PC fromWIN7 32bit to WIN7 64bit since then I can no longer mount the window share on my ubuntu server:

I recreated my windows share called "Linux" and used the properties, advanced sharing and added everyone, full access and my domain account full access.

If I browse to \ipaddress I can see my share and access it. From a XP machine I can see the share and access it.

From linux I use the same mount point as before, /linux I use the same fstab and it fails

Code:

I try this manually now:

Code:

Next I try to mount it:

Code:

I looked at my firewall rules and they seem ok.

Next test was connecting to my 2nd pc on windows XP no probs mounted first time.

What is wrong with my new Win 7 setup?

Hardware :: Creative X-FI Xtreme Audio Expresscard Is Supported By ALSA?

Jun 10, 2010

Does anyone know how well (or if) the Creative X-FI xtreme audio Expresscard is supported by ALSA?Unfortunately it isn't even on the list of cards at all on their site. I know that there are two versions of the card, the earlier version was silver and fit a 54mm expresscard slot, and the later version was black and was 34mm. As far as I know they both use the old CA010x chipset (the same as the old Creative Audigy 2 Cardbus card), but I have no idea if that driver in the kernel will even pick it up.This onboard sound on my laptop is just driving me nuts anymore and I need something else.My old Audigy 2 Cardbus card I had for my old laptop was great, but it's just that, a cardbus card.

I have recently installed Fedora 15 KDE (with Dual Boot Win7) on my computer:Dell Optiplex 330, Intel Core2Duo- 2.53 GHz, 32 Bit, 2GB RamnVIDIA 8400 GSWhile going through the Guides mentioned here: for F15, I tried to install nVIDIA Drivers after updating the Kernel.suyum update kernel*rebootHowever it gave me some errors and then I did try the following method (as described in Missingbox studio guide)su -yum install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 bootconf-gui kernel*develfollowed by Reboot.

I start my computer, I get the screen which shows that Fedora will boot in 3 seconds. This is followed by a black screen with a "Blue followed by white" Bar running towards right (where Fedora 15 is written)....It stays there for ever (I waited for 3 hours and then switched off my computer).Presently I am writing this post through Windows7.Is there any way I can repair Fedora through Win7 or by any other means.---------- Post added at 10:57 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:51 AM ----------I remember the instructions (given by leigh123linux) that we should provide the following information

Fedora :: Samba Can't See XP Or Win7 Machines?

Sep 13, 2010

Samba and access to/from my Fedora 11 system and my Win-XP or 7 boxes worked great. Then, I upgraded to F13 and although I can export with Samba, none of my F13 systems can see any Windows boxes.

I checked the services. SMBD and NMBD are running fine.

I checked the firewall and eventually disabled it totally. No effect.

I checked this forum for Samba configuration issues. All seem OK and consistent with other fixes seen here and elsewhere.

I loaded smb4k and it has the same problems - can't see windows machines whatsoever.

But here is what's curious. I also run VirtualBox-OSE and the Windows running in there CAN see my other windows boxes just fine (after I load the Guest Additions anyway). Therefore, there is nothing on my system that is firewalling the ports. The problem must be with Samba/F13 as installed or as updated.

I can't imagine anything about my network that is odd or cumbersome. I use no passwords on the private network anywhere as security is not an issue. I've been around Windows since 3.0 and Unix/Linux since 1994, so I'm no noob. But I clearly have some problem I'm not seeing or there is a serious bug in the Samba libraries somewhere. Or is my expectation of seamless operation like in the earlier days now just a dream?

Red Hat / Fedora :: 14 And Win7 Dual Boot?

Nov 8, 2010

I install Fedora 14 32bits the same way I install Ubuntu. First, make unallocated space for it (about 150Gb). During the installation setup, I select "use all continuous free pace" as partition option, coz it's fastest and easiest. /dev/sda/ is selected as location for boot loader, and leaves Fedora as default boot target. Installation process goes very smoothly, but when the system restarts. The computer boots up as if Fedora has never been installed, it goes straight to Windows7, No GRUB boot loader menu whatsoever.

troubleshooting attempt #1: at first I thought it maybe the GRUB compatibility issue between 32bits Fedora and 64bits Win7. So I tried out 64bits Fedora, doesn't work.troubleshooting attempt #2: then I tried to install the boot loader on the Linux partition (first boot sector of boot partition) and let Windows 7 controls the startup menu by using FreeBCD.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Can't Get The Win7 Boxes To See Shares On It

May 7, 2011

Home network with 3 Win7 boxes and one elderly Fedora 11 box (heloise) which has been running Samba well for several years. I've just built and started configuring a new Fedora 14 box (abelard) to replace heloise, but can't get the Win7 boxes to see shares on it.

Windows Explorer on the Win7 boxes can see abelard, and they can see the two shares I've created on it, but if I double-click on a share I get the "Windows cannot access" dialog.

I've set a Samba password for one user (ralph), the same as that user's login password, and set the "smb password file" entry to point to the resulting .tdb file.

All IP addresses are static (via Static DHCP), everybody can ping everybody, I can ssh from a Win7 box to abelard via Putty, and the network operates cleanly in all other respects. Here's my smb.conf:

Fedora Installation :: F11 In A Virtual PC Environment On Win7

Oct 2, 2009

I'm not exactly a newb (anymore), but I'm trying to get F11 to install in a virtual PC environment on Win7.

I'm installing on a tablet PC, so I want to do the virtual thing first, to see if Linux can handle the touch screen the way I need it to before I put only Linux on here. The problem I'm running into is that the install wants to default to "text mode", which isn't really a problem, but upon the first reboot, the graphics are all messed up, and I can't get the install to continue.

Is there a command line I can modify to use standard VGA settings during the install, but "redetect" the display settings when the install is complete and I'm ready to use F11?
